  • ANAHEIM, California - Low-wage workers are being priced out of Orange County, the posh suburbs south of Los Angeles. That’s especially true in the city of Anaheim, and its largest employer: Disney.
The unions representing Disney’s lowest-paid workers have banded with other unions in Anaheim to put a measure on the ballot: a new minimum wage for the hotel and restaurant workers at the city's largest resorts that would pay $15 per hour by 2019, and gradually increase to $18 per hour by 2022. (California’s minimum wage is set to increase to $15 per hour in 2021.) Raises thereafter would be at least 2 percent per year.
The push for a ballot measure has drawn the ire of the city, and Disney itself. The company is co-funding the group pushing against the measure, with the subtle name No To The Anaheim Job Killer Initiative.
Anaheim Chamber of Commerce President Todd Ament said the measure, if enacted, would drive off future investment and kill two luxury hotel project planned for Anaheim.
Disney workers say they can’t live in Anaheim - or most places in Orange County - while earning less than $15 per hour.

Clear the cobwebs out, David. She's been there for 30 years!! That generation of employees were almost "lifers." They didn't believe in job jumping. They were prepared to dedicate their lives to a place and watch it grow!! This is where the "new" generation of CEOs fail those who are honest and dedicated employees. Who the hell will hire her now at her age and with her qualifications, except another similar park. And where will you find one? Do you expect her to pack up and move to another state at her age with no friends, family or familiar contacts or any place to live so she can make $15 an hour? How much do you make? Helluva sacrifice for HER to make when many CEOs are getting close to $100 million a year, plus deferred compensation, paid medical insurance, stock options, company autos with paid insurance and fuel, free air travel for him and family, paid director's fees and paid travel to Board meetings including food, drink and accommodations, and assorted other perks and reimbursements. Hell, they hardly have to pay any of their own living expenses!!!. Some of them even sneak in paying for their mistresses' apartments. And the sad part is none of them really have enough accumulated knowledge worth that money. Most, if not all, are members of fraternities and the "good ole boys' clubs" where it's not what you know, but WHO you know. I saw ironclad evidence of that in many different forms on many occasions when I was clerking in an office working my way through school when I came back from Viet Nam. Believe me when I say it would have been a cold day in hell before I could stomach working in that atmosphere full time.

@@peebay3515 I can tell you from personal experience it is much more economical to keep a trained employee and give him or her a reasonable raise than to have to hire, train, then perhaps even fire, a gaggle of job candidates for that same job, who are either too lazy or too stupid, or perhaps too arrogant to complete parts of the job description because it is beneath their "social status." Ofttimes those prima donnas will feign stupidity so they don't have to do the damned work--and you know that's being done and you can't do a damned thing about it. There's no firing those little frat boys, even if they robbed you blind. When you have a run of about 20 of those whose only qualifications for the job are that they are the sons of friends of the partners, you will appreciate that "lipsticked pig" more than you could ever know--especially when your own work falls seriously behind because you are expected to teach them hands on, and ignore their arrogance and stupidity while all the while the spawn of all those buddies smirks at you while you're trying to explain a concept and trying to avoid being forced to do their work yourself. The problem is that rent is too high. Investors buy up all the properties and charge the most they can for rent. If they can charge the average person $1200/month for an apartment when 90% of the local population is only making $24,000, they will. It's a problem with the free market rental and home pricing system in America. People need to come up with a solution to this. Ultimately, the prices of homes and rent has to come down. And people who own those homes won't like it.

Rent is now 60% of my wages, and every other cost has gone up too. The cost of living has raised about 20% and were now loosing money because of how low our pay is. So now I pay almost triple the rent and I don't make more money. So it's created rent burden and everything else has raised in price from food, medicine, insurance. you name it costs have increased!
James I'm a sub contractors, I have asked for raises every year. But they contract hasn't included a raise because the company I work for doesn't write it into our contracts. The answer I get is, we have no laws saying you have to get raises. Not every company gives cost of living increases, many are super cheap!

I feel that because people are so proud of working at Disney is that they assume that it's a good job and that by simply working there they are working at the best job they can get. In reality it's the illusion of being in the happiest place on Earth that's making them assume that this is the greatest job ever. It's kind of like working at McDonald's assuming that you're eating high-quality gourmet food but in reality all you're just beating is garbage. As somebody who pretty much studied on both the history and the growth of the company for an assignment, I can assure you that this has to be one of the most scummiest companies in existence purely on the account of how much they price their merchandise, they're park entries and also how they pay their animators and employees, in reality the Disney company has to be probably the worst company to work for. Wholesale places like Costco and certain fast food joints actually provide a better minimum wage than Disney because they know that the people that are going to be working there are not going to be working there forever and even so they would still provide the necessary amount in order to have a livable wage depending on the location and also depending on the economic status of the place. To make a long story short, Disney is a horrible company to work for and I can imagine it would suck being an employee there.

I've met people who gave up good careers so that they could work some crappy job at Disney, and they absolutely loved it even though it didn't pay enough. I know one guy who never used his IT degree because he's been working in the park selling popcorn for 20 years, and has to deliver pizza at night just to make enough to get by. Why are we putting the class of people that do not work above the class that does? Owning a burger joint or hotel is not herculean task, that place practically runs itself. The owners hardly even run the operation. I'm not advocating that they should not earn anything (because risk is a thing, and there is also the argument that some of them may have actually worked to earn that capital in the first place, some), but that should not mean profiting a million a year while your 50 person staff lives in poverty. Half of that profit going to the staff means an extra 10k a year, which is the literal difference between a poverty wage and a livable one. How much of what the business produces is actually a product of the owners? I argue that without the workers, there is no business at all, and it never grew to the size it is.

Sometimes in life you need to make tough decisions. I went into the job field right out of high school and within 7 years I was “topped out” on pay at $12. I was working my butt off and doing the work of 2 people, which they then hired 2 people to replace me. Now I have been working for a company about 8 years now and continue to grow my potential. The point is that if your not getting paid enough you need to move on. We wrap so much emotion into our jobs and the places we work, when in reality most companies don’t care about who does the job just as long as it gets done. I’m not saying that Disney is right in what they do, but your not forced to work for low wages you make that choice.

Word. If you're not getting paid enough, then find a job that pays more, or get a second job. Many of us did it. I worked three jobs for 2 years to care for my family. Now I alone make as much as the average household. Companies want hard workers, if you work hard, someone will notice and pay you a competitive wage.

It’s an entry level job meant for inexperienced people to gain experience working. It’s honestly a job best fit for teens in the area during summer and college students trying to make extra income. It’s not meant to support a grown adult for 30 years or a person with an entire family. I don’t see why that’s so hard to accept.
Plus, I’m sure there are areas near Anaheim that aren’t as expensive to live. Sure, it might require more of a commute to work, but there are people that drive hours to get to work already.

You keep using the same old worn out Three Stooges reasoning over and over again.
These are not part time jobs for teenagers who are entering the labor market. Hotels in large cities are 24/7/375 operations and they must use full time workers who must work a "Straight 8" and most likely a "Straight 16". There are also very significant administrative costs associated with having employees on the payroll and it's more cost effective to have one employee work full time rather than having multiple employees working part time.
Furthermore, big hotels are located in big cities where the cost of living is high as a kite and the workers cannot afford to live anywhere near where they work. You say "Get a job some where it's cheaper to live." However the job at the hotel in the big city isn't able to move to a cheaper place and it must be filled by someone else ....... Who will be in the same damn predicament as the worker who left it.

Look, if she’s working there for 30 years AND have management training opportunities that she refused, that’s completely on her.
She’s literally just laying out food and greeting guests. That’s neither difficult nor stressful. You can’t say that it is. She even mentions how much she loves her job and that it’s fun.
Newsflash: fun jobs don’t always pay that well and boring jobs can pay a lot more. That’s just how it is. In addition to this, she mentions how hungry she is yet she owns a pet. That pet cat looked pretty young, meaning she already had “poverty wages” before deciding to own a pet. If feeding her cat on “poverty wages” is more important than feeding herself, that’s her choice.
Also, this might sound a bit mean, but how hungry can she really be? She looks a little on the hefty side, does she not? Usually hungry people that are living in poverty are a lot thinner.

We had someone come into the business and talk to us (the corporate staff) and they asked what issues we saw and solutions. The one issue was lack of competitive pay. That chamber of commerce guy is completely out of touch with reality. I'm not sure he understands basic economics. If Disney is the largest employer, it is always growing and clearly has 100% political support from the city. What bloody "free market" is there? Workers have no choice. You can move away in lieu of a job elsewhere but then what do you have? No workers = no local economy. This guy needs to protect his citizens not the corporations.
The only solace workers have is the pride they have in their work. Disney is notorious for their horrible lawsuits against natural citizens and we can add not paying for workers to that list, this is wrong. Workers cannot save for their families or retirement. We have an aging population - just wait 20 years from now when the city has thousands of people that need affordable care homes and are no longer in positions to live with others. Any financial benefit they have reaped from this horrible deal with Disney will need to then be spent on a growing problem of ageing and homelessness.
If you cannot afford to pay your workers living wage you cannot afford to have a business. It's that simple.

The biggest trouble started when the Walt Disney Company decided to open the second gate (park) which ended up being Disney's California Adventures. With the additional park and Downtown Disney to staff, the year round need for cast members has tripled but cast members are forced to resign to even make ends meet. I've seen several postings for Disneyland job fairs online, something that the park normally didn't have to do, since college kids almost always made up the slack. The work is out though about how badly Disney pays for what they require of cast members. Always smiling and acting like there isn't a care in the world is fake. I left the park but that didn't stop me from becoming an annual passport holder for a while. There were a lot of adults, in their mid forties or early fifties, who were still single and living with their elderly parents, anywhere from South Orange County to Long Beach but still, Disney has a way of conning people just like several successful politicians. The bottom line is that the top brass at Disney, like at any corporation, are only responsible for one thing only. That is to make the values of shares stockholders purchase go up. The unions were always weak and they lost their credibilty a long time ago. The woman depicted is also a type of loner. She rarely goes out and she isolates. Disneyland castmembers are always hosting activities to get to know other people and to make friends. Although I was an attractions host, I was one of the few who crossed lines and I got to know people who were in entertaiment or"characters" or merchandising (the stores), or outdoor vending because, when the huge parades and shows go on and you're put in charge of guest control, every department sends some cast members to assist with this in a group effort.
