I love that zero hesitation by duke to go save the crew. He’s not around long but you can see why Paul’s humanity is an important thing to have.
Of course, dead men can't spread tales of being saved ;)
“Damn the spice! I want every man off that crawler NOW!”
He was prepared to lose the spice if it meant saving the crew
That’s the kind of leader you should be, be prepared to lose the potential profit if it means saving your people
Even in the book the planetologist said a man like that would create fanatical loyalty
And Paul is immediately on board too. Notice his response to his dad asking how many crew isn't "why are you asking?" He knows exactly what the reason was and he's already thinking through rescue plans himself.
Duke Leto's charisma and humanity were very important factors in Paul's upbringing. The Duke's behavior in this scene is ABSOLUTELY on point.
I loved this scene in the 84 Dune, and Dennis exceeded my expectations here.
I love how the duke tells Paul that he always wanted to be a pilot and in this scene he fly's the aircraft himself.
What a great movie to include such minor details.
The Duke was a skilled pilot. It wasn't his first time. Not remotely. Not saying you said that. Just clarifying. The Duke wanted to make it hos career, but higher duty called.
@@Biggiiful That's right, and in the books the Atreides were known as skilled pilots...Hence their insignia, 'The Hawk'...Leto also had eyes of a hawk in this scene, he spotted the worm before the spotters did
04:33 My god, that moment when they pull their wings out, the music kicks in together with the flawless sound design and visuals is so good. Especially at the cinema.
U can feel shit abt to go down !
I think I'll have to see this movie.
This was the exact moment in the theater where I went "oh yeah, this is the best movie of the year." So good.
I fkn know right
Leto putting the crew over the spice proves how much of a threat he was and why the emperor needed him gone, he was a man of the people who sought the well being of others
the crawler with its spice was a goner regardless so it didn't really matter if they saved the crew or not from a corporate perspective
@@zaphenath6756 whoosh
No. Leto's problem was his personality. It's made abundantly obvious in this movie that Leto would have produced WAAAAY more spice than the baron. But the Harkonnens sabotaged the production so that became an excuse for the attack. Baron's strategy was to let his descendents do all of it and beat/kill them when they fail.
It's not as if he had a choice to save the spice.
I like how quickly they start panicking after being so calm
everyone is calm cause even though there is danger there is a plan, then the plan failed spectacularly and everyone didnt know what to do.
The “sand screen” (basically tan colored blue screens with texture) really helped make all of these scenes look far more realistic when you see the light on the actors.
Sounds like a massive pain for the CG folk though.
@@Keyecomposer Well, the won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects so it was probably worth it.
The use of scilence during the fall was just brilliant.
This was the scene that got me addicted to dune. So much emotion and lore in such a simple scene. Sooo much explained in seconds without many words of actual explanation. Master work
Dennis Villenuve is the king of "show dont tell" why i love him so much.
This film was a religious experience
Facts I watched it with my dad and was blown away. Imagine seeing this like 30 years ago.
Amen
Kind of restored a shred of my faith in moder Hollywood blockbusters. First genuinely good one in over 10 years imo
@@marcusfreire7349 so true. I was sceptical too especially if remakes, but Denis blew it out of the water, the music, the mysticism, the magnificence and might of the worms. Can’t wait to see his take on the final attack on arrakeen with the worms.
Lol what?
I hadn't read the book before watching the movie and at the theatre this was the scene that made me wanna read the book. And from this point on the story was so majestic😍
Currently reading the book. Same feeling and emotion, did a great job with the movie and an amazing book to reference.
I saw the old version with Sting and I was like "meh" but this encouraged me to read the book!
the same for me.
and , amazing... every single visual reference was present ahaha
Notice the spotter aircraft at 1:40 are easter eggs: miniature Aries 1B moon shuttles from 2001 A Space Odyssey. Clever little insert to the movie!
Yes I noticed that. In the book the spotters are also ornithopters.
I think it's interesting how they look different, it gives me the impression that they're more like short range compact derigible aircraft
Guessed I wasn't only one thought about that! I literally rewatched 2001 again month ago and want to see again already
A big difference between movie Leto and book Leto, is that movie Leto is legit heroic, while book Leto takes this action to make his men love him more. He is aware of his own propaganda, and he is aware that taking heroic risks for people, will make them more loyal to him.
That point is true, but it also raises a question. At what point does the lie become the truth in that context if it's lived long enough?
Book doesn't have bad guys ALL white. Or the good guys ALL inclusive of nonsense accents! Silly woke stuff galore! TOO BAD.
I believe being smart and self-aware does not make one any less heroic. If someone brought food and water to your town during starvation and drought, it would not really matter if they devoted their time and fortune to visiting your town solely to save you, or if they were on a business trip and heard of your town and brought the food and water in their free cabin.
@@HOSAS_Gaming There is a difference between being a hero, and selling yourself as being the hero. It's thematically important, as Paul does the same thing once he is climbing to power.
@transformersrevenge9 If the book illustrated them differently and stressed out how and why they are different, then it won't be a matter of argument. I'm saying this because I haven't read the book, so I have no idea if it is. So, if that's the case, forgive my clueless comment.
What I tried to say was, even if you try to sell yourself as a hero, it doesn't make you any less of a hero - if you did something heroic, risking yourself to save others, then you're a hero. If you tried to get some respect and attention, then you're a hero who wanted respect and attention. If you did it because it's your job and you need to feed your kid, then you're a hero who cares for your family. Even if a product is made for marketing, it doesn't make the product less genuine. It only does so when the product is fake.
3:52 this is EXACTLY why we do pre start checks on equipment
That might be due to Harkonnen's fault too, leaving only old machines for the Atreides to use for spice harvesting.
@@clarevyn7478 If Duke Atreides checks the local pawn shops, he may be able to get some of them back.
The Harkonnen's sabotaged the equipment they left behind, and there was a conspiracy in place to ensure that the sabotage was never revealed.
everytime, no matter whats happening.
Doesnt matter if your doing a test run or warming the engine to make sure they still start, CHECK YOU EQUIPMENT.
From the usage of "we" I'm guessing you're a real-life rescue specialist or something adjacent, but for a hot second it does make it sound like you work in a carryall crew for spice harvesting on Arrakis
The Scope ,and Visual aspect in this movie is Epic
Seeing this movie in imax was incredible. Villanueve’s films are guaranteed to be beautiful and have amazing scores.
I really want an ornithopter dogfighting game now. That dive though...
Duke Leto should have stayed a pilot. That might have been his true calling. Family obligations waylaid that.
maybe but then we would not have the epic story, the first part emphasis on duty and obligation.
2:55 That noise is terrifying. It's like a tornado.
When I saw Dune part 1 in cinema I was utterly shocked by the details and music. It was shaking seats literally.
3:55 if you look closely at the carryall, you can see the crew inside through a window. Cool detail I saw after a rewatch
wow!
denis is a filmmaking god in my opinion. the first time i saw this i 'really liked it' but was also really overworked and tired and felt it was my least favorite of his films. recently rewatched it on 4k and now i'm obsessed. even my mom and grandma loved it and they had no interest in it at all. Dune: Part One> Entire Star Wars franchise. EAT IT
Denis said this is Star Wars for adults I think in one film Dune managed to be more epic than all 6 SW films
@@willcarlton3906 because Dune is a mature sci-fi universe. Many very mature Sci-Fi universes are based off of it, like Halo and 40k.
Dune was the pave wave for Star Wars films ..dune book came out 1968 I believe..so some Star Wars lore is based off dune and also game of thrones they say
Thats because Star Wars borrowed/copied a lot of references from Dune. But since Star Wars became popular worldwide, people thought Dune copied Star Wars. smh
I really liked "Enemy", movie that usually not loved by many. Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049 are some of the other of his great movies.
One of my favorite ships from the book was the ornithopter. I'm glad this movie finally got it right.
The video games did too.
I like how despite how far into the future Dune is they still talk like its a modern air traffic control at an airport.
The reason I like the dragonfly 'thopter design so much is because the sheer mechanical stresses on those wings imply a level of mechanical and materials engineering knowledge inconceivably far beyond our own, which makes perfect sense - the taboo against "thinking machines" and computers in the Known Universe leaves much more of their civilization's technological focus on mechanical and other forms of engineering.
Apart from that time the french built one.
In 1937
The Riout 102T Alérion.
@@dwgray9000 The wings of the Riout 102T were much wider, made of different materials (metal frames covered in fabric) and driven by a nominally 75HP engine (i.e. exponentially slower than what is shown in Dune). Not even close to the same thing from a materials science standpoint.
@@hettbeans you missed the point. The French, in 1937, had a working ornithopter. It was cutting edge at the time. You don't need carbon fiber, magic and unobtanium to make one. An anemic petrol engine, doped fabric and tube steel worked just fine.
But like most interwar french aircraft it was utter shit.
It did work, and was probably the inspiration for Frank Herbert. Along with Lawrence of Arabia.
The buterlian jihad? That sounds like the levellers trashing cotton mills.
@@hettbeans you might have missed the point. You don't need advanced technology to make an ornithopter. French aircraft technology would do it. And not the good post having nazis design stuff either. The pre ww2 french had totally lost the plot.
"Warning! Wormsign"
"Worm attack"
This scene is my favorite scene of all in Dune. It never ceases giving me goosebumps.
Never really understood why the balloon part wasn’t just attached to the harvester permanently, then there would be no need for stressing about whether a balloon was in the area, whether it would attach in time, whether the attachment would be successful. I’m guessing the reason is that if it fails, there is a chance for another nearby balloon to arrive and attach, however that is not what happened in this scene.
From what I gather you're correct about why it's separate. If there's a failure it's most efficient for another to show up to rescue to harvester. Especially now since the Harkonnens siezed most of them. The reason the failure happened in this scene (I believe) is to demonstrate that the Harkonnens removed most if not all of their harvesting equipment, and sabotaged most of what remained. That's why this malfunction was so surprising to even the regular workers, to us it would be like a wheel randomly flying off your car mid drive.
In the book, Leto actually asks why they don't have two on standby for each crawler, and Kynes starts to reply but gets cut off. It's likely they don't have enough experienced crew, and carryalls require pilots and dedicated aircraft maintenance crews. In the book, they are described as giant ornithopters - a design which wouldn't play well with the dust and vibration of constant spice harvesting.
@@TroySpace Kynes does actually get to respond after a bit, and he says they dont have enough extra equipment (i.e. not enough extra carryalls)
Look at the detail in the sand coming off the Harvester's tracks. Gorgeous movie
“We’ll find a way”
Then *silence* as the ornithopter drops 🤌
The thopter design in this is so good in this!
One of my favourite scenes in this movie!
This entire sequence was MASTERFUL. Denis Villenueve is a genius. I’m a douchebag for my lazy choice in words to describe this
The dad is such a chad
He's literally meant to be the biggest Chad in the universe. The reason he's a threat to the emperor is because he's so well liked in the galactic government, the emperor is worried he could turn everyone against him.
His soldiers are some of the strongest in the galaxy because they'll die for him, his whole deal is he inspires fanatic loyalty not through fear but through respect
He's literally the giga chad of the Dune universe
The Dragonfly Aircraft are the stars of the movie, so good in IMAX
When I saw this scene in IMAX I almost teared up a little. The music and visuals just really hit, which is why I'm still sad that the ost of them flying over the desert wasn't released in any of the official albums.
Why does Leto know how to pilot the ornithopter so well? Did he learn from his Star Wars days?
He wanted to be a pilot but his duties as Atreides heir got in the way. So he probably snuck in plenty of practice in between his other obligations
duke is a good pilot he mentions it to paul that it was his dream to be a pilot before duty called him.
the design of the vehicles in this film is really beautiful
Keep it up bro!
I have watch this video 20 times and I still love it.
I'll admit i picked up the book about ten years ago and stopped exactly at this chapter because i thought it was too slow paced for me. After watching this in theaters i will definitely be reading this again
The radio traffic in this scene is top-notch.
It first starts very routine--I imagine a Wormsign warning is nothing new for the crew, so other than their harvesting being interrupted they're not very worried.
At 3:20 though, one of the crewmembers asks about the Carryall -- he's still calm but you can feel the slight anxiety, since that Carryall is the lifeline for the entire crew.
And then at 3:40, the docking sequence starts. Everyone's calm but still serious--this is the most important moment, because failure to lift means there is no time for an alternative.
At 3:51 it all goes to hell--an anchor fails to deploy. The Harvester can't be airlifted without it, and you can *hear* the panick rising in the crew, and it serves to show us how grave things are.
All in all, the whole sequence could have been done without the chatter (or with just generic voice clips) without compromising the plot too much, but the acting and dialogue really helps give a sense of urgency and empathy with the Harvester crew. Very well done.
Worm sign... UNIT LOST!
Man, the moment after he says "We'll find a way" and drops down... amazing
harvester is under attack
This scene is perfection!
Сарай танк - новый уровень с прокачкой для эвакуации дронами 😅
the dive was used to gain some speed to get there faster. brilliant and not something i think was mentioned in the book.
3:02 "Contact in 5 minutes" if this video wasn't cut the worm actually hits directly at 8:02
This movie was one of my favorites
Beautiful movie
Oscar issac had gravitas as a ruler, i could watch a whole move of his heroics. I dont feel particularly anyway about timothy chalemet
I swear I've never seen something more dramatic than this
This is the scene that made me certain I would love this movie
this movie was an experience at the imax
Oscar Isaac is my favorite Leto of the various portrayals out there. Such a good job playing a good man on a march to the gallows.
Amazing wooden acting.
I'm currently reading the first book and just read this scene. I couldn't wait until I finished it to check it out
Captain picard said "a big one".
I noticed in the original soundtrack by Hans Zimmer the track title, "Ripples in the Sand" leaves out the first parts of this clip. Anyone know where I can find the full film version of this?
It's on the expanded soundtrack. Flight To Spice Field. I was searching for it too. Its on CZcams
I loved every bit of this movie and kinda judged negatively everyone who found this movie boring. I havent seen a single new movie with them. I do feel they couldn’t appreciate it for missing to watch the movie in a movie hall. I saw this movie once in a regular cinema hall and later in a 4D imax hall
I so have to watch the new dune movies
I loved the original ones
Absolutely Magnificent ❤
Safety factors and backups are very important boys, even 10000 years into the future. Poor maintenance is understandable in a world like Arrakis.
Duke leto clearly had a gift with eyesight like that. I imagine him in a fighter would be a terror for the harkonnens.
One of the best movies❤❤❤
I grew up on the Oregon coast where frank Herbert got his inspiration. The largest continuous sand dunes in the USA .
The introduction began with Harkonnen harvesting operations at night. The scene didn’t sacrifice any imagery under the amber glow of Krelln, the first moon of Arrakis. No more than Paul’s nightly dreams of Chani.
The Duke’s inspection would have been more consistent with harvesting operations had it taken place after dusk. The entire planet is the Duke’s fiefdom. Night is a constant resource somewhere on Arrakis used to assist the harvest of spice.
By the turquoise light of the second moon, Aaron, the worms approach would have been even more foreboding. The powerful star’s blinding glare by itself drowns out the contrast of shadows. It’s raw power would have hindered unprotected vision. Evading the glare and heat of the day serves inspections much more effectively.
I agree that a nightime version of the sequence would be splendid. I imagine gargantuan spotlights fitted to the harvester and to spotter aircraft, alongside infrared and night vision sensors.
However the book scene occurs in sunlight.
I take it to be early morning, before "the heat of the day" has been generated.
duke is this is like nuts, from water to desert
Did anyone else notice the spice harvesting machines were different from the ones the Harkonnon were using and they also had patrols walking along side the spice harvester. It looked a lot different then what the Atreides were using before the 🪱 came and ate it.
The harkonnons left only old or broken down harvesters for the atreides to use when they left the planet, so I would assume the newer ones would look different
As Dune RTS (Dune 2000/ OpenRA Dune) game player in PC, the harvester scene meant so much :)
🎼Old Spice, take a look what you’ve done. You made a blue-eyed man right out of my son.
This track wasn’t included in the released soundtracks :(
I love when he dances in a bar in Thailand.
Im reading the book and looking up scenes as i read through them and ghe changes they makes are so interesting!
In the book the worm toom 25 min to arrive and they were already well up in the air and even waited to see the worm in action
I fucking love this scene in the movie
Duke was noble and dedicated to his men in stark contrast to the Baron
Those copters, in that dust, would be a maintenance nightmare.
Duke Leto use Byakugan Observation Haki
2 years old!? What i miss
I swear that at 4:00 I hear a little bit of Subnautica music mixed in there.
same
The juice …the precious juice
You should see this scene in I-MAX Laser. It is amazing the whole movie !!!
This is one of those scenes that is cool but I have a hard time with the conceit that the lift vehicle doesn't seem to have any redundancy - just one anchor fails and they can't lift the crawler? Given the time sensitivity and risk associated with failure, you'd think they'd design extra anchors to prevent such mishaps.
This scene really highlights the sci-fi aspects of Dune which sets it apart from our reality, which is that it has aristocrats that are actually useful.
This guy should be on a council for any sci-fi big screen adaptation.
Can someone link me to the soundtrack in this scene? Can’t seem to find this particular piece
The only thing I don’t like is that with safety factors of critical life saving machinery that extraction ship should be able to lift that harvester with 2 of those tethers and not need all 4 to deploy correctly. And they might even be required to come in pairs to aid in recovery in case there is any type of malfunction. But of course it’s a movie and things have to go wrong at the exact time they are watching from the ornithopters. Maybe something else could have happened like a radio miscommunication or jamming or something, I don’t know.
Kynes: If you get a little higher you’ll have a better view.

the dei is so ponderous.

in the book , the carryall never came
Anyone else wonders about this strange helicopters? The vibration must be insane in this lolol
I understand that concept artists and director wanted to draw more cool designs, but what is the logic behind each Great House having it's own harvester design? Spacing Guild charges extreme amounts of money or Spice for transporting armies and machinery, so there is huge park of machines for each Great House on Arrakis, waiting for their owners to take control of the planet?
