Top 5 Sketching Tips for Beginner Artists

- In this video, I'll be sharing the top five things I wish I knew when I first started sketching. In my opinion, quicker sketches and studies are just as important and more finalized pieces. Not to mention, there's much more of a chance that a beginner artist will be able to progress faster when using whatever time is available on a continuous basis, than taking very long periods off between larger pieces. Treasure those sketchbooks and make it a habit!

1st- You look gorgeous. 2nd- the hand sketch is beyond perfection. Thanks a lot for sharing
I don’t understand why you don’t have a lot more views. I’m scrolling through your videos while watching a few. This is GREAT material, very well delivered. I’m subscribing.
Hello, Elizabeth! I guess I'm just not lucky when it comes to the CZcamss. 😁 I share long videos, which don't usually do well on the platform. Glad you found me and that you're finding my videos helpful. Enjoy your art practice!
Perfectionism is my weakness, I’m obsessed with my drawings always looking pretty.
So many of us struggle with perfectionism, Catherine. 💚I talk a lot about perfectionism, fear of failure, Imposter Syndrome and limiting beliefs, and what I've personally done to overcome these struggles a lot over on Instagram. If you'd like to check out my mini-podcast episodes for artists, and live art chat recordings, you can find them here: instagram.com/erika_lancaster_art/ 😉Keep going!
@@ErikaLancasterArt Hi! I found the podcasts on your IG and they were very helpful. Thank you!
Excellent video edition
Awesome job. ✌️
By breaking down my drawing into smaller, less threatening subjects I am allowing myself to draw with less restraints. This was a very big help. What equipment to use was helpful along with the better ways to hold the pencil, Being new at holding the pencil this way ,it took some getting used to. It turned out to make a difference in my sketches.
It's awesome to hear that you're enjoying drawing more, Jennifer! Breaking things down, and learning to visualize what we see as combinations of shapes is essential so that we're then able to compare individual parts in terms of width, height, location, etc. and create an effective preliminary sketch.
I've also found that creating studies that allow me to focus specifically on one subject/object has allowed me to develop my observational skills immensely and gain confidence in my technique to then take on more complex compositions with greater ease.
Learning to hold a pencil for drawing purposes is so important. It does take a while to get used to, since we learn to hold pens and pencils a specific way for writing since we're little kids in school. I'm happy to hear that you're practicing this and that you're seeing progress!
Wishing you much progress in your drawing and painting, Jennifer! :)
Very helpful! The advice on drawing the big/general parts first was my favorite point. I'm just starting out & I see how important that is, even if I'm not quite great at it yet... haha
Thanks so much for watching! :) Happy you enjoyed this one and that you're getting started with your drawing.
nice, give inspiration...I like your creation , GBU.
Gotta get a sketchbook. That'll be my number one next thing to do. I do my sketches on loose paper like you described only because I am just starting out and I haven't made any big investments. I am using pencils--colored and graphite-- and building materials as I build skills. Your videos are great for me because I hear you say in tones and values not explicitly expressed--enjoy the process--have fun with it. That's what I intend to do. I know myself well enough that if I'm not enjoying myself, I'm not going to keep doing it. Thank you!
Hi, James! Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. :)
I'm so happy to hear you're finding helpful nuggets in my videos.
It's SO true! It's important to enjoy the learning and exploration journey as we move forward. This is key. And setting perfectionism aside, I feel has also helped me move forward a lot faster, too.
Hope you're able to get a sketchbook for your drawing, soon! I lost sooo many drawings that I wish I had.
Wish you a great day and tons of enjoyment as you move forward!

hi greetings dear friend! Great video and thanks for sharing
have a great monday
Hello! Thanks so much for popping by. :) So happy you enjoyed it. Have a lovely day!
Just found you, subbed & liked. Thanks for speaking a little slower than others & starting your drawing from scratch so I could see how you BUILT the drawing.
Hi Larry! I'm so happy to hear that you found this video helpful! It's so important for me to continue developing my freehand drawing skills and, for the most part, I try to get my students to stop tracing and being afraid of taking off those "training wheels". It means the world to me that you said this, because I really want to demonstrate and encourage others to not be afraid to build things from the ground up. :) I'd love to hear how things are working out for you!
Thank you for you quick reply. I am warmed by your lovely response. I am 80 & just recently started the process of sketching again. What I found is that 'I' started to bite off more than I could chew. So, now I am slowing down my ambitions. What I did was, in my internet roaming was to find a subject to work on, my ambition was bigger than my abilities at the time. Now I am just working on the basics & when my improvement matches or exceeds the ability I will back to the project laid out for myself. Thank you again. Your showing how you start a drawing is the most helpful & appreciated. Paul Priestly is another on CZcams I have a liking of, but I like left handed people the most. Incidentally I understand that tomorrow, August 13, 2018, is national LEFT HANDED DAY, YEAH for us.
Hello, again Larry! It makes me incredibly happy to hear that you're getting into sketching again. Age is truly just a number and there are a lot of incredibly talented artists around your age. I'm sorry to say that I'm not actually left-handed! The way I film my videos makes it necessary for me to flip it when I'm editing... : / Sorry to have given you that idea.
Sketching and drawing is essential for any kind of artist and I really want to continue producing videos that encourage others to work from the ground up and do as much freehand drawing as they can. So do stay tuned! And reach out to me through my website: www.erikalancaster.com if you need any specific tips.
Thanks so much for your message, Larry. It means the world! Take care.
Sorry about the left handed day thingy, I thought you were someone else. I meant everything else that I wrote.
No problem at all! No worries. :)
very nice
Thanks so much! I appreciate it. :)
Hey, guys! Which of these five points mentioned here cause you the most trouble and which was easiest for you to get past?
Erika Lancaster I used references which I am doing now, it makes easy to make other sketch
Erika Lancaster I appreciate your reference idea of taking own pictures and portraying it on paper
Yeah... the sooner you start taking your own reference pictures and forming your own library, the better! Of course, it's important to learn about what makes a good photograph in terms of lighting, composition, etc. Not any picture works as an art reference!
Yp
This video help me take out all sketching books and start drawing again. Thanks Erika.
Hola Erika!
¡Hola! :)
You are beautiful dear friend!
You're so kind! Thank you. :)
Can you make video on how to art videos
Oooohh! That's a great idea! I don't think I'm so great at it yet, and I'm still experimenting, but I'll definitely write it down so I can do a video on this topic in the future! Thanks for this!
Erika Lancaster ,Thanks to you also
