Tom is an absurdly excellent guitarist and teacher!
Great video, thanks!
As far as wrist technique goes, using a collapsed rest or a bent wrist it’s not a matter of using one or the other but developing both styles so that you can be a versatile guitarist. A bent wrist will give you more power especially when you pull from the large knuckles. A collapsed wrist is more delicate and sometimes preferable. Also using a bent wrist technique can be much faster
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video! i am a semi-beginner at guitar, more of a bass player so it is fun to increase my guitar knowledge!
Yeesss, fingerpicking tips! Ten tips no less!!! Thank-you Tom for these very helpful suggestions, going to go practice now to get to the next level. Patience, Practice, Perseverance!
10 tips for your 10 fingertips.. I like it. I had a sense of "deja view", as I watched your 28 April video "10 Fingerpicking Tips". I hope they do well.. Another option is to use finger nail hardener. I use clear Sally Hanson nail hardener, applied twice thickly. It take 2-3 days to set up hard and dry. Then I use a light emery board to dullen the shine and keep the tips even, along with a nail file. Cheers!
I oh so wish I had fingers I could do that with... I crushed my thumb back in 1993 and it split the bone under the fingernail, also blew out all the fat in the pad of my thumb like a pimple. I lost the nail but not till after they used what was left of my nail to sew my pad back on. My fingers are large and flat, and they won't even fit between the strings!! I'm not fat, 6' and 165lbs, just have huge, powerful hands, (thanks dad!!!), that are just not condusive to finger picking... I can't even use the slide on finger picks as I have to expand them so far that they just fall off :-( You play so beautifully, thank you for sharing these wonderful tips!!!
I'm so glad this came across on my feed! You play with great control, thus making your playing pallet so versatile and tactile! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and teaching patterns.... this has been very helpful in ways to inspire others like me to pursue music as a way of life!! Your Golden and easy going......
Love this video Tom ! It's back to basic but important to know and to practice these styles ! I play triads a lot in fingerstyle over 6 strings ... Love to play the Travis patterns as well... Just ' discovered' the John Denver style. Switching between nylon and steel as much as possible ! Thanks for this fine video !
He's not with us anymore, but Howard Morgan was amazing.
Terrific video!!! Just wondering if you have any thought to fretting finger care? I find my finger tips get quite hardened the more hours I put into playing and when I'm doing slides I prefer to hear the note more than my dry fingertip scratching it way as it slides along the strings.
I play fingerstyle on steel string acoustic, with nails. I have tried many approaches to nail shaping, but I always end up with a scratchy sound on the wound strings. Is that normal? Do you experience that as well and is there a solution? Great video btw, practicing the Giuliani arpreggios with different articulations is something I will introduce to my practice
You are using the "HEEL" of your hand when anchoring on the bridge, NOT the palm, which is the huge area between your fingers and wrist.
Shoot, you're right. Should I redo the video?
Where is your open tuning dadgad lesson
