Before he started farming, Rane was a professional saxophonist. He built his fruit business completely from scratch, starting off with just his bike and $200 worth of inventory from local farmer’s markets. It didn’t take long before his friends further north started asking him to ship tropical fruits to them. That was when he realized the full potential of his tropical fruit business, setting up a website to connect with customers from across the United States and Canada.
Rane is passionate about sustainability and the food he grows, and that passion is what’s led to his success. Being a new entrepreneur did mean he had to figure some things out as he went along. In this interview, we’ll hear the biggest lessons he learned during the early growth years of the business. He’ll also share the key skills and traits someone needs for farm life, and what systems and tools he’s implemented since starting to continue his business growth.
Miami Fruit really started to expand after Rane purchased his own farm. We’ll take a look around the property in this interview and find out the types of crops he grows, which fruits are the most profitable, and how a new farmer can best acquire the knowledge they need to succeed.

All the boxes I've wanted to buy was over $200, it's cheaper for my to drive to the farm! But luckily I have found some farmers Market here in Tampa ☺️.
I have a farm, but I’m in a really rugged area that takes time to prepare even one fruit tree hole, so even though I’ve been at it for 6 years(starting from a bare cow pasture) I’ve only gotten in around 160 trees. They aren’t all planted in rows, it looks more natural and some are even on berms, so it’s a part time job taking care of it all. It’s average temperature 87 degrees so the weeds and grasses grow very fast. Anyway, I knew I wanted to sell and share fruits and nuts with my community, and with my son, but I never thought of making a full blown business out of it. It’s like he said, if you aren’t willing to go out and do the work the opportunities won’t present themselves. We are comfortable with what we are doing and so we have no desire to expand. We are always planting new trees, every fall we add another 15-20. We still have two acres left. If anyone out there is feeling called to this type of work, now is a good time, go for it.
Big island farm?
@@alanwolenskyii9561 correct. 18 types of grafted durian, 13 jackfruit trees(most are grafted), eight chempedak, 12 mangosteen, 4 marang, etc… all the good stuff.
@Mike 4.1 most of everything I have is a grafted clone. Avocados from a clone about two feet tall when purchased, will start to fruit at year 4-5. The grafted Jackfruits don’t seem to fruit any faster than the seeds, which I have both of. Any fruit worth growing doesn’t start to produce anything substantial until year five. Durians are about a 7-10 year wait from a clone. Mangosteens don’t benefit at all from cloning. It’s a waiting game.
i am looking to own a small farm in your arae is it posible
@@tuantongrujiraviriyapinyo2856 it depends. If you have the extra money to hire an excavator to dig the holes, it’s very possible. You have to have determination to keep on going year after year, and also finding the trees can be difficult. Grafted durians are available but with a high demand and limited people grafting. Grafted jackfruits are hard to come by too. It depends on what you decide to grow as your crops I guess.
He didn't start with $200 in his pocket... all his fruit comes from a mature orchard that his dad spent years developing..... misleading title
Spot on
Yeah. All i need is somewhere free to live so i can save all my cash to buy land without a loan…. Then i need a dad with an established orchard. Anyone can do it.
well considering he lived in a trailer , it doesn't seem he came from humble beginnings.
I was wondering how a guy with $200 gets into 7 acres there..lol something wasn't adding up.

Absolutely, this was great to watch!
Also, a lot of the fruit that he sells isn't from his own orchard, or even from Florida. He can't meet his demand with only the fruit from his dad's orchard. They buy fruit from the wholesaler and upsell it to customers just like any other seller
So many things dont add up?
Alot of plantations near him
@@ronbaker6000 sure he gets some of his fruit locally but that's not nearly enough to keep up with the demand they have. I'm willing to bet that they get the majority of their product from the wholesaler

I invested about $10k over the last few years in subtropical and tropical fruit trees and vines. Today ive got a net worth in plants of around $100k. I mass germinate rare seeds, take clones via air layer and cuttings, graft rarer varieties onto common rootstock I grow from less rare species, and seek out newly discovered or nearly unheard of fruit species. That's been my trick so far. Great Lakes Rare Fruits is my business now. Specializing in Kadsura coccinea, Dovyalis spp, the Annonaceae and Myrtaceae families, but I'm growing everything from durian and cempedak to guava tamarillos and himalayan honeysuckle. Had I known about the rare fruit life, I wouldn't have wasted 20 years growing illicit plants and fungi. Lol

Truly a great interview by both parties

All of those fruits can easily grow here in front of our house in Indonesia. Glad to know how you grow fruit out there in the US and how hurricane can easily wipe out the farms, that's pretty challenging. I would like you to come taste most of our exotic fruits just under $10 and most importantly you can buy almost everything all year long. 😁

The fruits shown in the video are mostly tropical fruits. So, the tropicals become exotic in temperate zones and the fruits/flowers from temperate become exotic in tropical regions

Great! It's wonderful to see young people trying to make a change. Love your farm and love your videos as well.
I work as an expeditor at one of the largest ports in the world. Shipping any perishables has always been tricky. But the exotic fruit sector has so much potential I'm seriously considering basing my entire career on it.
Hi! Thanks for the comment. I grew up in South America, home of lots of exotic fruits. Whats the best idea for me to enter the business?
over priced
Hopefully you live somewhere tropical.
Why do you call tropical fruits as exotic fruits? I'm from Asian tropical country and these fruits are found and grow everywhere here. So, can we also call fruits that don't grow here as exotic fruits such as apple, pear, stone fruits and etc.?
I’m sure when he says ‘local growers’ that includes central and South America. LOL
awesome idea, there are so many fruits that most people have never seen or heard of!
That's true! Any fruit you'd like to try?
Very motivational. Nice to see someone pull themselves up by the bootstraps and raw hustle instead of debt and handouts.

The amount of work and organization required to run such a business is staggering. I am an avid gardener myself and just my one acre food forest is tough to manage. Tough is an understatement. The overhead costs are huge. Super impressive 🤙🏼👍🏼🙏🏼
Its easier for him because of the tropical setting, tropical farming is like 10x easier

These guys are awesome!!!! I already liked what they were doing but now after seeing this side of them and the hustle, love and respect they put into everything... I am so impressed!
Totally! These folks are awesome and inspiring. 👏
$100 per box is reasonable actually probably too cheap for the amount of effort going into this business. He’s paying good wages and his expense ratio is very high for an agriculture business, but he is still in business. He obviously doesn’t pay himself a lot, but he could easily cash out in land value alone with a good chunk. I love watching entrepreneurs in it for more than just money. He has a true passion for fruit! 🤗
that's quite expensive but if people are willing to pay that's actually a good thing, they value quality food produced in good conditions
$100 a box is expensive 😂 just go to your local Asian market they’re much cheaper.
It's not actually $100 and the fruit isnt harvested ripe and its not shipped on a plane, I've only had one good box and I've ordered 5 and all took 2 weeks from the time they were shipped to get here and were still completely dark green and never ripened except for one box of mysore bananas which were really good and all ripened properly but that was the only one I would ever order again. They also falsely advertise their dried fruits, its $20 for a bag but they dont tell you the bag is an only 2 inch by 2 inch ziplock bag with a tiny lil piece of dried fruit and every review says it's a scam and that they wish they read the reviews on the dried fruits! The cheapest size box is 5 pounds for $90 plus $20 shipping and the next size is $120 for 7-9 pounds and $20 shipping and this is for their bananas and advacados. All the better fruits are super expensive , it's like $200 for a Jack fruit or a durian and I believe those are the only ones that get shipped on planes, nothing else I've seen has said it was shipped by plane and nothing I've ordered was shipped on plane! I stopped ordering from them when I baught a rambutan box and all I got was a box of black mush I found tons of tropical fruits at a neighboring towns Safeway that are all way higher quality and super cheap in comparison, I would recomend Asian markets and Safeways way before I would Miami fruit , I hate to say it cause their business is a cool idea but it's way way way to overpriced, if things were like half the price I'd maybe order again but I've wasted like $800 and only gotten one good box and a crap ton of disappointment with all the other ones.
I've heard your testimony from others. Going by the pictures I've seen it's a waste.
@@mistyn380 He is not only selling Asian fruits. He is selling fruits from all over the world. Alot fruits from South America you will never see in the Markets.
Great example of hard work. Creative thinking and vision.

I have tried their product, found them to be extremely overpriced for what you get. The local Asian market seems to offer better value or even the exotic fruit aisle at the local grocery chain is cheaper.
It's not the same taste. People who actually have tastebuds care about these things. I grew up eating this stuff from the trees, and you can't tell me that they taste the same as the crap you find in the asian markets that was picked under-ripe and shipped across the globe - unless you are missing some braincells. I am well aware of the taste, child. I grew up eating organic stuff, I am a gardener myself, and traveled extensively. I also bought the stuff from Miami Fruits and was very unimpressed in terms of taste, quantity, and quality. Unless you're his paid puppet, you should really do research before you put your foot in your mouth.
(Edited to include your reply).
Looks overpriced to me too. That $100 box looked to have MAYBE $20-30 worth of fruit in it. Like one of the items looked to be a single plantain which costs what? 50 cents at full retail? And from what I saw 75% of that box is available at a decent size local grocery store or Asian market. You're probably paying more for the overnight shipping than the value of the fruit. Unless you live somewhere remote and absolutely love and have to have tropical fruit, not worth it IMO.
@@Josh-gi8ht In my box, I got 1 cacao pod, 1 small caviar lemon, 5 small kumquats, 1 small banana, 1 small yellow dragon fruit, 1 blood orange, and 1 small star apple. The shipping was extra. Not worth the 140 dollars approximately.
@@RMConsulting That's insane. The lemon, kumquats, banana, and orange are maybe $4-5 total. The dragon fruit maybe 5. Everything but the star apple and cacao pod are going to be pretty easily available at higher end grocery stores. Even if the Star apple would be $5 and the cacao $10, that's still only $25 total, so you're paying AT LEAST 4x actual value plus shipping to get "special" fruit. I'll never understand why the internet treats these people like business geniuses for conning people into overpaying for things.
"focussed on long term growth"... so that means they are losing a TON of money every month and totally losing money year over year... you hear the same thing on Shark Tank all the time... "our revenue was 8 million dollars last year. Oh yeah... our net income was minus 2 million". Customer acquisition cost with this amount of revenue spent on advertising is going to be enormous!

Never had any of those míami/exotic fruits back then and boom so guy with a man bun eating dragon fruits convinces me to buy a bunch of them. I bought them because of how soothing it was seeing them be cut, now i can’t go without having some stocked up. I love me the yellow dragon fruits
I really would love to replicate this in 🇿🇲 Zambia.
All the best. I would love to do it too in Kenya.
@Mercyln Kerebi I'd love to do it anywhere, was also thinking about Africa. Just need someone to do it with
@@acinamatata6342 I would be glad to do it with you. This is absolutely magical.

Cant wait to try exotic tropical fruit from his farm🍈🍍🍇🍑🍊🍉🍎🍋🍐
As a miami OG who grew up selling mangos, aguacate, mamey, etc…this dude is classic miami hustle, hundo per box, respect 😂
I saw an ackee tree also. Alot of Jamaicans in Florida and around the US would definitely like to get a hold of some 🙂
Thank you for watching, Aakkeemm876! You can definitely order from Rane. Did you spot your favorite food in this video? :)
Yes, We have ackee here. I'm in the same area as them. As you know tho, it has to ripen and open on its own and is very perishable so it would need to be shipped as same day or overnight...to receive it fresh. Also, I would think we would have to process it since its toxic if not done properly, as Im sure you know. that would take a lot of work to sell.
Mamey and guava shakes are probably one of the best you can possibly have, people who tried it know what I’m saying
I prefer sapodilla, avocado and durian. I've tried mamey and guava but it doesn't hold candle to those.
This is an excellent interview. Excited to try
Thank you! Keep us updated would love to hear how it goes!
This is really amazing!
Omg upflip made it to florida
We did! We will definitely be back.
More farming/restaurant videos please. Thanks.
More to come! Any specific niche you'd like to see, Mohamed?
@@UpFlip farmers making money in winter. Hydroponic/aeroponic businesses. More Cloud kitchens. I truly enjoy your content. Thank You.

I ordered fruit 3 years ago from him, but I still haven't received it. Maybe one day he will do the right thing.
he is real man. bravo
Did you enjoy the video? Thanks for watching! ☺️
I don't care what people say. There will always be a lot of luck involved in starting a business.
It’s not luck it’s his passion! When you do what you’re passionate about you get lucky!
How’s the maintenance of the farm? It looks like a lot work although very satisfying if you like farming
Thanks for the interview.
Glad you love this video! Hope you also watch our other content and find value in them. Any business you want to see next? ☺️
Wow amazing fruit, i love your fruit beacause my country have a lote.
I come from cambodai ❤❤❤
As a Miami resident I visit Homestead a lot. He is no way has it all. I bet he receives 20 ft container of exotic fruits from Central America, stores it in the warehouse behind him and ships them out as "miami farm" ftuits. For suckers he makes a story and instagram. if you watch carefully 2:30 he says he spends on shipping and the amount of product. this is a 20 or 40 ft container of fruits.

Thank you for watching and engaging with the content! ☺️
All the fruits that I see here have my country ECUADOR. i love this video
Wow, greetings to Ecuador! Which fruit was your favorite in this video, mr Clavijo?
Farming has always been a very lucrative business but it comes with its headaches. Bad weather and pests is every farmers worst nightmare. Prices of vegetables and fruits fluctuate like gold due to supply and demand. If you farm in Hawaii with 5 acres and grow the right crops, you can easily make 5 digit profits a month.
This video was great, well put together.
Thanks for watching! Are you new to our channel?
@@UpFlip Nope. Been here for some time. I can see the growth
Enjoy your beautiful farm and stay healthy organically! I have ordered many of those fruit seeds from Asia, Etsy etc., but I am scared not to lose them lack knowledge how to grow them.
Drinking a Mamey Sapote smoothie with a fruit from Miami Fruit when this showed up on my CZcams feed. Have been a Large Mystery box subscriber for over a year. Happy to support this small company but I never knew the story
Thanks for sharing! Did you enjoy the video? Thanks for watching! ☺️
I bought fruits from them. 😋 l😋. If you're not happy with shipment, they'll do anything to make you happy. Excellent customer service ❤
That's so great @elizclark4912 ! What kind of fruits did you get?
@@UpFlip Custard apples and Naseberry. Delicious!
Great! True job. Watching you from Washington DC. Well done brother. 👍👌💪💘
I think that's so awesome that durian tastes like French onion ice-cream fruit because if you are a fruitarian then you definitely want something that tastes like that every once in a while, lol
Rad dude. 🙌🔥
My dream 😍
Yes, it sounds amazing. Are you looking to start a farm, Jen?
You forgot to say that he had plenty of land and equipment when he only had two hundred bucks in his pocket
He is living my dream:)
