Comparing Annonas - Sugar apple, Cherimoya, Soursop | Similarities & Differences between the Annonas

  • Hello everyone, in this video I wanted to compare 3 of my favorite fruits part of the #Annonaceae family that often get confused for one another.
The Annonaceae family is known for its fruits that consist of a ‘custard’ taste and for its unique & symmetrical fruits that are produced. Not only are these fruits attractive to the eye but are prized for there sweet and exotic taste that rivals to no other fruit on earth.
The sugar apple (A. squamosa) is known for its bumpy surface and creamy white inside accompanied by many seeds. Sugar apple is unique with its chewy texture and juicy flavor.
    A. cherimola or Cherimoya is better recognized for its smooth and scaled surface usually the shape of a heart. The inside is noticeably different as it is usually smoother profile than the sugar apple and stays together when eating.
    A. muricata or Soursop (Guanábana) is notorious for its size and shape. The fruit bears tiny spikes that are soft to the touch - but it’s size is goliath compared to that of the sugar apple and cherimoya. The soursop is also prized for its healing properties that are abundant in the fruit.
Out of the three Annonas compared I like soursop(Guanabana) due to the amount of fruit (pulp) you are able to extract and use for juices for the following days - one of these fruits can feed a whole family.

Thank you very much for this very useful and interesting video. I grew up in the tropics. We have two large Soursop trees with large fruits. Since living in Australia, I don't have access to exotic fruits like these. Then I found a lonely and sad looking Soursop at the corner of a pile of common fruits such as oranges and apples on specials. I thought this Soursop is on special because it is so tiny. I took it home. Then I found this to be nothing like a Soursop ! My curiosity took me to find out that what I have bought is in fact a sugar Apple ! Now I know the differences between Soursop and Sugar Apple. By the way, some websites actually confused a Soursop with a Sugar Apple because of their exterior similarities.

But there are soursops that are very sour, we have to put either sugar or condensed milk when we make juice with them. The preparation of custard apple or soursop is similar, like Yvonne I prefer custard apple. Custard apple juice is great.

Love soursop. It's not a good name to describe the fruit, which is super sweet, smooth in texture, soft, smells like Juicyfruit gum or fruit punch. Great in smoothies. Or eaten with a spoon! Thanks for the video. All the native tropical fruits have perfumes and intense flavors that we don't experience here in the US. There is no comparison between a commercial golden pineapple from Costa Rica for the US market, and a white pineapple in the Grenadines. The aromas are so spicy and intense! Reason enough to travel, just to try them.

They can get 2-3 times the size in this video. Of course there will be less number of fruit but a lot more "meat" and sweeter. With the number of seeds in sugar apple, the size definitely makes a difference. Happy Harvesting,

Soursop is more of a sour tasting fruit but still has notes of sweetness, it is not as chewy and creamy as cherimoya it is more watery and loose like cotton almost but has a unique creamy taste as well but is best if you blend it into a drink but can also be eaten out of hand like a cherimoya as well, both have really good health benefits.

@@gardenflorida have you tasted red geffner atemoya? It's the new craze right now with Asian folks and getting a lot of mixed reviews. Miami fruits was charging over $100. How insane. You can be their competitor but for annonas. Have you done a tour of all your annonas lately? And do taste tests!
