- Hello!
Every now and again there is a breakthrough that happens within one's process. For quite some time, I have been experimenting with acrylics to try and make them look like an oil painting. I think I have finally found a formula that works for me so I thought I would share it with all of you.
So, in this contemporary acrylic portrait I use a combination of realism and abstract elements with a mixture of heavy body acrylics, Golden Open Acrylics and some high flow acrylics.
The background colors:
Warm Gray - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Blue Gray - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Green Gray - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Warm White - Master's Choice (Hobby Lobby)
Burnt Umber - Liquitex Heavy Body
Payne's Gray - Liquitex Basics
Skin Tone Mixes with Golden Open Acrylics
1. Cadmium Red, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
2. Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
3. Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre, Manganese Blue, Titanium White
4. Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
5. Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White
*These are only a few combinations that I use. Play around to find different mixes.

Hello from Canada Celebrating 37 years married today, but I had to sneak a painting video in. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent.
Happy Anniversary Tracy!!!❤❤❤
I love your art! That has been my goal, to make an acrylic painting look like oils. Thank you
Let me tell you, your picture as reference is beautiful. Beautiful bone structure. You don’t look drunk at all 😅Gorgeous portrait you created.

Once again beautiful magnificient art. But More of you please. More of the wonderful loving outstanding zany magnifiicient personality that is YOU YOU
❤❤❤ thank you so much. I learned so much with this video. I've been selling portraits for years, never went to art school but I always learn so much from you. I have also tried to do some somewhat abstract art because I watch you. I can't get into it fully just yet. I start and it comes back to realism smh, but one day I guess I won't be afraid. Thank you for all that you do. This video is sooooo informative, ty for taking the time to teach so much in so much detail. ❤🎨
Wow! Great video as usual…nice to see you again appearing on the screen! The feathers give a spiritual kind of native vibe, I think. Love the result.👍
Amazing painting and thank you so much for breaking down some color theory as well as showing the plane shifts!🎉
So much talent and an awesome human being!
Thank you!!!❤❤❤
Awesome video and info! Thank you!
Amazing artwork! Your explanation of the painting process is super helpful 🫶🏾✨
Hi “We” lol! We are in this together! So much good instruction! The realism focus and abstract explanation is probably the best I’ve heard on why & how. I totally agree!
This painting is Gorgeous and fascinating! I think the model was a huge reason why! Oh, and the artist lady too! 😁👍
Thank you Stephanie! ❤
Really great information, very different, huge help, thank you!
Thank you.
So glad I found this post- I normally do oils and recently thought I would do a stencil project- a triptik of the same portrait with three different backgrounds. I would do them in acrylics and spray paint and stencils. Like an Andy Warhol series. All went well until I thought I would just give some form and volume to the face with some acrylic detail work- even with Slo-blend I can not work fast enough- it is so hard to blend a gradient or have subtle shifts in a tint or a shade. It is a poor carpenter that blames his tools but this has been painfully difficult- I keep trying to get the acrylics to behave like oils. Silly me. Live and learn.
Nice work- I like your aesthetic and style- you are the whole package-smart, articulate, talented and yes beautiful- keep posting I look forward to more...Nelson
Stunning, simply stunning, you never cease to be amazing ma'am, I'm ever in awe of your eye and talent, thanks so much for sharing!❤
Thank you so very much Tim!!!❤
Stunning!!!
That is beautiful. I have moved over from oils( for health reasons) and now use acrylics. I find them so tricky, even the Golden Open ones, I’ll take any tips that are offered, so thank you again.
Thank you! I have been working more with acrylics as well. Mainly to speed up the process, but they can be really tricky especially when you're used to oils.
@@lydiabroderick867 I am determined to master them, so I will keep trying 😊
Beautiful. I like the tip of dulling down the skin tone with opposite color of the wheel.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting your videos for us!!! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the knowledge you're sharing. Thank you!
Excellent piece and tutorial.
This is a fabulous tutorial!!! I’ve been trying to paint my first portrait and struggling badly but this tutorial really helped my in terms of color, approach to brush work, plane shift (this was so helpful) and color choices. Thank you so much! I’m am now 10% as good as you 🤭
Thank you! I'm so glad you found the video helpful!!!❤❤❤

Hello Sunshine! Thanks for the lesson on mixing skin tones... it's something I'm still working on. I loved your reference photo - you've got a great face - it would have looked fabulous if it looked more like you! 🙂 I took notes and I'll do some swatches with my paints to see how it looks. I love watching you paint. As I was watching I was saying to myself that if you were teaching a painting course and I had the money, I'd come! Well... maybe not if it were winter. LOL. Like you'd do a painting course in winter... Have a great week and look forward to your next painting!
Lydia that was an amazing video. I loved the portrait and your tutorial on how to mix skin tones. Thank you for sharing ❤❤❤
So funny, I just did a painting that looks like a cartoon to me. Lol. This was so informative, thanks so much 😊

Running out of words to share my absolutely love for this art ❤. Thanks for the skin tone chart, have you ever thought of doing on-line classes - PLEASE PLEASE! Again love everything you do Lydia! 😊❤
Hi Kelly! Online classes are definitely on the drawing board! Thank you!❤😊
Awesome! I will tell you, thanks to you I am drawing again, grabbed a sketchbook book and got out the graphite about 5 weeks ago. Loving it and thank heavens it is like riding a bike - although took a few weeks to get back into the groove and all of the forgotten stuff. But not near your caliber…
Love!! Thank you enjoy your teaching videos! Your faces are beyond the best I've ever seen! Your an inspiration!
Excellent tutorial thank you!
Stunning portrait, stop knocking the model, she's beautiful ❤
A great lesson on skin tones and the layer process with Acrylics 👏🏻. A great video as always, thanks Lydia 👌🏻🎨💖
I really like the expressions in your portraits. It looks sooo easy, when you paint. Every time you explain portrait with oil I am like...okay I go and by some oil paints...I can do such portraits (sure not 😁). But I am courios and I think I might try it one day.
Definitely try oils! I can give you a list of basic colors and the mediums that I use if you are interested.😊
That was super informative. Thank you! Beautiful picture (as always) ☺️ I have no talent in painting realism so these tips are really helpful for people like me. And thank you for the color help!! Seriously great to know
I'm so glad it was helpful!❤😊
I'm trying to paint more often and more portraits. This is exactly what I was looking for. Well done, and you had a beautiful reference photo to work from.
You get lovely comments on your channel. I give every one a 👍🏼. I mean, why not? I am not an artist! I do not understand how you do what you do. Even when you explain it, I’m thinking you’re a goddess who paints in magical, mystical ways. It’s nice for me to watch magical mystical things. It feels really good to be amazed, to be awestruck. Thank you for making me feel that way. 💜💜💜
Thank you Mara! I am so grateful for you and all of my wonderful supporters. This community means so much to me. ❤

Thank you for sharing this video! Started a portrait “a big one .. maybe too big for me to have success, been working on it for weeks and came the face and messed it all up! I gessoed over it all! Hopefully after watching this video it will help for a second chance🎨💞🤷♀️
I've done that! Faces sometimes deserve a second chance!😁
Love, love your work❤ You are truly talented. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work and making it look so easy, though I know it's not. I look forward to your videos as I have recently tried my hand at painting😊
Thanks so much!!! 😊❤
Very nice lesson on the mechanics of media handling as well as color theory . Great job achieving exactly what you set out to do , namely making an acrylic painting look more translucent and oil like. ❤
Love it, do more paintings with birds
Thank you, I will!😊

Such a great video, I loved it and learned so much. You are such a fabulous and generous teacher! Just this past week I was working on a portrait and getting so frustrated I could not "see" or get the facial colors correct. I thought, "if only someone would make a video to help me understand the the colors". And just like that - thank you amazing artist Lydia!!! ❤
I'm so glad you found it helpful! Thank you!😊❤
this looks so beautiful! I love how it was step by step! This is amazing!
it's beautiful.
This is a beautiful, technical and well presented masterpiece! Well done:)
Thank you very much!😊❤
Video of The This Months.
Fantastic Lydia I love feathers and painting them but do not buy them any more because I found out how they obtain them from the bird is really cruel !!
What a great video!! I’ve never tried a portrait but I’m tempted to try after seeing this…so informative and that spontaneous humor is contagious! Nice work my friend!!
Fantastic
You Always provide great content in art and humor thank you , you ar lovely and your art is exceptional!!!
Thank you!!!😊
Amazing how you can do this ❤❤❤. Yesss please share more details about how you do it with us.. I would truly appreciate any help you can give. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around warm vs cool colors, tones and how it works together. Not that I’ll ever be able to do anything close.. it would be fun to try though. And you never know, once in a blue moon it might turn out a little better than it would without information to help guide it. The Time painting you created a few weeks ago with the hour glass & lady with the crow is 100% mind blowing. I could watch you paint for hours.. & I have on several days 😊 I love it when I see you’ve put a new video on. Thank you so much 🌹🌹🌹☺️
Thank you Debra!!! I'll definitely keep sharing tips and techniques!❤❤❤
Thank you for the skin color combinations and paint colors

Love it!❤️
Beautiful ❤
🥰
❤ You’re great ❤
Thank you!!!❤❤❤
I use both, imoi... I think acrylic is a poor relation to oil. I like acrylic for some application, but I do prefer oil, I know some people get great results with acrylic. I seem to get my most painterly effect with oil..
Just a preference I guess... ❤ ps, beautiful painting ❤❤
Thank you! I prefer oils as well. I like acrylics for abstract effects and oils for everything else... Especially portraits.😊
Beautiful work 👏❤
