  • The Ford Edge is a big, brash and bold American-style SUV just launched in the UK. Does it have what it takes to beat premium rivals like the Jaguar F-Pace and Mercedes GLC - and is it practical enough to see off family favourites like the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Kia Sorento? We find out.

    We had a brand new one exactly the same as this in 2017, we still have it. We upgraded from a Kuga when our 3rd child came along. We have looked into changing it, but nothing around impresses. It has electric everything, has been 100% reliable and is still unmarked. It’s beautiful to drive, quiet, comfortable and the huge boot has come in handy on holidays. 💯

    Love this car, looks great - why do all reviewers complain about the boot opening slowly? Can you imagine the potential for danger if a boot lid flew open at high speed?

    • @satnitcboy
      @satnitcboy Před 7 lety +2

      What they're getting at, I believe, is that electric tailgates open more slowly than a manual gate, which you we have always been able to merely lift up at will -grab what you want, and slam down it again, all in the time (they perceive) that is spent waiting for the electric lift to go through its paces.

    • @mjames2117

      There is no need for electric tailgates or electric seats.. just adds unnecessary weight.

    • @LifeOfNathan
      @LifeOfNathan Před 7 lety +2

      +Joey Bacon It is of a similar quality to the Sony system, however sound proofing in the Kia isn't great so on the motorway you loose the clarity and it all becomes rather noisy. Again I would say the Meridian sound system in Jaguars and Land Rovers is probably the best you'll get unless you get your own fitted.

    It's really strange seeing the British reaction to an SUV we've had in the states for awhile. The previous generation edge was awful and this new one is actually quite an improvement. I find it hilarious that he was so surprised by the Edge's size, because it's really not that large for an American SUV. It's more in the midrange segment. Obviously, they don't sell the really large Ford SUV's and trucks in the UK though like the Explorer, the Expedition, or the F-150, so compared to the Ford Escape (Kuga), it is quite large I suppose.

  • @benadamson2319
    @benadamson2319 Před 7 lety

    The fact that the diesel struggles to move the car highlights the problem with One Ford. In the US you get to pick from a 2.0 four pot EcoBoost, 3.5 V6 or a 2.7 V6 twin turbo EcoBoost. That's what the car's designed for, not a European eco-diesel.

    • @mjames2117
      @mjames2117 Před 4 lety

      Diesel is better than petrol for most larger cars with high torque at low revs. The problem is educating drivers to drive correctly. The 180hp PSA DW10FC diesel is brilliant in the Escape/ Kuga with AWD and 1.7 tons but has all the torque below 2500rpm and drives best between 1500rpm and 2000rpm. Max torque starts at 1700rpm and drops at 2500rpm. It seriously climbs hills like a lovesick angel! Really works best keeping revs low and not driven hard like a petrol needs to to get its power. Let the torque do the work. Ford Edge is 1.8 Tons 2WD & approx 2 Tons AWD. 2 litre diesel is fine for 2WD but AWD might benefit from a 2.2 diesel eg like the Santa Fe and Kia Sorentos.

    Having recently driven one of these I was completely bowled over. This was obviously far too macho a car for James. I know that on the (mostly!) well mannered British roads a vehicle of this style and nature can seem out of place. But elsewhere in the world, the sheer presence and reassurance of this thing (doesn't come across at all on camera for some reason) is very welcome.
    First of all I would take an Edge above all the competition because A) it makes the Koreans and other crossovers feel about as mighty as a tin can. B) the Edge is way more reliable than anything Jaguar-Land Rover produce (not saying much I know), and the Edge is also more reliable than anything the Germans make (also not saying much), but this does rank as a reliable car in all the usual customer satisfaction surveys.
    This is one of the more reliable cars Ford makes, and I'm NOT a Ford fan at all.
    But one word of warning, if you are going for one of these, don't go for the stupid 4 pot petrol engines, go for the 6 pot only. There is a common problem of oil leaking into the cylinders on the 4 pot. I guess this thing is just too weighty for a puny 2.0 liter engine to pull around. Damned environmentalists and their ruining everyone's fun. Or as our American cousins would say, damned communists! :P

      +Chatta290 Audi and BMW offer much more basic cars than they do in the US. That is why they aren't seen the same way. Things like cloth seats, wheel covers, 110-ish horsepower engines and $20,000 starting prices aren't something Americans see from these brands. Still, the comparisons aren't apples to apples. The Edge was never intended to be a competitor to anything like a Jaguar F-Pace or even a Mercedes GLC, but it costs more to play in Europe.

    • @Horizon301.
      @Horizon301. Před 7 lety

      Larry what do you mean, are audis here in the UK aren't any more expensive then a ford equivalent the fiesta might cost for example £15,000 but the VW polo would cost around £500 more and be so much better. this is a example of my parents cars which they bought both and the difference is staggering, a audi is then more money then the VW and comes with even better quality and style. that being said people have german cars here and we would not class a a4 as luxury it would be a A8 or a 7 series for example but in America they cost a lot more especially due to the pond being stronger but also the dealers there rip you off whereas in the UK they dint and stye offer you really good prices, probably because they dont sell as little as over in america but yeah if you can get a german car for under £2000 extra it would be compared to one as the only reason people will buy a Ford is because its cheaper

I wish more US-spec cars were available in the UK! I like American ride quality (if not always build quality!) far more than the hard "sporty" European approach. If we had silky smooth roads in the UK, sporty cars would be fine. As it is, they just hurt!

      Fords are better than Korean cars and build quality is on a par with most manufacturers now

    it looks horrible . I'd much rather have a galaxy , s-max or mondeo , Ateca , Kuga , ranger or a discovery .
    I think this is the worst looking ford since the Scorpio or arguably the ecosport .
