Laser engraving (etching) stainless steel with budget 15W laser engraver (Ortur Laser Master)

  • In my review of Ortur Laser Master (15W) I tried to engrave some metal, but without success. Then two comments suggested to me to use mustard on the surface. First, I thought it is a joke, but then I found an interesting article, where somebody successfully used mustard and vinegar for stainless steel engraving (or better word is etching). I am also trying again the marker provided with the laser, since this is recommended in the manual.

    Igor I think you didn't notice some safety issues that can hurt you in the end. Your goggles are clearly not sufficient to block all the blue light. You should see the glow of the material you are cutting but no blue light at all. You need OD6 or more make sure your goggles blocks 450nm. Even diffuse reflections can damage your eyes, and in this case, it's far more dangerous because you are etching a reflective surface. When I etch metal, i start the job and step way back away from the machine so the light has enough distance to diverge before hitting my face.
    P.S the mustard trick is very cool. I'll try it soon

    Quickest way is still to spray it black or use a marker and etch with Ferric oxide or use the vinegar and electrically etch it, goes deeper and is more permanent

    • @antipode_ghost
      @antipode_ghost Před 3 lety

      Do you mean etch the paint/marker with a laser to form resist, and then etch in Ferric Oxide? I'm curious about the quality/resolution such method can produce. I need to etch lettering in brass (letters about 3 mm tall), but the results need to look fairly well. I'm looking for the simplest way to do that.

      @@antipode_ghost Black paint, one coat, two if needed, laser on max power so it pulverizes the paint, if you are vector engraving one pass should be enough, you will see the metal shine through, raster engraving two passes, clean off the residue and you can either put the oxide where you engraved or dip the whole plate if everything else is covered up, my largest project was a DIN A1 Copper plate with a picture and text, was etched fine and colorfilled and is hanging on a wall somewhere
