Camping on Top of an Abandoned Cold War Radar Base!

- In this episode we travel to the site of an abandoned radar base that would have monitored the skies listening for the first sign of a soviet nuclear attack launched against the United States. We set up camp on top of one of the massive radar towers and enjoy the incredible mountain views.

You aren't kidding when you say you are the proper people. Everything about your channel is proper and professional.
It's unfortunate they aren't honest and professional about their videos. Pretending to be trespassing when they have permits to film at each and every location. :(
Andrew Shegda don’t really matter much, so long as they get good footage I’m happy
@@Alandric1911 and you know this how? Oh, okay you're omnipotent, sorry.
@@Alandric1911 Well they don't because they get caught by security in some of their videos and escorted out in one. Besides, if you are exploring the sites professionally, you really should be getting permission to do so.
except for the part where they break into buildings that dont belong to them and ruin everyone elses chances of doing the same thing by posting it on youtube and getting the places locked down.... thats not very "proper" at all.
The production quality and camera shots on these videos is something I only see on TV channels. These guys deserve much better than CZcams who sadly demontizes their terrific content!
Surya Komal wait they can't make money?
K2 Mally Most of their videos are getting demontised. Patreon and sponsorships are helping them.
This could easily be on Netflix/Amazon...
Hey, NETFLIX and AMAZON!
What's the reason youtube are demonetising their content? I really do hate youtube in many many ways. It is about time a real contender came on the scene to give them serious competition and a run for their money (no pun intended).
+Dan Gruner because they are trespassing. CZcams aren't going to be caught "promoting " illegal activities. That's just a dumb business decision.
Wow, sure brings back the memories. In the early 60s, I was a USAF radar tech
(Heavy Ground Radar). Did my job in and around towers just like these. The high
light (or maybe LOW light) of my service was a year tour at Cape Newingham, AK.
Six guys up on the mountain with the Radar Set connected by a tram car to 100+
troops down in the valley. Incoming aircraft when the weather allowed - i.e. RARELY.
Way, way isolated from the real world!! Thank goodness we were never needed to
sound the WWIII alert...................
Skip school in 97-98 to go here for day. Such a great memory and adventure
Where is it
@@MaxCydiaHelp Look up East Mountain in Northern Vermont. This is actually a really popular place to hike. I've gone twice this summer, and it's absolutely stunning!
Andrew Carden that’s quite a long hike! Can you still bring cars up there?
@@Taylor-mt9pc if you have a vehicle that can go for some off-road driving, yes! Right after the administration section, there if a massive oil tank and pile of rocks blocking the road (put in a few years ago). To get by, you just need to drive around it.
Otherwise, it's an hour and half hike up, hour back.
Just went there after school with some friends.
Expertly done, great video guys!
love your vids man you guys should collab!
Bright Sun Films indeed you guys should do a collab, you make amazing documentary type video's and the explore the abandoned building. Would be awesome seeing you guys together

What's up jake
Bright Sun Films great video ✌️
The aerial perspective in that sunset shot at 18:56 was incredible
You could flag down a Jet with that light, I never saw one bounce off a cloud bank that wasn't a searchlight before.
it is a search light
That light is fucking insane
There also higher up to the clouds
this was awesome love the views!

Devon Flynn only? That's a lot more followers than most of those other exploration channels....
I’ve been watching your stuff for awhile now. So much quality content! You leave things the way you found them, give history on the subjects and the visuals are spectacular.
After watching this at least 4 or 5 times, I have to say, this is my favorite video of yours so far. It's got a road trip, off- roading action and an insane spot. Makes me want to grab a friend and my jeep and go up north.
Thanks for all your vids. Inspiring and addictive.
This episode should have been sponsored by Toyota.
well pretty perfect choice for this kind of thing :).
_Toyota - the best car for illegally trespassing dangerous territory..._
Nah, I don't think they would... xD
Legality is mostly subjective anyways ;)
Definitely good publicity for Toyota
Or sponsored by Caterpillar
imagine living near there and looking out your window at night and just seeing a guy waving a super powerful flashlight around like a lightsaber
Yea I was thinking about the same thing. Closest buildings are about 6-8 miles away, so they could definitely see that.
Those drone shots keep getting better, great work!
For anyone going up there, warnings first: the road is blocked from the lower base to the upper base because of injuries and a death from falling. Second, last time I was there, huge pile of bear crap behind the motor pool, so keep mindful of bears. Lastly, nothing should happen, but some people do take guns up there for shooting, so also be mindful of that.
That said, it's a pretty cool place to visit, and the views from the top are amazing. There's also a great campsite at the base of the towers, protected from the wind. Just be careful, those buildings have had a zero maintenance and are crumbling. This also means that there's asbestos, so don't go poking around in rubble. If you need an ambulance, it's over an hour away, so you're on your own.
Finally, for anyone into UFO stuff, this place figures into the Betty and Barney Hill abduction in 1961.
Todd M where is this, because the bettey and Barney hill abduction was 15 min from my house
Good lookin out
Do you know if people can still visit this base? Last summer I drove to that gate in the road, but it said private property, so I didn't want to trespass.
This is in Vermont right? I should have went when I lived in Lebanon NH
@@caitlyn9451The gate is not locked. As there are several camps and a gravel pit up there that was being used when I went. I actually talked to the lady at the house next to the gate and she said it's to help keep people out. She said if I did go up, not to enter the buildings because it would be trespassing. She also told me her husband and a few others go up and weld, and close off the entrances every year. People keep breaking into them. So if you do go don't have hopes to get in, because there's a chance you won't be able to. It's also a heck of a steep hike if you park at the bottom. The day I went people were shooting at the bottom were I left my car. I didn't stay long at the top and hurried back down. I did find bullet casing next to my car that were not there before. I'm just glad whoever it was didn't shoot my car. If you do go, I suggest to go as a group.
Been up there many times. Grew up in the 80's just down the road (8 miles or so) in the town of Victory
Fun fact : The hells angels used to party at this location back in the day,
....I know someone commented and asked if there’s hells angels in Europe...no idea bud, but this is located in Vermont, bout 20 mins away from me
I also think they owned this location at one point...not to sure, just stories I heard from friends

Once again, another ''Proper'' video to bless you tube. I'm not joking, there's not a lot of channels out there that get me excited when they post a video. The way that your videos are made just catches my attention. I appreciate the edits that go into this. Editing is not so fun sometimes. Thanks for another video!

Some of the best content I’ve seen on CZcams. You all deserve a lot more recognition!
The drone shots, the offroading, the sunset, the night shots, the flashlights, this video is definitely one of my favorites of yours! Awesome job!!
You've put a lot of time and effort into this video and it shows. From your shots (I loved how you shot the 4Runner navigating around that roadblock) to the use of historical photos and footage, to the VO, this is a polished production. Probably one of your best so far. I know that you can't do this level of production on every video, but I hope you can pull of something like this maybe once a quarter? There are some places that are just cool to watch people explore, and then there are places that really demand an explanation of their history and context -- those are the places that interest me, and I appreciate your taking the time to make videos like this.
Once we finish with school we're going to put all our focus on the channel and hopefully every video will be at this production level. That's still another year out though so until then 1 vid like this a quarter seems like a reasonable goal.
Love this place, the cameras don't do it justice when you go in person and can see everything for 50+ miles in each direction. I'll never forget waking up on the third floor of the main tower with my friends and realizing we were completely engulfed in clouds. At night you can see a wind farm off in the distance and physically watch the electrical current go across it's entire grid via their red lights. This is seriously one of the most underrated spots in the northeast you can go to and I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates a beautiful view. Great vid as always guys.
This site should be turned into a windfarm!!!!!
Holy shit, I grew up 40 minutes from here, never knew of it growing up. I’ll be back there later this month and will check it out.
This was absolutely amazing. Love the views. Just gorgeous. This was a great video.
A shot from miles and miles away of you guys shining that bright ass flashlight would have been gnarly!!
Yeah should have put their drone up and filmed the flashlight from afar :)
I'm a Vermonter, I've been up to that site too many times to count. You have to go back during the Fall and the winter.
Vermont here too, but never knew of this place. Is it in NEK?
@@SMac-bq8sk Yeah, on East mountain.

Awesome, and amazing video.
You guys should consider bringing MRE's for food.
P.s. i miss the old intro music. Its so awesome.
They use the 'new music' specifically for the forbidden explorers series, every other video still has the original intro.
RedPuma90 ahh, good to know. Thanks for the info!
Man, if you think you’re gonna burn those many calories go ahead. MREs are packed with them and designed to be eaten throughout the day. Also, enjoy the magical farting magic they produce. Sincerely, retired military sergeant.

This video inspired some friends and I to camp here as well it’s was an amazing trip with some of the best views I’d ever seen. Sunrise was the best part. Thank you guys for a great video and a great trip idea.

I live in Vermont, but never really looked into abandon places nearby. Really interesting. Been wanting you guys to do a VT episode for a while (if you did any others, I missed it). So glad you guys came to this little state.
I live out in California now, but my parents live literally about 6 miles away from that site.
Hello to both you guy's. I've lived here just a few miles from the radar base all my life. In fact this town was first named Hartwellville (after my relatives) then changed to E--- H----. As a kid I would climb up the mountain with my friend's. Of course back then it was beautiful. Way before the biker gang's H---'- A----- and other's destroyed most of it. I have read some of the comment's and most of them are very kind but some seem to be casting doubt's on your story. What you said was very true. Back in the late 1950's and Early 1960's The Development was built. My dad helped to build the town's houses that are at the bottom of the Mountain. Yes the base is all the way to the top much like any military base it was called ''THE RADAR BASE'' And YES it was at it's time our nation 1st line of defence. It look's like you took the outer way to get to the split in the road. But as you said after that their is only one way to go. As far as the distance for me from my back yard I'd just go into the wood's and walk up the mountain. Way back when I was a young kid e- s----- owned it and it was much easier to scout the area. There's much more than just the radar base to see. A big thank's for you video, it was great!
Wow.
I am blown away by the talent you two have. Your videos are AMAZING!! The views are breathtaking!
This is my favorite, of all your trips! A most awesome adventure, thank you!
