Biggest tip: dont be too proud - look at used/certified pre owned cars -cars depreciate the most in the first 1-3 years - you may not he able to afford your dream car, that's okay. Dont screw yourself to get something you CANT afford - Shop around, you may get a car that isnt the exact color that you want but it could be 4k less
I went in 7 years ago today and I've seen a lot of people doing some of the same thing you mentioned, getting expensive cars they can't afford. My first car I got when I was a 09 Hyundai Sonata, there are some honest dealers out but most new airmen aren't patient enough to wait. I still have that car to this day and it did help boost my credit score up.
Hey Bro, Great videos Great advice Great in sight about the Air Force I'm joining the Air Force and just can't wait to start a new chapter in my life. You look like you have a lot of fun being there so continue with positive energy & great attitude. Let the haters hate and the Ballers Ball.. Keep making videos Mannnn!!!
I shipped to Lackland for BMT February 16th, just graduated April 8th and just started tech school for Security Forces. Before I left for Basic, I spent so much time watching your videos! You help so many people and inspire so many people as well. Thanks, brother! Don't stop, man! Aim high!
I agree with your financial advice to young airmen, but I don't totally agree that they should avoid fun cars. For many of them, their young, single years will be their only opportunity to own a fun car until their future kids leave the house. I'm pretty biased being a car guy, but I did drive cheap cars and avoided having a car payment until I was a TSgt. I'm an MTI now so I'll be sure to brief all my trainees about the car buying process.
Very good advice, you clearly have a good grip on life and being in for almost 10 years so far I really wish I had this advice years ago when I first joined. LOL
Craigslist is pretty good. I got both of my cars from there. My first car was an '03 Acura CL Type-S with Navigation and six-speed manual. It was kept in pristine condition by the previous owner and was only $3800. My second car is an '03 Infiniti G35 sedan, also a six-speed manual. It was a bit pricier, and not as well kept, but it runs very well. If you look around a bit, and you know what to look for as far as quality, you can find yourself a steal.
Good video. You seem like a smart kid, thanks for your service. A good option my airman son is using is me. We just bought him a very nice used truck. He'll get it and make payments after tech school. Of course not everyone has such a freakin awesome dad
This video was informational. I am a older gentleman going into the Air Force. I have a challenger and I am fine. For the record, no dealership will give you 10-15 years to pay off a car. 6 at most.
You just fathered me bro lol! To think I was going to go in and get an infinity truck, haha! Maybe later in life, but right now it's about living FRUGAL. Thumbs up sir.
Iman Lowery Iman Lowery me too bro lol I was gonna buy a Lexus Coupe and all 😂 I have a paid off 13 Corolla so I’ll just keep that for another 5 yrs then get a newer model.
My friend worked at a Jeep dealership and the salesmen were too quick to get me into a car they knew I couldnt afford. Luckily, two weeks later they called me in and changed my payments, which I couldnt afford so I got lucked out and didnt have to keep the car. But I learned a valuable lesson. DO NOT IMPULSE BUY A CAR AND FUCK DEALERSHIPS.
I agree with everything you're saying except that "You can't haggle at a car dealership" Not true people! You absolutely can get a better price. Find the invoice price and negotiate up from there. Thanks for the video!
All very good points, but one thing I always fight with myself about is I'll be young and want to get a car that I'll get enjoyement out of. I want something that'll be more fun than a Civic or a Camry. I always find myself trying to justify why I would "need" something like a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, etc.
+Shuteye800 he shoulda continued with that joke for a bit "...and then bill cosby comes out wiht the stranges pills, asks you wheather youd have the red honda or the blue toyota, then next thing you know you wake up in a new buggatti."
Tip: Buy a beater car that lets you move around. pay cash. you most likely CANT afford the 5k car if you are starting out. save money pay off any debt first. then upgrade in 4-5 years to a 5k car since you should have promoted and earn a little bit more pay cash for it. and you should be good. Getting credit is overrated, debt is never good
you should see the parking lot here at whiteman lol so many fancy new cars. we did have to buy a car when we got here and we bought a used gmc Yukon we have 2 babies and one on the way..but the mustangs and cameros in the lot is out of control.lol
I'm glad my parents live 4 hours from my duty station so when I go overseas I'm just going to take my car home. But I do really want the 10th generation Honda Civic it will be my 3rd Civic and so it's embedded in me lol But I rather save and put money towards more important things.
Whenever I bought a car, I would've always waited until June-July. I see more people PCS within that timeframe and therefore, more options for cars to buy (on base).
Jon Cash but it may be good to get your credit up that's why he is saying you can get a cheaper car with a monthly payment so in the future you will have better credit so maybe when you want a nicer car you will be able to get a lower interest rate
So ever since I was a kid I've always had motorcycles, and right now I have four, three my dad and brothers use, one I have with me that I might try to work out riding rather then having to buy a car. What do you see around base as far as bikes go? I know you can have them and that there's a lot of rules for them, high viz vests, helmets, all that, but what do you see more as the experiance?
This video made it clear to me. I'd rather give my 92 Firebird a paint job than get another car for monthly payments! Thank you for your videos! Here's a subscribe click
Great video, Buying an expensive car is the biggest mistake i see people make in the air force. For some reason people just think of the price of the car in monthly payments, instead of the total price. I know a guy who got suckered into a 20% interest rate on a $15k car, and his reasoning was "the monthly payments are low".
How do driver licenses work? Let's say I'm from California and I get stationed in Nebraska for a while, would I have to get a whole new license or do I just use my original one
What would you suggest doing about cars that we currently own before joining the Air Force? Is it worth it to keep it and ship it to your first duty station or have someone drive it to you? or would you recommend selling it during/after BMT?
+Grant Covington keep your car and ship it. I left mine back home cause I'm stationed overseas on an island and didn't want the rust to ruin my truck. so I bought a small commuter car but I regret not bringing my truck. the only downside is that you usually have to wait a month overseas for your car to arrive and maybe about 2 weeks to a month stateside. my opinion is to save your money and keep your car until it dies or you have money to afford to get a new car. Hope this helps!
I want to buy a nissan 350z once I save up money after enlisting in the USAF, but I also want to station in Japan, should I save until I hopefully get stationed there or buy in the US and get it shipped.
Glad I didn’t enlist when I was younger and lived a little life first. I now OWN 2 built mustangs and if I enlist I’ll probably invest the rest of my money into my auto shop
What if I already have a truck it's a diesel guzzler but payed off. You think it will be best for me to stick around with that or buy something cheaper?
Depends on how much debt. If you can get a minimal amount then you can start building credit while in service so when you get out you can get a great score to buy a house.
Got to build that credit by owing money on something! Pay by credit card ... but have the funds to pay it off BEFORE it becomes due. In order to have excellent credit, pay your bills on time and pay more than you owe. If you have a car loan for 4 years ... pay it off in 3. If a payment is due on the 15th ... pay it on the 1st ... and try to be one month ahead on rent, mortgage or car loans. Hard work pays off ... and when it's time to get that VA loan to get the house ... you will have excellent credit and low interest. Good credit and money in savings is the way to go. Have an allotment going into a savings account and don't even think about taking the money out ... even saving $50 a month gives you 600 in the bank! Always try to put SOMETHING on a savings allotment.
I'm about to enlist after this semester,I'm a military brat mom retired from the Air Force & my dad did 2 years navy & 2 army during Vietnam then he was a locksmith on Lackland AFB for a few years, most people who have worked there 20+ years know him. My dad and older sister still live in San Antonio,I'm 20 and of course I want to buy a car after I enlist and get to tech school. Now I'm wondering if a used 09 Dodge Challenger would be too much for a first car. I know you said if I get a car to not buy one any higher than 10k. What would be the idea kind of car to go for, what do you drive for example? I'm also with usaa through my mom but when I get my own car I'll get my own policy.
Should I keep my car? I'm currently leasing a car (almost two years in) that I really like, and would like to eventually just own a car one day that I no longer have to pay for (even if that means I'm not driving it for a while). HOWEVER, the company I'm leasing the car from said that if I'm going into the military, they offer an option where I can just give them back the car and break the lease with no penalties (except for losing the two years of payments I've already made). SO... is paying off the car a good investment? Or should I return it and figure out something later?
I went to a dealership and was told I couldn't use military discount since I had used it previously. They lied, so I went to another dealership who gave me the discount.
How do you store your car? Does the military have places for cheaper? I have a toyota camry I got recently for a great price and don;t want to lose it. Thanks.
Ok so my phone service sucks and I need wifi. I didn't listen to the video yet. I will. But my question is, do you need a car when you're stationed? Is it hard to sell it when you have to leave for another duty station? Are there cars on base that you can use if you don't have one?
Best tip is to get the most money out of the military as you can. Im a SrA and I get paid around 70k a year. Bah 3k. Cola 700. and more. I pocket it all. Bought my dream car for 25k. 1 Year later its 17k in debt only. However I saved around 5k. Have 27k invested in stocks. My car is an Evo X. AWD for any terrain.
Mylf IHeartHaters 70k a year......thats impressive.....must have A TON of scare badges to be earning that kind of dough. Even then I'm curious how you are getting 3k for housing and able to pocket it all? But congrats I guess, though I'm almost certain something in your story is false. I know a few CCTs who aren't raking in that much, they stand to make a ton from bonuses if they re up after their contracts are up but don't receive a base of 70k and certainly don't after taxes and normal life expenses. Just my thoughts and experiences though...
Is it a bad idea going in with already having a car? is it too much of a hassle moving it to where ever your stationed at? would like a response, shipping out soon! Thanks
+Cameron LA that I wouldn't be sure, it would be smarter to wait til after tech school when you find out where you'll be based, go on leave for a week or two and then ship your car to that base

I know a few CCTs who aren't raking in that much, they stand to make a ton from bonuses if they re up after their contracts are up but don't receive a base of 70k and certainly don't after taxes and normal life expenses. Just my thoughts and experiences though...
What if your starting as an e-3, can you afford that mustang or camaro now?

Can I take my car to tech school? I live in San Antonio and my TS will be at Sheppard only 4 hours away.
Is it a bad idea going in with already having a car? is it too much of a hassle moving it to where ever your stationed at? would like a response, shipping out soon! Thanks
The Air Force can ship your car to the base you'll be at for FREE
I had the same question too since I already my car
+Jaime Jr Gallegos What about from your home to your tech school?
+Cameron LA that I wouldn't be sure, it would be smarter to wait til after tech school when you find out where you'll be based, go on leave for a week or two and then ship your car to that base
