@@MrSniperfox29 whenever a contestant picks all 4 large numbers. That means that if the target is around 250 that means you’ll be able to get to at least within 10 by adding them up as the four large added together makes 250
I did it how she did it. I didn't realise until the clock ended that you can just add them all lol. Sometimes when there's a solution that's TOO simple, the expectation of having to work one out can distract you.
I admittedly did it the "hard way," the way Linda did it. I NEVER would have thought to just add the numbers up like Steve did, as that had never happened before. Still, great job to both!
I did it the hard way! I can't believe you can just add them all up. Mind blown. And when Carol said that'd never happened before. I wonder if it's happened since. What are the odds?!
Less than 1 in 900. The target is any number from 100 to 999, but there's a chance that the numbers might add up to less than 100 making it impossible.
Most people in the comments genuinely enjoy doing the numbers and share their solutions with others. I do it too sometimes. There's even a whole subreddit for the number games, so I wouldn't say people do it to look smart tbh
Not really. Assuming the numbers selected add up to more than 100 anyway, which they won’t do if you pick 6 small or even most 1 large selections. There are 900 possible target numbers that can appear (100 thru 999, and yes 100 has been a target number before so it is the lowest target number) so the chances of that exact target number being the sum of all the selected numbers (assuming it’s even possible) is 1 in 900. Obviously pretty small odds compared to some things but not what I’d call astronomical.
At these odds of 1/900 It's likely to crop up at least once if they play the numbers game 624 times or more with numbers totalling over 100 (even with the common selection of one large and five small you probably meet it half the time). Given that they play more than one numbers round per episode, and there are already more than 7000 episodes of Countdown, it's very likely has happened on other occasions (assuming the number generator and selection is genuinely random). This time they noticed but maybe if a more conventional solution was available it may well have passed unobserved (perhaps the presence of four large numbers makes it more likely for someone to pick it up).
I did 2 + 1 = 3 3 x 100 = 300 300 -50 = 250 75/25 = 3 250 +3 = 253 Expecting that solution then he said just add them up and I looked at them again, what is he talking about? There's no way that'll ... *facepalm* WHAATTTTTT!!!!!!
@Nullifidian Thanks for that link, but the computer's a cheat - it keeps using powers (4^2, etc) which isn't allowed on Countdown, so I've won...but it won't have it
Well, there's 900 different numbers, so that would be one in 900. But not every set of numbers will give you a sum higher than 99, so the odds are even lower.
Now if one of those contestants had been any chancellor of the exchequer then I guarantee not only would he not have gotten it but the fact he didn't would have resulted in the Bank of England having to raise interest rates and raise the rate of inflation!

Literally adding up all the numbers to get the result is extremely rare. So we just don't try that, because it never happens

Less than 1 in 900.

I did what she did! I thought I was being smart figuring out 75 ÷ 25 = 3 😂 Seriously I'm so bad at maths 😂😂❤
don't feel bad, I took me a bit to see that too.
I did it the hard way too.
I did what you did! If I was on the show at that time, I would buzz before 1 second even went by!
I did 100 * (75 / 25) - 50 + 1 + 2
I did 75/25 is 3, times 100 is 300, -50 is 250, +1+2 is 253.
Same
Way to complicate XD
Same.
I think I also found another way: 75x2=150,150+100=250. 50/25=2, 250+ 2=252.252+1=253.
Can't use 2 twice
@@youngdolo8 Lol your not very smart are you
he didn’t use 2 twice he made a two and used a 2 the strategy is correct
Good one!
You can do what Linda did and then divide the whole thing by 1 to use all the numbers.
Or multiply by 1
It was nice to see Edna Krabapple open the show.
Countdown's numbers lady's named Vorderman? I've been calling her Carol Kester!
I added them all up with seconds to spare. Never felt so clever.
I did it the "hard way". 2x100 +50 +(75/25)
I did it completely differently, 1+2+50+75+27+100
Mr2at you used the 2 twice. You meant 25.
You didn't do it differently.... you did exactly of what he did ( btw 27 wasn't in it)

Look smart, no. Be a wise guy, absolutely. Wasn't Kai notorious for that?
im not smart i used a calculator and i did 100/4 = 4 x 75 = 300 - 50 + 1+2 = 253
It's an easy one, anyway, so I doubt if people are "trying to look smart".
2+1=3
3x100=300
300-50=250
75/25=3
250+3=253
Add the whole lot up and you get there. Nice one :)

75/25=3
250+3=253
I just added them all up as well.
Add all of them

300 - 50 = 250
250 + 1 + 2 = 253

150 + 100 = 250
250 +2 + 1 = 253
i did 1 + 1 + 1 +... = 253
also anyone else think this game is easy a lot of the time

I'm gonna tweet rachel and find out if theres a way to find the odds of this happening...
I want to say 1/899, but not all sets of tiles add up to a playable number. It's probably somewhere around 1/1500.
75/25 = 3
100*3 =300
300-50 = 250
250+1+2 =253
100 x 25 = 250 1+2 = 3+250 = 253
So quick add up and we're there...
Only opened link to comment.
100+75+50+25+2+1 = 253 so the sum all of the numbers is 253
Heh I did 100 x 2 = 200 + 50 = 250. 75 / 25 = 3. 250 + 3 = 253. Then they say you can just add all the numbers and I facepalmed.

3 x 100 = 300
300 -50 = 250
75/25 = 3
250 +3 = 253

75/25=3
3*100=300
300-50+1+2=253
50-0 = 5 plus the 2 and the 3 is 253
You cant do that also you cant do 50 - 0 or + the 3 because they weren't one of the numbers
