Start slowly, reward him for just looking at you for the first few days. As his attention span increases, you can gradually increase the difficulty of your exercises. Also, pre training exercise really helps with some puppies.
What is the best kind of treat? I'm getting my boy in 2 weeks i can't wait! Very excited. I just want to make sure i am 100% ready for him and do what i need to do to train him
This is exactly what I'm doing with my puppy that is about the same age as yours. I got him on Wednesday. This breed is great for training and I love how easily they learn! Mine was more reserved in the beginning but still always keeps his tail up, then once he's settled in he's looking for things to chew and is starting to test me to see what he can and can't get away with. He'll start off chewing his toys and then try to sneak and chew his bed or my pillow, or a shoe. It doesn't take much correction to stop him though as he watches for my reaction. Usually just saying "Uh" and giving him a look gets him to stop.
New sub here. As a trainer of some 45 years this is so great to see. So many breeders don't even bother handling the pups let alone start the training as you do. I give you loads of respect for this. The last pup I bought had no handling at all and very high drive ,so was a biting monster for a while. Now at 16 months she is amazing but it has taken loads of work every day 5/6 times daily. Well done :) Look forward to watching many more of your videos. Lovely pups to. Thank you .
Wow, great work. You have an excellent way with these dogs. I saw dog #3 get up on the table and instantly thought "uh oh, an unconfident dog...he won't learn as quickly"....within 30 seconds you had that nervous dog performing the basic steps. Amazing work - you really know what you're doing.
Watching your videos is just amazing. Your methods are fantastic! It's good to know that there are really people who use a kind and gentle hand in the training of pups.
It fascinates me how different the personalities of the puppies can be! Love the fact that with patience, each pup responds to the training in their own way. I enjoy the way you modify the training to respond to the needs of the puppy's personality. I agree it's important to match the personality of the pup to the prospective owner.
Many thanks for the instruction and motivation. I used your techniques for my 2 months old Akbash Anatolian shepherd. She learned "sit" in 5 minutes, and then "down and up"! We continue thanks!
You know more about dogs then 99 % of the so called Expert You Tube Dog trainers. I have a Shy and Alpha 5 month old GS puppies your video gave a lot of insight how to train them. Thanks
God, SPOT ON!!! You are nailing the Essentials of Training, IE; The Patience Needed, The Tolerance Needed For EACH Personality, describing that each dog has a different temperament and the way an owner should choose a puppy which should be based on temperament NOT looks. A+!!! Thanks for making such a GREAT video about training. YOU'RE AWESOME!!! Wolfy :)
Simply put: The best video that my husband and I have seen in training puppies! Husband tried it immediately while we were watching the video with a completely different breed and it WORKED! All he did was have our puppy follow his hand, and she went into positions that we have worked on with her for months!
I might be getting a Mal or a German Sheppie, and your video really helped me a lot with what to expect, especially in understanding that you have to realise when a puppy is working hard, even if he is having trouble. Thanks!
Thank you for these videos. I just adopted a baby Mal, she’s so smart, she’s getting me out of the house twice a day at the park. They are amazing! Thank you again for the tips and tricks.
Thank you. At 7 weeks I begin all three areas of Schutzhund with agility course all for food, no corrections. You'll be stunned what these babies can do.
Your videos are amazing!!! I LOVE your answer to the above bite question. Thank you for all the time and skill you have put into teaching and recording!
Thanks Stonnie for this thoughtful share. I regard your patience while reading each individual behavior traits & throughout the training process. Very kind...
I have a new Cavalier puppy got her at 8 weeks and now 10 weeks. I stumbled on your videos and found these to be wonderful guides to my training. Stonnie I love the way you train in such a positive playful way, best I have ever seen. I hoping to find your guide to leash training as we are just beginning in the gentlest way possible
It made my day to finally watch a training video with Mals that didn't have aversive training methods!! Bravo! Love love love this video! Subscribed :)
Fantastic video! I'm not a trainer, just a dog owner that has spent a lot of time with their dog in training (I have a chow chow, but I love the malinois). Your approach to dogs is not only technically proficient, but also shows a lot of care for such beautiful creatures. Way to go!
Stonnie, I've trained dogs on and off for 6 years. Mostly off, due to shoulder and back injuries I love to watch others who use the dog's energy and temperment to adjust to how to train the puppy or older dogs. I love shephards and malinois, so thank you for your highly instructive video. Full disclosure: I do not know Stonnie at all, just found his terrific video after searching Malinois here.
Stonnie I've watched some of your puppy videos and must say they are EXCELLENT. I've been training shepherds and malinois for 40 years and you explain, stress & demonstrate important points very well. A job well done!! I'm going to share with my friends on FB.
Stonnie there are a lot of bullshiters out there as you well know. I've been doing this for 40+ years and I'm glad you get a lot of views on your videos because you provide real good common sense information. Once again, well done!
My family and I just adopted a Malinois from a rescue and didn't know it at the time and conveniently enough a Malinois was the dog my mom wanted! She's extremely energetic and is very vocal. We think she's around 8 weeks which makes the timing of me finding your videos perfect! any must know tips for raising her?
You are a awesome trainer and the kind of person I would look to buy a puppy from. I will keep your kennel in mind. Don't change a thing about your train style.
Stonnie, great videos. Picking up my pup next week. What do you use for treats? And can I use a Home Depot apron instead of a Lowes? Just kidding I use them both. Thanks
Thanks, it's not that I am against compulsion in training though. As these puppies mature I will try to give you guys some insight on what I consider to be the appropriate role of compulsion in the training process.
I just got a malinois 3 days ago, I named him Specter :) 14 weeks and he's one hell of a puppy ,long walks to tire him out and hell lot of zoomies and I'm going to watch every video so I can train my boy
Cool video man! You're obviously very knowledgeable with these puppies. It's interesting to see their different personalities. I'd love to have a German Shepherd or Malinois some day.
Amazing video and adorable puppies! We are getting our first GS/Belgiun Mal in a couple weeks! Looking at all the videos I can to train myself to train her. We always had GSs. :)
thank you for taking the time to make the video's, it has really helped with training my Malinois pup. i have a few questions if you dont mind. 1: what are you using as reward treats in the video and how much are you giving at a time? 2: I got my girl at 11weeks (she 12weeks now), i work with her everyday and have got sit, stay, no and release commands down but come and down are intermittent (her focus i believe), are we far behind the curve at this age with commands? 3: i crate her every night and make her take naps inside as well (i leave the crate door open during the day naps), is this suggested? 4: at 4 months we will be going to k9 academy for both general obediance and protection training, what would you suggest she should be trained in before our first day? you may get im just nervous we are behind on training for the age but yet i understand i cannot cram everything at once as well. many thanks, Paul & Ghost
You know you have an awesome job when you say things like “now I’m gonna go get some more puppies.”
Andy i love this puppy
For reals !!
This guys videos are so helpful. Not only coaching you on how to train the puppies but how to understand them better.
I just want to make sure i am 100% ready for him and do what i need to do to train him
Frankie A how is it with a malinois?
Use kibble…the goal is to ensure you are the source of all good things.

Thanks Stonnie, got my 4 month Malinois puppy last week. Training going well...keeping to your motto...a tired dog is a good dog
Following this training series gave me a Malinois that is a genuine service dog, and the best dog I have ever owned. This man is a godsend.
"now I'll go get some more puppies" can I come too?!

Watching your videos is just amazing. Your methods are fantastic! It's good to know that there are really people who use a kind and gentle hand in the training of pups.

thank you for taking the time to make the video's, it has really helped with training my Malinois pup. i have a few questions if you dont mind.

4: at 4 months we will be going to k9 academy for both general obediance and protection training, what would you suggest she should be trained in before our first day?
you may get im just nervous we are behind on training for the age but yet i understand i cannot cram everything at once as well.
many thanks,
