    1. press chest down toward bottom of pool, starts wave motion
    2. press hips down
    3. press tops of feet down
    4. scull hands outward past shoulder line to support head position when breathing
    5. breath quick and drop head back down
    6. streamline to minimize drag, keep body line as high on surface, swimming thru smallest space, less drag
    7. decrease amplitude, minimal up and down, less space and less resistance/drag
    8. relax neck to mobilize shoulders
    9. relax hips (pike) increase rom

    I've been waiting for just this video! So many other CZcamsrs gloss over the basics of dolphin kick. It's not always intuitive for people like me who are learning this technique as an adult. Thanks for the clear, well-made video!

    Old school way of teaching the dolphin kick was that it all came from the waist down. Now, we know that the entire body is used to generate the wave and more power. I do all of my dolphin kick laps with a snorkel. Just easier for me. One length high amplitude and slow kick rate, and next length short amplitude and quick stroke rate. One thing I have never heard or seen in any video is how the breathing kick differs from the underwater and/or swimming kick. Breathing kick is higher amplitude than regular kick. At least part of this is due to not being able to totally engage the abs because you have to relax them as you inhale.

      Thank you for your comment. This video is specifically centered around breathing techniques without tools, with the aim of providing foundational insights. While tools can be useful, it's important to note that they can become a crutch if overly relied upon. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of learning how to scull, as it's a fundamental skill that contributes to overall technique and performance. The goal is to equip swimmers with strong, versatile skills. Thank you for engaging with our content! Best, Coach Mandy

      @@SWIMVICE One channel had an exercise about the dolphin kick where you kept your hands at your sides, and then breath, which helped learn the body wave action that generates the power in the dolphin kick. For reasons unknown, I don't have the power to be able to do that very well, and gas out after one length of the pool. Perhaps I need to practice that more.... I do liken the action to having a body like a steel ruler. Not rigid like a piece of steel bar, not loose like a string, but with some tension along the whole body. The body wave progresses from head and arm thrust, through the hips and out the feet, and if you have the ruler handing off the end of a table, it will twang/vibrate up and down, which is how this kick works.
      I have never understood the sculling action drills. I guess for treading water it is good. I suppose there are some that have difficulty with getting the 'feel' of the water. That seems to come without effort for me. I am one of those who, weather permitting, always have my hand out the car window feeling the air....

  • @apmcsilva

    What about the up kick part of the dolphin kick?

    • @Myce
      @Myce Před 3 dny

      Did you not hear her say every up motion is a natural consequence and every down is a forceful movement?

    • @apmcsilva
      @apmcsilva Před 3 dny

      @@Myce Well, it isn't at all clear whether she was referring to the upwards part of the kick or not. I think she was not. Besides, the swimmer in the video doesn't use the upwards kick for propulsion, she is totally relaxed, which is not the technique most videos and instructors preach. You can easily compare that kick with other instructional videos here on youtube and the difference is huge. Even if you're just beginning to learn, ignoring that upbeat of the kick will make it hard to progress later on...anyways, to each, its own!
