Officially dubbed "sick and offensive," Cradle Of Filth have built a legacy around their challenging artwork, bold aesthetic and extreme approach to heavy metal. Often written off as a mere shock rock band, frontman Dani Filth urges listeners to dig deeper into the literature and art that has inspired the band for nearly three decades and hopes they can help add a little color to the lives of their fans.
In this APTV exclusive, Filth goes in depth about the infamous "Jesus T-shirt," the three very bad things that have defined his band and how people's expectations of Cradle Of Filth being turned into the Backstreet Boys was the the driving catalyst in the creation of an overly ambitious and symphonically overstuffed record. Filth also gushes over Ghost, condemns the instant gratification culture around modern rock and advises aspiring bands in 2019 to "just give up."

People seem surprised how eloquent Dani is. Have you listened to his lyrics? The man knows how to write lyrics and articulate exactly what he wants to say and how he wants to say it.
You have to admire is lyricism. He’s quite the poet. That’s the one thing all other European bands don’t come close to. Especially, since English isn’t their native language.
Well said Dani is flat out fukn brilliant alot of his music is as deep as it gets it flat out fukn moves me
When I started reading Danis lyrics I was fukn moved with how brilliant he is its really deep and heavy and beautifully sick to me some of the best music you could ever hear its literally moving the whole band super talented fukn love cradle
His lyrics are straight up the best poetry written in 120 140 years
Totally agree (I am italian and not so able translating COF’s lirics expecially from early album)
His musical composition as well, its 20 plus years of listening to COF and i swear to god the albums never ever get old, how is this even possible??
@@Tikus_90Dani doesn’t compose any of the music or he didn’t when Nicholas Barker was in the band according to Nick
Think he was John Milton in a former life. No small wonder he penned Damnation and A Day.
Well educated, charming and eloquent speaker
MY WORLD ON VIDEO agreed
Gracias Totales English please this is not a foreign thread so provide translation if you are going to speak another language on it it does not make u cool cause u can speak something that is not the same language as even the video let alone the thread unless you write English too pce
MY WORLD ON VIDEO he’s really not, he’s pretty stupid.
@@joshuawhitelaw928 Pretty narrow-minded point of view... you can learn spanish and reply back, instead.
@@VictorLugosi I dunno, I'd say from a marketing perspective he's pretty clever.
No one ever talks about how Dani writes the best lyrics in music. No one even comes close, in any genre.
neocore Not like he’s the only one, but he’s definitely one of the best. Underrated for sure.
Xenoyr is up there with him.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I don't think this is about competing, since I believe it is a very subjective appreciation. But I'd dare to say that Maynard James Keenan is up there with one of the most relevant songwriting in the music industry.
No one comes close to the lyrical greatness of Dani. No one. For instance - and this can be said for any COF album, but since it is a concept album and the lyrics flow together, song to song - take Cruelty & the Beast. I’d say that is the greatest written album of all time, with a depth of lyrical greatness made even more difficult due to it being a continuing story.
🤦♂️
I grew up with these guys and seeing Dani with a gray beard reminds me that I’m old
Lucky you!!! Dani is a Genius.
Same, found them in the Nymphetamine days.
Same. Started listening to CoF when I was 14. I’m now 30. 😥
I saw them on MTV back in 1994 and I was 5 but seeing that can be these at the time I referred as “vampires” now known as I refer them as talented original artists I said I wanna be them with my own style. My kids are 7 and 14 they love cradle of filth and people can sit there say they are “sell out” which is bullshit. My next tattoo is going to be every cradle of filth album on both my legs. They have great members past and present like Sarah and Lindsay, Nick Barker, Paul Allender, Gian, David, Robin, Stuart, James, Charles, Lector, Martin, Adrian, Caroline, Rosie. My parents are their biggest supporters they’d take me to their concerts
Two fun facts:
1. Every time I listen to Midian all the way through, something good happens in my life.
2. No one has even seen Danny's real irises.
Thanks I'll be doing that now
They Are Blue
@@richardmeyer1837 Sadly no, dark brown. Very boring eyes, I have the same color and look at my photo, contacts!
@@5Demona5 Dani Filth Has Brown Eyes? Really?
@@richardmeyer1837 There's not many photos of him without contacts. But in photos of him with Luna as a baby, his eyes are just dark brown
This is the proof that you can be a pretty famous artist but also a very humble and intelligent person. Thanks so much for existing, Dani
Dani has the coolest, most charismatic British voice ever. He could talk about nothing and sound alluring.
I love old COF and way he talks
Lol, how many british voices have you heard? Judging on voice alone, I'd guess his name was either Nigel or Thomas and he works in one of them pretentious streetwear shops, selling "newsprint & spunk" t-shirts for £60 a pop.
@@ghouliethousandtrouser2905 I've heard a countless number of British accents over the years...All because of the fact that I have always loved British music, British movies, interviews with British philosophers, scientists, musicians, etc.
Huh, I suppose it depends on what you're used to. To me, he just sounds like "boring neighbour talking about his new car".
exactly what i think
Always a pleasure hearing this guy talk. Long live the Filth!
Marco Tolama Jr I love his laugh. Sooo funny. Cute little chuckle
Yes, so few people speak his level English.
He's absolutely right about how ppl today will just listen to individual songs as opposed to albums. It's really sad. I wouldn't have discovered some of my favorite songs had I not bought the full album, and had opted to download just a popular song.
I’ll always be a full album guy. I don’t do playlists, never have. I have one or maybe two albums that I’ll listen to at a time. I wear them out and then move on to the next.
@@hobojungle1 I'll do playlists, but, I'll also check out entire albums from various artists, in order to find the songs that i want on my playlist. (I have one playlist, and it gets listened to in the car lol)
Yeah I do playlists aswell because many albums are pure garbage except a few songs.
@@dangerpowers5939 if the album is garbage then I don’t listen to it. Gotta be a strong album otherwise I don’t bother with it.
I appreciate everything this guy has done! A lot of his music and lyrics have made me become a better and more evolved version of myself.
I agree entirely, the first song i heard was Born in a Burial Gown, which enthralled me and paved the foundation of my current self
@Angry White Goy GTKRWN 88 None of the fans of this band engage themselves in violent acts whatsoever perhaps a bit of excessive drinking here and there.
Fans of Christ and religion on the other hand....
Sandy Howell however yes these ppl are very uneducated on music on meaning on anything but at least they appreciate the music
@@joshuawhitelaw928 haha, pro Satanist got triggered
Yup..
We need a Cradle of Filth coffee table book with all the artwork through the 25+ years the band has been around.
Yes!!! Yes we do, I'd love that. I still look through my black metal book. It's just pictures of bands and odds and ends over the years
They do have one! It's called "The Gospel of Filth"
holy shit, that is a great idea. I love the artwork for "Cruelty". such a fantastic album...especially the remastered version that was released last October.
I been following this cats since their beginning they gotten better in some cds
The magic has totally gone, remember trying to find pictures of slipknot without masks? I miss the mystery
Well there's the new percussionist that people don't know.
J.J. I’ve seen the new guy is full of energy so it’s probably one of their kids I’m thinking
@@THEDOGSBODIES1 Slipknot suck anyway. They're a mainstream band who think they're like some extreme underground band. "I cut myself with broken glass naked while recording IOWA" yeah that's cute Corey. Meanwhile Dead tore both his arms open, slit his own throat then blew his head out with a shotgun while Euronymous took photos for the next album cover. xD
J.J. So they suck because they aren’t murderers or committed suicide? Grow up brah
@@Fireglo I am the new percussionist
It seems like a lifetime ago, but I remember even normies in my high school were talking about Cradle of Filth. That's how much mysticism the band had even before the internet.
I was lucky enough to meet him in the early 00's. He was so friendly, humble and lovely. I didn't know him and his wife divorced...his lyrics and depth of thought are amazing.
I didn't even know that Dani was married and I been listening to COF since 2009.
Dani has always been a very well spoken and intelligent guy, this is why they've fared so well over the years.
Respect from a fan of 25 years.
I need them everyday, since ten+ years ago...
Dani is the best (english) teacher you can ask for!
edit: 38 likes, thank you so much!!!
Quite same here, I've listened them 10+ years and always when there's a new word I don't recognize I google it and usually it's like "Let's see.. Oh.. Oh dear, ok.. Well then." xDD
Iirc Dani has 2 English masters degrees.
So True, even simple words like shouldst, wouldst & didst I never even knew were real words! So constantly consulting Google for the all the rest of it has greatly increased my vocabulary...quite extensively!
Dani’s a big inspiration to me as a horror and poetry writer. His brilliant lyrics have inspired me for well over a decade (:
Indeed, I am a dark, gothic writer as well and CoF is a huge inspiration. Hail Satan, my friend.
I definitely miss the mysticism of the underground as he mentions. I remember being 13 in ‘95 and stumbling upon Metal Maniacs on a newsstand, with Quorthon on the cover. Good times.
I had a subscription for years. Miss that mag
Yep the good ol days of going to the music store and reading metal maniacs, BW & BK, Pit, Terrorizer, etc. Not knowing what underground metal the store was holding that week and being surprised at what u find.
There’s still anonymous black metal bands eg Al Namrood , Batushka, Mgła
And listening to the same CD or K7 thousands of times and taking good care of them... Now it's just... Too much!!
You do know that unlike King Diamond that Quorthon was not a real satanist?
I’m not a Cradle fan, but Dani is an interesting and an intelligent person. I wanna have a beer with him.
Good to see Dani still is following the Underground scene, wearing a CRAFT shirt.

If Danni wasn't a musician he would probably be a historian.
I think he's both.
He is indeed an historian. It was because of Cradle of Filth that I'd found out who Elizabeth Bathory was
oh my they are so fab half my life loven them they re like a drug cant get enough and iam 55 this year well done them please dont stop
Clicked on this so fast! Dani seems like such a chilled out, down to earth guy, I'd love to sit down with him and have a good chat about music and stuff.

Would love a documentary on the line up changes, would probably take hours though!
Talk to him about live and where he finds inspiration for his lyrics. I think he allready talks about music enough
Love it!!
I miss your voice from 1993, the music "principle of evil made flesh" always make me feel so alive.
First time I listened to cradle of filth was back in 2000 Cruelty and the Beast I read the lyrics on the cd 💿 booklet felt like I was reading a Shakespearean poem it was beyond my level of comprehension I didn’t understand at the time I was 20 yrs these guys are very talented!
Same, same.
Oh god, I love this!!! Thank you so much for the upload!!! Brilliant job!
CHRISTINE Moll Thank you so much! We’re so happy you enjoyed it! 🤘🤘
Dani will never how important he and his work have been in my life.♡ Bless this mans brain
They are what got me started, it was absolutely an incredible feeling when I thought I found something so Xtreme and poetic at the same time. Music brought the artistic side out of me and also brought me out of some dark days. I was so attracted to the gateways of these amazing bands and it definitely gave me life when everything looked so bleak and hopeless. I owe cof so much credit for the inspiration. 🤘🤘
I will never forget Cradle's set at ozzfest 2002 when this freak hailstorm came smashing down the very second cradle to enslave kicked in
I was there dude totally awesome memory, the storm literally started as the band hit the stage and continued throughout there set it was a freaky coincidence or was it? long live donington.
Robin Webley was that in Seattle? I was there. Voivod played and it was sunny and hot. Cradle hits the stage and clouds and rain. Dani actually said “the hardest part of our stage show is getting the weather to cooperate.” Then, when they finish, sunny and hot again.
@@derekgilbert1752 nah mate was at Donnington UK 🇬🇧
Haha cradle and their nailed god followers sending weather to smite them!
@@derekgilbert1752 voivod I hear are like a holy grail of bands. Have you heard of Cardiacs?
Great interview Dani! I never get sick of band stories.
Happy to hear Dani loves Ghost ❤️
Thank you for all the information and your honesty, Mr. Filth!
His writing for the song lyrics is majestic and very poetic with excellent articulation. His work like manybothers in not just metal should have their lyrical content placed in museums. But Dani's in particular!!!
Fresh and honest interview, we don't get much of that nowadays! Keep going strong Dani, see you on the road soon!
behelit79 Thanks for the kind words. It was truly an honor to chat with Dani. We appreciate you watching!
Fantastically poetic lyricist. Beautiful work. Thank you, Dani!
I'll be honest, when I first saw the Babalon A.D. music video, they scared the hell out of me. Yet I kept coming back to them (Uranium was THE SHIT). I love their music. They are the only Black Metal band I listen to. His voice was nothing like anything I'd ever heard, even for Black Metal. They are something all their own. Thanks guys.
Amazing interview. Extra love for the Craft T-Shirt :)
James Bigglesworth Thank you so much! We’re thrilled that you enjoyed it.

Bobbi Lowery He was extremely pleasant to speak with-an absolute gentleman and obviously very articulate.

“There’s gotta be a book there somewhere.”
Not a huge CoF fan, but this was an intriguing interview.
Great interview. I used to just disregard bands like COF, Cannibal Corpse, etc.
They didn't fall into my box style wise and image wise. Now I'm in my '60s and I appreciate the technical ability and the intelligence of the people behind the music. First time I heard of cradle of Filth was from a guy in my music theory class. He had a radio show late night on our local community radio station. He also played in a metal band. The next time I heard cradle of Filth was when it was walking by my daughter's bedroom when she was in high school and she was teaching herself how to play the bass by playing along with their albums. She's pretty amazing that way and it opened me up to checking out more of the material.
Anyway, thanks for the great interview.
He inspires me so much as a Gothic writer
Gosh, I love how orchestral and theatrical this band is. If you read the lyrics, they really tell an awesome story through each song. I normally don't like overtly screamy vocals, but this band is truly unique in that it's not always screamy, and has choral sections to it. I love their creativity.
The legendary master himself. Great interview! \m/ \m/

Wow, Dani is such an amazing person... He is such a smart creative and enchanting man...I love all of his work...His music saved my life... Hands down ,HE IS THE BEST SONG WRITER EVER!!!

I’ve been a COF fan since the age of 18 (in 2000). It’s been just amazing to see Dani age with me
The lyrics will wrap you in a surreal dream. Dusk...And Her Embrace will always be my fav
That is easily my favorite album too.
Oh Jesus, the Grinch shirt. They've had a lot of shirts, some have called them a t-shirt producing outfit who are a band on the side.
I really like Cradle Of Filth lyrically, Dani's lyrics and have helped me improve my word power a lot.
He translates some complex thoughts and ideas into clear and meaningful speech ! I absolutely agree with him! The thrill is gone ! When I was a kid there was so much excitement the moment you manage to get a cassette tape of an underground metal band ! That mystic fantastic experience when you discover a band through their work then you start to imagine how they look like, or the other way around : you stumble upon a magazine and the front cover makes you want to discover the band and see how the guys sound ! I remember that mixture of excitement and fear when I started listening to Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Cradle of Filth, Emperor, King Diamond, Marduk... those were the days ! And once again Dani is right, escapism is the word ! It was through metal music, and fantasy/horror cinema ! Thank you for the nice upload, cheers from Morocco.
This guy is a pretty smart fella. People don't notice that enough
Great interview!
Cyan_ Thank you!!! 🤘🤘
Spent 10-15yo wearing the Principle of Evil and Praise the Whore shirt, finally got the "Jesus" shirt when I was 17 after years of hearsay and mythical fodder, and found it rather anti climatic. But I've been a fan of CoF since I was 8/9 and have yet to see them live. Hopefully get to see them soon.
Thank you for this interview.
_tubbytits Thank you so much for watching!! We’re very pleased you enjoyed it. You had some seriously great taste as a kid!
Alternative Press Thank you! My parents had differing opinions on that early phase lol. You guys did great. If you ever get the chance I would love to see an interview with Clive Barker and/or Doug Bradley, especially with the literature referenced in Dani's lyrics and involvement in voice overs on past records. With Barkers recent return to health - though I'm not sure if that's possible because I've heard his past friendships were tainted with gossip regarding his illness, which was a tooth related bacterial reaction not "HIV" but I digress - it'd be a pinnacle of entertainment, an interview to get that trio together either on film or transcripts separate relating to each other, or even on-the-phone/Skype interviews. Any possibility would be insightful - or at the very least time will tell.

9:42 I remember this festival. Dani Filth said "If you're gonna throw mud, throw it at the keyboard player" 😂 That was my first time out of 3 seeing this band. One of the best live shows i've been to. Hopefully I'll get to see them again soon.
He has great points about metal, all the aesthetics and references; plus the mysterious feeling some bands portrayed and how it disappeared. That's why when it comes to this band I prefer the old COF albums from "From The Cradle to Enslave" to "Midian", but that's just my opinion.
Ever since damn high school cradle changed my life. I appreciate this band to the fullest. TOUCHED BY JESUS FINGERED BY GOD... I got that 👕 haha
Simply amazing retrospect! Yeah, the band has lost it's mystery a long time ago and 2010's is so much different than 80's and 90's due to (probably) internet having lowered the shock value of everything. Simply put, people know lot of *real world* s*ht which scares much more than some made-up-anti-fantasy back in 90's. Back then Filth was really taken seriously by so many people, be it those back-then-teenagers or pro-christian-groups. Controversy was a real thing back then... now that the time has passed it's amazing to hear the point of view from the performer and I *really* love the way you guys got "the final laugh" by telling how (well, arguably) easy it was to control the crowds of listeners and haters. Right act at the right time. As for the music, I think it's amazing Filth continues it's journey! I stopped listening after the Cruelty And The Beast, as that was the peak album for me, but I was pleasantly surprised by live show the band threw in Finland 2018 - It was a nostalgic journey and band really threw a show, both visually and music-wise. Nice job!
It's fun to hear Dani credit the soundtrack-genre and the importance it played for Filths music. Back in the 90's I was still growing to the music and slowly becoming (still an amateur) musician. After many iterations for over 20 years I finally understood that everything I had really loved in metal scene was about *the atmosphere*, which finally evolved my composing towards soundtrack-music. Filth with many other great band made great impact for my personal growth and those great songs are still part of music I continue to compose.
Yeah, hell-of-a-retrospective! Cheers!
My favorite band to this day, literally spent $150.00 in the last two days because I support art. This band is high art to such an exquisite and eclectic taste for one with a personality like mine. Thank you Dani (and band) for coming to the U.S. and enlightening the masses with your filthy fucking love.
I love this guy he's real as fuck
Excelente, directo y enfocado! me gusta la madurez con la que Danny se esta manejando
I discovered CoF when i first got into metal at 14. Picked up a headbangers ball mix album. My first contact with bands like in flames, Deicide, behemoth & Dark Tranquility. CoF had Medusa & Hemlock on it. Became my fav band, i got album cover symbols tatted on my arm i loved them so much. Dani always had amazing vocals but lyrically he is a genius. Hes a greater poet than most of histories greatest poets.
I love that Dani enjoys the music of Ghost and Then Comes Silence ❤️
I’m not a COF fan but I could listen to this guy talk all day! Very articulate and interesting! He just seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders. There’s a reason he’s found success. Sorry this vid made me geek out!
Good interview. I was hoping he would go a bit more into the early early days of the band, when they were basically Carcass Jr.
Yt nailed it with me, got Dani recommended today! Wow
Black Craft Cult jacket, I’ve got the same one. Good to know you’re a man of great style ;)
Then Comes Silence is indeed amazing, Dani. Everybody should listen to them
I've just listened to them. Yep they're really good, somewhere in between The Sisters Of Mercy and Bauhaus. It's quite logical that Dani likes them.
I love the way he laughs, I didn't think he would laugh like that! 😂😂😂😂
You should write a poetic novel dani.
Your lyrics mix with the instruments and vocals. beautiful.
So happy I got too see them live! I’ve been too so many concerts but CoF was legendary.
I haven't payed attention to Filth in over a decade but Cradle will always be a the top of bands that broke me into the genre. Dusk and her Embrace use to be on repeat consistently on WinAmp
the man is an absolute legend and god of lyrics, literally I don't think there is a better lyricist on the planet, and I don't even think it's a close second...
Hes definately up there.
