- Today the Professional Musicians React crew listens to one of the greats, Dreams by @fleetwoodmac. At the time that Stevie Nicks wrote this song, Mick Fleetwood was going through a divorce, Christine McVie and John McVie were separating, and Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had just ended an eight-year relationship. Can you imagine singing this heart wrenching song NEXT TO the person you just broke up with?
I'm @Jackconte the CEO of @Patreon and one-half of the bands @ScaryPockets and @Pomplamoose.

12:05 "Was she in a relationship with someone in the band?"
Hoo boy, here we go.
I thought "CEO of Patreon" was a joke. Guy is crushing it all over the place. My favorite breakup song is "Lover, you should've come over" by Jeff Buckley. Love to see you guys do that. Hell of a song to dissect. Anything by Jeff. All-time great voice and grossly underrated guitar player.
Your name cracks me 🤭
1st time I noticed him say that I had to look it up. This dude I've been watching vids of for years is the CEO of Patreon?!
Great song suggestion, have shed many tears listening to this Jeff Buckley classic, so powerful
I was just as surprised but the other way when I first found pockets and pomplaImoose. I already new of Jack as the CEO of Patreon and was like, heh, that crazy keyboardist looks a lot like Jack Conte of Patreon. Wait...
@@hamsandwichson He's in the $$$$$$$$$$
As a foreign music student I sadly never really got an opportunity to hear anyone express their opinion on a music piece as articulated as you do - especially on a popular music piece. I know that’s a shame for musicians and music life in my country in general and I hate the fact that the critics here always just know how to criticize but rarely praise artworks or performances in such detail. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to learn from you so I can become a better listener and create more structured opinions.
I love these breakdowns, too! Rick Beato has a great series of videos here on youtube called "what makes this song great" which you might really enjoy, and Adam Neely often does really good breakdowns, too.
Man… this episode could’ve been 2 hours long.
The percussions are such a subtle but essential element for the drive of the groove.
And the way the bass matches the phrasing when Stevie sings “wrap around your dreams” in the second verse is pure genius.
Still loved all your insights =)
Yes! I was not ready for the episode to end and probably wouldn’t be ever. This song is one of the greats.
Rumors is such a well produced album. A lot of classic albums from that era don't actually sound that great. They might have great songs, great arrangements, and a great vibe. But they don't have the pristine quality you hear in modern production. However, this sounds absolutely crystal clear.
It's also hard to believe how tight the rhythm section is given that this is before quantizing.
How many other bands can you think of named after the drummer and the bassist? That's right, none, because that's how good Fleetwood and McVee were
The hi-hat is looped. So essentially it's quantized, or at least click-tracked.
Steely Dan.
@@viktormuerte are you suggesting Steely Dan were named after their bass player and drummer? They didnt even have a consistent drummer, and their guitarist played the bass in the studio and hired someone for gigs
@@e.j.leonard2379 I was suggesting their albums were some of the most well respected recorded during the 70s. It's in response to the op not your comment.
You guys should listen to anything by parliament/funkadelic. George Clinton put together an absolute powerhouse of musicians that defined the era of funk. Mothership Connection by parliament the bridge Swing Down Sweet Chariot are just chefs is life altering every time I hear it.
That bass line….I mean c’mon it’s iconic! When I hear this song I always picture something in perpetual motion…maybe that’s why that skateboard video did so well last year.
I genuinely love hearing each and every one of your insights into these songs. To hear someone articulate exactly what they appreciate about a song is a beautiful thing. I appreciate this series very much and selfishly would love to hear a longer form podcast version of this. Cheers!
You talk about breaking patterns, my favourite bit is always when John McVie breaks that steady rhythm briefly during the second verse. Perfection!
The Corrs an Irish group did a cover of this song, but I love Fleetwood Mac. So amazing to see them live in London. So glad I got to.
this song immediately recalls driving home with my best friend and trying to figure out stevie’s harmonies. it’s such an intrinsically emotional and magical song and it certainly had a part in forming me.
Yes! Great insight that they "chose to stay in the tension". Both musically as in not resolving to some sort of tonic and emotionally, as in they chose to stay together recording records and touring despite a horrible break up. Love this song.
I think “the band didn’t like it” is a bit of an overstatement😅 They didn’t like the initial idea because it was just Fmaj7 to G over and over again, but Lindsey was an amazing arranger and made it have pretty interesting progression, which they ended up really liking - Also, the bass is definitely not the only instrument going to G. Christine’s Rhodes follows the bass and the acoustic does play Fmaj7 to G. I’ve thought that I would say the song is in F Lydian, since F is the 4 of C
That's right. F Lydian is in the scale of C. so no Modulation needed. It's just a IV-V progression over&over.
Where is your CZcams channel?
This man musics
I mean… the band wasn’t into it because it was a blatant smack in Lindsey’s face… which he desperately deserved… but ultimately they made it happen because… it’s a great song.
I'm ded
I’d love to hear you guys talk about Tears for Fears’ Everybody Wants to Rule the World
The connection of Stevie's soft voice dripping with sad regret and probably the most powerful heartbreak lyrics ever written by a woman is just plain irresistable. We are privileged to be allowed this glimpse into the heart and genius of a great songwriter/vocalist.
Lindsey Buckingham was the guy she sang about and with. Lindsey and Stevie lived together and went through really hard times together before they joined Fleetwood Mac. Take a listen to the Buckingham/Nicks album, itself a minor masterpiece. The solo on "Frozen Love" was the key. Mick Fleetwood heard Lindsey doing work on it in a studio they were both recording at. He loved that solo and asked Lindsey to join with them. Lindsey said he would only do it if he could bring in Stevie as well. Stevie and Christine hit it off immediately upon meeting and the rest was rock history.
That's why I love polyrhythms. It throws you out of the normal expected pattern.
Yes to the singers nerding out 💚
Another guess in the digital vs tape discussion: because the almost not existing editing process and budgets the players had really perform their parts. That alone would bring more life into a piece?
I would love to see the Pros take a deep dive into Tool's time signature shenanigans. Pneuma is a bit long for a reaction video, but Danny Carey's performance on that is something else.
when you talked about why people like tape more digital, i literary got goosebumps.
I Love the Drums hiting on the upbeat when the chorus comes In at the “Thunder” part. Genious!
EMF "Unbelievable". That song is SUCH breakup badassery.
I'm one of those non-musicians who knows zero theory but loves music, and your channel really helps me understand why I like what I like. You do a great job of bridging that gap!
This song and this album have a really important spot in my childhood.
That is such a fascinating insight on the difference between tape and digital. I never would have thought of it but it makes so much sense!
I had no idea who Fleetwood Mac were until I heard The Corrs' cover of Dreams. That's the best one IMO.
Prince - Dorothy Parker
This is such an awesome venue with professionals pointing out the particulars of a tune that gives it the unique sound... things non-musicians are unlikely to spot. I SO appreciate this. Thanks
I'd love to see you cover The The's Uncertain Smile, one of the best piano solos ever!
Or really any of The The's tunes.
I know that you record multiple at a time so it's difficult to do every episode, but please keep doing the segment "What are you listening to right now?" Found lots of cool music that way!
My mother wore this album out. I am 54 and still not tired of the genius and heart of Rumors.
I really recommend a song from Mac Miller’s circle albums, over these past couple of months I’ve really dug into his latest album and it’s amazing, the song Good News is something I would love to see you all break down possibly
I have a device for guitar called an E-Bow, which is basically an electromagnet that vibrates the strings of the guitar to make a continuous drone sound (akin to a violin/cello). It has been used in songs like Champagne Supernova by Oasis, so I don’t think it’s too unlikely that it could’ve been used to achieve the effect used in Dreams; it does have a very similar sound...
Love this song and the show!
That’s super interesting actually! Would it have been around in the late 70s?
I always thought he used an ebow on this. It may even be mentioned in the album liner notes.
@@yuvalh4519 It was introduced in 1976 at a trade show in Anaheim, exactly the year this album was recorded in LA. So theoretically it could have been used. Still I rather doubt it. More likely the volume knob or a pedal.
I feel like I’m right there with you guys geeking out about this legendary song. Loved this episode!
The guitar lick after the first sentence sounds like a responsive sigh to the statement made by Stevie.
8:02 It's the SPONTANEITY of the thing! :D
I would love to hear a group of people as good at talking about songs as you folks talk about my songs and recordings, it feels like it'd be an invaluable experience
These are so good and there's more than I can keep up with and they're free (I am a Patreon Patron) and I am totally smitten with Ms. Deandrea!
I totally agree with Jack's tape rap. In addition to which they only had 4 tracks and once they bounced to free up tracks, it is committed. As a result, a take was more final, which gives the performance a live feel. We all know that live music is the best even and sometimes especially when they fuck up.
Dude your take on why people might actually prefer tape to digital has blown my mind.
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels!
Would like you to look at Billy Joel, either Angry Young Man (especially that intro), or Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.
The Corrs version of Dreams is great 😁
Love the way you dive into the meaning of the lyrics. Can you please look at Billy Strings "Away From the Mire"? I've heard you talk about a well orchestrated song. This song travels time from the present moment. He is only beginning to receive the credit he deserves as a singer songwriter. I love your work and you have somehow taught me to appreciate music more then I did last week....keep up the great work and stop making me cry!
I remember when I 1st heard this in high-school I kid you not I listened to this on repeat for the longest time.
“Was she in a relationship with someone in the band?”
Yeah……… yeah, you could say that. 😜
Is anyone on here talking about the cymbal crash after "thunder". Genius!
still my fave drum fill of all time, that thunder crash is just brilliant. simple, but oh so deadly. Mick has got to be one of the most underrated drummers of all time.
I had this 8 track when it 1st came out. It rarely gets better than this.
The song has this slightly murky and slightly blurred edge to it, and has this exhausted but tense feel too. It reminds me a bit of Neil Young song On the Beach.
Yes, yes, yes but have you heard Angie Stone's I WISH I DIDN'T WANT ANYMORE. The sampling of BACK STABBERS by the OJs throughout is fantastic.
BTW, you guys are awesome at breaking down songs!
Correction: It should be I WISH I DIDNT _MISS_ YOU ANYMORE sorry
I find it so amazing that week after week you guys knock it out of the park. I really hope you guys do a breakdown of "The Weight" by The Band at some point. Thank you Ryan for answering the guitar question and for the Patron who asked it. Keep being awesome guys.
7:52 great point!
I think al green has the best break up songs for the good time , raining in my heart cover by him, how can you mend a broken heart just to name a few but I do love Fleetwood Mac
Sara Evans did a nice countryfied "Dreams" but the best cover is by The Kills off of the "Just Tell Me You Want Me" Mac tribute album. Alison Mosshart really gives "Dreams" a terrific reinterpretation. The pain of the lyrics comes through much more clearly in The Kills version.
Thats the thing! Playin' on youre feet but from the Heart!!
I feel like Joe Hisaishi does that- hints at modulation between relative min/maj without actually playing the cords haha so masterful
It's a shame Nick Campbell wasn't there as I think McVie's bass really drives this song but Nick's vocal performance and writing on dreams is rightfully demanding of detailed analysis.
just found your show, and i'm fucking digging it guys
Just since lockdown, this song has probably become one of my favorites of all time. At the end of the workday, I feel like my brain has been sucked through a straw…and putting on this song is the perfect way to relax. Watching your review was totally entertaining…particularly the singers’ comments about Stevie’s voice!
you are crazy people !! you analyze details like nobody else, I love it... I spend the whole video smiling stupidly
So glad my question made it into the edit. And yes it was an alley oop for you to promote the funky scary pockets cover 🤣
Thanks for the layup Daz! And thank you for being a valued member of the community!!! :)
I've never noticed how precise the drummer is. I would have thought he was a drum machine if I didn't know any better. Maybe he's secretly a robot like Havve Hogan of TWRP, lol. 😂
It's both subtle but very sonically forward. Mick is a machine, even though he was experimenting with many chemicals at the time.
I'm pretty sure the main groove of this track is actually him playing but it's looped, with fills and percussion added on top of it. So not a drum machine, but as precise and locked in as one, but with a human groove.
Mick has been described as a human metronome.
@@gregbedford9706 true, and he is, although the main rhythm of this track is just an eight bar loop of his playing
I was thinking he probably didn’t wanna record the song cuz there’s not much for him to do.
I originally heard this song from the Corrs. Didn't know it was a cover until now!
One of my all time faves is "in your eyes" by Peter Gabriel, my all time fave artist. I saw a documentary on the making of the album SO and the detail of the recording and production was fascinating. I'm also a lyricist and Gabriel was a big influence on me. I truly love your dissection of great songs. Keep up the great work.
I've seen quite a few people analyse Dreams as being in F Lydian (rather than Am or C) which does explain the F, F/G vamp, and why they never go to the C and only the Am once and only briefly.
Since you like creative production choices a la removing the chorus the 3rd time around, check out Paula Cole's "I Believe In Love". Sung from first person and doubled by the piano at the chorus, there's A bar duetted in harmony at the bridge/breakdown that underlines the lyrics...absolutely brilliant (and charming).
Before the chorus, I was impressed with the fantastic in the pocket groove of the bass and drums that just drives along and sets it all up... all of those spaced phrases (fills).
Ryan is introduced - Immediate descending parallel tritones.
Power move.
I really enjoy this channel. I’m so glad I’ve found you!!
What an amazing episode! I learn so much with each installment. Keep up the great work!
OMG I absolutely love what you guys are doing here! I love listing along with you guys. Very intuitive and interactive! Thanks you you all rock!
This was soo good! Such a great tune. I didn't realize they cut out the background vocals on that end section. I loved Dianne Reeves's version of "Dreams"
You said they are pedeling on F and F is the 4th of C Major so thats why you get that C Major vibe (learning music theroy from Rick Beato lol). Keep up the awsome work.
I have recommended your new and outstanding channel to everyone I’ve talked to in the last week. Just great! Please keep the content coming ❤️
Great breakdown. Love Fleetwood Mac. This song is legendary. Lissie's (Lissie Music) piano cover of Dreams is worth checking out if you haven't heard it
I don't think there's anything to add or take away from the Fleetwood Mac version of the song, so a cover is superfluous.
Love Danielle in this, keep them coming!
He’s not playing slide. He’s using a volume pedal to swell into the notes (you can see him rocking it in live performances) and he’s also bending up into the next notes rather than hammering on. Both of them together make it sound fluid and “slippery”
I love that you play the whole song in the beginning! I always feel a bit left behind by analysis videos like these, but when it's framed like this I can follow the whole conversation :)
Loving this channel and such a great choice for this video 👏👏👏 The drumming on this track is simple but the way Mick Fleetwood phrases to reflect the lyrics (like the cymbal on thun-DER) is genius. Just to say all of the musicians in each video are amazing & I'm learning so much about what makes a great record. Love how you go super in-depth and nerd out on tiny details, but you do it in a way that's accessible (but not patronising). Would be amazing to hear you react to Sweet Dreams (are made of this) by Eurythmics. Watched the September video about 10 times its so joyous!! Love from England x
So confident, so emotional, so imperfect but yet captures the feeling perfectly, like a musical time capsule ❤️🎼
love your vids, thank u guy, amazing
I recently made one of my MOST favorite memories to this song. Transports me to a giggle and a smile everytime I hear it! I was thinking of how happy it makes me, and the JoY it brings (literally saying joy!) at the exACT moment YOU said the word JOY!!! (11:34!)
Thanks for this! LOVE how excited u get about actually HEARing it all (been this way with music my whole life! 🤗) TOtally dig your vibe... Keep it comin', love ✌🧡
Would love a part 2 reacting to Silver Springs!!
I also read that she wrote this song while she was hanging out at the apartment of Sly Stone. The band were not exactly getting along at the time either. What an amazing story. Keep these going guys, it's my favorite part of my week 😁🥁🎸🎹🎶🎧🎤
I've been loving everything that you guys have been putting out! These have been super fun to watch thus far.
Any chance you'll dive into Boston's self-titled album? Or maybe a Snarky Puppy tune from 'We Like It Here'? Maybe even a crossover episode with Adam Neely??
This was an amazing reaction/analysis!
I feel the same with my music. I force myself to make things within an hour or two. Put all the emotions in it at that moment. I don't like coming back to my music unless it's to master.
Yall must have had that kids version on your homepage last week also.
How come no one ever talks about the drum fills? So chill, so original, so basic, so 70s.
Thanks again for allowing me to feel like a geeky musician, which I am not. Always look forward to these videos.
Had you asked if this was the "prettiest"break up song ever I would have to agree. However, IMHO David Bromberg's "Will Not Be Your Fool (Live)", specifically the version on the Long Playing album, "How Late'll Ya Play Till". It got me thru a crappy divorce, circa 1977... LOL
The Corrs version is great too!
This group is working. This is one of the best episodes because everyone brings something to the table.
I would LOVE to see a discussion on Dave Matthews Band! Satellite specifically, but any of it is worth diving into.
Another amazing video, thanks! Have you done Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah? I would love to hear the takes on the vocal in particular, as to me, it's incredible.
Would love to see you cover Van Morrison’s ‘Moondance’ or ‘Into the Mystic’.
Bravo! Bravo! Another beautifully fun episode 😁
In line with the song-theme of this episode, please consider something by Dire Straits e.g. Latest Trick / Private Investigations / Romeo & Juliet. Dire Straits' musical storytelling is so emotionally powerful.
p.s. the scary pockets cover of this song is for sure the bestest cover.
I really love this show. Thanks guys!
Also I think you guys should react to St. Vincent. I feel like she’s a musicians musician.
Thank you, guys! Love Fleetwood Mac.
If you want surprises in music I encourage you to listen to Dirty Loops. Lots of awesome chords, modulation, pleasant surprises in their
Work Sh-t Out.
They manage to appeal to both musicians and a general audience.
Thanks again. Love this channel.
Cheers!
