When David Beckham joined LA Galaxy in 2007, the wheels were already set in motion. A clause included in his contract with the MLS club stated that he would later be able to buy the rights to an expansion team for $25m, a significant discount from the normal fee of $150m.
Beckhamâs vision was in place. In the years to come he gradually set about making his dream a reality, laying the foundations for a new franchise. It took patience, but in March 2020, his Inter Miami team finally took to the pitch for their first ever MLS match.

David Beckham is probably the best thing that ever happened to the MLS (in terms of publicity)
He really was. The Beckham effect was real. Only several years before came, the league had contracted and lost two teams. Now it's been growing ever since. Now obviously alot of that is due in large part to the league's officials' and owners' hard work. But Beckham definitely played a major role in the league's visibility and in showing other footballers that MLS could be a place they could play.
Much as I booed him whenever we played against LA, what Beckham did for the MLS and American soccer in general is undeniable.
To quote Rafa Benitez, that's a fact.
Even with all the amazing shit he achieved in European football, his greatest legacy could very well end up being his influence on the MLS... or those underwear ads đ
Aden Sun easy
Thank you for using different colours for background rather than the white. It feels better on the eye.
Istiaq Ahmed !!!
I only noticed now that i saw your comment! It is better tho'. agreed
It gives it that "Miami" vibe. The bright colors and stuff from the 80s when Miami had it's golden age, at least in my opinion
@@Thatguyinyourclass If that's what they were going for, then they might go back to their usual background colour đ
Funny how here in Brazil several football trials to the MLS have appeared. All over the major cities there are news of trials for teenagers to try and get recruited by MLS teams. Nice to see they are reaching for young talent too, as Latin America has huge potential to bring in talent that is otherwise drawn to other markets, such as Europe or Asia.
It's great to see teams reaching further. It's made our league grow and really improved our standard of play. I wish they would focus a little more on local development and encouraged promotion from within youth academies more, but that's not a problem unique to us in any way.
@@thomasthatsit I can understand since its a growing market. They have to attract big names, star power, and increase the quality of play via foreign signings, to attract viewers, generate TV revenue and to assure investors. Once that process is stable I'm sure we'll start seeing room for local talent to rise. It's about time the U.S got into football.
@@TTGHAST I for sure agree. I think the focus on college athletics is a problem for our youth development as well. It's hard to justify signing and focusing on a rookie 22 year old when there's 19 year old Argentine kids with 3 years of first team experience and a vice captaincy under their belt already.
@@thomasthatsit Well, that's part of a different culture, in Europe, depending on the country, a lot of the big talents make their first appearance at age 16 or 17. But then again we don't do scholarships at college for being good at a sport. Or really do college sports. In Europe it's simple: If you're good enough you're old enough. US players like Reyna or Pulisic came to Europe when they were 16 if they have a European passport, and are usually thrown in the deep end quite quickly. I'm not sure the US teams can ever get on the same level as the South American or European teams, mainly because Football in the US is an afterthought.
People just want to go to america flat out the only reason
As a lifelong Miami resident, we've been waiting so long for this club and have heard so many times it wouldn't happen. And then we finally got it, I got season tickets, we were literally 48 hours away from the first home game, and then the COVID-19 lockdowns began! We are cursed! Lol
I just want to see football in Miami please! There is always a roadblock.
Florida Panthers: Am I a joke to you?
Me: Yes, but at least you have a better chance at filling your arena than the Marlins do.
Flordians dont even know what they want
Rutted Panda I like the Marlins
Rutted Panda what???
Rutted Panda Iâm also from Florida it is
Marlins and the Mariners are the most irrelevant teams in the MLB no cap inter Miami and the Sounders are more relevant than they are no cap
Love when Tifo gets into North American soccer content. I'd love to see vids in the future on the rise and fall of the old NASL and even the launch of the CanPL, Canada's first Division 1 league since 1992.
Nice to see an MLS video. Can you make a video on the Save the Crew movement and how the entire MLS pitched in to prevent the Columbus Crew from being forced to move the Austin?
As a Toronto FC Supporter, remember our supporter section chanting "SAVE THE CREW" in solidarity with you. Glad it worked out so TFC can continue to destroy your Hope's and dreams for years to come :)
@@69gvfb I'm not a Crew fan, and the team I support is in the Western Conference, so I dont really care if the Crew lose. But as an MLS fan, but I would have been really sad if the Crew moved. The passion for the team just instantly dies.
The Crew and my team Sporting should both never move. They were both originally owned by the hunt family and were original members of the MLS.

It shows in his personality after football exactly what he was like as a player... he's such a hard working lad all day he was up and down that right side such a grafter and people forget that . Every single lad on the play ground wanted to be David Beckham at dinner time the bloke was pure class .
His clause was genius
His vision is not normal
I think he brought advertising and sponsorship to next level
He launched indirectly messi and ronaldo big sponsor deals
Well he launched the template for Ronaldo to go on and be a footballing celebrity and a brand.
I agree, I was already thinking un his franchise way back in 2007
"That Inter Miami emerged despite the difficulties" is testament to how badly MLS wants/needs the Beckham brand attached to theirs; they'd have told any other prospective owner to get bent after so many years of delays and failures, even if they were paying full price for a franchise
Or that Miami is the perfect place for a soccer franchise and MLS needed to honor their promise to Beckham when he came to the league?
Um, there was a contract obligating MLS to this. While they couldve told Beckham to find another city, one way or another MLS was obligated to include Beckham as an owner
As a Miami native, weâre genuinely excited about Inter Miami. Having a new shot with a good franchise with lots of local fan and financial backing is extremely exciting. Soccer in Miami with such a diverse population is more than overdue. As for the competing local teams, absolutely no one cares about the Marlins, thereâs a portion of a John Boiâs (SBNationâs Pretty Good) that calculates the crowd in attendance being negative considering the average amount of staff needed to run a stadium. The Panthers have their own cult following but are in the middle of nowhere Sunrise. The Dolphins have unironically only made the playoffs four times this millennium and have only won one playoff game. I get the history but they truly are a mistake. And thank the Heat for being the only team in town to have loyal supporters. Besides the Miami Hurricanes collegiate football team. But even they lost to FIU in the past year and have been mediocre bar 2017 since their golden era of the 80s-2000s. VĂĄmos Inter Miami and I will most certainly make it to the rescheduled home opener.

Rodolfo Lopez lol. shitty ownership. Got rid of all their good players also the death of Jose Fernandez set them back. Donât forget two time World Series Champs.
@@ranoldomuir9156 Shitty ownership has definitely hit the Marlins like a ton of bricks in attendance. Even in an stadium half the size of Marlins Park, Inter Miami are probably on track to have a higher average attendance than the Marlins had last season.

This video got me a little emotional. As a Miami Sports Fan and knowing how close this was to not happening at all, Miami is now one of 11 markets across North America with teams in MLS, MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL (panthers play in Miami-FTL suburb called Sunrise). There is going to be a lot of local competition among sports teams and night life/beaches when things go back to normal. However, Miami is one of the perfect markets in MLS because of their geographical connection to Latin America. Many Europeans love Miami as well. If I had to bet, a new stadium in Miami will happen, but idk how Corona virus could affect things. I personally like the FTL Lockhart Stadium cause I live about 20 minutes away from there as opposed to 45 min from Downtown Miami. But many citizens in Miami do not share my same viewpoint lol. Thank you tifo for a class video about my community and its newest team. We cannot WAIT for MLS to resume.
Still glad I bought season tickets. As a strikers fan (defunct) it makes me happy to have a team I can support locally again
Well, they have definitely signed their star now. Good for Beckham and his franchise
Ahhh finally some audio
Beckham's franchise can only be good for MLS - America needs thse high profile endeavours and investments for the wider public to take notice of it, as it's not ingrained in their culture like it is in the UK.
It doesn't fix the biggest issue with US Soccer, which is a backwards, outdated youth coaching philosophy, and the bias towards expensive pay to play youth teams and leagues, but it might be enough to get people with the right ideas interested so they can make real change.
MLS will become like the NFL if it manages to succeed in America with their profit first, sport later policy. Don't get me wrong, PL has this problem too but it is much more apparent in America, especially American sports Every time there is a match on the tv, 5-10 minutes 5/5 ads will be shoved on your tv screen. And with America SJW, political correctness and socialism will ruin the game especially with the women's game, USWNT crying about their pay gap, etc. We don't have any female player crying about not being paid as much as the male because they know that the female league is not very popular and in demand as much as the male league. So I'm quite happy that the MLS is not getting the recognition like the PL does, just my own opinion.
The American closed league system will never be able to rival any established European league in this lifetime and the next.
@@JAREDPLY1 and they even have no relegation system
Iâm England playing for a club up until 18 years old is either completely free or like 90+% of the cost is subsidised by the Football Association which means any child can play football regardless of their financial situation
You forgot about another bump in the road. Inter Milan is suing Inter Miami over their naming rights and are in danger of losing their name
It is a complete rip off. Anyone with a brain in the company should have approached Inter Milan first to find out if using the "inter" part of their name is acceptable. Clearly it isn't. For that reason they will lose the Inter part of their name of the club. Perhaps just call it MIAMI FC
@@79mjm79 The suing makes no sense, the name "Inter" is used in a lot of countries, like for example "Sport Club Internacional from Porto Alegre" , "FK Inter Bratislava" or "NK Inter Zapresic".
@@79mjm79 Miami fc already exists.
I wish Beckham and Inter Miami all the best.
Real ones were here when the video had no audio
Well I guess I'm a real one then
I'm unreal
Miami's one of my favorite cities and they definitely have a great soccer culture there. I hope they're able to get out of FLL and into the city limits!
A few additional things to add:
Lockhart Stadium, where Miami was going to have their home games, was literally a dump after Hurricane Irma. That is where they put a lot of debris.
The city of Miami wasn't going to contribute a cent because they got a really bad deal with the baseball team and their stadium.
Why would anyone expect the city to contribute? Just curious. But most stadiums in Europe are built by and owned by clubs.
In America cities pay to build stadiums.what a follish thing to do.sometimes franchises abandon the stadium and the taxpayers get screwed with an abandoned stadium
If it is about money he surely drop this project but as world know beckham is most hardworking and never giveup type personality. I hope his frenchise would be successful.
You did Cavani dirty with that picture hahaha
Great Sound! Haha great video
Day 4 of asking Tifo to make a video on the 1991/92 Leeds side that won the league a season after being promoted
I adore the coloring of the video.
You didn't mention how Inter Milan went to the court because of the Inter part of the club's name
That was just embarrasing
Maybe they should sue Inter Allies of Ghana or the team Internacional in Porto Allegre got their name from

Is Real Salt Lake part of it as well? I would say that the Utah identity is important to it, as well as the Utah Jazz.
Big inter Miami fan from Miami.
Heâs done alright! The lad from Leyton !

Just Beckham playing Football Manager, on a whole another level
I personally like Miami being in the MLS; not only the first iteration failed and the Tampa Bay Mutiny also failed as a team. So to have a team besides in Orlando (which are bottom table for the most part) would bring an interest and spice to the league. Yet to also echo someone else in the comments, to say the Marlins are a draw are laughable and you have to be good in order for people to see you or make a huge splash. Inter Miami has to be good and constantly in order to get a following.
the Fusion actually won the Supporters Shield in there last season and only got Kicked Out because they lost the Semi Final to San Jose in which the loser got kicked out of the league
You have to take your hat off to him for that clause in his contract. 25 Million for rights to a club. Wow. What an incredible business move 10+ years later. Unbelievable to me.

The problem is that much of the locals don't go to games in the NBA, Baseball, or Football. Miami has always had this problem, fans just don't show up to games. And i fully 100% expect this to be the case with Inter Miami.
Iâve never heard anything good be said about the Marlins before...
Excited to see how inter Miami shakes up the MLS. With someone like Beckham at its helm, its future looks promising
I'm not sure, he has no experience in this part of the job, so why it looks promising is beyond me.
Inter Miami is and will forever been known as a hilarious name.
Cavani is a great idea! Forza Napoli!
Why didnt they asked Jorge Mendes to do this deal? It would be done in 2 days and Miami even would have to pay for beckam

Whether you love him or hate him, you can't deny his work ethic is the envy of many.
He's among a very few people I strive to be when it comes to hard work and determination and I'm not even a die hard football fan especially now as I've started up my own sporting venture that I believe can change the game of Touch Football forever.
It does feel like a very interesting project. Great location if you are going to attract fresh latin american stars that haven't left for europe yet. And also great if you are going to attract some key stars of european football. You also don't want to displace what is already there, talking of other sports. You just want to enhance the sporting activity of the city. Maybe even bring over latin youth from the city to the academies there. And slowly start making it a thing. I also liked the fact that he didn't use the same pale blue colours the rest of Miami teams have , it doesn't look good on a football shirt.
I liked his colours , i liked the name of the club. Big shame he couldn't get the waterfront stadium idea to life , it sounds so key to the project...
Who else read that as Inter MILAN instead of inter Miami đđđ dyslexia is killin me rn
That's why inter Milan want to take them to court.
abdi libaax They actually already did take them to court a judge granted the sue a go-ahead as the similarity in names has merit to be a potential copyright infringement (Inter Milan has patented their name in the US). My best guess is that they will reach an agreement at some point by Miami paying a fee for the name.
Beckham is a smart guy.
Well done beck! đđŸ
Donât they have a lawsuit with Inter Milan over name trademark?

1:16 All he needed to do was convince the world's second-largest cruise line to demolish their corporate headquarters
That may not be so difficult if the cruise industry takes a big hit as a result of the current crisis. Between people balking are going on cruises and the US potentially cracking down on the tax dodge of registering ships in other countries (but basing them in the US), the cruise industry will take xx a real hit.
Business struggles when everyone is finally back to work may mean a much better opportunity for a downtown stadium than before.
@@3Dsjk It may not be difficult anymore today, but back in 2015, Royal Caribbean was one of South Florida's corporate giants. It doesn't matter anymore because Inter Miami already owns land next to the airport. They'll build the stadium there once the land is decontaminated and their Ft. Lauderdale stadium is set to become their training ground.
@@3Dsjk Cruise ships will become even more popular after this whole situation the same with buying holiday homes. Cruise ships are taking a hit now but will rise hugely again.

As a guy who loves football and is from the deep south. (The Florida part of it) I am proud that football is making some setting stones. Tho if you want a youth academy you are going to have to overtake college American football so that is going to be though. And with the shit going on with him that is to be another 5000 to 1 chance. From what I read Inter Miami is interested in James Rodriguez. Honestly, that would be great for the franchise due to James' popularity with Colombians (where there are many in Miami) and he is a star still in his prime. The question is whether James will come or not
He's too big and in his prime to play in a mediocre league

Do you remember the days when all your favourite journalists wrote articles you could read easily and for free? Well we're going to get all those journalists and put them behind a paywall so now your everyday fan can't afford to go to the game, can't afford to pay for Sky Sports and can't afford to read good sport journalism because a company from another country has gathered up all the half decent journalists and monetised them. Welcome to the Athletic.
KGBgringo remember when you had to buy a magazine subscription to read articles? Money has to come from somewhere. If you want high-quality sports journalism there needs to be more money in it than just a banner ad on a site, especially with all the ad-blocking software out there. Free, cheap content? Try barstool... funny stuff there but not the quality of true professional Journalists.
So where was the money coming from before? When we were all able to read their stories for free?
Yiur argument is what companies like this want you to believe, "we're charging to make it better" meanwhile nothing has changed apart from we have to pay to read these journalists now rather than advertising paying for us to read it.
Yeah I remember buying magazines when they had the cost of printing, publishing and distributing a magazine to cover while the advertising in the magazine paid the journalists. Then the internet came along and we didn't need to pay for printing, publishing and distribution anymore but for some reason the Athletic think the magazine model is a good one for the internet, it's onky good for their bank account and not the real fans of the clubs.
Did Inter Miami fans make it to the stadium by halftime?
I predict they will sign Messi.

So he did all this just to have a club that will be under water in a couple decades? Why Florida? :P
Did they really claim the Marlins were a major draw? That was a good laugh.
And now Gonzalo Higuain arrives to Inter Miami. Beckham is not going soft here definitively.
Hey why don't you guys talk about how they forged documents to try and get their overtown stadium site approved. Also lockhart is in Ft lauderdale not Miami have fun spending two hours in traffic to get to the stadium.
