History called Tom T Hall and Johnny Horton great story tellers, but damn Merle Haggard could sure write and sing a story just as well as anyone I ever heard. I miss merle, does anyone else out there. If this was paper there would be tear stains.
Real country music. No harmonizer no flashy pyrotechnics no rapping or new age beat. This is pure gold the Hag can rest in peace because his songs will live forever.
All those new age "country" fast stars lack one thing that all the great ones had... and it's called passion.. they gave their lives for us to enjoy their art
When i was a kid, i didnt like country music. I heard merle on tv one night and told my dad, i really like that guy. My dad said hey, thats country music you know. I said yeah, country music's not too bad. ❤ THANKS MERLE.
I was just a little boy in WV when I first heard this song. I didn't truly understand. But I did love my Mom. And it touched my heart. And it still does every time I hear all he has to say. I am 67 now. :-)
This song is very personal. It is about a fellow inmate that killed a guard when trying to escape when he was in prison in his younger years. He has said it's very emotional, and he has to concentrate on singing. This is one of the performances I like best.
He saw this happen when he was on Death Row, as solitary confinement, not on a death sentence. He also talked with Caryl Chessman, The Red Light Bandit, who was executed in 1960.
Susanne Stoddard . This song is about a fellow inmate and friend of Merles. He escaped and about a week after his escape he was in a shootout with a California State trooper and he shot and killed one of the troopers. He was put to death one year after Merle was released from prison. The plan was for Merle to escape with him but the guy told Merle he couldn't go with him because he was young and had a future in front of him with his music. Singing and playing guitar 🎸.
Suzanne here, some people loved elvis some others, but Merle was my all time favorite, no one else like him, ever. that voice no one could ever compete with
I've ALWAYS said that! The guitar solo on What Am I Gonna Do With the Rest of My Life was Hag and in my opinion one of the finest guitar solos in country music.
i love watching these types of videos from yesterday...just goes to show if you have great talent then there is no need for all that fancy music enhancing equipment..this man could just pick up a guitar and just start singing and it would be sensational..the folks today trying to sing im sorry but will never achieve this standing.
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days!!
Greetings from Canada! What an exquisite version of this Haggard classic! I must say! haha I think I even caught a tear in my own eye. I want Roy Buchanan to take the Tele offa' Merle's hands and rip out a few licks. LOL Thanks for the upload!
This live version has more heart than the original. Even better. When he drops his voice and sings ‘turn back the years..’ in the last verse it gets me every time. Merle knew the power of that.
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days!!
heard for years and years ago at Merle always predicted that he would die on his birthday and that ended up coming true we know we're not going to live forever but one day if we all believe in Jesus in repent of our sins we'll see each other along with Jesus one day and the music will sing again rip Merle
You just keep on smokin' whatever you've been doin'. Living in your fantasy world is no worse than experiencing the screwed up reality we've got going now on this globe.

Ignoring the certified inspiration of this song, "Sing me back home and turn back the years..." sounds like an allegory for time he lost in penitentiary...and maybe his last will. I can't use the past tense for Merle because he'll always live through his songs. His soul had been bleeding continuously from childhood hidden wounds, for being a branded man from the mind narrowness of many people who didn't understand his genius. Undoubtedly he's a strong man but he's as strong as he's sensitive. He's one of the most complete artists I've ever known is one can pretend they have known Merle....
I don't know if it's the greatest country song ever written, but it's certainly in the top 10. Still missin' ya, Merle.
It would have to be close💔
It's definitely the greatest country song like no other country song.
George has 1-2 in the top 5
@@kimberly1567 Yeah, but Merle's songs were usually very well written and more interesting.
We all know David Allen Coe's is the best, but this is a near second or third
Merle Haggard the best to ever do it. He’s got the voice, wrote the majority of his own hits, superb guitarist, and he has the “presence”.
It's pretty hard to disagree with you.
Cant understand why any one would give a thumbs down if you like true country music absolutely brilliant...
History called Tom T Hall and Johnny Horton great story tellers, but damn Merle Haggard could sure write and sing a story just as well as anyone I ever heard. I miss merle, does anyone else out there. If this was paper there would be tear stains.
That whole show that night was his best live performance ever. In my opinion.
Real country music. No harmonizer no flashy pyrotechnics no rapping or new age beat. This is pure gold the Hag can rest in peace because his songs will live forever.
“Who’s gunna fill there shoes”!!!!!!! Country music is turning sissy this it country
Merle may he rest in peace there will never be another.

I wouldn't throw a cup of piss on that new pop shit if it was on fire.
Whats on the radio today isnt country, same goes for rock and metal. Its all been meshed with pop..its garbage
One of the very best country songs of all time.
I so agree! I love this song, know all the words! A favorite!
When i was a kid, i didnt like country music. I heard merle on tv one night and told my dad, i really like that guy. My dad said hey, thats country music you know. I said yeah, country music's not too bad. ❤ THANKS MERLE.
Rip I was raised on that music
*Merle's still the king* 🔝
A beautiful man that sings from the heart
In his prime, and as good as it gets.
And unlike a lot of good singers that deteriorated in later life Merle stayed good till the end ❤
Still listening here in Ireland 🇮🇪, 2022. A classic.
The Hag, always made it look so easy, this is one of his best, and I know has a lot of meaning, it almost brings you to tears, The original outlaw
I was just a little boy in WV when I first heard this song. I didn't truly understand. But I did love my Mom. And it touched my heart. And it still does every time I hear all he has to say. I am 67 now. :-)
Always amazed at how he does this. The best. RIP Merle.
There's so much truth and feeling in every note that he sings to perfection. I so wish I had seen him live.
He is one of the many country legends that will be greatly missed. RIP :)
There is no such thing as "the best song ever!" However, this is tied for THE BEST!
i don't about you but this song is making me cry. Very beautiful and powerful.
merles voice is clear and crisp god bless the HAG. SO F***** BEAUTIFUL. new singers will never be able to accomplish what the legends have done

My Dad loved Merle, I used to play his albums while we sat on back porch and sang together! Favorite memories of my Dad!

Susanne Stoddard for me it is about singing with my dad and all the memories...growing up hearing this man merle right here!💔

Just listen to the rich variations in his voice in some lines. Sweet.
One of the best
Its touch me when i hear this Merle song, great hit i use to hear repeatly...
Suzanne here, some people loved elvis some others, but Merle was my all time favorite, no one else like him, ever. that voice no one could ever compete with
Merle Haggard and Hank Williams
Haggard never got recognition for his guitar. He could shred with the best of them. Keith Richard's will attest to that. Lodie
and his fiddle playing
yes and his fiddle! one of the reasons i play...
I've ALWAYS said that! The guitar solo on What Am I Gonna Do With the Rest of My Life was Hag and in my opinion one of the finest guitar solos in country music.
Vince Gill said pretty much the same thing, that Merle was a helluva guitar player.

Fantastic live performance, better tempo than the record, imho, terrific musicians, and what a voice!
I always loved the brass to end the song. The end and the Resurrection.
Great song and singer
Love it all 😍
