Hillarious watch. No mini would beat any of our Mustangs. Or my Dodge Scat pack. Mini coopers a joke. To be fair, I would like them to match 70s cars. Like a Lancia Stratos. DOA. I would race a mini with an older Delta. Smoked.

OMG, This is exactly how I remembered Mini vs Mustang back in the 60's. A high school friend and I would drive to the track in Thompson Connecticut from north of Boston to watch the sports car races: bugeyes, Alfas, Jags, unlimiteds, etc., and the sedans... We would sit on a hill overlooking the hairpin at the end of the back straight that lead uphill to the start/finish. Perhaps halfway down the back straight the mustang(s) would pull out from a pack of Mini's only to be swallowed up by them at the hairpin, then all of them would charge uphill and disappear only to do it again on the next lap. Great stuff.

Look up Australian Historic Touring Car ( or Touring Car masters) races. They are a category that support the v8 supercars at race meetings.
They are cars built between 1960? And 1980? I take my kids to watch them race a few times each year. They are what I grew up watching and are still awesome to watch now.👍

Saw the same thing at Sebring in the '60s. Lap after lap, same 2 cars, one Mustang, one Mini going into the hairpin. The Mini would be way back and be way out front after the hairpin... 5.27 miles later, deja vu. It was an awesome spectacle!

Fun race! A really good example of how horsepower doesn't mean everything. The Minis obviously went throught the corners with much more ability. Okay, a Mustand won it, but still..
I used to like Corvairs, and I found out that the late model Corvair- after having a new suspension designed for it, and a very sweet one at that- would routinely beat 'Vettes and Mustangs in races- if those races were about cornering. Laguna Seca, that kind of thing.

That is the normal setting for the Mustang, it transfers traction to the outside wheel in hard turns, these cars have more oversteer than understeer. These guys are not as good as Dan Gurney and guys who raced these cars back in the day. A 60's Mustang in those days could pull 1g turns with the primitive tires of the era. I used to run a 66 Mustang GT, and then a '70 AAR Plymouth 'Cuda, and these cars could corner. The Plymouth was an amazing car, much faster than the Mustang, and tighter handling even with the wacky torsion bar front suspension. I can't imagine trying to drive one of these cars with right hand drive, shifting with the left hand is not something I could pick up easily, though my current car is a RHD BMW 550i.

There are aftermarket companies that will boost the BMW Mini to about 300+hp, there's only so much power that can be transmitted to through the front wheel before something breaks.
Still will not beat a Mustang in a straight but it will keep it from running away enough that it can be passed in the corners.

As the driver of small cars that handle well i always find it frustrating to get stuck behind a Stang or Falcon etc because they hold me up around the back of the track but pull away down the straight only for me to catch them under brakes again at turn 1. Its very hard to get past an ill handling moving chicane without making a darering move but to overtake down the straight in a fast car is easy. The roads i like to drive are windy so ill take a nice handling car over muscle any day. If you think Mustangs handle well then i urge you to drive a Caterham which is basically what i have been driving to see what good handling really is.

If the Mustangs were allowed to compete in Trans-Am trim, like the GT350R or the Boss 302, the Mini would have no chance at all, considering that back then in the states, these "American boats" were mixing it up with Datsun 510s, Minis and Porsche 911s, and were blowing them away in the over/under 2.0 liter classes.

Sort of. Although Minis also won at Bathurst in '66 (I think), and it's generally a track optimized for V8s...steep hills and long straights for the most part. The only parts that would really be considered ideal for a Mini was The Cutting and The Esses/Dipper. But they won - in style. :-)
But you're right - the Mustang is a "point and squirt" style of car - the Mini is a "get it up to speed, then avoid slowing - _ever_ - even for corners - if you can possibly avoid it. Makes it a much more fun car to drive in the real world also, where there aren't as many perfectly straight roads to play on.

The 289 V8's you see here are between 1300-1370kg then add the weight of the safety equipment (roll cage, fire bottles etc) and you're looking at around 1360-1420kg. In HSCC historic racing here in the UK for example, the MINIMUM weight allowed for a 1964-65 Mustang is 1455kg (weight including driver) so even if the driver is 100kg the car won't weigh any less than 1355kg.
