Get ready for one of our weirdest drag races yet!
Mat’s rolled up to the start line in a Ford Mustang. It’s been lent to him by Clive Sutton, and its 5-litre naturally-aspirated V8 has been tuned to increase the power from 450hp to 490hp. It also produces 530Nm of torque and tips the scales at 1,730kg. As you would expect, it’s also rear-wheel-drive only.
Alongside him is another rear-wheel-drive car, but this is no ordinary car! It’s a classic Mini which has had its regular engine swapped with one from a Suzuki Hayabusa motorbike! As a result, this little Mini can produce 180hp & 150Nm! It’s super light as well, weighing in at just 500kg!
So what do you think will happen here - will the Mustang power to victory? Or will the super light Mini snatch it? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

The power to weight ratio of the mini is impressive but it has the aerodynamics of a brick moving sideways
Also power to weight doesn't = top speed. Good for acceleration though. Top speed requires horsepower.
Power to weight only matters on the lower speed acceleration. Top speed power and aerodynamics are the key.

It's a race spec mini, not ideal for everyday use.
There are more powerful minis that are more road friendly and still a haven the engine up front 😉

That Mini is 👌 - the colour and Minilite alloys seal that deal! Obviously loud as the apocalypse inside, though, otherwise you'd have used radios to start the rolling races. Well done!

Super fun! I remember being a kid and the 'Busa being pretty much unparalleled. That was also the 1st "internet swap" that really blew my mind (Hayabusa-swapped SmartCars) Nowadays dozens of channels have done that build, but back then it was one of a kind. Still love the concept tho, plus those glorious noises!

Im telling you all these Hayabusa powered vehicles always surprise us because they are always in lightweight vehicles.
A Hayabusa doesn't produce enough torque to normally power a heavier vehicle. You'd have to have really short gearing to compensate for the lack of torque. There is a better option though. There are companies that make Hayabusa V8s, and you can get those super- or turbocharged.

The little mini might have won if it had raced a stock car. Don’t underestimate the difference of 40 extra HP in a tight race!
It's only got 30 extra HP actually. Stock Mustang GT's have 460 HP not 450 Mr. Host, got the numbers wrong 🤣🤣🤣.

12.9 from a nodded stang gt? The stock performance pack can clock a high 11.
180hp may not sound like a lot, but at that low weight that's like having 630hp in that mustang for power to weight.
But it looses in top end of course cause top speed is factor of horsepower and aerodynamics, and a Mini isn't exactly aerodynamic.
Just goes to show you how insane the power to weight ratio is for motorcycles. There is a reason why they still use NA engines for the most part.
@@anomuumit And a turbo takes up space, which there's a severe lack of in bikes and ads weight, which makes the bike tougher to handle.
And because they're light and never have to worry about towing or carrying a lot, torque isn't important, so high reving NA is more logical than turbo.
Plus the boost of a turbo kicking in can be downright deadly on a bike, throwing you into an unexpected wheelie or drift that can throw you off the bike if you're not very experienced, so NA is safer for mass market too.
But yeah when they're boosted like the Ninja H2R or some crazy aftermarket stuff, they become completely nuts that no car could ever dream of keeping up with.
I think the Mini's gearing also plays a factor here.
@@lazarushernandez5827 well yeah but when you got bad aero and low power there's not really any point in gearing it for 180mph it'll max out at like 130-140mph or so anyway so why not gear it for ultimate acceleration but low top speed?

It's not aerodynamics. The Mini's aren't that bad and being small counts as much.
It's power. The faster you go, the more goes to overcoming drag & the less that colossal weight advantage counts.
Gearing plays a massive part too, and these bike engines lack torque.
This one only had 180bhp 🤷
That mini is going to be so fun to drive, because it’s power is totally useable on the roads where it’s not about top end.

I guess there were launch issues with the Mustang GT? It should be hitting the 1/4 mile around 11.8-12 seconds at 118 mph.

heat/cooling is the biggest issue. I know someone with a Turbo'd mini Hayabusa, hoping it'll be on the channel soon.

All was well until I saw that braking distance and realized the Mini is a death trap.
Does it still have the original brakes from the 1960's??? What was that?!
The problem is the size of the disks. You can't fit anything big in that wheel.
Fitting dual calipers would help, but he saved the tires. Without ABS hard braking shreds your tires!
Also there are brakes you need a warm up lap to work well.
I wasn't quite ready for the brake test as I couldn't hear anything.lol

If the mini driver didn’t bounce it off the limiter every gear he’d stand a better chance. You can actually see the mini stalling when it hits it before the change. Awesome little car though a recipe that’s been around for a very long time in the old ZCar minis
