Sweetie, “the choir” was just Freddie, Roger and Brian- meticulously laying down track after track to build that huge sound out of 3 men’s voices. There were no other vocalists brought into it. (The last part when you see John joining in was mimicking, he never actually contributed to vocals in the studio as he wasn’t confident in his voice)
*Definitely* go and react to this same song Live at Montreal 1981, to see how they changed it to a version that could be performed without that multi-tracked choir sound. Just four men, their instruments, and voices... no backing tracks, no autotune, no clicks or earpieces. Just a truly great set of musical geniuses in their element!

And it's hard to comprehend today with all the digital technologies what that meant - really taping actual record tapes together and copying the material onto a new tape again and again and again - and if you messed up, you might end up with a shredded tape and had to start from scratch.

Amazing fact about Queens' lead guitarist Brian May. He was actually working on getting his Ph.D in astrophysics when Queen was formed. Music meant so much to him so he put his doctorate on the back burner. After Freddie Mercury died, Queen disbanded. Even while still part of the group Brian and his father designed and built a new kind of guitar. Brian's IQ has been measured in the 160's. That's even beyond Big Bang Theory smart. So he was a real genius on top of being a musical genius. after Queen disbanded, Brian went back to working toward his doctorate. He finally got it in 2006 or 7. He's now Dr. Brian May Ph.D. He's also written about 6 books on the subject of astrophysics.

I'll echo others and recommend the live version of this from Montreal. This is the studio version and it's great but the live version is one of the best performances ever, in my opinion and quite a bit different. Even if you don't make a video of it, you owe it to yourself. It really highlights how different Queen was from the studio to live performances when Freddie played to the crowd.
Freddie said if people wanted the same thing all the time, they could just buy the record. If they wanted to see a show, they'd see Queen live.

They didn't just "bring the choir" ... they WERE the choir! Harmonies that probably surpassed the Beach Boys' efforts, but with actual musical talent and technical skill to back it up. There are very few contenders for "Greatest Rock Band of All Time" - these guys set the bar at a level that no other band has ever really approached. Sure there are a couple groups that were extraordinary in their own little niche groups, but Queen transcended so many genres - and excelled at all of them - that they really have no equal!

    • @docgonzales

The only negative for me is that live they had to drop a harmony if Freddy had to do lead vocal duties as John Deacon didnt sing, Brian Mays guitar sometimes played the missing third but if all 4 sang then you might put them in Beach Boys, or even Jellyfish's vocal level as a live act.

These guys were real studio perfectionists. They would layer their own voices to get that "choir" sound. Plus, this song was somewhat controversial in the '70's when it was recorded, because Freddie Mercury(the lead singer)was openly gay, and it wasn't as well accepted back then. Here's another little fact about the band: Brian May, the guitarist, is a Phd. in astrophysics. You did a great job on this review. Keep up the good work.

I thought George Michaels did this song great justice at the Queen tribute concert after Freddy passed. There is only one Freddy and this is still outstanding because of his vocals. I just think George Michaels did a damn good rendition of this song with the other members of Queen to honor Freddy and I THOUGHT it was the best moment of the Tribute concert

Loved watching you enjoy Queen! Btw - the “choir” is only the 3 out of 4 of them, layering their voices on tracks many multiple times to get the choir effect! The lead singer, Freddie Mercury, greatly admired Arethra Franklin you will enjoy ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST. Also listen to COOL CAT and the suggestion of SOMEBODY TO LOVE live at Montral ‘81. You will see a slightly older Freddie with a more powerful voice and legendary performance by Queen.

Two weeks on a Queen kick? The group was together for 20 years! Their Live Aid set from 1985 just celebrated 35 years as the consensus best live performance ever.
