Honestly I feel like Tommy's view on the miltiary is colored by the German military. Here in Sweden at least the military is a bit harder to get into. Mainly because the funding is limited so they don't accept dumbasses.

Also about the university thing, I am 19 right now and I know exactly what I want. I am studying to become a historyteacher and I'm pretty sure it's a realistic thing to do. If you know exactly what to do and it's realistic you can go directly into uni and be fine.

well also the thing he mentioned about people not being real soldiers is fair. In history if the army is made up of new recruits and positioned far away from the frontlines or any other conflict. They tend to slacken a bit in discipline and in some cases believe an enemy will never come so why bother being a soldier. But at the same time I'm just a dumb ass who likes studying history and got this idea from there idk if it was a unit specific thing for him or not.
EDIT: you probably also already know this idk why I explained it. sorry T-T

3:00 I can attest to this. When I was a teenager I was dead set on getting a political science degree. Started going to college at 18 and realized I absolutely hated it. Dropped out two semesters in. Then for the next couple of years I wanted to be a teacher. Looked at options for school and realized I didn't care for that either. Then around 21 years old, I found a passion in culinary arts. I'm 26 now and I still have this interest (obsession really lol) with culinary arts. I'm certain I want to be in this line of work for the rest of my life. For real take some time for yourselves and actually think about what you want to do with the rest of your life. Not only will you save yourself time and money in your youth but also you'll gradually surround yourself with others and make friends that will help you achieve your goals.

EDIT: TLDR: You don’t need a set path when you get out of high school. You just need to try things out, and if you don’t enjoy that, then move on.
When I was around 17 we had this 2 month film course in Danish class, where we had to study and make our own documentaries (theme didn’t matter). Before this course, I thought I wanted to be an architect cause it seemed both stabile and interesting. But while we were making the film, I was talking with a close friend about how I’d always loved telling stories through film and editing, and how it could keep me up for hours at night. And he asked me why I didn’t pursue it then. I of course told him that jobs are limited and money is tight, so becoming an architect was better, even if I’d prefer to be a film photographer or editor. He convinced me of the exact thing that Tommy said. Pursue film making. Because even if you end up pay check to pay check for a good period of your life, at least you’re happy and motivated getting out of bed in the morning. So that’s what I’m gonna do. But that’s not my point here.
Last month, I volunteered for basic training in the military (4 months) starting in February. Not because I have any intention of staying. I’ll be applying to 2 film schools (and architecture school) in the summer. It’s really just to have that experience. And I would say that’s probably my ultimate advice for people coming out of high school. You don’t need to have a specific career goal in mind like I have. You don’t need to go to medical school right out of high school. What’s most important is that you try a lot of different things. See different places and different people. I’m only 20. I’ve worked as a graphic designer, a nursery assistant in a kindergarten, a waiter in a restaurant. In January I’m going to Kenya for some volunteering work and then into the military. Not one of these was planned more than a month before applying and I’m not planning to make any one of them a career. I just thought why not and went from there. So if your passion is telling stories like it is mine, then you better go look for some, or make some of your own. Because life is short, and once you start an education, it’s very easy to get bogged down thinking that’s your only path. And then it’s good to have some other experiences to draw from. That’s all I’ll say.

*The US army pays for college while you're in the service *Tuition Assistance is what its called or after 4 years of service the Gov pays for your college.

Left that job, looked for something else, and found one that pays a lot less but is much more fulfilling. Now I don't have as much money, but I don't hate every moment that I'm at work. Since you spend so much of your life working, that's super important. I wouldn't go back to that old job for anything.

Another thing is your passion can be applied to something more practical. I had to "learn to love" economics as part of my education because I knew it would be helpful. Through a love of learning history you can find a lot of economic education through a historical perspective and if you have good professors they can help you with that.

When i was 18 many of my school mates went to universities and got degrees and are now stuck in endless works schedules stressful jobs and regret their decision to go to universities.
I didnt go to a university neither did i join the military when i was 18 instead i started working intill i was 26 then i joined the navy served for a year and found it to be fun. I Sweden you serve at least 3-4 months of basic training then its up to you if wanna keep doing your service or go back to civilian life wich most of the conscripts/voluteers do. I stayed because as i said it was fun and i already had a job waiting for me when i got back. And just like Tommy i meet people who didnt like the military life and saw it as a waste of their time and i meet some who saw opportunities in the military. Just a warning(dont know if its the same in other countries.) in Sweden you can be employed in the military but only for 12 years if you not joining the officer corps that is. But i didnt stay in the military after one year. I have a civilian job that i work only part time. I dont really need to work full time. I rather spend the rest of the days with my family and friends. And in my line of work i meet new younger people all the time. Most of them goes to universities being push by their parents and the systematic promise of wealth by the universities to get a degree. But sitting down and spending time with my family and friends beats any money cars mansions and private jets in the world.

I was in the swiss military for 5 months, we have obligatory service over there. I mean i felt also most of the time that i did waste my time doing dumb shit. The thing is that as a soldier you need to follow and dont think too much. Thats why they make you "dumb", thats the purpose of "drill". If you think too much you are not a tool that can get used. I mean i made my truck driver licence over there and also from a mental and physical standpoint i did get mulitple times to my limit and even surpassed it, that was a very important live lasting experience. For example we walked with 30kg in the mountains(beautiful) on our body hours and hours and often i was at a point where i did think i couldnt anymore, but then i just keep on walking. That was a very valueable lesson for me personally. But yeah, in general there is a lot of waste of money and ressources and you are doing nothing or dumb shit and get paid for it(not much). Waste of gasoline, just driving around for fun or shooting tons of ammunition for no reason. From a societal perspective it is outrageous that so much money and brain power is getting wasted for months and from a personal experience, there is way better thing to do with your time, i mean yeah, you get fit, you get stronger mentally(not guaranteed) but you can do that also in a way more efficient way on your own i think. Get your education, go to the gym and challange yourself mentally and phisically, way better then going to the military!
