- Piano riffs and solos are my favorite thing in the world, but I'm biased. In today's episode I talk with @larrygoldings and the rest of the @DeadWaxShow crew about the top 5 keyboard riffs of all time. This one is a banger!
I'm @Jack Conte the CEO of @Patreon and one-half of the bands @Scary Pockets and @PomplamooseMusic .

If these were 45 minutes long, I would be equally captivated for the entire duration.
Easily!!!
YES!
I could have used 45 minutes on Fly Like an Eagle!
@@Benisuber1 Tic toc tick do do do-doo :-)
Some of them are longer. The Arethra Franklin/Adele one is 41 mins. Both the Leland Sklar videos are 38 mins each. And they still felt short.
Living room conversations about musical moments where each person has their own Wurlitzer at their disposal is honestly new life goals.
Shoutout to the sound engineers ♥️
100%
omg i could listen to Larry Golding talk about keys parts for hours
Steely Dan! You gotta have a full episode of Steely Dan! Great work as usual love the videos!
Ray Charles - What'd I Say (quintessential Wurlitzer sound; at least 3 iconic riffs with a dozen or so variations on classic R&B progression) and Ray Manzarek - Riders On the Storm with the iconic Rhodes sound (2 classic riffs -- the driving rhythm plus that mesmerizing rain riff)
Great job Ryan taking on more of the intro!
Don't know anything about music but I love all of these. I'm learning so much.
funny that I never noticed how integral the organ is to Fly like an eagle's entire groove, you guys help us rediscover some great music
I cant wait for you guys to do guitars! Probably need several episode 😂
But that Alicia Keys intro though....it's the anticipation that it builds for her to come in after that "ta-dum" that the riff builds that always gets me. Barrelling through propelling you to sing the first words...
I would love a deep dive into Songs In The Key Of Life one day. In my view the album of the 20th century. As good as it gets.
And he used Baldwin pianos, like early Billy Joel, very distinctive sound.
Interesting, I love the sound of a Baldwin!
World's colliding.
Love five watt world - Love PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS REACT... What a day.
Great video! A Thousand Miles is also an apt example of pristine session drumming from Abe Laboriel, Jr.
"The Way It Is" was originally done (and co-written) by Don Henley - with Bruce on the piano.
Both have done it live since then - and sometimes "special artist appeared" with the other on it.
With Cowboy Bebop returning, it would be fun to have a deep dive with Yoko Kanno's (+ The Seatbelts) style
Btw this episode, dang so many excellent songs, and concepts. Love it
'And THAT thing...!' 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love the expression of your enthusiasm, dudes!
SO glad you include the pointer sisters. The piano solo in I'm So Excited still pumps me up!
I was literally playing The Pointer Sisters’ “Yes We Can Can” like an hour before I clicked on this video! My dad bought the album when it came out in ‘73 and I’ve loved it since then. 🎶
OUTKAST - ROSES!
RAY CHARLES - WHAT I'D SAY!
Awesome video chaps!
Honorable mention to the intro to Roses by outkast
Such a great list and discussion! Joachim Young's B3 work on "Fly Like an Eagle" is what made me first fall in love with the organ, and Vanessa Carlton's playing is too often underappreciated. With regards to the Pointer Sisters, what about the piano solo on "I'm So Excited"? But my favorite piano solo in rock has to be Chuck Leavell's extended solo at the centerpiece of the Allman Brothers' "Jessica".
Hello guys, fly like an eagle is an old time classic for me. Knows this song a looooooooooong time. I’m 51 years old. Masterful. Unbelievable.
That organ is sooooooo well played. But can I also say that bass guitar keeps you in the groove. Only a few lick here and there, but soooooo well played. I’m a bass player myself so 😎😎😎😎😎
Thanks guys - REALLY! I look forward to the new videos every week and learn SO much about music terminology and production every time! Keep up the good work!!!!
Natalie Cole’s “This will be” is still one of the most catchy piano rifts of all time.
This was great I was smiling like a fool from start to end. awesome!
I love, love, LOVE me some Larry Goldings! Sat right next to him at a John Scofield date at Jazz Alley in Seattle. Uh-mazing!
Aw Ryan introducing Jack this time so he didn't have to do it himself
I saw the Pointer Sisters in the early 70's. Look up a tune they sang with full jazz orchestra called "salt peanuts" - and you get a sense of how complex their roots in jazz were before they went mainstream.
How about some love for Carol King? "You're No Good" or "It's Too Late"..the latter having killer little transition riff. :)
Iconic piano intros? Firth of Fifth by Genesis is right up there in my books.
Almost anything from Steely Dan would be a good fit here.
Read this and instantly thought about that Fire in the Hole intro solo, Steely Dan is so on point it is hard to believe.
@@malvonanaliseiv8629 I know, right? Babylon Sisters came to my mind first, but there are so many.
They could have a whole series of piano riffs and solos and have content for years. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Steely Dan on there frequently.
I have been asking for Steely Dan. that would be awesome to watch. Lets hope!
Copyright thing maybe? I don't think Scary Pockets has ever done a Steely Dan cover.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'd like to think I played a small part in Larry being on here lol. I requested it a few times and invited him on his channel lol. I think you guys should spend about an hour picking his brain or maybe a whole series around his view of all types of music. I have officially subscribed. Thanks again

THE DAMN STANK FACE SO GOOD
When The Way It Is first came out I bought the album on vinyl and probably listened to nothing but that for a week. I’ve followed Hornsby ever since. The man can play. It’s great that you picked The Way It Is out. I love hearing the analysis you all bring to these songs. I learn so much from you. Thank you all!
Need an episode of goosebump-inducing headphone moments.
I'd watch a live uncut 2 hour versions of these chats!
Wow! Scary Goldings is one of my new favorite things! I loved the whole episode, guys, but I am DIGGING all the Scary Goldings stuff I can get my hands on. I'm surprised I'd not heard of that particular funk supergroup before.
Great Episode- Happy New Year!
I recognized the Bruce Hornsby Piano from the 2Pac Changes song. All songs are amazing.
A thousand miles I only hear as a phone ringtone
I’m missing Supertramp, Billie Joel, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Elton John, Ray Charles Jamiroquai and also Bruno Mars😢
I understand there are a lot, but if you did a 45 minutes video, I would totally dig it!
Amazing work guys, hug from Brazil, please continue doing this
Hahahaaa when he said "this is our Fly Like An Eagle"... I just knew it was gonna be 100 miles hahahaaaaaaaa
I looked up and listened to Judee Sill. Damn. What a tragic story. But what great music. Thank you for recommending her.
Better and better every episode
Another good one, I love the harmony topics, gimme more ;) thanks.
I wish you did Al Stewart The Year of the Cat :)))
I love these list kind of videos
I hope you do more top this and that!
All of you have knowledge, experience and musical taste good enough to make amazing lists.
Like top bass lines, top productions by decade or genre, top guitar riffs, solos, best songs with unusual instruments, etc. The possibilities are (almost) endless.
😁🎸❤
These videos need to be longer. It's like a master class in music. I don't understand a damn thing you guys are talking about, but it's so interesting.
Another great episode!! love you guys, keep up the good work , we need more than one a week! start a new series of videos you doing great!
cheers from GREECE!
Thanks so much Ali!
Some more honorable mentions: Nicky Hopkins’ iconic parts on “She’s A Rainbow”, Billy Preston’s parts on pretty much all of the rooftop songs. This was super fun guys! Thanks for the consistently awesome content🥰
Hey guys you nailed this. The song choices were great: James Brown, Bruce Hornsby, Vanessa Carlton ... But the stand out has to be Steve Miller Band. Your reactions, especially Larry Goldings insight: love it. ❤
would love to see longer videos! these are the best, klem 🖤
The Doors, "Riders on the Storm" Ray Manzarek's key work is iconic on that song. Prove me wrong.
My favorite piano part ever is probably the intro to Nothing to Fear by Per-Erik Hallin
So good - some of my favourite 'nostalgia' tunes.
‘Light My Fire’ is another good shout, or ‘Golden Brown’.
Do the Pointer Sisters!!! I to could listen for hours !
I love these videos so much, your insights are incredibly interesting. Great work guys. Also, please, please do Queen: Somebody to Love, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites the Dust, Don’t Stop Me Now. They’re all iconic for a reason, and I want to hear you guys break it down. Please!
Also also, Queen is incredible live, yall NEED to do the Somebody’ to Love live from Montreal (1981)
Richard Wright playing cirrus minor listening to that you can literally picture in your mind the church yard by a river with weeping willow trees in the English countryside haunting and peaceful at the same time
Great stuff guys!!!
Dirty Loops reaction????
Loved the outro
Damn! The Pointer Sisters are so good!!!
Thanks for the recomendations!
Kenny Kirkland's solo on Sting's "When the World Is Running Down"!!!
Bruce Hornsby. All time favorite......but all good choices....by very talented people.
Just saw Bruce Hornsby last week. Just him and a piano. Best solo show I’ve ever seen. I’m a professional piano player. He was mesmerizing.
This is my new home
Thanks for another great vid, keep up the good content !! Another great piano solo: Chuck Leavell in Eric Clapton's Old Love (Unplugged), gives me chills evvery time i listen to it
Lol scary Larry takes some chords from Bruce Hornsby and flips it around to Joy to The World by Three Dog night. I play keys a little but I never would have figured that out till I heard it
Who played the simple sounded piano solo before the final chorus of The Spinners classic "Games People Play?" It's absolutely brilliant in its simplicity and brings a smile to my face for the rest of the day.
There’s some amazing piano solos in Latin Jazz/Salsa
What a great video! I'm surprised there was nothing with Reese Wynans in here, though. That dude can PLAY!
The guy playing the "Fly Like An Eagle" organ part sounded like Larry Goldings with all of that funky shit underneath. No wonder he loves it! :D
respect. love that funk face Larry gave when listening to Steve Miller Band!
I come to think of David Foster and Winter Games, else Elthon John and the last Live from Tuscany with Sting has some great piano intros! Thank you guys for this channel and this clip! Keep up the good work! =)
The keys solo in All The Fools Sailed Away of DIO is just 🔥🔥🔥
Amazing songs. I understand why but I wish you guys make longer videos, if you can, otherwise you are awesome anyway 😊
Wow, the quickest 15 minutes on the net. I get so engrossed in these videos.
Funny back in 2014 I went to see Pat Metheny at the Greek Theater in LA. Bruce Hornsby was on the bill and I didn't know anything about him and assumed he was the opening act. So I got there about 40 minutes after the start time figuring I'd catch the end of this guy I didn't know (Hornsby) and all of the Metheny (plus his "Unity Group") set. Well, when I got there the whole Unity Group was onstage plus Pat, playing with Bruce. Stupid me!
you guys need to stream line this! Jack sell the company! We need you to do this full time job! :D
David Sancious on Springsteen's New York City Serenade.
My idea for an episode theme: best rhythm guitar parts that no one can hear in the mix. Also I can see why you wouldn't have picked it given... themes but I Don't Like Mondays - Boomtown Rats.
Edit: The guy who played the piano part for I Don't Like Mondays (Johnnie Fingers) apparently now lives in Tokyo and writes music for animes and other Japanese artists.
Oh! Come on! Vince Crane on Fire Poem and I Put a Spell on You (Crazy World of Arthur Brown), Larry Goldings on Shake Everything You Got, Keith Emerson (I'll get back to you on this), Brian Auger (ditto). Keith and Brian very, very exciting at their best, Vince the same but most of the time, Larry in a different space to most of what I've heard from him on the above track/album. Although most keyboardists were classically trained I'd prefer it if your list didn't include cod classical rubbish (although my top Keith choices (to follow) are classical-heavy).
LoveLifeGoodness&Freedom, Andy.
Have to react to the two months of Judee Sill - had a similar experience a decade or so ago along with Dory Previn. Amazing(ness if that’s a word one can use).
Nice vid! Hope there are more parts coming. What organ is Larry playing? Love that sound!
I Would love to watch y’all dissect a couple of tracks off of D’Angelo’s Voodoo
I'd love to hear more from Larry and Kris. I'd watch just an interview with them or something.
Meshuggah FTW!!! 🔥
Supertramp- Bloody well right! .. Boston- Foreplay
Larry Golding's interpretation of Bjork's Cocoon.
I remember That's The Way It Is coming out in a sea of guitar centric music, and here's a big piano track. That helped it stand out.
Would love to see a Phoebe Bridgers video!
Ummmm I need a whole episode on Fly like an eagle!! That song is sick!!! Especially on shrooooms!
I would really love to see the Pockets/Stories family work with American Idol contestants one week. Work with the singers to bring their skills to a stripped back setting or to work into a rapid-fire funky song arrangement session.
You should break down the sick keyboard riffs on "Worst of 2020" ;)
great pointer sisters album is "steppin out".. has the song "save the bones for henry jones cause henry don't eat no meat" .james brown plays his voice like a bass line
Jack, Ryan, et al. Please react to The Gap Band, maybe "Party Train"?? I kept hearing "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" on my Pandora, and finally started watching their videos this morning...WOWOMG! These guys were GREAT--I broke out dancing and laughing at 6am! Please tell us all about them? How was I not a fan as a kid??? Thank you so much for getting me out of bed on Wednesdays! Love this channel!
Loving this new series. Could you please explain why Remi Wolf's music is so good and makes me want to dance?
The Fine Young Cannibals track “Good Thing” was a big hit in the UK in the late 80s and has my favourite piano solo from a pop record played by Jools Holland.
Nice Nilsson t-shirt and Judee Sill shout out, Ryan!
Ryan's T game is on point!
