Sorry, is Alastair Campbell seriously saying that he doesn't understand the "hoo hah" about the hate crime law?? This is a law that allows people to report something that they subjectively feel is offensive, even if the supposed perpetrator said it in the privacy of their own home, and even if the police decide that no crime has been committed, it will be recorded on a searchable list of "hate incidents" without the accused's knowledge! Is this not an affront to the most basic of liberal values - which Alistair and Rory supposedly support?

Yeah, I don't see how Alistair can claim with a straight face that, "It's not an attack on free speech"(18:28). An arguement can be made against absolutist stances on free speech (on grounds of civility/respect). But rather than make that case, Alastair just dismisses as absurd concerns about a law that criminalises saying anything online about certain demographic groups that "a reasonable person would consider to be threatening, abusive or insulting" (www.gov.scot/publications/hate-crime-public-order-scotland-act-2021-information-note/)
Now, in practice, nobody is going to arrest JK Rowling for having a politically incorrect opinion about the biological basis of sex. The government probably wouldn't win in court and they have more important things to worry about anyways. But, criminalising insults is definately a blow against free speech.

Could not agree more. Liberalism is eroded when we no longer allow people to say what they think is on their mind regardless of how others feel. This goes beyond the trans issue but on that point calling a trans woman different to a woman should not ever be a crime. People defending this law will just open the door for the right wing that they are purportedly against.

I saw warnings early in 2016, then saw a totally lawless US president who before office was compromised by Russia because Don Jnr & co decided to meet with their agents offering dirt on Clinton.
Then about racism & stoking violence, then saw the re-enactment of Nazi Germany era marches against jews, which Trump claimed had "fine people on both sides".
Then the provocation of blacks after the horrific murder of a man by a cop kneeling on his throat. Instead of peace & reconciliation, the violence was escalated because Trump wanted to run on law & order (like Nixon), which was unbelievably ironical.
Then we saw Trump behind in polls, so he talked up fears of voter fraud, and we now know there was plotting to cling to power rather than transfer it.
Even after Jan 6th the GOP failed to act and enabled and emboldened the fash personality cult, because it was expedient to leave punishment and prevention to the criminal justice system.
Then we saw obstruction of the criminal justice system rather than cooperation.
Now they can openly publish plans to destroy the criminal justice system and yet still, many independents or centre right Republicans dismiss the blatant signs of minority rule and the unpunished corruption, despite most of the chaotic 45th administration warning that Donaldict Trump intends dictatorship.

In the UK and elsewhere, much of the world of politics - and even more so society in general - seems to be blissfully unaware of the very real possibility than in 9 months from now, in the world's most powerful nation, democracy will in effect cease to exist. Trump 2.0 will see deranged extremists - whose primary qualification will be unlimited loyalty to Trump - brought into the very heart of government administration. This will be coupled with rapid, well-organised and wide-ranging moves to abolish or hugely curtail the freedoms of every institution needed for the maintenance of democracy, along with the placing of every possible obstacle in the path of as many Democratic Party voters as possible in terms of them being able to vote in all future 'elections'. In the process Trump will simply ignore all court rulings that he doesn't like - and if needed declare martial law.
This isn't scare-mongering - it's looming reality. So it's well past time to wake up before it's too late to stop neo-fascism taking power in the USA. British politicians need to stop worrying about 'burning bridges' with a future potential Trump Presidency if they speak out ... because a Trump Presidency will in any case blow up all bridges to democracy, democratic nations, and international alliances (like NATO) that are essential to preserving such democracy as exists in the world.

I am assuming you are American and even as informed as you must be watching this, how many of labour's front bench do you know?
Secondly isn't partisan campaigning by foreign governments going to play into the weird republican conspiracy theories about foreign governments and election rigging?
Thirdly it is a very high risk thing to do. Trump is incredibly vindictive and taking any action against him will likely be retaliated against if he gets his hand on the reins of government. Their is a real risk that if NATO partners antagonise trump in this way he will actively support a Russian invasion of Europe. Bit disappointed with Alastair's answer on the Scottish Hate Crime Bill and I cannot help but feel that he needed to research a wee bit more on it. The major problem with it is that the bar for what qualifies as "hate speech" has been lowered. You can be reported for speech in your own home and what qualifies as hate speech or the reason for reporting someone can depend on the perception of what you said.
The second issue is that Police Scotland are already overwhelmed by this. Last year, they had about 3000 reports for hate crime overall. After 2 days of the bill coming into law, 3-4000 reports were made in 2 days alone and only 85% of the police force had had the requisite training! Whatever side of the issue you sit on, it's clearly a much bigger issue than given credit for.
The question poser was also incorrect to say it brought the law into line with England and Wales.

She's certainly not helping a reasoned and respectful debate on trans clinics for young people.

Expecting AI to be impartial is a big mistake. AI is based on pattern recognition. This makes it extremely susceptible to "learning" any prejudice that is baked-in to the data used to train it. If it is learning from past decisions/assessments made by biased actors, it will emulate their bias. AI has no independent ability to judge the quality of the data being used to train it. Biased data will create a biased model.

Surely Scotland would only be welcomed into the EU if it was a nett contributor.
