Merle and Marty were such incredible poets as well as musicians. This is real country music, not pop stars in cowboy hats. They sing of real pain and experiences that they genuinely lived.
Merle yes. Marty was great but he doesn’t top George Jones, Whitley, or Hank Williams. He’s definitely top 10 but not the best of the best. Merle is, since he’s the greatest overall country singer/songwriter.
In God's grand honesty, there were never two more beautiful voices in all of country music. (Roy Orbison withstanding)... And I'd bet dollars to donuts that all them boys are singing in them old saloons in the clouds and in the arms of the almighty right now. Rest easy Marty & Merle. Roy too.
I agree it will always be Merle's song. Yet I do like the Dwight Yoakum medley version. Dwight starts of with my favorite song of his "It Won't Hurt". Then to Merle's "Today I Started Loving You Again". Then finishes It Won't Hurt. Dwight does it justice as a tribute to Bonnie Owens and his friendship with Merle.
There's a CZcams video of Merle and Tammy Wynette on stage together in England singing this song, and I encourage you to watch it. It's sad (to me) but also moving and deeply powerful. When Tammy comes in on the 2nd verse, the timber of her voice is UNREAL. She misses a few lyrics but the intensity and soul of her voice is amazing. Find it, I believe you'll be impressed.
