  • How fast do the Class 170 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains accelerate and how does that compare to other types of train. Here we sample a 3-car Class 170201 on its journey from Cambridge to Norwich - starting from its Brandon stop through the beautiful Anglian countryside. Here the line speed limit is 90mph. The 170 has a top speed of 100mph. How long will it take to reach 60 and 90mph despite some uphill gradients? The 170's are built by Bombardier and are 'sister trains of the Class 168, 171, and 172 DMU's as well as being cousins of the 'Electrostar' range of electric Multiple Unit trains (EMUs) which are classes 357, 375, 376, 377, 378, 379 and 387. The 170s are powered by a 422hp engine for each car connected to a hydraulic transmission. The 3-car unit weighs 135 tons, so these trains have an approximate power to weight ratio of 9.3 hp/ton.
