Made this mistake in my mini 3 pro and it emergency landed almost in the middle of a forest 1km away from home. Luckily I was able to redirect and make it land on the sidewalk of a road nearby and saved it
Pro Tip (I fly drones): when you're flying back, depending on the wind conditions as you are nearing the end of the battery life go to the maximum height that you are allowed to fly and definitely be flying in sport mode. You can override battery alarms and in sport mode you'll get the maximum speed. It will start to automatically land but as long as you are at maximum height, you can fly another good distance as it slowly descends. The joys of DJI :)
Aside from sport mode, flying near the ground or way up in the air can help you mitigate against wind. You can see if you're flying faster or slower high or down by the ground. I think many drone pilots have ran into situations like this, at least once in their learning journey I first ran into this when I was in the other side of a giant lake and while I had more than 50% battery I realized that there was a strong headwind and barely made it back. I found that there was a lot less wind down by the water, but it will try to automatically land at a certain point. So it's really helpful to fly up to maximum allowed height before it starts to auto land. This will give you some additional runway
rip the battery. I had mine die on me 200m in the air becasue a blizzard caught me 2k away while filming a mountian and the bottom sensors got covered and the drone refused to desend as it thought it was near the ground. Would not desend faster than landing speed. Luckly I managed to position it over a large snow bank which it fell softly into. Drone was fine. Battery died though. (DJI Air 2s)
That seems like a horrendous idea. Flying in sport mode and gaining altitude uses far more battery then just cruising along. The drone will initiate an auto land a lot sooner then if you flew it normally.
@@josephhacker6508 That hasn't been my experience. Particularly for the use case I shared and have personally experienced where DJI software forces you to land. I would rather it force land at me on land with a 1% battery than auto land into the water at 8%. Again, it's not about efficiency in this situation, it's about gaining the additional horizontal distance that you get as it auto-lands but you can keep moving horizontally (ie getting closer to land) than if you were flying along 10ft above the water. at 30mph, if it forces a landing due to low battery, and you're at 399ft up, we're talking a good 500-1000ft of distance. Just speaking from my own experiences with a DJI Phantom and Mavic.
I don't want to bother you, but just a little trick to help you: I think, you could see the wind direction out there on the smoke of the ship. It was blowing away from you, if I see it right... Maybe that could be a hint for you next time to return earlier. You had great luck with the small fishing boats in reach. And most importantly: Have fun with your drone! :-)
A lot of these drone guys don't realize flying against the wind equates to almost double the battery power.. commercial drone flying 101. So yes the drone calculates it's gonna need that 35% or whatever to get back safely to home so it warns you, but in reality, it needs like 45%+..
@Slim Sheep I'm sure they realize it. Most drone guys are drone guys because they fly drones. I doubt this was his ll2nd time flying it. He simply just took a risk because he can obviously afford to get a new one of need be.

I would be saying the same thing but he is not in FAA's airspace. So it doesn't matter about that. The real problem is "what if". What if there was a manned aircraft in the area...... one day, it most likley will happen. And accident that leads to a fatality.
@jdsstegman There is no airspace that is unregulated. It is either controlled or uncontrolled, meaning ATC is involved or not. All drone owners are supposed to register with FAA. It does not matter where you fly. The rule is you have to be able to see the drone at all times.
@brandonbass7105 FAA conducts the International Aviation Safety Assessment Program (IASA), assessing the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of each country that has carriers operating to the United State.
