Bloody brilliant mate. I really like your simple, no fuss walk throughs. Watching your videos teaches me a lot. I'd love to see a video on the most common causes a VHS machine refuses to load a tape, and the remedies to fix it. I have collected a few old decks from rubbish heaps and try to practice on these machines. And the most failures I see are they don't load tapes but just lowers the tray when the tape is inserted. Then after a few seconds ejects the tape again. Thank you
One suggestion: Make intro loudness lower, and/or put some compression on your audio output for the whole video to get it louder... Thank you for those precious repair videos ! Right to repair forever!
I'm one of those weirdos, LOL! I record off of MTV 90s and MTV 80s and use it sometimes as background music when I have guests. The sound is fantastic in hi-fi stereo and I don't care much about the picture quality, so it's all good. As a kid I used my family's VCR so much that I guess there's something in me that still loves those things. Love your videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge!
When this happened to me, I just put a drop of superglue on that long shaft of the top piece that holds everything together. That way everything turns as it should AND the clutch does not fall apart anymore (Sony SLV-E1000)
i have a JVC HR-S7800U. It has a constant tape diet. i am thankful the machine's metabolism is in good shape, as it doesn't eat all tapes all the time. i will need to open up the VCR and maybe i can make the machine a little anorexic, where tapes are not on the menu! thanks for sharing your know-how in your video!
I just cleaned the heads on a Samsung dvd-9700 dvd-vcr combo and its working really well now, thanks for the simple quick tutorial. I have been testing the capture cards i have to see if any of them bypass Macrovision. so far only my Hauppauge colossus pci-e capture card can.
Hi Dave, I would change that red washer that holds the clutch, because I saw these get weak and pop out almost instantly. Otherwise, I am still recording on my vcr's, even on my Beta, Ha... Love your videos!
I wouldn't. Save them for legacy playback. The heads only have so many hours and you get no warning. One day they look great and the next the picture is bad and guess what no parts available.
I was always paranoid that things like that would fail again, so I bought all new parts. My boss hated it when we had a repeat failure. I know that new parts aren't an option for you, but you are so good at improvising. Something I'm learning with my old truck. I enjoy your videos so much. Great fix!
What I was in the business my boss would always say quote every part that could possibly fail, that way the cost of the repair would always be over what I go ahead amount was and the customer could say you know what I'll buy a new one. That was good for the owner of the store because he could sell them a new one that was bad for me because I was paid only for successful repairs. I repair that was declined I got nothing on zero. Most shops are like that most repair shops by the way are like that. They pay their text peace work for completed work only. And shops that charge an estimate fee typically don't pay the tech that fee that goes to pay for the overhead. There was a period of about 5 months when while in a labor dispute with a current employer I went back and worked in the repair business at another shop that did charge an estimate fee. I was told up front that the estimate fee what 100% to the shop it's that's what kept the doors open and the lights on. They actually wanted me to stay after the company I currently work for went back to work and I told him I couldn't afford to work for them. Yes they paid well, 100% of the shop labor went to me for the work I did last the estimate fee. Estimate fee was $50 for every unit so if the repair labor came to $100 I made $50 which is exactly what I made at the shop that I was at for 20 years. However if something came in and the estimate was $120 customer said no I got nothing shop kept the $50 estimate fee. If item that was repaired cost $75 to fix shop kept 50 gave me 25. Not very fair didn't last long there. Another shop that I looked at briefly offered me hourly wages however they were so cheap that they couldn't even give me a place to park my car. Had to find street parking in an industrial compound. Every day would have meant a minimum 1 km walk from my car to the shop and back. No place to have lunch within walking distance, so they expected everyone to bring a lunch and eat at their bench. I interviewed that place and then said thanks but no thanks. Oh and I had metal detectors that you had to go through entering and leaving the building, and you were not permitted to have a personal cell phone or any electronic device on your person when you entered. That company incidentally was Best Buy.

I sometimes had to repossess units. That was dangerous work. I nearly got pushed down a flight of stairs. I also saw a lot of 70s sound equipment from Sansui, Sony, Marantz, etc. The boss would set the overhead so high that I never made very much on commissions, but the love of the job kept me going. As a Tech, I was undoubtedly the most educated, and underpaid employee in that company.

I too still Record older TV shows on tapes yet, I just find it easier than using DVD Recorders, As that ways all i need do is set the time i wanna record the show and the players speed and off i go, simple, with DVD Recording its a bit more complicated depending on whats being done.Why i Prefer tape recording first.
Watching this because I have an old Mitsubishi VCR I came across and the heads are spitting the tape back out. If it’s in play it only spits a tiny bit, if I fast forward it’s a mess! Only reason I got hope to try and fix it is while fast forwarding a tape, somehow it managed to wrap around the drum and showed a couple images very choppy as it was fast forwarding. So I know it’s still working, just the actual tape reel going back into the tape itself isn’t working. I’mma watch some more videos and see if I can’t take this thing apart and fix it hopefully.
That machine reminds me of a blaunkpaunt (i dont remember how this german brand is written) vcr which has almost same board and tape mechanism. It too ate one tape and i fixed it but i could find a replacement for its broken video head.
I got 2 VCR's, and as recently as late '17 I bought a mini-hifi (JVC UX-T150), this is my computer sound too now as I'm watching this. Does this qualify me as a "tapehead"? 😁
My mother still records TV onto VHS tapes but not because she's a weirdo as you seem to think. She's 91 and using a VCR is all she's used to using. Tried years ago to get her a PVR but she couldn't understand how to work it no matter how many times I explained it. She's also never had internet or even a mobile phone.
I'm surprised she can manage with a VCR, being that they have to be used with a converter box now. My mother learned to use a DVR when she was 88 but could never manage a VCR if her life depended on it.
I just bought a dvd, VCR combo at a thrift store really really hoping for vcr to work but it didn't. I had to hide it before my 9 year old autistic child who is obsessed with vhs tapes got home from school and be disappointed. I hope I can fix it 🤞Thank you!
First I don't think its the best thing in the world, it is very convenient to record on tape to record tv shows, that's what made them so popular if the first place. and if you don't care about the quality, which most of the time I don't, I simply use it to record shows I'm going to miss while out, and I enjoy fast forwarding through the commercials, my internet sucks here so I don't subscribe to any streaming services, got tired of all the pausing and buffering. So if I can record it myself and play back at my leisure why not. HD or SD from 10 feet away and my eyesight it looks pretty much the same. I don't think that makes me weird. There are much better reasons why I am proudly weird. :-)
Bought an old VCR from a thrift store today. When I put a VHS in, the VCR makes a loud squeaking sound then says error and won’t play the tape. Any advice on how to fix that?
Doesn't hold up. 3d printed parts are not strong enough. I have tried to fit parts that have been 3d printed and none have lasted. One guy sent me a vcr with 5 printed gears. The first 3 broke before I could get the machine together the 4th held long enough to ship it back then broke as soon as the owner tried to use it.
Im a wierdo trying to use these machines alot, you still get a like from me 😊 Got to start being some money again soon in these machines because i know im not alone liking to watch ex rentals and what not. There no more new machines to buy so you got to use what you find. I know i would pay to have my machines serviced by a professional tech, if i could find one 😭 I live in Sweden so i guess im out of luck (the land of streamers).

Reason if it's dirty the tape itself would pick it up and possibly contaminate the sound/ control head! Now Is that better than someone saying to 3D print a part?
And the tape guides. Actually the owner just lives up the street and owns one of the eateries in town so i got a gift card for a free meal so everyone is happy. Has some old tapes from a cooking show he did for community tv he wanted to show.
I wonder if the VFD issue is one of those IC protectors that used to fail if you so much as looked at them wrong! Still not as bad as those 'wickmann' round style fuses that Philips used to favour, and would simply disintegrate internally. Such is life..
I didn't investigate as there was no money in it. I got the same, a couple of free pizzas from the local place. He doesn't use it to record and could care less of the clock worked. Probably better off anyway as the click would likely be just blinking 12:00!
@@Oldgamingfart there hasn't been money in electronics repair for 20 years. I got out before the mass exodus.i watched all the shops slowly close their doors. I do it now for the CZcams revenue. I have enough content now that generates a constant income stream. It's not much but it adds up every month. So I can afford to fix things for prices that nobody else could even consider.
@@12voltvids Yes, the writing was definitely on the wall by the early-to-mid-nineties when the price of consumer electronics started to fall quite considerably (thanks to cheap imports, etc), and coupled with the complexities of miniaturisation, brought with it its own challenges. To put it in layman's terms: an absolute ball-ache! Kudos to those like yourself who were able to evolve through it and change industry, though mostly through necessity I'd imagine. And I have to say this channel is an absolute goldmine of information, and for like-minded an excellent resource. Long may it continue! 👍
@@Oldgamingfart I wouldn't have said early 90s, but certainly by the late 90s and early 2000s. For me i saw the big shift start about 2001 and by 2003 I was out of the repair business. 2002 i saw a big income decline that was not sustainable so i got out. Many others left the business in the following years. I may have stuck around a bit longer but an opportunity came along and i bailed. That and the owner was a difficult man to work for. I will never say anything bad about him other than he was difficult to work for and there was a revolving door in the shop where tech would start and quit within a few weeks because of the owner. AFAIK he is still in the business. His shop closed on 2012 but he started working for another retailer in a neighbouring city that caters to the rich and famous also known as the British properties with their multi million dollar mansions in West Vancouver. He would be on his early 70s by now.

Could I send you a VHS player to examine and/or repair? Its the same exact type of player you just used in this video. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to press stop and then eject, but the one time I didn't, I instead pressed pause and then eject and some of the tape was stuck in the machine. Thankfully I got the tape out but it wasn't able to replay the VHS without causing the same crinkling problem
I dont care if its not worth the cost. The vcr tape itself or the player? It's ok if not, I was just trying to stay hopeful and ask someone who knows his stuff
@@bulbakurb2385 here is the problem. I'm in canada. Shipping would be close to 100 each way and repairs could be 100 depending on what's wrong. That 300 to fix an old machine that I see regularly posted on Facebook for 10 to 20. Its your money I don't mind fixing them but for s VHS it just isn't economical. Svhs yes, betamax yes and 8mm hi8 for sure as these are not as plentiful and people have old media they want to play but a regular VHS no, not worth fixing but if you want it fixed I can probably fix it. Just keep the Shipping costs in mind. I have more junk around here than I can count from people that thought they wanted to fix something sent it to me and I fixed it and it's still sitting here. Eventually I try to sell to get at least my time and parts covered. Yesterday I sold a 37"tv that was brought in back on January. It needed a hand full of caps. Repair bill was 70 total. Was abandoned. Put it up on Facebook for 50, no takers. Dropped to 40 nothing then 30 nothing then 20 still nothing finally I sold it for 10 bucks. That covered the parts and that was it. This happens all the time.

I have a problem with a JVC HR-S7000 when playing a video tape, the image is clear, when I record from TV, I have horizontal black lines and blink. I cleaned the recording head. can you help me with some advice? Thank you!
Probably worn out video heads. What people don't realize is that machines with worn heads will generally play pre-recorded tapes and tapes recorded on other machines for quite a while even though the heads are badly worn. Furthermore if they make a recording on the machine with bad heads that tape will usually play pretty good on another machine but they cannot play self-recorded tapes. The reason this happens is as the head Gap wears the signal it records wiggles around on the track it doesn't record a nice full track with video signal it tends to move as the frequency shifts up and down. So you end up with a signal that is very low compared to a good head. I taped this recorded on a different machine has the full width of the track on the tape and the Warren head is able to read that entire track even though the head is worn and as the head spins it may be picking up different portions of the track because the full width is there it's able to play the image back. Same thing with recording on a bad machine and playing it on a good machine because the full width of the head is available it's able to pick off enough of the signal that you can get a good image off of it but when the worn head attempts to play a recording that it made because the track itself is not the full width as the single that's recorded on the partial track passes in and out of the focal point of the Warren head you get dropouts black lines streaks etc. One of the first things I learned when I took a training course was how to spot bad heads. They always showed up first on machines playing self-recorded tapes. If it's a forehead machine chances are it's the EP heads that have worn quickest because they are a narrower Gap same with the Hi-Fi heads. You start noticing noise, a fluttering sound in the HiFi audio track of self-recorded tapes.

eating tapes means that the loading mechanism, including the belts, pulleys, etc., cause things not to work right when playing, fast-forwarding, and rewinding a tape. the take-up reel doesn't get wound, and doesn't turn, and the supply reel keeps turning. next thing you know, the excess tape ends up getting caught in the mechanism, twisting the tape and ruining whatever footage was recorded on that portion of the tape. JVC VCR's had that dubious distinction of having this happen. you are going to have a fuzzy part of the tape in the area where the tape was eaten when playing it, with dropouts.
That's just a little shock absorber. The idea is like on some of the old reel to reel that had a secondary passive capstan on the supply side that was driven just by the friction of the tape running over it. Helps the tape feed into transport and equalize tension between the center and edge of tape.

i got a VHS-C adapter recently. i have a very nice Mitsubishi S-VHS deck that has never eaten a tape before in my memory, it is currently 2/2 of the VHS-C tapes i have fed through this adapter. i believe the adapter is causing cog slack. any idea how to fix the adapter?
Those adapters were a joke when new and 40 years on haven't gotten any better. I have the attitude that anyone that bought into that joke of a system vhsc deserves what they get. You'll probably need to find another one. I have 4 for transferring tapes 3 are broken. The 4th is just hanging in there. When it breaks I am going to have to use an old camera to play, that is if that stull works when I need it.

At 9:22 you said people that own these machines have them for one reason and one reason only. To play old tapes. That’s not true. I need a vcr to rewind tapes to i don’t mess up the heads on my Panasonic 1980p ag I use to digitize vhs. I need just a rewinder vcr. I hd a rewinder but those are bad for tapes. The vcr has a laser that slows down the rewind towards the end and reminders can snap tapes.

The one I found was from a college professor that lived nearby and he was the original owner. He barely used it and stored it well. I drove to his house and picked it up. I have a unique problem with my Magnavox VCR that only started a couple of years ago, and I have yet to figure out what's happening, why it's happening, what's caused it, or how to resolve it. Basically, playing SP recordings results in a lot of noise (not tracking) and other distortion in the picture. LP and SLP/EP recordings are completely unaffected by this, it's *only* SP recordings. Any ideas?

My mother still records TV onto VHS tapes but not because she's a weirdo as you seem to think. She's 91 and using a VCR is all she's used to using. Tried years ago to get her a PVR but she couldn't understand how to work it no matter how many times I explained it. She's also never had internet or even a mobile phone.
I'm surprised she can manage with a VCR, being that they have to be used with a converter box now. My mother learned to use a DVR when she was 88 but could never manage a VCR if her life depended on it.
The mechanism looks very similar to my jvc svhs .
I just bought a dvd, VCR combo at a thrift store really really hoping for vcr to work but it didn't. I had to hide it before my 9 year old autistic child who is obsessed with vhs tapes got home from school and be disappointed. I hope I can fix it 🤞Thank you!

First I don't think its the best thing in the world, it is very convenient to record on tape to record tv shows, that's what made them so popular if the first place. and if you don't care about the quality, which most of the time I don't, I simply use it to record shows I'm going to miss while out, and I enjoy fast forwarding through the commercials, my internet sucks here so I don't subscribe to any streaming services, got tired of all the pausing and buffering. So if I can record it myself and play back at my leisure why not. HD or SD from 10 feet away and my eyesight it looks pretty much the same. I don't think that makes me weird. There are much better reasons why I am proudly weird. :-)
Bought an old VCR from a thrift store today. When I put a VHS in, the VCR makes a loud squeaking sound then says error and won’t play the tape. Any advice on how to fix that?

Well…I have a tv combo and those are not as cheap as just a vcr so I think 3d printing is worth it
Doesn't hold up. 3d printed parts are not strong enough. I have tried to fit parts that have been 3d printed and none have lasted. One guy sent me a vcr with 5 printed gears. The first 3 broke before I could get the machine together the 4th held long enough to ship it back then broke as soon as the owner tried to use it.
Im a wierdo trying to use these machines alot, you still get a like from me 😊 Got to start being some money again soon in these machines because i know im not alone liking to watch ex rentals and what not. There no more new machines to buy so you got to use what you find. I know i would pay to have my machines serviced by a professional tech, if i could find one 😭 I live in Sweden so i guess im out of luck (the land of streamers).

No never worked on any. Have no idea about collector value. They never went anywhere here. Never even saw one on any stores.
@12voltvids First did you enjoy your beer? I hope it wasn't a Corona! Anyway regardless if no one records on a VCR these days - I would of still given the erase head a hit anyway! Reason if it's dirty the tape itself would pick it up and possibly contaminate the sound/ control head! Now Is that better than someone saying to 3D print a part?
And the tape guides. Actually the owner just lives up the street and owns one of the eateries in town so i got a gift card for a free meal so everyone is happy. Has some old tapes from a cooking show he did for community tv he wanted to show.
I wonder if the VFD issue is one of those IC protectors that used to fail if you so much as looked at them wrong! Still not as bad as those 'wickmann' round style fuses that Philips used to favour, and would simply disintegrate internally. Such is life..
I didn't investigate as there was no money in it. I got the same, a couple of free pizzas from the local place. He doesn't use it to record and could care less of the clock worked. Probably better off anyway as the click would likely be just blinking 12:00!

@@Oldgamingfart there hasn't been money in electronics repair for 20 years. I got out before the mass exodus.i watched all the shops slowly close their doors. I do it now for the CZcams revenue. I have enough content now that generates a constant income stream. It's not much but it adds up every month. So I can afford to fix things for prices that nobody else could even consider.
@@12voltvids Yes, the writing was definitely on the wall by the early-to-mid-nineties when the price of consumer electronics started to fall quite considerably (thanks to cheap imports, etc), and coupled with the complexities of miniaturisation, brought with it its own challenges. To put it in layman's terms: an absolute ball-ache!
Kudos to those like yourself who were able to evolve through it and change industry, though mostly through necessity I'd imagine. And I have to say this channel is an absolute goldmine of information, and for like-minded an excellent resource. Long may it continue! 👍
@@Oldgamingfart I wouldn't have said early 90s, but certainly by the late 90s and early 2000s. For me i saw the big shift start about 2001 and by 2003 I was out of the repair business. 2002 i saw a big income decline that was not sustainable so i got out. Many others left the business in the following years. I may have stuck around a bit longer but an opportunity came along and i bailed. That and the owner was a difficult man to work for. I will never say anything bad about him other than he was difficult to work for and there was a revolving door in the shop where tech would start and quit within a few weeks because of the owner. AFAIK he is still in the business. His shop closed on 2012 but he started working for another retailer in a neighbouring city that caters to the rich and famous also known as the British properties with their multi million dollar mansions in West Vancouver. He would be on his early 70s by now.

Have you done any repairs on an Emerson tv vcr combo that eats tapes? I'd like to know how to repair it. Since it's a combo unit.
Yes. Rubber idler tire on older units, belts and mode switch. The usual suspects.

The only one part that fails there is that final orange washer, don't reuse it, if it poped, it is weak enough.
It popped because the clutch let go and the spring force was against it.
Could I send you a VHS player to examine and/or repair? Its the same exact type of player you just used in this video. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to press stop and then eject, but the one time I didn't, I instead pressed pause and then eject and some of the tape was stuck in the machine. Thankfully I got the tape out but it wasn't able to replay the VHS without causing the same crinkling problem
You do realize that vcrs are really not worth fixing. By the time shipping is added they are cost prohibitive.
I dont care if its not worth the cost. The vcr tape itself or the player? It's ok if not, I was just trying to stay hopeful and ask someone who knows his stuff
@@bulbakurb2385 here is the problem. I'm in canada. Shipping would be close to 100 each way and repairs could be 100 depending on what's wrong. That 300 to fix an old machine that I see regularly posted on Facebook for 10 to 20.
Its your money I don't mind fixing them but for s VHS it just isn't economical. Svhs yes, betamax yes and 8mm hi8 for sure as these are not as plentiful and people have old media they want to play but a regular VHS no, not worth fixing but if you want it fixed I can probably fix it. Just keep the
Shipping costs in mind. I have more junk around here than I can count from people that thought they wanted to fix something sent it to me and I fixed it and it's still sitting here. Eventually I try to sell to get at least my time and parts covered. Yesterday I sold a 37"tv that was brought in back on January. It needed a hand full of caps. Repair bill was 70 total. Was abandoned. Put it up on Facebook for 50, no takers. Dropped to 40 nothing then 30 nothing then 20 still nothing finally I sold it for 10 bucks. That covered the parts and that was it. This happens all the time.

I have a problem with a JVC HR-S7000
when playing a video tape, the image is clear, when I record from TV, I have horizontal black lines and blink.
I cleaned the recording head.

Probably worn out video heads. What people don't realize is that machines with worn heads will generally play pre-recorded tapes and tapes recorded on other machines for quite a while even though the heads are badly worn. Furthermore if they make a recording on the machine with bad heads that tape will usually play pretty good on another machine but they cannot play self-recorded tapes. The reason this happens is as the head Gap wears the signal it records wiggles around on the track it doesn't record a nice full track with video signal it tends to move as the frequency shifts up and down. So you end up with a signal that is very low compared to a good head. I taped this recorded on a different machine has the full width of the track on the tape and the Warren head is able to read that entire track even though the head is worn and as the head spins it may be picking up different portions of the track because the full width is there it's able to play the image back. Same thing with recording on a bad machine and playing it on a good machine because the full width of the head is available it's able to pick off enough of the signal that you can get a good image off of it but when the worn head attempts to play a recording that it made because the track itself is not the full width as the single that's recorded on the partial track passes in and out of the focal point of the Warren head you get dropouts black lines streaks etc. One of the first things I learned when I took a training course was how to spot bad heads. They always showed up first on machines playing self-recorded tapes. If it's a forehead machine chances are it's the EP heads that have worn quickest because they are a narrower Gap same with the Hi-Fi heads. You start noticing noise, a fluttering sound in the HiFi audio track of self-recorded tapes.
How do you record analog TV? I thought all channels were digital?

What does “eating tape” mean? Does that erase things on the tape and is it something that’s noticeable?
Also if it eats/erases the beginning of the tape, how can it be recovered?
eating tapes means that the loading mechanism, including the belts, pulleys, etc., cause things not to work right when playing, fast-forwarding, and rewinding a tape. the take-up reel doesn't get wound, and doesn't turn, and the supply reel keeps turning. next thing you know, the excess tape ends up getting caught in the mechanism, twisting the tape and ruining whatever footage was recorded on that portion of the tape. JVC VCR's had that dubious distinction of having this happen. you are going to have a fuzzy part of the tape in the area where the tape was eaten when playing it, with dropouts.
Strange loading system on that thing! What is the little wheel at the rear left for? The one you ha to stop to adjust a screw!
That's just a little shock absorber. The idea is like on some of the old reel to reel that had a secondary passive capstan on the supply side that was driven just by the friction of the tape running over it. Helps the tape feed into transport and equalize tension between the center and edge of tape.

i got a VHS-C adapter recently. i have a very nice Mitsubishi S-VHS deck that has never eaten a tape before in my memory, it is currently 2/2 of the VHS-C tapes i have fed through this adapter. i believe the adapter is causing cog slack. any idea how to fix the adapter?
Those adapters were a joke when new and 40 years on haven't gotten any better. I have the attitude that anyone that bought into that joke of a system vhsc deserves what they get. You'll probably need to find another one. I have 4 for transferring tapes 3 are broken. The 4th is just hanging in there. When it breaks I am going to have to use an old camera to play, that is if that stull works when I need it.

At 9:22 you said people that own these machines have them for one reason and one reason only. To play old tapes. That’s not true. I need a vcr to rewind tapes to i don’t mess up the heads on my Panasonic 1980p ag I use to digitize vhs. I need just a rewinder vcr. I hd a rewinder but those are bad for tapes. The vcr has a laser that slows down the rewind towards the end and reminders can snap tapes.
Not all vcrs slow down as they rewind. Scrap the 1980 they are brutal machines.

The one I found was from a college professor that lived nearby and he was the original owner. He barely used it and stored it well. I drove to his house and picked it up. I have a unique problem with my Magnavox VCR that only started a couple of years ago, and I have yet to figure out what's happening, why it's happening, what's caused it, or how to resolve it. Basically, playing SP recordings results in a lot of noise (not tracking) and other distortion in the picture. LP and SLP/EP recordings are completely unaffected by this, it's *only* SP recordings. Any ideas?
Well I'm thinking of starting a video transfer service and will need to know how to fix things like this
