Finally, a proper metal vocal coach reacting to and explaining Devin's technique,
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Amen to that. Remember seeing his Kingdom performance at EMG. Also outstanding. He truly has both incredible clean and fantastic fry/screams. And as Kardavox points out. He is so confident in his vocals. Really does everything to some kind of perfection.
Absolutely! I enjoy watching first-time reactions, but there's not much to it.
Right? Someone who actually knows and recognizes Devins insane vocal talent. 🤟🏻😁
@@KardavoxAcademy check out Vai's album that Devin sings on I think Devin was 19 it's called Sex and Religion
"His soft palate is intriguing me right now" - Mark, 2020
"I like that soft palette. Thats a nice soft palette!" - Donkey from Shrek, probably
“A bunch of dudes, drinkin beer, talkin metal”
Yeah. That’s my kind of shit
aint nuthin but a good time
It's so nice to see that I'm not the only one COMPLETELY fucking freaking out, when hearing those fry vocals. Or distorted whatever-that-is.
Loved you before, love you even more now!
Glad ya dig it! Much love back at ya!
Exactly. I react that way to Devin every time I hear him. He's just that good.
I watch most of his interviews . He is 2000% ocd about music and refuses anything but perfection. He has to sound the same live as on his albums . Definitely a man to respect.
that's because he is also bi polar, and he uses his disorder when making his music.
I actually find the two live versions on CZcams 80% better than studio. You can really hear his growth as a singer since the recording of the album.
@@TobikunOuO
I'm pretty sure he said he hasn't had to take medication for his bipolar disorder since he stopped doing drugs in general, so basically after SYL
@@Hellion6325 because he uses his disorder in his music, it is a part of him, there will NEVER be another musician like Devin.
@@TobikunOuO
What? lol are you trying to say Devin is the only musician ever to take inspiration from his mental conditions?
Anyways iirc, Devin said in an interview somewhere he was showing bipolar tendencies because he was abusing recreational drugs, and the drugs made him paranoid as hell. He did apparently stop taking the bipolar medication to "use" his disorder for inspiration, but he hasn't had to take medication for it since he stopped doing drugs.
I don't get what your point is, other than for some reason thinking Devin is somehow the only person ever to be inspired by his mental conditions.
With your experience with Devin, you should do a video comparing him now with the Strapping Young Lad days, and maybe how he has gotten better with the singing 15-20 years later!
not a bad idea!
I was there...and it was beyond words incredible.
Call me a grape cuz I'm jelly
Lucky because this beats Royal Albert Hall performance.
hey i was there too
I am jelly too :P I bought tickets to Metaldays to see him and Jinjer for the first time in July and then this beer virus f**cked everything up....
Oh yes... and Plovdiv was a beautiful city to wander through as well
Oh... my... GOD!! You sounded almost exactly the same as Devin just by imitating the techniques he's using. Masteful and a great proof of knowing what you are talking about.
High praise, that is! Thank you!
We need one on Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth and Bloodbath
Especially since there are acctual isolated vocal tracks on youtube
He was apart of Bloodbath?
That’s dope
Ghost of Perdition
DIVINITY Yeah Mikael is the OG vocalist of Bloodbath man!
And hard agree, he should react to Ghost Of Perdition
That high scream gets me every time! What an absolute spine tingler!
It makes me happy to see a grown man go completely riot hearing a song he loves.
Makes me feel I'm not the only one losing it when hearing my favourite songs
Mark, my man, I love how you go straight to the point with your tips. They're so easy to understand it's hard to belive this content is free haha much love
Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you like the vids!
Totally have to agree, can't believe the amount that's in these videos. Highlight of my day to watch them.
it’s clear how much more you love and are inspired by this type of music than the heavier stuff we normally listen to Lol
I think its just because I was standing and had more room to move. I love, LOVE deathcore, death metal, black metal, all that good stuff. I was also just having an overall rad day which helped :P
Check his reaction to Black Tongue, though. It's really just empathizing with the music because both that song and this song have very strong emotional themes.
Doesn't get any better than that. Love your love for Devin. Appreciate the vibe of this channel.
Thanks for the kind words!
It's 5 am here in India right now, and your extremely contagious enthusiasm and insight have gotten me beaming! :D
Major thanks for doing this video man.
glad you dig it! Thanks so much!
Devin is a personal hero of mine after being a SYL fan as a kid I saw him with DTP not knowing until last minute he was the same vocalist. His wit and humor just blew me away and the actual performance was insane. Devin is so unbelievably talented and committed to music it’s mind blowing. His twangy jingles are as catchy as his breakdowns are just brutal and pure metal. Would love to see you do Traitors! I don’t have a FB but consider it please.
The thing is I'm not even that much into singing or vocals, I can't even play an instrument, I just like metal. But damn your videos are so enjoyable and informative. Everytime you put out a new video I can't be helped to not be excited about it. And because of you I think I have some basics regarding to singing and screaming even though I never intended to learn it or whatever xD
You also made me recognize that there is so much more to music and all its different genres. Thank you :)
Seeing Devin Townsend live is honestly bordering on life altering. Its insane. I saw them with opeth and gojira a couple years back. It was such a mesmerizing concert I was standing up in my seat
Wow! Those Pitched fry screams towards the end are mind blowing! It's diffenatly something I'll attempt to add to the arsenal one day!
So unreal
Ya boy at the end was so disgustingly good. I hope to see more stuff from him.
Love this song. Very cool to see an actual in-depth explanation of Devin's approach. You do great work; thanks!
Thank YOU! Much love!
Im not too sure Devin approaches it in such a schooled and technical way. He has really good control of his voice and knows how to use all dynamics of it.
This is one of the all time greatest rock songs
Thank you so much for this! Finally someone with knowledge about metal reacts and analyze Devin! Everyone has such a hard time to explain.
A BIG Thank You @Kardavox Academy!
You're Welcome! Much Love!
So at your 28:40 section concerning Devin's pitched fry screams, I have a bit of an observation. I'm a self-taught singer and I use Devin Townsend's work to practice different techniques due to his massive variety and talent, and I notice during that section, it sounds like he's splitting time between two distinctly different techniques and blending them together to give the illusion of one sound. During the "you are a sun goddess, oh yeah-hah" section, I definitely hear the pitched fry scream you're describing. However, when he moves on to the next line, "will you save me, babe, babe, babe?" when he hits the highest notes in that sequence on 'you', 'save', and then on the pitch-up on the last 'babe', you can hear him thin out and hit a distinctly clearer tone. From my observation, I think he drops the vocal fry on those notes and switches to distorted head voice that reminds me a ton of the Stevie Tyler "dream on" vocal riff, and then comes back into the fry on those lower notes. That's how I sing it whenever I'm practicing on this song because it's way easier than trying to throw a fry scream up so high it just turns into what I call "vocal static". Give it a listen again with that in mind and try it out yourself. Cheers.
You just gave perhaps the clearest, most thorough, and the most informative vocal examination I've heard on the interweb. Instant sub.
I’m honoured to be from the same small town of Vancouver 🇨🇦as Dev. We go waaay back and I have enjoyed and been thankful to know him from before it all happened and where he’s taken it. God bless you and your family Dev.
27:07 Devin you gotta stop! You gotta stop right now😂
I KNOW MAN THAT PART STILL GIVES ME CHILLS 100 TIMES LATER GOOD GOD YES BLESS DEVIN TOWNSEND.
Came for Devin.
Stayed for the vocal insight and TNG plate on the wall.
YEAH, more devin reactions are always welcome to me! commenting before watching, will report back.
that pitch screamed fry part always gives a similar reaction lmfao
@@ImDzp so so good
Thank you so much for this video! One of the greatest Devin Townsend reactions I've ever seen. I'm so glad to see that you enjoy this song as much as I do!
About the community feature lows are definitely this guy's comfort zone so he can get a pretty big guttural sounding low with a wider mouth
Most definitely. Also thanks for sticking around for that part!
I’m so glad I watched this video!! This is the first time hearing this song and you can hear the emotion behind the lyrics! Love this dude 🤘🔥
Love how in depth this reaction goes. This dude is legit! Thanks for the content
Favourite Townsend song.. so good
I cycle between this song, Kingdom, and Grace. But I love most of his stuff
I'd have to say my favorite song of his is Love? when he was in strapping young lad. He is beyond incredible at his craft
@@KardavoxAcademy I been digin' Evermore and Genesis also.
Love DT, saw him on his acoustic tour and loved every second of it.
So, I didn't do like an hour of searching or what have you, but getting to this video did take a good amount of sifting through, well, a fair amount of muck to be honest, and my conclusion is that this is the best "Vocal Coach watches Devin Townsend" video on youtube. By far.
I have never seen you get so excited in a video, but it’s DEVIN FUCKING TOWNSEND, so I completely understand. I was jumping around in my bedroom right along with you. 🤘🏽
I do have a special love for this song, glad you dig it too!
This is by far one of the best vocal coach reactions to Devin, or in general, that i've seen. Keep it up!
Thanks for the kind words, Bastian, glad you liked it!
You are a great educator, my friend. I mean you really communicate concepts and ideas well, and I think that's a gift few people have or develop. Keep on keeping on 🤘
Need some Opeth on the channel. Mikael Akerfeldt has some beastly growls but also nice cleans
This might have been the most informative reaction vid you have done. Great job!
Super informative content as always, dude! And it was a blast having you join us on the podcast!
Much Love my bois!
You have not made a better video than this. You, sir, just got yourself a subscriber! You taught me to scream like Dickie Allen, but this is next level vocal coaching.
Your passion and love for our art is beautiful! Keep it up!
Great content (as ever), you're fricking gold!
Yeeees! I'm loving your videos. This is the best breakdown I've seen of Devin Townsend's vocals. I took a voice course when I was doing music ed like 10 years ago. So I kind of know some of the words you're using lol, but not much. But I very much enjoyed this.
Enjoyed seeing you geek out over Devin's vocals.
Man, yes, I love that you love Devin (how couldn’t you), he’s my hero. Really enjoy hearing you talk about his vocal technics, of which I had no idea of how he does it, but hey now I do. Brilliant thanks, legend
This is my absolute favourite song. Thank you. This was most enlightening.
Not a singer but just ran into your channel because of this Reaction to Devin. Love your enthusiasm and info. And yes Devin's high screams are so intense and fit the songs so well.
Also agree with others that covering some Opeth would be cool.
One of my favourite songs, never thought I'd see it here =D
Edit now that I've watched it: I feel you on those last screams, this song gives me chills every time.
Did I just actually watch a vocal coach reacting and explaining Devin's incredible voice and technique?? All I usually see is "vocal coaches" watching a Devin Townsend video from beginning to start not knowing what to say because they know they've just been bested at their profession.
Great Video dude!
This was the first song I learned on drums, but it was Devy that drew me in to start.
Hell yea been waiting for another vocal coach video
it's amazing how you share your love for sing with us, for another part, thank you so much for the guide how you enjoy the music.
I like so much Devin!! Great video Obi Wan!!
Greetings from Chile!
Hahaha I haven't gotten the Obi Wan Comparison in a long time! Glad you dig the videos!
Thanks for a detailed study!
Love your style - plz, KEEP IT UP!!!
You are a great singer! A big part of why I love Kardashev!
Thanks for the kind words dude!
The love and passion you put in to what you do will keep me coming back no matter what artist you analyze. Keep it up dude, you're killing it. I really loved doing Devin here, it's good variety for the channel. And he's amazing, so yeah haha.
I'll hop on the Leprous train, but also maybe some unknowns for ya:
Numenorean - Adore (serious, this might be my top song of 2019, there's so much going on and amazing song writing. If you like alcest it's right up there on emotionally honest screams)
I was going to list others but fuck it dude, I honestly just want you to listen to that song. Even if you don't review it I think you'll really love it based on things you've said. \m/
Geeze the drums are mixed so bloody brutally in the mix. Heavy AF. 👌👌
Awesome video man, loved it!
Slaugther To Perveil - Agony
Masterpiece
I'm sure they'll make another appearance on the channel down the road!
@@KardavoxAcademy Mark, you predicted the future
Wow dude just discovered your channel and ou're so insightful it's really interesting!
I was ready to see another basicreaction video but you're even more interesting to listen to than those other "vocal coaches" who are also doing reaction videos :p
Hell yeah, glad it was useful for you!
Not sure if anyone’s requested or mentioned it, but I think Uada’s Cult of a Dying Sun would be a great song to analyze! Love your analysis here, reminds me to listen to more Devin too!
I reckon you should analyze some Ihsahn. His screams are very unusual and interesting.
Him and Leprous
This song gives me serious goosebumps especially towards the end of the song.
Wow Mark, It is a huge undertaking doing a Devin Townshend song and you nailed it.
Probably the fastest sub for me, 30 sec in. Your channel is going to grow very fast.
I've heard deadhead so many times now over the past few years and still 26:50 blows my mind, hits me like no other song can. To me it's still the most incredible vocals around, especially his live versions of it.
This is a song i've been really waiting for on this channel! so great to see it's finally here :D
I'd highly recommend some Opeth - Ghost of perdition! Mikael is a beast of a vocalist
The album track is already pretty fucking impressive but this is... dang. What a performance
This song gives me chills. Incredible.
It's a classic!
Oh WOW!!!! Haven't heard this with a choir and orchestral backing...😱😱😱😱😱 OMG 😳😳😳 even more amazing!!!!!
Also, about time!
Your videos are very interesting and I love how u explain everything in details, from clean vocals to growls! Will u analyze Tatiana Shmailyuk voice in the future? That would be very helpful
Reaction videos to Devin are my new favourite thing. The man is just perfection. I've done vocals on a friends cover of his song Supercrush, but tbh I'm better off retiring 😂
Looool, I react the same way every time I watch this.
I'm learning to scream just watching his facial expressions.
I never feel pain in my vocal folds, so i guess I'm learning it right.
It sounds to me like you gotta get a meet and greet ticket cuz you, sir, were geeking.
two people can pull off those screams at the end. Devin and LZZY HALE!
Plovdiv was the first time that me and my friends saw Devin live, it was an extraordinary experience is all I can say. Devy is on a different level.
I bet it was unreal
@@KardavoxAcademy Oh man it really was. The whole gig was a masterpiece and it is etched in my mind forever. I think that playing the entirety of Ocean Machine was just too blissful :)
Devy in SYL and Devy now are 2 different people. He has grown so much
I am so glad you done Devi. The musical genius!! Also didnt realise how great a singing voice you had. (We all know how great your growl/gutterals are)
Edit: you have a new subscriber with me :)
Higher - same show…it’s freaking amazing
when i bought the Stevie Vai record Sex and Religion in the 90s i heard him for the first time, and i was like, omg, what the fuck is this voice. My favorit is the end of In my dreams with you, when he screams, it still give me chills. Newer heard a voice like this ever in my life.
Devin is probably one of THE most talented musicians of the 21st century. Everything he does is phenomenal.
Came for Devin and stayed because of the Mjollner, that little thing right there is a beauty
I'm just here to watch all the reaction videos of Devin. The one at the RAH is phenomenal!!!!!!
He’s such an unbelievably talented vocalist... and guitarist... and composer... and just an unbelievably decent human being... and freaking hilarious. I am such a massive fan of his
Tell us how you really feel, Ryan! ;)
Been watching your videos for awhile now and even though i'm not vocalist just metal fan I enjoy them a lot. (And they make me appreciate my favourite vocalists even more!) Just saw you Shadow of intent reaction and I've been a fan of them since 2017 I just wanted to say that amazing Heretic prevails breakdown has studio recording video where you can see (from side pov) what Ben exactly does there. Should check it out even though it is just that one take he used to record it (yep, one take) and you mentioned few times Ben's posture and there is great live video of them from Chain Reaction and you can see Ben usually just bends his knees to go low and keeps his torso upright. Just wanted to share these! Cheers!
Devin Townsend is god damn genious!
Something really interesting about seeing a conductor going along with the chaos that is metal music. Kinda makes me want to see some poly-rhythm with an orchestra to see a conductor trying to keep up.
Plovdiv is in Bulgaria, my home country. I'm an absolute fan of the city and if you ever come by to the balkan states it's a thing to check definitely. Keep the good work \m/
Been watching your videos for a while, and just today Kardashev came up in my Spotify discover weekly playlist :) Makes me want to learn how to scream.
Keep up the great content sir! Would love to see some D&D game-play sometime! :D
Now There's a fun idea!
10 minute videos be damned. thank you for this
@10:50 sounds like he either raised his soft palate or lowered his larynx or a combination of both for that intentional low note (the one that fell back in his throat). He’s definitely had some classical operatic vocal training before.
He's never had vocal training
Hey, hey, hey... get away from my car! --- lol best vocal example.
Just found you because of this video, super informative and I loved it! Devin really blew my mind when he does the scream at the end of "Thing Beyond Things" in Plovdiv, live, 20 years after recording it on the album. THAT was the one that shook me - Curious to know your thoughts?
*"Aaargh! This song gives me chills!!"*
I say that about pretty much every single Devin Townsend song. That man is a musical genius. A living legend even. #DevinIsGawd 🤟🏻😁
And Holy fuck. Props to Elijah from that fan clip at the end. Dudes got some pipes. 😳
Everyone thinks they gangsta until Dev hits a high note.
Me: *Sees kardavox academy video* oeh nice more learning.
Mark: it's a kinda ambience song you might wanna grab a beer.
Me: oh okay aight sure.
....
Me: *sees that it's 40 minutes long* OKAY DAMN LEMME GET A SECOND AND A THIRD BEER YO.
hahaha hell yeah!
