      Hitting sync is fine but you wont get much further than your local club. Using the sync button means your putting in limations into your mix. It would mean you would shy a way from trying to mix and match BPM's and keeping to the same bpm isnt very creative

      There’s no shame in hitting the sync.. I’ve mixed for 20 years & although beatmatching becomes second nature.. not having to worry so much allows you to be so much more creative within the mixes
      When I first started I used to think once you’ve mastered beat matching you’d never have to worry again. How very wrong lol

    Your videos are great and very informative, however, I need to make a big suggestion to you. I think it would be a lot more beneficial for people if the first thing they saw was you actually performing whatever task you're making a tutorial about, and then follow that by explaining it more properly. I think people will watch your videos a lot more if you did it that way.

    I like how he doesn't edit the video like some other deejays and 99% of tutorials about anything on youtube. These videos are authentic..
    and you showed how to get a song back on beat and improvise if this was a real gig.
    Now i will say for real gigs I love to freestyle being a hiphop deejay and some tracks i may not have ever played or mixed together before. That's my style, an authentic natural deejay and scratching.
    But for certain things like acapellas and instrumentals i'd practice so i know what goes with what, and match the bpm correctly.

  • @nic9283
    @nic9283 Před 8 lety +35

    The sync button is such a trivial part of mixing and DJs still make a big deal of it. It takes up about 0.1% of the DJing process and yet staying away from it is advice that's constantly rammed down the throats of many bedroom jocks. All the sync button does is adjust the track's BPM to match the master clock's BPM. That's it. You can achieve the same result by using the tempo fader, but this takes extra time and, more importantly, depending on your tempo sensitivity settings you might not be able to land the exact decimal point meaning you're forced to settle with an inaccurate BPM. By hitting sync, there's no need to reach for the tempo fader, and the exact BPM is landed every time in under a second. Going about it the long way requires no extra skill, it's just an annoyance and contributes nothing. If, with sync, your mix sounds too mechanical, just turn your jog wheel 1mm or 2mm to throw the tracks slightly out of phase - this imperfection will give a more natural flow to the mix and will minimise any cancellation effects that often occur. I forgot to mention that with sync on, you can also change the BPM of two (or more) tracks simultaneously - try doing that with two tempo faders :)

    Why not beat match?
    I'm not a dj but surely the whole point of mixing tracks together is so they match the bpm. It cannot be good to be off slightly, people will detect that.
    I don't think a club manager gives two shits about a sync button, all they care about is getting people through the door. Play a blinding set with variety in the mix to keep up the interest.
    Repeating 'satisfaction' one hundred times will bore people.

I've seen the few videos you did about trance many years ago, but I was wondering if you have some tips & tricks on how to mix trance with a BPM from about 130. I also feel kinda bad having to let one track almost play entirely before bringing the next one in. Cheers!

    • @timwood8728
      @timwood8728 Před 8 lety +1

      You see I think trance is one of those genres that should let the songs play out
      Not quick mixing like electro house
      Trance music is usually 6,7,8 or even 10 + minutes long and the structure of the songs are designed to be played.
      Although with trance the transitions between songs can be 2 minutes + in length so beat mixing has to be good and also work the eqs.
      It's not about playing 40 tracks an hour

    • @MitchVH
      @MitchVH Před 8 lety +1

      +elvewizzy Thats what I've been trying to do lately. Using some clever cue-points to skip a decent part of the track, without losing the essence of it. Mixing on breakdowns seems possible aswell, if they're in key atleast.

    • @MitchVH
      @MitchVH Před 8 lety

      +Ironlion NLinCS I think you're exactly right about that. Although I try to keep it under 5 minutes per track, without transitions counted. Most of the times it feels right to just mix the first and last 32 bars of a track, but I'm afraid that gets boring easily and people might lose interest.

    • @mikefallon4799
      @mikefallon4799 Před 8 lety

      joaquin lozano It's more a "honour" thing, because with vinyls and turntables beatmatching was very hard and now old style DJ's are still convinced that you need to manually beatmatch in order to be a good DJ, I don't use sync button only because it's funnier to beatmatch but when I use equipment that I'm not used to I sync everything (because it's better to hit the button than to make the tracks sound bad)

    No respectable dj should want to hit that sync button. And it's not about BPM lining up so much as it is the flow and how the tracks fit imo. I disagree that you need to start with a banger. It depends on when you are playing in the night but if you are not the headliner and especially if you are an opener, you may not want to start with an absolute banger. You want to be able to lead into the set and shape it into something, imo. You definitely don't want to bang it out hard before the headliner. You want to keep being brought back, not overshadow by trying to be HEARD as opposed to listened to, know what I mean? I like djs who start with something that would be an ID as opposed to something instantly recognizable, although I suppose it depends on the night and my mood (If it's a throwback night where people are playing classic cuts on vinyl then I understand starting with a banger).

      Mightydubkat I wish there were more people out there like yourself mate. Nowadays there isn't enough unknown music being played. Clubs in Asia are filled with arrogant EDM DJs and even when I manage to find something different, it's always deep or tech house and I recognise half of the tunes anyway. Nowhere seems to play downtempo and build up to a faster beat like Nick Warren or whoever.

    • @VinylStash
      @VinylStash Před 6 lety

      Agree 100%, I've been DJing for coming on 30 years now, and while the night and crowd your playing to dictate what your playing, at the same time you should of been booked for the music and style you play. I see every set as a journey, adventure if you like, with many stops along the way, I don't want to be at the final destination 10 minutes into a set. I found over the years of both playing out and booking DJ's for my own nights that a really top quality warm up DJ is both hard to find and also very much under appreciated, they set the tone, mood and atmosphere for the rest of the night ahead.
      I get the point that the video was trying to get across, that it's hard to sell yourself to a promoter in the first 10-15 mins of a mix that's if they even listen that far. I just think he tried to do too much to soon and had the opposite desired effect, a well selected opener with maybe an acapella dropped over the top would of been better than that, and to compare DMC turntablists to the style he was attempting and track selection is, well, apples & oranges.

    Hi Ellaskins! Love the videos! Could you do a video going over how to transition from like a 128ish bpm house track to a 174ish bpm drum and bass track? Thank you!

    • @Smoothitis
      @Smoothitis Před 8 lety

      +elvewizzy < What this guy said. Additionally, make sure the tracks are in a compatible key and the turntables are at the same pitch. Depending on the track playing you might be able loop part of the breakdown as long as there is no drum beat, to help with the transition. I think Ellaskins has already done several videos on this topic.

    Hey elleskins could you teach me how to transit trap (75) and house (128) music constantainously?

    • @KadenceMusicOfficial
      @KadenceMusicOfficial Před 8 lety

      +Air AQW You could drop the trap track down to 64 BPM, which would mix with 128.. It's called mixing in half-time (128 divided by 2 = 64). Also, you can try mixing on the breakdown.. once the playing song hits the breakdown on the 1 count, play the next track's breakdown as well .. fading one song out and the other song in. Hard to explain in words, but give it a shot!

  • @DJDeCain

    If I had a club, and you played like that, you would be kicked of stage in 10 minutes... Why did you tab the tempo on the DJM900? Use your rekordbox quantize, and the tempo info from the RJ45 cable in the mixer from the player.

  • @TomRob1604

    any idea what the tap button does on the mixer? seen people use it at venues but never known what it is

    • @stephenfitzgerald3027
      @stephenfitzgerald3027 Před 8 lety

      +Tom Robinson Hey, its a way of tapping the bpm yourself instead of using the auto, can just make it a little more accurate, or if you wanted the effect at half time. Have a play
