    BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

    SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

I had the same reaction with 916 - I'm kinda relieved Rachel didn't get it either.

    Round 1
    Got to 1 either side.
    Round 2
    (9 - 5) x 75 - (6 x 10)
    Round 3
    75 x 4 + 10 + 7 + 2
    Round 4
    (50 - 6) x (7 + 5 - 1)

    1. Can only see 915 or 917
    2. (5x10-10)x6=240 or (9-10/10)x6x5=240
    3. (75+10/2)x4-1=240
    4. (50-7+1)x(5+6)=484 or (8-1)x7x(50/5)-6=484

Did the 916 solution on an online calculator and it is a very hard solution as the multiplier is not an integer

Yeah that 916 looked incredibly difficult, apparently you have to go up to 5496 and divide by 6. Not surprised Rachel couldn't get it either in the 30 seconds.
      I thankfully saw both 915 and 917.
      915:
      8 + 1 = 9
      9 x 100 = 900
      900 + 7 + 6 + 2 = 915
      For 917:
      8 + 1 = 9
      100 + 2 = 102
      102 x 9 = 918
      918 - 1 = 917

There’s absolutely no way anyone would get this in 30 seconds. If you gave someone a full day maybe.

In the first round, I'm not surprised Rachel didn't get the sum. It was _remarkably_ difficult for a one-large.
    100 - 2 = 98
    98 x 7 = 686
    686 + 1 = 687
    687 x 8 = 5496
    5496 / 6 = 916
The only reason I saw it is because I'm used to doing tricks with ratios thanks to my interest in four-large puzzles. Here the ratio is 4 : 3 (the same one you get if you multiply 100 and divide by 75), which I made with the 8 and the 6.
Unfortunately, one can't say the same thing about the next numbers round. I saw Luke's solution and also had these:
    9 - 5 = 4
    10 x 6 x 4 = 240
    10 x 5 = 50
    50 - 10 = 40
    40 x 6 = 240
    10 + 6 = 16
    75 x 16 = 1200
    1200 / 5 = 240
In the third numbers round, I saw the contestants' solution and also had these:
    10 / 2 = 5
    75 + 5 = 80
    80 x 4 = 320
    320 - 1 = 319
    75 + 7 = 82
    82 x 4 = 328
    10 - 1 = 9
    328 - 9 = 319
    75 - 7 - 4 = 64
    10 / 2 = 5
    64 x 5 = 320
    320 - 1 = 319
In the final numbers round, I saw Caroline's solution, because I always factor if possible, but I also had these:
    50 x 8 = 400
    6 + 5 + 1 = 12
    12 x 7 = 84
    400 + 84 = 484
    50 x 5 = 250
    250 - 8 = 242
    7 - 6 = 1
    1 + 1 = 2
    242 x 2 = 484
    8 - 1 = 7
    50 x 7 x 7 = 2450
    2450 / 5 = 490
    490 - 6 = 484

I: Looks easy, and as Matthew has pointed out, it's not. 915 is rather trivial. Mysteriously difficult indeed.
II: How did I miss that one?
III: At least that one's even easier and gotten within about 5 seconds.
IV: Another easy one. Just factor it: 11X44, like the first contestant did.

    • @TheSpotify95
      @TheSpotify95 Před 10 měsíci

I got both 915 and 917 quite easily. 916 is very difficult and apparently requires going into four figures and dividing back down.
      240 was incredibly easy with 10 + 9 + 5 to get 24, then 24 x 10. Didn't need the 75 (I looked for a way to make 24, withholding a 10, as it looked easier than trying to use the 75 for a solution).
Missed 319, but looking back, that was easy enough once you'd got to 300.
Not great with factors (I'm not a 6 small player, which factoring is key for mastering) so didn't get 484. However, I've just realized that 50 x 8 = 400, and the other numbers (withholding the 7) can make a 12. Then it's as easy as 12 x 7 and add it on.
