Thank you for a fair and informative assessment of Fedora 37 and Ubuntu 22.10. Unfortunately Fedora 37 has dropped support for popular video codecs with no viable solution for re-enabling Mesa hardware acceleration in Fedora 37 and Fedora 36, thankfully Ubuntu 22.10 has not chosen to go that route. Perhaps you could provide us with a video showing us how Mesa harware acceleration can be re-enabled in Fedora 37 and Fedora 36? This only effects AMD and Intel based GPU's. It's painful to watch youtube load so slowly now. Thanks again!

This is 11 minutes of filler to reach the 10min+ mark for monetization. Cliffnote: There are some legal issues causing built-in support to be dropped, but there are ways to add it back in and other distros that don't care or don't feel they have the same legal exposure. Just how it is.

The "better driver support" on AMD is just a myth, that is absolutely false.
Of course a lot of people will probably say that I'm wrong here, but won't provide any proof, because there isn't any.
Please don't believe anyone but your own experience, unless they provide actual proof.
The problems I had been having with both a RX 580 and a 5700XT on Arch Linux, in both games and ffmpeg, couldn't be solved in any way.
My AMD APU with R7 integrated graphics doesn't even get proper accelerated graphics.
My GTX 750 Ti, GTX 960, GTX 1050 Ti and RTX 2070 are perfectly fine.

I don't think that's a misunderstanding. Nvidia GPU are indeed lack of support on all BSD except FreeBSD and it's derivative and it's driver can't be executed on musl based Linux distros and user get forced to used nouveau driver on those and might not be able to get to desktop at all in many BSD OS. And I still don't count some obscure distro that go out of their way to make sure only free software can be installed. And also there's an issue of too old driver for too old Nvidia card might not be able to get their driver compiled with new kernel at all (I'm not sure). That's mean AMD card are always have better support on Linux. But that's just the overall picture. On the other hand how AMD using mesa driver means AMD card lacked support from AMD itself that make sure all functionality works. So we can't exactly say that AMD card have better support in all objective sense but can't say they're worse either as some OS in this circle only have AMD to be a viable option due to their policy on free software ideology and I think those OS user are the one affected the most on this issue.

@@Melody666 Umm. It's like what it supposed to be. CZcams can played fine. H.264 video I download from questionable site also run fine if it's full HD or lower. And that VGA card is the crappy old card like HD 5870 which didn't has encoder and decoder in the first place and nvidia Quadro 5000 which even with proprietary driver doesn't support hardware acceleration at all. I can edit H.264 video on program that support no problem except in Davinci Resolve, that program can't playback in it at all but it's supposed to use with newer hardware in the first place as it's need hardware acceleration just to run video sequence in it (if I don't have hardware acceleration the program will freeze when imported some footage let alone edit it). Overall maybe hardware encoder might not even important in the first place. I tried editing video in Davinci Resolve with Radeon R9 Fury X on Rocky Linux before this whole ordeal come out and everything seem to work perfectly fine, that's mean hardware acceleration was working just right.
I still didn't test run some video editor in something like Parabola or OpenBSD yet so I can't exactly say what it's like to work on them.

@@TheCommonSenseForRegularPeople Aside from games, there's still better reasons to stick to Linux distros, and depending on your usage, Mac is probably one of the worst in hardware support.
In DJing, latest Macs don't work well with DJ gear, especially older DJ hardware. Yet, it tends to work perfectly fine in Windows and Linux. You'll see it all over the place in Reddit's r/DJ.
Mac seems to drop support for older hardware, while Linux seems to maintain support via open source drivers. Once a patent expires, or software becomes vaporware, it's an open playing field.
Also, being able to boot Linux on any hardware (except M1 and M2), is a blessing. If you had to borrow someone's computer or laptop, you don't need to bother booting into their OS. Just boot Linux from an external M2, and use your personal settings and programs, and it's a done deal. I almost never have to bring a laptop anywhere I go these days, especially for work.

@@luja805 Oh I understand how good Linux is, believe me. I use Linux at work, also used desktop Linux for 5+ yrs (left Windows in 2016). But it's goodness is everywhere except at desktop/laptop.
It's not bad, just hit or miss depending upon hardware and I am tired of doing troubleshooting and tinkering. OS is just a tool to do some productive work, any OS can do it. If someone doesn't value for time, they can use Gentoo or Arch. If someone value for time or doesn't care about learning advanced things about OS, then why go beyond known territory (Win/Mac). I ain't a person who boots into Linux (or any OS) and stare at the screen and doing nothing like /r/unixporn users.
I don't do any DJ, video or graphics work. I am a console gamer. So my use-case doesn't need specific OS . I play only one PC game - Football Manager and it sucks on Linux (the latest one).
However the main reason behind going full apple is seamless convenience. After fully migrating to Apple eco-system over the last 10 months I experience what tech convenience is and I am happy with my choice. Mac studio for my software development, macbook air for travel purpose, iPad for leisure, iphone - all are seamlessly connected for continuity purpose and damn, it is good! I could have gotten similar convenience in Samsung eco-system but I don't like Google, so Apple it is. Zero regret.
Moreover, I never spent a single dollar on software since Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Firefox and many more FOSS software work flawlessly in ARM-Mac.
For hardware support, till now, Apple supported every Mac for at least 5-7 years, so I am expecting 5 years of life out of my ARM macs too which is fine for me.
