Thanks for presenting an Articulate and informative demonstration of your techniques
It would be Good if ALL educational videos were so well presented
Liked and Subd
Oh and thanks for No background Noise and a Good human narration
Good instructions. My daughter's coach uses tempo trainer set at 1 sec interval; 2 beeps when pushing off wall in streamline and dolphin kick every 1 sec. She has shown great improvement...
That's THE best fly lesson video I saw until now. 🤓👍
Thanks! Great bass line, too.
brilliant technique demonstration! So inspiring!!

Ans tjr where are ya from?
1
00:00:09,895 --> 00:00:15,207
Underwater dolphin kick is extremely important for competitive swimming.
2
00:00:15,429 --> 00:00:23,383
After each turn or start you are allowed to do 15 meters of this really fast technique in freestyle, breaststroke or backstroke.
3
00:00:23,907 --> 00:00:28,700
This means that in a short course race you can swim most of it underwater.
4
00:00:29,950 --> 00:00:36,744
Today we will talk about three really important aspects of this sometimes called “the fifth stroke”.
5
00:00:37,211 --> 00:00:38,566
1- Streamline
6
00:00:39,315 --> 00:00:44,773
The first thing to master for a correct underwater kick is the streamline.
7
00:00:45,102 --> 00:00:50,294
Underwater butterfly kick is all about moving efficiently through the water, so it is very important to create less resistance.
8
00:00:50,508 --> 00:00:53,916
A tight streamline will help you move faster.
9
00:00:54,134 --> 00:00:57,032
Lock your hands high above your head.
10
00:00:57,358 --> 00:01:00,364
Your elbows should be straight and tight.
11
00:01:00,389 --> 00:01:04,512
Your head should be between your biceps or a little bit in front.
12
00:01:04,838 --> 00:01:08,914
There should be no space between your shoulders and your neck.
13
00:01:09,071 --> 00:01:11,576
Your core should be tight.
14
00:01:11,775 --> 00:01:18,108
Your legs should be touching each other and your feet should be in plantar flection as much as possible.
15
00:01:19,008 --> 00:01:26,325
You will keep this position for about 2 seconds or less after each push of the wall or after the dive.
16
00:01:26,690 --> 00:01:32,062
A good streamline will carry that very important initial speed off the wall.
17
00:01:32,501 --> 00:01:33,768
2- Hips
18
00:01:34,387 --> 00:01:38,919
Before you start to slow down in the streamline, you need to start kicking.
19
00:01:39,285 --> 00:01:45,699
I say that it is helpful to think of butterfly kick as if you were just moving your hips up and down.
20
00:01:46,017 --> 00:01:53,969
Even though you are using most of the muscles in your core, which extend to your chest and upper back.
21
00:01:54,390 --> 00:02:01,508
The hips are where all the power originates, but the legs are what keep the velocity of the body through the water.
22
00:02:02,032 --> 00:02:03,308
3- Feet
23
00:02:03,534 --> 00:02:06,929
Even though all of the muscles in your legs are working
24
00:02:06,954 --> 00:02:12,599
it is useful to think about your feet and the sensation of the water in that part of the body.
25
00:02:12,748 --> 00:02:18,886
You will know when you are doing an effective underwater kick by the feeling of the feet.
26
00:02:19,390 --> 00:02:23,807
This is the place of a lot of nerve endings, so use them.
27
00:02:24,139 --> 00:02:28,030
Your feet should always be pointing in plantar flexion.
28
00:02:28,327 --> 00:02:32,447
The more ankle flexibility you have the better.
29
00:02:33,020 --> 00:02:44,638
Finally, one thing that not a lot of swimmer know is that during the underwater kick it is equally important to kick strongly in the back kick as it is in the front kick.
30
00:02:44,666 --> 00:02:50,008
This means that you are making an effort while the feet are going up and while the feet are going down.
31
00:02:50,608 --> 00:02:55,247
You are kicking at all times and moving fluidly through the water.
32
00:02:55,441 --> 00:03:03,650
Remember, tight streamline, move hips up and down, and feel the water with your feet!
33
00:03:03,759 --> 00:03:12,100
Practice at least one kick after every turn and once you dominate that move on to two and so on.

Thanks for your translate.
Jesus how long of time did you spend on this???
is this faster than just kicking normally( like in freestyle ) because i dont want to race.
It is faster!
It's faster than swimming backstroke, check out this video czcams.com/video/nWrfDsVC2tk/video.html
Oh yeah! When done properly, it is the fastest way to travel underwater. That's why it's called the 5th stroke! 👍😎
this is the fastest swim pose for human
With the momentum of the push off or the dive this is when you move fastest, you use the underwater to carry that speed
this guy made a mistake: this is allowed in freestyle, BUTTERFLY, and backstroke. In breast stroke, you can only do one of those
You are right. Thank you!
jordan wang
In breastsroke you can do you pullout for as long as you want, even to the other wall, just so long as it's just ONE pullout.
@@Pianoholicmazda No you have to stop before the second yellow marker in short course and the first red marker in long course.
GamingPros nope you can do as long as you want breastroke pullout, do some reading online...
Great video!
+Marco De Castro than you!
los videos son buenos y claro
thanks
Great video! Sometimes I feel that my dolphin kick originates from my head and not from my hips, does it mean that I am doing it wrong? Thanks!
In backstroke butterfly and freestyle I find that it helps my kick if I start the kick with my hands so that was I dont need to use as much energy on the kick because the wave that starts with my hands carry through my body until the kick is huge at the end of each kick
I’m a backstroker and I’m very close to qualifying for state and I was wondering how can I deal with holding my breath to get this long of an underwater kick?
I have won a silver medal in 100m freestyle in state level but couldn't qualify for nationals in timing
Thanks, dropped my 100 fly from 1:07 to 1:01 and broke the 11-12 record at my school, I’m guessing a lot of the credit has to go to you because my underwater weren’t very good before
Excelente video¡¡¡
Gracias!
Thanks!
Thank you!
When I try the dolphin kick I look like a dying dolphin that can't swim at all
lol
XD
Same
Thnks
How do I stop my knees from hitting each other? Is that normal? I just don't want to hurt my knees
I know how to do that. It's super easy and fun
Am just getting more seriously into swimming this year as have moved into Triathlon. My kick though, is really bad, as I have poor ankle flexibility (prob through years of running/cycling). I Have been trying the odd dolphin kick after turns, but it seems I slow almost to a stop. Any tips or a video on improving this flexibility... PS. I find your tutorials excellent and easy to understand & by far the best produced out there.
+John Dodd yes I will do a video on flexibility in the future! Thanks for commenting!
Remember, kicks start from chest, core, hips and the feet are the results of it...

I purchase 3 swimming caps in your site^^
Is there any way to help me do backstroke straight (we swim outside) instead of hitting lane ropes?
Thanks for the video. May I ask if there is any conscious movement of the hands / wrists / arms during the dolphin kick. Meaning should you keep them static (they will move only due to the movement of the body due the kick) or tilt them up or down slightly depending on the kick.
You want to keep them static. Some really amazing swimmers like Caeleb Dressel slightly move their hands, but that is natural. He isn't thinking about it. It doesn't make him go faster, his arms just naturally move slightly because of how powerful his dolphin kick is. In fact, arm movement slows you down slightly. Probably not noticeable as you swim, however
Thank you, that was helpful
Thanks for this great educative video about underwater dolphin kick.
Do you know "Léo Schilling" ?
You can see on youtube his video: "50m Underwater Dolphin Kick 2251 by Leo Schilling"
His time for the 50m in 25m swimming pool is 22.51
Maybe he is faster than Hill Taylor !?
What nobody told you: swimming is an excruciating exercise but very fun too
What is the 3d program he used for human body visualisation?
I hope I can do that...you can do that perfect...
+Ardian Gusfarianto thanks! It takes practice!
Are kicking on the back vs kicking on the stomach different? I find the underwater dolphin kick for backstroke harder than the normal underwater dolphin kick on the stomach. Do you have any tips for doing that? Also, when doing such kick, we should try not to over-undulate the arm and hand parts right? Are there just the core and the thigh that do the job? Thanks. :D
It is theoretically the same. Although you will have to blow air through your nose or use a nose clip. I use a nose clip and I find it easier to kick on my back but that is just because I practice it more often.
Kicking on the back, on the front, and kicking on side....
We need to consider the gravity force....
Training just on one side will result in imbalance between the muscles surrounding your join area.... that's not good.
So, we need to change the positions when we train kicks.
I know a guy who some how goes right to the bottom, and effortlessly glides through the water very fast while staying at the bottom the entire time. I don't know how he does it though.
Just like the man from Atlantis.
How could you swim with dolphin kick like backstroke? I got the water in my nose all the time. Do you have any tricks or excersices to improve it? Thanks alot
With a nose clip, covering it with my upper lip or blowing bubble all the way through
How to hold breath while being on the back underwater? Doesn't the water rush in the nostrils of you don't blow Air bubbles..??🤔
With a nose clip
Breaststroke? Or butterfly
I find it easier to do dolphin kicks on my back instead of my front, any help how I can improve my dolphin on my front?
I did too. It didn't makes sense to me since in theory it should be the same. So I just practice doing it on my front more and it helped, but I don't know what changed. Could you tell me why you struggle on your front more?
Whenever i try to do dolphin kicks on my front i cant really bend my hips as much as when Im on my back. And whenever i do dolphins on my front, it goes really slow.
This makes sense, it's supposed to be faster on your back. Not sure exactly why. That's why Ryan Lochte likes doing underwater dolphins on his back in the freestyle (called the "Lochte Turn").
Apparently its quite common, I feel the same too, my backstroke kick is also faster than my freestyle but I found this is similar in quite a few of my teammates too
Xenji
I can do this except the hand part:( I don't know why but if I have my hands as you show ( and I know that's correct what you are showing ) I feel like I am drowning I need to have my hands near my limbs PLS GIVE ME A TIP OR SMT😭
Oh cool he's a merman
Did you notice that from 1:20 his legs were red?!
looking so hard to me ...I can only do less than 5......
It's so tiring to kick off of every wall isn't it? Do you practice this on distance sets?
+David Kaufman it is! For distance I do two kicks
Ok I'll take your advise and try one off of each wall. thanks
Xao
Did you know making a streamline for a really long time it make your shoulders go up and it stay there in place so that's why most swimmers have bold shoulders *(man shoulders)or some people are already born like that lol
To practice underwater kick you should try swimming 25 yards of just underwater dolphin
I'll try that!
Guys I dont have a pool..I am practising in natural rivers
+Saitama Sensei I would advice not to do underwaters then 😂 That is cool though!
what about the breathing??? 😢
+Keyla acuña breathing is overrated 😜
Skills NT its difficult to exhale all the time while kicking underwater dolphin in backstroke, I can only do 4 kicks maximum 😅😓
+Keyla acuña yes is difficult to exhale all the time! I use a nose clip sometimes, that helps!
Skills NT I'll try thanks! 😉😉
How to get six pack abs
3:34: "Keep the stream line 2 second before first dolphin kick after turn" ?? Really, I thought that they have proven that the faster you start the kick the more velocity you keep. Please respond thanks much.
