How Tom Waits gets THE BEST musicians to sound like AMATEURS
Joe Gore takes Jack and Ryan through the process of recording guitar for Tom Waits' "Goin' Out West" on his album, Bone Machine. They get into the nuances of gear, Waits' sense of humor, how he elicits great performances, mixing, Tchad Blake, and how Joe's approach to harmony is influenced by his love of medieval music.

This is a phenomenal breakdown. I had no idea Knopfler was into bluegrass. I grew up around bluegrass as my folks had a band and even cut a couple albums. I love the music and have had kids and workmates make fun of me, but they don't understand how closely related it is to some of the best rock out there. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers also loved bluegrass and classic country. I think they had some collaborations with Herb Pederson or someone like that. They were also huge Byrds fans and the Byrds had loads of bluegrass connections from Jim McGuinn to Chris Hillman to Gram Parsons to Clarence White.

[12:12 - 12:24] This is exactly what drew me to Kendrick from the first moment. When I first came into contact with his music, I immediately thought "This guy is an artist. He breathes art and it seems to me that the reason for his life is to translate his human experience and create works that change people's lives." His mind doesn't stop, his attention to detail is dazzling, but not only in a purely musical analysis, to call it that, but he is quite a perfectionist when it comes to the semiotics of things, how everything interacts with each other. How the rhythm, the melody and melodic motifs, the ambience and harmonic rhythm and the lyrics fit together in such an effective way of conveying messages and emotions... You can extend this to albums, as they have this book-like aspect where each song is a chapter in a larger story and it's a completely different experience to hear a loose song versus a song in the context of the album. Sometimes I miss musicians analyzing the entirety of the work and how the dialogue between the musical elements and the poetic/literary elements makes up a beautiful thing. Music is art and we have to treat it as such! I didn't know about this channel but I have the feeling I'm going to binge it Isso é exatamente o que me atraiu no Kendrick desde o primeiro momento.

I'm no kind of gear nerd, but I heard the tone (as well as what is mentioned here) came about quite by accident.. They finished recording one day, left the studio.. In the night, a raised Mic fell on the floor.. Then they came in next day and recorded, and they heard this other-worldly kind of compression, which blew everyone away.. When they realised what had happened, they left the MIc on the floor and kept the "magic part".. 😉

I always loved that intro, and to me, the song carries an intensity that justifies it. The intro, to me, brought to mind a big factory machine. I imagined this guy turning on the lights, all the subsystems, culminating in a giant electric motor spinning up, followed immediately by the main riff, representing the big parts finally moving. Thematically, it went well with the working class lyrics and the mention of various machines.

I wish more people would think like Tim Pierce. He can play as fast as all the famous shredders but instead of showing everyone how well he can play, he left his ego aside and chose to play a simple melody because he felt that that's what the song needed. Years ago, we were looking for a lead guitar player for our band and we found a guy who could play very well. I didn't want to act like the _"boss of the band",_ so I let him come up with his own parts and solos...but every time I wouldn't show him what to play, he would come up with these parts where he played a million notes/second, not just here and there but *_all_* the time! It was just too much, so I asked him a few times, as delicately as I could if he could play something more simple, like a melody that someone would remember and could *_sing_* along. He ended up quitting and sent me a message, saying that he wasn't the right guy for us, that what we need is a "boring" guitar player. Like I said, I wish more people would think like Tim Pierce...

Victor Wooten is *the* innovator for efficient bass. The double thumb is a good example - the complex notes with a percussive elements don't match his relaxed hand movements which seem to barely move. He said in an interview (for his slap bass VHS tape about 25 years ago) that he wasn't ready to play a 5 string, there was more to explore with his 4 string.
