I absolutely loved your story Rusty, thanks for sharing! It was enlightening and inspiring to hear your experiences and how it changed your worldview. I really hope we get more stories, perhaps interviews of other lifelong mechanics and riders?

I appreciate your story. I was serving in an area where the risk of bike theft was higher, so I walked or bussed everywhere. We were not given bikes. But, now that I know how to wrench on bikes, I help out the local missionaries with their bikes. Too many of the missionaries just don't know how to maintain their bikes. It is too bad to see even the littlest points of maintenance forgotten.

Great story. I started by owning a bottom of the line Norco Mountaineer . I used it for offroading and I had to very swiftly learn to fix my own bike and watch others as i did not have the cash . About a year later a shop i hung out at daily hired me as i sold more bikes in 2 weeks than all the employees and owners combined.

@@CoolBikeProjects Thank you for the reply. and yes i was ecstatic indeed. I was selling GT's in 1996 and that was the heyday for them . We test rode all built bikes and all cables were pre stretched so the free tune up after purchase was rarely used except by those who just wanted to be at a shop.
