- "You are the salt of the earth..." Huh?
QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS: What’s one way you enjoy being useful?
HERE'S HOW:
Today, ask someone in your life this question:
How can I help you today?
Then try your best to accomplish what they request of you.
(You might also ask God, in prayer, the same question...)

QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS:
What’s one way you enjoy being useful?
Simply to ALWAYS be available.
I’ve come to love many of the residents in my mom’s care facility and enjoy visiting with them too. Sometimes they need help with their cell phones or other electronics.
By giving …fill in the blank.
Networking to assist others. Had an opportunity as recently as yesterday. Tremendous HIGH.
Helping to look after my grandkids - pure joy (and exhaustion 😂)
Living in assisted living , learning each person’s name and speaking directly to them, showing and speaking my appreciation to all the nurses and physical therapists, praying for God to help me see and respond to those places in my little world where salt is needed 🙏❤️
Beautiful response
You have already "salted" my day with your example. What delicious "salt" you are!
Wow... how can we be helpful? I think the first step may be to help ourselves by slowing down. Then, take a look around. Lots of folks need help. In the chance meetings of our daily lives, we probably cannot help others by fixing their problems. However, showing someone a real measure of human kindness can help someone else. Holding the door for someone... with a smile... or gesturing for someone to move ahead in the check-out line... again, with a smile... might make a difference to someone struggling just to get through the day. And let's not forget to hold the door for our own loved ones.
I’ve been basking under the teachings of John and Dallas for perhaps a year. As I sell my house five years post my husband’s passing, it’s now time to downsize. The most apparent thing is for me to give every single thing away. All of it except my clothes, Bible and photos.
There is pretty much no way I could have come to this act of faith without being steeped in the daily Word and wisdom of John and Dallas. It’s a relief and a joy to imagine.
🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
Saying "Hello" and greeting people. Those acts of kindness can brighten another person's day.
Helping a person without a car to get places like shopping and dr appts.
good morning ☀️! just be present with others…start small it’s the little things, even a smile 🙏🏻💕🍃
I find not thinking of myself first makes all the difference in being useful. No matter how I’m feeling, if I stop thinking about myself and think of others first, my mindset becomes more positive and becomes less concerned about worries and anxiety.
Yes!
I have never wanted to feel "salty" until today. Thank you.
I love all the comments. My saltiness is serving communion to a 93 year old homebound. It ends up being uplifting for both of us.
I enjoy reading at our local senior facility. The residents always make me smile and I am hopeful I can bring some joy to their day. Sometimes I bring my tripaw beagle with me, they love the little fella.
I often wish i was more practically minded, and am working at being more generous, but i feel most useful when I'm listening to someone going through something, whether I know them or not. I love the thought of the eternal in an ordinary moment, that there's a sacred purpose to that.
Oh Lord how can I be helpful? Help me to remember I’m the salt of the earth. Amen
I’ve found that just telling someone in a sincere way that you “appreciate them” especially those who serve you in some way lightens their day and increases their joy.
I love this! This is what we’re all about. “We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing one another.” - Luciano De Crescenzo
I enjoy sending a card in the mail with encouraging words. And sometimes they will say, it really helped to read that. And I will marvel at how God works.
love that Joann
Thank you John! I served and worked for 17 years at a church in youth, children’s, women’s, baptism, worship, abuse ministries. I always felt like I was salt during that time. Left church, still healing. Thank you John for the reminder of being salt and for your daily messages that have help me each day! God help me to see myself as salt again.
I loved going to my in-laws on Sunday mornings and cooking them breakfast while my husband walked the dog. Then after breakfast I would clean up while he helped his stepfather with his oxygen. I miss my in-laws dearly. They have been gone over 5 years.
I like to offer practical help when I am able, for example offering to babysit for our neighbours who have a small child.
Great reminder of why we are here. To serve one another.
Speaking love, saying words of comfort, saying words that acknowledge the need, pain, promise of hearing their heart 😍
What a great way to start my day, Thank You for another great message today. May you and your team be blessed today.
Making it a golden rule day!🥰🙏🙌⭐️
This is so well said, the story(s) within illustrate this in a heart-affecting way that causes me to think and remember - no matter what I can always be helpful.
Thank you such a great truth. Turning our focus outward to help others
I’m not a leader, I have always been a helper, It’s in my DNA. Helping my family has been my role and now I’m privileged to be of help to my sister as she is on her cancer journey. God made me a helper and I’m okay with that ❤
Bless you as you help your sister. My big sister did the same for me years ago ... she was with me every step of the way while I underwent chemo. She does not realise what an absolute blessing she was (& is) to me .... she was SALT at a very difficult time. Bless you as you encourage & be SALT your sister❤
You are very kind. Thank you! I’m glad your journey had a happy ending ❤
Thank you for these delightful teachings - may our Father bless you abundantly, all of your team who are making these available to us😊
Wow!! Wonderful challenge! and another book I'd like to read. I'm so grateful for John's unending wisdom and sharing of resources!
I enjoy being useful when I really slow down and am fully present with whoever I am with - young, old, happy, sad, difficult or easy....look them in the eyes and listen... and be praying and listening on the inside as well. I feel really alive in the kingdom in those moments. Alive to God, my neighbor, and myself. So thankful for those moments. 🎉❤ Thanks John, Tim and co!
I love helping people connect people with other people.
Yes. Me too.
Thank you for encouraging me to be salt today.
Wow - such a great message! So hard to fade into the background, but so biblical.
Thank you, John.
I loved this! It really spoke to me and I am grateful for this verse as well as the words John Spoke today. God Bless!!
Good word
Thank you for the amazing story! We have countless opportunities to be mini Christs to others throughout the day, if we will only turn our hearts outward.
Great teaching and story! I made an early morning vet appointment due to a concern. I’ll be praying and looking for ways I can help them as I wait for the appointment and when I get there.
Wow, what a powerful devo! Thank you team. I try to be useful by really listening to people without judgment. I try to understand others' experience as much as possible before offering any suggestion or advice. It's so hard to listen carefully before speaking.
Great answer
Wow! I’ve always focused on how the thoughts of Jesus apply directly to me here instead of this added thought the hearers considered their influence and station so lowly.
My pastor at GCUMC often uses John and Dallas Willard in his messages. It was where I first discovered both.
By volunteering at my church and at the school where I taught for a number of years!
I can be helpful just by making a comment here! And by texting little encouraging comments to friends.
Thank you! Love it.
If someone sat at my table and asked, “what is this amazing salt?” I would answer that it is Maldon sea salt crystals. All salt is salty, but some is crunchy and dissolvey too. 😋
I agree, salt type matters!
Great message this morning! Most of the time I’m so concerned with what I need that I don’t concern myself with what others need. And when I’m concerned with the needs of others my concern becomes is it ego or codependency? I do get to practice this in recovery groups. Step 12 Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Great call out. Same here
Amen. I try to look for ways to show the fruit of thr Spirit in how I interact with people.
❤
Otra dimensión otra esfera
Quirky question. Jesus hated GARLIC? Hmmm how do we know?
Glad you asked! John is making a joke about his own heritage (Swedish), playing on the idea that we all tend to associate Jesus with our own heritage, context, and preferences.
