Dawn, one of the reasons I really enjoy watching your videos is that the look for your home is achievable. There are other video hosts/hostesses record their videos with top of the line kitchens as their backgrounds, or "the magazine looking" living room with all things the lastest and most stylish, distract me. They make me want what they have or similar. If you know what I mean. Nevertheless, I appreciate you being down to earth, love your laughter, love your attitude of life in general. Thank you all the way from Nova Scotia.
"sometimes we make these projects in our head bigger than they actually are" yes preach! This is such a good excuse for me thanks for reminding me Just Do It!
My spices lay in a drawer, in alphabetical order. I love it.
I separate my spices into two containers one savory and one sweet , it helps a lot to be able to just grab the correct basket rather than shuffling through them all, years again before doing this I had the chili powder ready to sprinkle on the cinnamon rolls 😱
In my defense chili and cinnamon are both red looking lol
I do this too! I made the swap a few months ago, so all sweet or baking things in one cupboard, and oils, vinegars and spices etc in a 'savoury' cupboard!
I love that you kept your white appliances. Your kitchen looks so cute!
Hi I am trying to use down my food. I panicked earlier this year and bought a lot of food. My cabinets are going to look like yours eventually. I have cut down on my dishes I like that. I did quarantine them because they match my set of dishes. Since I decluttered I had room to store them in an upper cabinet. That makes me happy. Thank you for all your help. I enjoy your videos so much and I watch them more than once. Also two of my friends have been able to let go of some of there stuff. They say I inspired them. That’s because you inspired me.
That didn't take long at all! Glad to see your kitchen is finished. I like to cook and try many different ethnic foods so have lots of spices. I like uniformity too. So my 2 tips: if you are going to use mason jars, go all in on the wide mouth version (as a bonus they are easy to clean and the lids/rings fit all sizes). It comes in 1/2 pint, pint, quart and 1/2 gal and all can be bought at either Target or Walmart (or Amazon). If you don't like the two piece lids, I saw on Amazon some solid stainless steel one piece lids with a silicon gasket which will not rust and look very minimalistic. I use them for bulk dry goods, freezing leftovers, refrigerating left overs, salads, soups, hummus, you name it. They have replaced plasticware in our kitchen. If something is too bulky I have a few of the click/clack glassware with the snap on lids. 2nd tip: I love Pollaner's All Fruit jam so over the years have saved any jars as they were emptied. I am a member of a coop so I use it to buy in bulk (they have lots of variety and I buy just the amount I want of spices, teas, coffees as well as many grocery items). I now have 4 trays of 20ish jars of spices each (I know, its a lot). As I use them up I reflect on whether I will continue to need the particular spice. So I'm not just buying spices to have a "complete set". My spices have sat in a drawer and currently have a dedicated home in a small hall cabinet. In the trays they fit 2 trays to a shelf so they take up an average amount of space.
I enjoyed watching this! Tip for spices: Put them in alphabetical order on turntables. It makes it easier to find them, and when your kids help you cook they can find the spices too. Also, I put a small circle sticker on each of my spices with the expiration date. (EXP. June ‘20) This is how I make sure I’m using my spices when they’re fresh.
I actually put those stickers on everything that’s perishable. It may seem tedious, but it saves me a lot of time and money. So many times I’ve looked in the cupboard, looked at the sticker and realized an item was about to expire, and quickly used it up.
Also.....your crockpot is another tool that’s good for saving money and time!
I placed all my spices in a rectangular basket on tracks in my lower cabinet. I have one for baking too. I labeled all the jars on top so I can see what each spice jar contains without pulling them all out.
Thank you for the encouragement and making it look easy 😉
Dawn you are an amazing inspiration!! I love your videos! I have watched most of them since I met you less than 2 weeks ago!! 😉. I have tried Flylady for 13 years and have just struggled! We really could be BEST friends!! And our husbands could really be BEST friends....they are totally alike!!!🤣. I am just surprised he said all that on video!!!😂 Thank you for opening your heart and home and showing us how we have the capacity to LOVE more when we have less stuff around us! God Bless You!! ❤️ BTW...I watch your videos multiple times each day and find new encouragement and strength to make my home a more loving peaceful place!!!! And I really like watching you and your sister...I could listen to both of you talk all day!!!! Hugs and prayers....and please keep up your inspiring work!!!!🎉
Dawn, your kitchen looks great! I love having extra room in my cabinets, too! Thanks for letting us see your good work!❤️👍🏻
This is a big help as I am re-doing our kitchen and really want it to work better. Thank you!
Thanks for all the organizing motivation 😀👍
The comments were off when I watched it this morning... Wanted to tell you how nice it looks and I loved it when you said that we make projects appear in our heads bigger than they actually are! So true!
Great video Dawn! I found your channel about 2 weeks ago and I absolutely LOVE it! You are so down to earth and practical....someone that I can relate to🙂I’m binge watching all of your videos!!! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the tips!
I cleaned off our counters the other week after watching your videos. I love the open space now. I also love not having the cabinets jam packed. Thank you for your videos.
Love your videos, I live in Florida and we are bee keepers. Buy local honey it would make your tea taste so much better! Raw is better because they don't heat it to make it clearer.
I use my crockpot weekly. It's such a time saver. Give it a try
I like your example at the end about deferred decision making. I also like your approach of deciding "what to keep" vs what to get rid of. It gives me a new perspective when trying to simplify my home. Makes it so much easier and less stressful. Thank you.
Looks so good! Thanks for inspiring us again, Dawn!
Thank you Savanna!!
I just love ALL your videos! Thank you!
Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate that!!!
So I found eight Tupperware Lids that did not have plasticware to fit. Your videos have me cruising through my kitchen now. Two drawers one cabinet and a countertop√ TBC tomorrow..3am comes around way to fast! Good night🥱
So satisfying to see the end result! Deferred Decision Making - still working on that when decluttering! 😄💗Robin
Its a learned skill that needs to be practiced ;)
For spices, I love having a 10” lazy Susan. Makes it so easy to spin and find the spice you need while keeping the cabinet organized! 😊
Esther Perkins Me too! I love using one for condiments too. Vinegar, oil, etc!
I need to get one of these for my cabinet! Would make my life so much easier 🧚♀️
I’ve been doing this for decades. One for baking spices/ingredients, one for savory cooking and one in the fridge for small jars/containers that get lost in the back...just spin around to the front to access instead of digging out a bunch of items to get to the one you need.
Atomic Blonde
AND...I’m lazy! 😛
Oh that's a great idea!!!
Just found your channel and I LOVE it!! Your content has helped me so much in just one night!
That's so cool to hear Angela!! Best wishes and Thank you!
This is very helpful, Dawn! I picked up some ideas from watching what you do in your kitchen. One item that works so well for me is a two- tiered, lazy suzan spice rack. I keep the savory spices on one level and the sweet ones on the other. It gets used almost daily with our cooking & baking! 😊
Thanks for sharing Dawn. Lovely to see how your kitchen came nicely together. Tom did a great job!
As for the tips, I put spices is small rectangular baskets(more like the one you would use in fridge organisation) and signed them from A to Z on the front using sticky labels. E.g the spices in this basket are from A to H, the spices in next one are H to Z. Depends what you cook. So when I cook I just take the basket out and get the spice out. It might be strange for someone but I cook in a rush so hate digging through the shelves to find spice right at the back. Also jars of the brand I use have black plastic tops and I used white marker pen to write the names at the top :)
Yes looks all in order now! Beautiful job with the kitchen by the way! Looks like a great place for the family to make memories and spend time in! I know what you mean about the jar! I had a basket that was kind of the same story. It can definitely get challenging and cluttery sometimes when I decide not to decide deferred decision on items. 😅
Yes! My aim is always to get my cabinets only 80% full. 👍
Great video!
Love your kitchen!
Thank you Shannon!!
Going from a set of 8 dishes and silverware down to 6 has really helped. I want to reduce down to a set of 4 of everything when I feel ready. Why are we so afraid?? I also switched from storing my spices in the cabinet to a drawer laying down. Game changer! You can see every spice you have at once!
This video was so helpful, ty!
Great video! Thanks for sharing!🤗
Thank you Lisa!!!
I really enjoyed this. Our kitchen is still half built.....that's been since Christmas!!! I am totally going to re-minimise my food and crockery shelves. You have motivated me! xx
Oh I bet you're getting so anxious for them to be done Emma, its tough living in a construction zone!!
Wow this looks great☺️ I’m going to make my own home look JUST like this 😂😍😍
Just watched this video, I not only organized my capnets but refrigerator also. Like your videos.
Thank you for your very useful channel
Tip for you: small lazy Susan for spice jars and in the fridge 🙂🌻
Great points! Looks wonderful-and yes, I love being able to move items around in my cabinets too! When they were overstuffed it was so hard not to create an avalanche!👍 LOVE your cake plates!! So versatile. And I got rid of crock pot bc my pressure cooker has crockpot function...just an idea!
Yes, I never thought about that with the instant pot and crock pot!!
I love your baking basket with handles- I am also 5’2 and rarely bake. Also the plastic little tray for the sticky stuff! Brilliant!
Also I’ve found having simply organized cabinets makes it easier for kids to help push dishes away which is my least favorite kitchen chore 😄
Yes, amen!!!
Dawn, you are so right when you said we often put off jobs that really don’t take that long to complete. I am in the process of moving after being in my home for 24 years. So much stuff gets accumulated, even when I too am a minimalist at heart. It’s a big move from Wisconsin to Texas. I only want to take what I’ll use. No sense moving a lot of unnecessary items!
As always, thank you for your inspiration & your sweet spirit sharing your ideas with us!
24 years, oh yes! No matter how intentional you are you can't help but accumulate over that much time! BEST WISHES on your journey and move! After this winter I kind of wish we were moving to Texas ;)
Dawn, thank you!
My neighbors moved across town after 26 years in their house. Then the husband brought back a truckload to the Goodwill in my area and a truckload to fill up the garbage cans on our street. The wife couldn't decide at the time they moved so they initially took it all with them. Don't be my neighbors.
Loved it, thanks and it really helped. Congrats on new Kitchen too :)
Glad to hear this Karen--thank you!!
I have a tip for getting into the back of those two cabinets at the end over near the table. I have a very similar situation where mine are at the end of the row of cabinets and the hubby put door on the side as well as the front. Mine is a little bit deeper. This way I get to the items in the back! I love it!! It has made a world of difference for me! I do not have a big island, though! That is wonderful!
Ahhh yes!!!! I love the sweet & spicy tea, it’s the best! 🤗
I just found that tea. Love it!
Thanks for the encouragement. I need to go thru canned goods that we won't eat. I'm having a hard time parting with all my casserole dishes. I may just store in upper cabinet and not worry. Also have at least 20 cookbooks from over the years from different group fundraisers. Some were my grandmothers....but I Google recipes.
I am honored to be mentioned in your video! ❤️❤️❤️ I am reminded of the library rule quite often in my own home.😁
What a great rule! I love this! Thank you for sharing so we can all benefit 💖
It's such a great way of thinking about it!! Thanks for sharing it Loretta!!!
On your jar...lol ...this is how I decide. "Someone has to get the deal of the century at the thrift store, so I can now be the benefactor of it:...that seems to make it easier for me, to think someone else will find it on a shelf and say, "oh this is so neat, just what I need"...out it goes. easy peazy.
That is the best tea!!
I "Konmari-ed" my kitchen a few weeks ago...and it feels SO good (I got rid of FIVE boxes of dishes and small appliances that were rarely, if ever, used). Your cabinets look wonderful but...the package of napkins is UPSIDE DOWN!! :D (Yes, I am THAT picky! If there are words on something, they have to be right side up. lol)
Hahahaha, that's funny about the napkins!! And that is AWESOME about your kitchen, WAY TO GO!!!! :) :) :)
You are definitely talking to younger moms. We have 4 grown kids now and last year the last 2 got married. The first two have 4 children each. So just our immediate family is 18 and counting so you will be putting those dishes back in the cabinet. Find forks and spoons at the flea market cause you are definitely going to need them. Your kitchen will fill up again. It’s a good thing! ❤️
It’s funny how watching someone organize makes me want to do the same. Actions truly speak louder than words sometimes 😊
That is my favorite tea too !
I like the idea of just enough dishes for one day. And of just enough groceries for your meal plan. I was amazed when you said in the other video that too much groceries can be overwhelming. Look at your cabinets with just the right amounts of canned goods, etc! Now for me to get started......
I found that a lazy Susan is great for organizing spices in my cabinet. Easy to spin and get what I need.
I love that tea as well😊
hi what brand makes that tea? what store do you buy it from? thank you
I have significantly simplified my kitchen over the past three years. Pots anf pans have been reduced to what I actually use, and it is still too much by many othrrs standards... but as I have learned from this channel, I have my own standard and recognized what I really use and enjoy. Same with pantry items and spices... spices I have reduced huge! I can live noe by season all, paprika, chili powder, onion powder, garlic parsley salt, italian seasoning, and salt. Now, condiments are in a lazy susan, and are oil, cider cinegar, balsamic vinegar, ketchup, soysauce, bbq sauce. In addition to clove, cinnamon and nutmeg for breakfast and baking.
This is so awesome Leyda! Way to go!!
I paused the video and went and cleaned out my cabinets!!!
CONGRATULATIONS ON REACHING 54,000 SUBSCRIBERS!!!! 😁 God bless your socks off!!!! We're also staying in Arizona...Mesa. 😁
Thank you so much Vicki! I appreciate that so much!!!
Yes congratulations I’m also in Arizona Gilbert!!!
I don’t like tea, but I want to like it so I have found one and that is Stash Peppermint tea😊. I will have to try this one too, thanks!
Haha, yes, that's just like me, I'll have to try the peppermint tea, I could use a touch more variety ;)
Love your ideas!! Have you thought about spice blends? I mix the spices. I use a blend for eggs that we use in the morning and only get one jar out instead of the basket I use to use.
Yes, that's such a good point! I've been intending to make some but obviously haven't gotten that far!
Love the subway tiles,I’m 5’1 and my husband is 6’ 4” sooooo he always is asking where’s this or where’s that- lol it’s because the low stuff is at my eye level and not his so his misses it! Haha
We save money by making lots of meals that we double and freeze or we bake in double or triple batches, so my baking section of the pantry is large!! Lol
That was such a good point about the canister - do I really want to try to find a use for this every few months when I come across it? :)
I edited my cupboards this month as well and I ended up saving money by eating out of our pantry!
Yes, that's so good!!
Same here!
I use a jar like the old coffee jar for my epson salt in the bath room
It's a small enough jar to still fill your coffee and put in the drawer. I like everything to be fancy lol even if no one sees it, I put everything in jars !!!
Your kitchen is soo pretty! I love your earrings too! Mind sharing where you got them? Have a blessed day!
you and your husband is very simular to my husband and I he is 6'- and I am 5' LOL we get some looks. sometimes... LOVE IT
Oh that's great! Have you ever had a tall girl tell you that "she's tired of all of the short girls taking the tall guys"??? I couldn't tell if she was kidding or not!! ;)
You can keep items in the cabinet above the fridge?? Kidding, sort of. I just realized that mine are completely empty, but I've been trying to figure out what to do with the food processor and whatnot, because I want to use their current cabinet for the kids' stuff. Thanks for the reminder that those cabinets exist. 😉 Your kitchen looks great! Love the colors you chose.
I love your new kitchen!! Can you convince my husband, it will be ok when I am done purging the kitchen and tearing down cabinets??? He gets stressed everytime I get rid of more, or say I done with that cabinet, take it down! Im loving the new easy functionality and how easy its gettign to clean, but he hates change.
Lol...give him time ;)
That’s my fave tea too. I have two boxes lol
So cool..☺☺😂😂☕☕
I also have a "tall kitchen" my husband is 6" 5 And I'm 5" and a bit. So alot of the stuff I don't use regularly is on the higher shelves. Next time I know to give myself more cupboards I can reach!!
Hahaha, its taken 10 years but I'm learning ;)
Since I don’t bake that often I put all my baking spices together. I put all the powders and salts together like onion, garlic and celery. I would have thought about using the canister in the bathroom or by the door for keys.
I put huge turn tables from bed n bath, in two shelves in the refrigerator and two big ones in the pantry, now I turn them and find everything I need.
I couldn’t tell if that coffee canister was made of glass but I tend to hang onto any glass jars I have for general food storage eg nuts, sugar etc in preference to storing them in plastic containers or the bags they come in.
Yes it is glass! Its a little small for baking ingredients, but many recommended putting tea in it which would look nice!
We are a family of 4 and for over 2 yrs keep a set of 4 dishes and cups only if we have and the only guests 3-4xs A mth that come over (is the father of my 3 kids and my oldest daughters boyfriend) so an extra 2 for them are put away in the bottom cabinets where I put the seasonal stuff soooo much better cause even if it gets crazy I can wash the sets in less than 15 min or while I’m actually cooking our meals
My favorite kitchen cabinet tip that i learned on another channel is using a small lazy Susan for my spices. That way i don’t have to scoot or remove them I just spin it and i keep the ones I use most frequently on the lower shelf and the others on a higher shelf. I did the same with oils and vinegars. The lazy susans are around $10 at bed bath and beyond and they always seem to have a coupon to make it even cheaper :)
You kitchen looks awesome! And you are looking so slim :)
I have seen you tubers take two round dollar store cake pans and put marbles between to make a lazy susan.
THANK YOU Jen! And LOVE this tip! I was thinking more baskets, but you're right, a lazy susan would be so much more practical!!
@@mk-sw9ow oh that's a great idea!!!
Love your cabinets and ideas. So even in the dead of winter , you don't stock extra food?
Hey Dawn! Someone may have already asked this but do you store dishes for entertaining somewhere else? We are a family of 5 but a few times a month we invite family over for dinner and end up with 9 or 10 people dining at once.
How do you organize your medicine cabinet? I keep some in the cupboards and some upstairs but I need some new ideas!
You and your husband are just adorable.
Mine are all black and stainless steel. But i struggle with deciding on Pfaltzgraff dishes.
I traded (most of) my cookware for an Instant Pot plus I got rid of some bake ware I never use. That left a lot of room inside my cabinets.
It may have come up already elsewhere, but I am just discovering your channel. What did you use for cabinet cleaning? Have you done a video about washing cabinets?
I love the “frequently used” spice basket..How do you organize the rest of your spices?
Right now they're just in rows in the spice cabinets, but I think it would be nice to get baskets for all of them so that they stay contained :)
So what do you do when you have friends or family over for dinner what do you put there meal on
Do you keep dishes you use for family gatherings or do you all just use disposable? I downsized to one style of plates (white) and have 12 settings minus coffee cups for nice meals for those special o assigns.
What to do when a spouse says they want extra set of plates and silverware out in case we ever have (special?)guests? I got him to let me put some plates in storage but he doesn't want to do that with the silverware that are taking up a lot of extra space in our drawer. It was a wedding gift as well (so were all of our plates and silverware) and was given to us as special / fancy silverware. We have some storage downstairs but it's mostly full and random. No labels so i don't really know what is down there.
Your kitchen redo is beautiful. It’s bright n cheery love it. Now here’s my question as this horrible top cabinet has caused so much stress I want pull it off the wall. It’s that caddy corner cabinet that is deep n angled oddly shaped n I just can’t figure out how to manage it. I haven’t reorganized my cabinets yet but did do my first purge before Christmas last year. Any ideas as I just hate it’s oddness n depth. I’m 5’2” also. Lol
I have seen corner cabinets like you've described in other people's kitchens, and wondered how they work with it, especially when they are usually dark holes. The first thing I would do is paint it white and put some lighting in there. Then select items that you use often enough to keep them handy and make sure you can reach them easily using trays, bins or baskets especially if they have parts.
We bought a house with a corner lazy-susan cabinet and currently I am storing my pressure cooker and steamer/stockpot on the bottom shelf. The top shelf has small appliances (rice cooker/steamer), attachments for a stand mixer, and a rotary grater in a bin. Eventually, I want to remove the door and lazy-susan and put in a single shelf so the cabinet can hold the large pots and some other large items on the "floor" as well. (Some appliances are too heavy to be lifting all the time, so the stand mixer stays on the counter.)
P. S. Because top shelves are a challenge to reach, I prefer to store large, yet lightweight/somewhat unbreakable items on them.
Where did you find your tea? Could you please share a link? Thank you
Where do you keep your cake pans and cupcake tins?
I noticed you didn't have any dead corner space in your new upper cabinets - any suggestions on what to put there?
I put a turn table in cupboard for spices
Ah, that's a great idea!!
New to watching you! Do you sell most of the items you get rid of or just donate?
I feel like I need to re-do my spice drawer right now! 😂 Is your kitchen cabinet paint still holding up well? We're going to update our kitchen soon and I was showing my husband the stuff you used!
So far no chips or any ware!!!
I have trouble storing small and large plastic containers. I don’t love owning plastic but better used than in landfill. Does anyone have any great ideas for them?
I arrange all my spices alphabetically because I've discovered that I really dislike hunting for something. Now it's fast and direct.
We have an old farmhouse with huge spacious cabinets, I want to move our extra company dishes to another spot because we end up using them when our regular dishes get dirty then the sink piles up with dishes but my husband wants to keep them there because we have the space for them and he says the cabinets look empty without the extra dishes ; any advice?
I love this and your tips! I recently decluttered and organized my parent's kitchen cupboards it was so much fun lol I made a video of it on my channel :)
Oh I'll have to check it out, that's awesome! I want to help my mom with hers, just waiting for her to give me the green light ;)
@@TheMinimalMom I hope you do! hopefully you get to help her too!
