    There is a multi- function gear that has a track on the underside that has pin that rides on a track that controls the thread out and back of the tape. Pin was broken off on the machine I had, a gold star combo unit, if I remember it was a plastic gear, the pin and linkage was bronze or some metal, I silver soldered the pin and re- aligned the gearing , a reference hole , and success! The assembly all worked properly on the first shot, I used this set in my kitchen for years after that, sold it for 10$ when I was selling my house.

    I have two of these Emersons, for a while I would buy these every time I saw one in the thrift store. Don't see them anymore. I had them new from Wal-mart for $99 back in the late nineties or early this century. But when the originals stopped rewinding or playing tapes, I bought used ones. Still use these last two for monitors for my VHS/DVD combos. The tape players on both TVs have been broken for years. Got a problem with the tape player on one of the combos, now, hence, looking at DIY repair videos.

    I fixed both issues by myself and searching online. I found out how to shut off the blinking green prog timer on the tv/vcr unit. I also found out why my tv/vcr was shutting off automatically. It has to do with the dta converter - you go into the menu on the converter remote and shut the power saver off that's in the settings menu. My tv/vcr is all hooked up and running now. I just have to figure out where to put my antenna to get the most channels. It brings back memories using one of these tv/vcr combo's. I also bought one for my livingroom. Now with the set up I have, I can watch my vhs tapes, dvd's, and blue rays. Great!

    Hey, 12volt, I have a 19" Sylvania TV/VCR CRT combo unit from 2001 that has an issue where the tape plays fine and it can do a slow fast forward and rewind where you can still see the movie on the screen but as soon as I press stop and then try to do a high speed fast forward or fast rewind, the TV shuts off. Do you think bad solder joints would be the likely culprit in this situation as well?

    Thanks for this video, those tape sensors may be what's wrong with my 2003 Philips VR-140 (PAL) unit as it yesterday started randomly shutting down and flashing "2" error code in it's display.
    First time it did that was when I was fast forwarding the tape to the end. It stopped but shut down displaying that error code.
    Another time I rewinded a tape shortly and pressed play, sounded like the motors had real hard time moving and it shut down again, displaying the "2" error code again.
    Last time it did when I changed the cassette to another one, after it took the cassette in, it shut down and displayed the "2" error code again.
    Otherwise the VCR works fine. I've had it since new and this is the first time it gives any troubles.
    I also have 1999 Nokia 21" CRT TV for playing retro videogames, for example Mattel Intellivision and using retro computers like Commodore Amiga 500. And of course watching VHS tapes for authentic VHS viewing experience :)

    The light gun on old game systems like the nes classic will only work with a CRT TV. Just a FYI.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 5 lety +1

      Correct, because it is timing the scan. The tube is basically a flying spot scanner. The light gun is aimed at the screen, but it only sees the "flying spot" when the trigger is pulled. The system knows the exact spot of the screen based on the timing of the video signal. There are 240 lines per field, and the the system knows the exact line and where the beam is as it is fed out in real time.
      This is true for all analog TVs. If you are using a CRT set with digital processing the light gun wil not work just like on any flat panel TV due to digital delay.

    Dave, i have something important to tell you about my emerson EWC1303 TV/VCR Combo. The heads are not broken. But when i play a tape, the picture on the left top corner and down to the left bottom corner, or white text on a black screen, there is streaks of static showing and goes away as soon as the text fades. It has been doing ot since 10/28/20 and i got it off ebay for $155.32 on 09/05/20. It came on 09/16/20.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 3 lety +1

      That is generally a sign that the heads are wearing, and can no longer recover the higher frequency of the peak white. Remember that video is FM modulated. The carrier is 1Mhz deviation between 3.4 and 4.4Mhz. High contrast image, especially something with a sharp edge push the modulator to maximim deviation, and when the heads start to wear they can no longer detect the higher frequencies as the head gap is wearing slightly wider.

    I just dug out my family’s old RCA T09082 TV VCR Combo that we used in our car when I was a kid on road trips, for my 6yr olds that think this small “old fashioned” tv is super cool. It’s been stored in a container in our basement so there was some dust. I used some compressed air spray to clean the little bit of dust from the inside but the picture on the screen is just that black and white static 😞 the sound works fine, as do all the other buttons and functions, just no picture from the vhs tape. Any idea what could be causing this?

      Sometimes it can fail and display static but play audio

    Wow! This looks to be the exact same problem as mine. I coaxed a VHS in and, sure enough, it doesn't power off anymore.
    I do have another problem: The VOL buttons are sometimes confused for the CH buttons... thoughts?
    PS, would it be possible to get measurements of the VHS cover/flap? Mines long gone, but I bet I could 3D print an acceptable replacement.

    The problem we are having is we put a VHS tape in, it accepts it just fine...but we press play and it tries for a few seconds then the tv shuts off...

    I bet the biggest reason TV/VCRs & VCRs in general brake is because people don’t turn them on first before shoving a tape in it. I had 1 that broke, my very 1st TV/VCR I believe was a Symphonic SC313B I think it was & it broke when I was a kid, probably cause of my brother. I stopped using the vcr part when it was having jamming problems.

    I had a 19" TV/VCR combo set with the exact same UI. Branded under the name Symphonic.
    The remote started to not work and I traced the problem to the IR sensor pickup in the TV and I resoldered it and that seemed to help for a little while. Then the set started glitching up and showing weird characters on screen and the screen brightness would get dim. I replaced it with a small 19" LCD TV DVD combo which I still have today, Made by Sansui. Now to transfer my library of recorded VHS tapes.

    Some of the old CRT tv audio receiver boards can be used to receive some cellphone bands and or transmitting on the cellphone bands. Although I have never done this nore do I actualley know how to do this. But I have heard this said on ham radio many times.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 5 lety

      Perhaps 35 years ago. Original analog cell band was in the 850 spectrum. Ntsc tv uhf channels 70 - 83 used those frequencies. They deleted 70-83 from tv band in 80s. Then recently they deleted 60-69 to free up the 700 band and the next to go is ch 50 - 59 for 600mhz spectrum.
      Moot point these days. All analog cell networks were turned down around 2007.

    One time I had a TV/VCR combi unit that wouldn't stay powered on unless there was a tape inserted. So you had to have a tape handy if you just wanted to watch TV! Later on, it started eating tapes as well and we threw it out; much too fiddly for an amateur like me to fix! I'd be scared of damaging the TV tube part that has lethal voltages...

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 4 lety

      The only real place the voltages is high is the big red wire that goes to the tube and it has thick insulation. I only got bit once and it felt like i hit my thumb with a hammer and I lost all feeling in that hand for about 2 minutes and then it hurt like hell for about 30 min. No I'll effects and that was 30kv they went in my elbow and out my thumb. It did crack my thumb nail and left a ridge in it that is present. Look at my right thumb in any video and you will see my 30kv scar.
