  • Finding parking is always a hassle, but perfectly parallel parking? That seems almost impossible.
    If you street park a car in a large city, you may dread every time you switch on your blinkers and start to back up. So, in order to ease all this pain and frustration, we teamed up with our dear friends at Jalopnik to put together this easy video guide on how to parallel park like a pro.

    For me, perfect parallel parking happens when there are no other cars within a one-mile radius of me. I park along the curb in no time flat....perfectly.

    Following these instructions exactly cleared up my problem! I've had a mental block against parallel parking since having a bad experience with a driving instructor. I parallel parked fine with my first driving instructor who was super chill, but then my second class I had a different instructor who spent most of the 2 hours yelling at me and making me extremely nervous. He would have me do a slow lap around a parking lot...then make me attempt to parallel park, then berate me for not doing it correctly... and then have me do another slow lap with another attempt to parallel park and some more berating. Since then parallel parking has stressed me out so much that I have very rarely tried and very rarely been successful! This was so helpful!

    • @samuelkamochu6808
      @samuelkamochu6808 Před 3 lety +8

      Anatomy Hero, you allowed him to get into your nerves and turned you into a lifetime nervous wreck. You should have told him that he's barking at you was not helpful, or just got out of the car and reported him to the owner of the driving school.

    • @AnatomyHero
      @AnatomyHero Před 3 lety +35

      @@samuelkamochu6808 I think calling someone a lifetime nervous wreck because they didn't learn to parallel park at 16 and felt nervous about trying because they hadn't ever been really taught... Might be just a tad of an overly judgemental statement. I don't really live somewhere where parallel parking is a necessary skill. Also, I'm not really sure why you're assuming I didn't complain about the guy!
      I was just giving a slightly humorous and hyperbole tinged anecdote...but ok then, let me know if there's anything else I could have done better at 16 😂 (hint: The answer is most things... I could have done most things better at 16)

    • @janbo8331
      @janbo8331 Před 3 lety +1

      That sucks. It's good if you can overwrite whatever the douche tried to teach, too. There's plenty of ways one can parallel park a car. Perhaps you have some natural way you were never allowed to try, or perhaps you will find one technique better than the other. The instructor was just trying to teach his way. Personally I found parallel parking laborious and nervy business while in driving school, but after getting to be alone in the car and going about it my way it has always felt good. For example, I rarely even use mirrors. I just watch through the back window, in some tight spots might look through mirrors or even hang my head out of the door. Stuff like that would never go in driving tests, but it's worked great for me for well over a decade.

      the trick is to get the back of your car flush to the rear car and near the curb/kerb first while the front of your car, even at an angle, fits in the space. This gives you a lot of headroom to adjust going forward. Otherwise when you straighten your car, you'll be far removed from the curb/kerb. Once you have it flush you can fit it perfectly with a few moves, first steer right and move forward until your bumper is a few inches from the front car, then steer left back move forwards and voila, even the tightest space is achievable once you understand you have maneuvering room once you're inside the space.

      @Lateisha M most channels are good for preparing people for the exams but as an experienced driver, I recently had to teach my girlfriend who has a license but parks like crap, I found out that his videos are most suitable in real world scenarios. It helped my gf visualize her mistakes before going out to practice. The exam teaches you to do it in one swoop but in real life that almost never works because some people park horribly, at an angle or away from the kerb and most of the time the space is quite tight so adjustments are required for parking

    I just came back to say I've been using your method to parallel park 3 times after watching this video-I've been parked in 10 seconds top using this method, it's unreal!
    To people who might doubt the usefulness of the straight back part of the video (where he straightens the wheel while going in reverse position), that step is crucial because turning the wheel doesn't move the wheel close to the curb, if at all. If you simply turn the wheel then do the other adjustment without first straightening, the wheel close to the curb will stay where it is. Straightening the wheel is how you get that week to actually move close to the curb.
    It's a no-brainer when you think of it, but when parking, you might not immediately see the usefulness of that step, and likely end up wondering why your parallel keeps being so wide from the curb

    Good video. I was a little frustrated because I thought the most critical part of the maneuver is watching the car behind in the rear view get to the perfect position. You seemed to edited that precise moment out. You said we need to be able to see half of it. Do you mean half of the front of the car or half of it's complete image. Because you didn't show that moment I'm unclear. Otherwise, very good video.

    A car equipped with 360 degree cameras with top and side views make this so easy! Even better, a car with autonomous parking program. However, I must agree with other commenters on the subject of parking in downtown, heavy traffic, narrow two-way street areas, etc.

    I just pick establishments that have their own parking lots (perks of living in the suburbs)! 😂
    I learned parallel parking from a road test point of view, cones and no car behind me in traffic. In real life, I don’t see why I must pick a place in the downtown of a city and sweat over parallel parking with impatient honkers behind me, when I can go to another equally good place in the suburbs. 😉

    I like this pattern more than many of the others that have you park way too far away from the front vehicle. I find that the closer I get to the front car the better it goes, within reason of course. But I usually use my panel behind the back wheel well as my gauge for how far to pull forward, not my bumper. Not sure why, just works better. But it makes likfe a whole lot easier not being limited to pull-in parking spaces only.

    Thisb shot a good way yall. Put the back of the car you wanna park behind in the middle of your back window. Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Behind to back up. Look in the rear view mirror(outside your window closest ti the curb. Once you get at a distance where you think you will be able to straighten out the car without hitting the curb then starts steering left until you car is straight. Drive up for 3 seconds slowly and put the car and park. When trying to get out, back up for 3 seconds slowly and signal to get out the parking spot.

  • @tonysea9724
    @tonysea9724 Před 3 lety +20

    This is OK however, I learnt with a vehicle without power steering, so a "dry turn" as shown here is near impossible, you need to keep moving to turn the steering.
    Start from position would be the same, but you need to start moving back and turning the wheel at the same time, as you get the vehicle needing to be on the opposite lock, the vehicle has to keep moving as you quickly roll the steering, and then before you hit the vehicle behind you need to roll the steering back to the right hand lock so you have maximum pull in available, then as you move forward, you unwind the lock so you end up in the centre of the space with all wheel straight. Simple.
