    In this video, I discuss the incredible, healing power of walking.
    Walking is no doubt the most fundamental human movement. This is our main mode of locomotion and transport - it's how we get from A to B.
    And yet, there is very little discussion surrounding walking across CZcams or the web at large. This is a huge error, in my opinion, given just how much we stand to benefit from focussing on our walking.
    Walking serves as a fantastic way to burn calories and get the blood flowing during the day. As an activity, it is gentle enough that nearly anyone can do it, and it serves as a perfect form of recovery. By walking, we get more blood flow to the muscles, thereby helping us to get back in the gym faster.
    Walking also has a huge number of mental health benefits, especially if you walk somewhere scenic that you haven't been before.
    But more than all this, walking can also be a perfect way to rehearse healthy movement patterns and to practice contralateral movement. Walking correctly that is. Which is a whole can-of-worms!

    We adopted a dog because we walk so regularly. Our whole family walks together. Our oldest struggled with mental health and we discovered she would open up when we walked. We started "walk and talk" sessions. Walking clearly helps in a multitude of ways. We value it so much. Thanks for covering this. Love from us in Illinois, USA.

      Walking is one of the best things for mental health. I was suicidal from age 13 until i changed from the usual Western diet to a plant exclusive diet. Meat dairy and sugars cause inflammation in the brain and the rest of the body and are the cause of depression. I've never felt so good in my life. So much energy and constantly blissfully happy.

    I’m combatting ankle stiffness, nothing feels better than walking. Slow and deliberate barefoot stepping on natural uneven terrain is an incredibly nurturing sensation.

      @@PornEqualsHappiness why not? I walk in snow regularly. Only thing you need is waterproof boots and you are set. The snow will provide extra resistance and make it harder/more efficient.

    Daily long walks with no real objective have been the most powerful and sustained method of improving my mental health that I've ever utilized. I got into it to help with the restlessness after losing a loved one, and it will be a part of my life for as long as I'm able. Thanks for putting so much effort into your videos about these movement patterns that are easy to take for granted.

      Friedrich Nietzsche did the same. He had a mental breakdown in his 40s and long walks are what got him out. He has a quote that says: Passivity breeds mental illness. Stay locomotive, friends, never stop walking :)
      I walk atleast 10 km a day with my dog and the benefits are obvious. Both me and my dog lost weight and my mind and spirit have never been clearer.

      Actually yeah,
      I do it in the name of escaping from the things that i need to do
      But in general, aimless wandering walks - i love them so very much.
      My Grandfather and i used to walk for 10kms every morning when i was 5-10 yrs old (i skipped somedays) so i guess my desire to just walk on and on stems from my childhood.
      I m 22 rn, and grandfather 84 but he still goes for a walk now and then. Evenings cuz its a bit cold there.
      Its just feels so good without any sense of accomplishment, just walking and not thinking anything really gives my brain a rest!

      Daily long walks were critical to my recovery from alcoholism. Probably look a bit mad tramping around in all weathers though lol

      Since moving and starting a new job (May 2023) I walk about 2/7 miles of my way to work each day. Helps me wake up a bit in the morning and gets me closer to the minimum 10k target I set myself each day

    For me, personally, walking has helped me improve my mental health. When I go out for a walk, without my headphones on and with the attention of being mindful and present, I connect with nature, people and other things I see around me. i also end up connecting with myself as I find that time very useful for self reflection.

    I’ve started my fitness journey with walking and I haven’t found a better essential exercise yet. It’s great for weight loss and mental clarity, it’s super easy and it gives you a head start if you want to start running as you can progress with it by walking in hills or shift from running to walking during your workout. Now walking is the first thing I do in the morning (30 min.) and in the afternoon (1-2 hours). And it’s way more fun if you walk in nature.

      @@siegfriedudo it once and see how it goes. If it’s constant and not stop and go, you are looking at like 15k steps from the walls alone. That would be brutal if that is your starting point

      @@Ashley-hp2vn good point, when its raining outside I usually simply dont go for a walk that day, but norwegians have a saing-there is nothing like bad weather, only bad clothing, or you can do some indoor sports and ativities on those days, and when the days are short in winter I get the walk done as soon as possible before the sun sets, so there is always a way to get the daily activity. But sure, its so much more enjoyable and fun when its sunny outside and you have some interesting place for the walk, thats why i go for the walks into different areas almost each time

    My grandmother walked a mile every day up to her death at 95. It’s definitely something I do every day. Good stuff.

      My great grandfather rode a bicycle several miles a day to check the mail up till the day he died. He died from cancer in his 80s I think.

    Walking was the only reason why the lockdowns never got to me. In the beginning of the pandemic, it was the one thing that helped me clear my mind.

    So glad to hear someone talk about this, too many people see walking as a way to get from point A to point B, people think i'm mad for choosing to walk even in the rain, but to me I find it meditative putting 1 foot mindlessly in front of the other and just natural. My mind wanders and thinks about things I wouldn't think about elsewhere, or even finds solutions to questions I didn't have answers to or couldn't remember. I walk 30 minutes to the gym and 30 minutes back, that's 1 hour of relaxation and fresh air with an active mind but to most people i'm just wasting time when I could be making the journey quicker.

    I ended up buying a high-end treadmill to continue walking here in Minnesota during the frozen months (half the year). I started walking 10K steps every day last summer and finally had the success in weight loss I've been chasing for years. My mind was also clearer and I noticed I had more mental acuity than ever before. The line of advice that helped me start walking and want to stick with it was something along the lines of "Your 1 hour of training will not outdo 8 hours of sitting." My job necessitates me sitting all day, but I make it a point to get at least 1 hour of walking in per day in addition to strength training. It's my time to unwind and destress from a bad day or meditate and be creative. 100% the #1 exercise I'd recommend to anybody regardless of their goals.

      I find that walking outside is better for the brain and body (leave the phone behind), even if it's windy and zero degrees. Of course a few winters in Minnesota could possibly change my mind :)

      Outside. Unless it's -40 or lower, do it outside. It's good for your eyes, your brain, your mental health and clarity.
      There is no bad weather, just bad clothing. A few mountain layers and winter hiking boots won't be more than the cost of a treadmill

    I haven't watched the video yet, but the title alone validates my love for this very unsexy exercise. I may tell people that calisthenics is my favorite form of training because it's different and interesting, but honestly, walking will always be my favorite exercise.

    The simplicity of a lot of the content from this channel is part of why it's so uniquely valuable. Just like was said in the video, walking is so fundamental for longevity and quality of life and yet it's certainly not something focused on by your average fitness influencer. I used to make fun of my parents for regularly going on walks, but I've come to appreciate it as a legitimate form of light exercise.

    I used to walk everyday during my depression. Sometimes up to 4 hours. Realy helped me feel better and reconnect. Being in nature and hearing the nature as well, realy helped me. Still walk regularly!

    These are great tips about walking and staying more active each day.
    It is annoying that CZcams adds so many ads to videos. They used to do one at the beginning now the short 13 minute video had at least five ads.

    I have a desk job and I make sure every lunch hour I spend the hour walking outside. It has been incredible to help digest lunch, help with focus in the afternoon and vital for my mental health. I recommend a brisk pace enough to carry a conversation - not out of breath.

    Wow! It’s a huge relief to hear that the heal strike is healthy. I’ve been trying to not put my heal down first because of the people that warn against it and it feels so unnatural and awkward. I really wish there were more studies on this.

      i believe its the "over-striding" issue that cause this great warning on heelstrike. Landing under your center of mass can be done both with heelstrike and flat/front foot strike. Look it up - overstriding. Heelstrike is not the devil incarnate :p

    Ever since Training step ups, „situps“ (impulse standing up from a chair), horse stance, crab walk and daily walks my knee pain has become so much better. Quadratus Lumborum and big toe stretches have also been big aspects

    I have 2 large dogs, and I take them for 3 mile walks almost every day out on a hilly dirt road. It's so helpful for destressing, and enables me to just get away from work problems or people in general.
    Although, as I live in a tropical country, some days are extremely hot or rainy so it is more difficult. I love my walks.

    I've followed Adam & his advice for a couple of yrs now. A shoulder injury caused by weights saw me turn to walking. I believed it was benefiting me and now further proof.

      Have you ever tried the up side down kettlebell carry? It helps stabilize the shoulder. It's one exercise I like to do in addition to my normal exercise program I follow.

    i had a 6,4 km run planned today, but since its sunday and i have a massive hangover, i simply walked the distance. Nice weather, lots of weird plants, butterflies, sunshine, lots of time to just play with the mind - wonderful !
    ...now i just have to deal with the "ego-lifting" - my app didnt register the walk as a workout, so now i gotta cancel it -.-

      It's also well below the threshold for most people of fat burning ability. You can run on body fat completely so you don't really get hungry either.

    Another great video, thank you both! I have always been a walker and not a runner, love going for a good "route march" just to get some distance in. So easy to get into a flow state when out for a good long walk. Thanks to your other vids I am now walking in barefoot shoes (preferred brand is Freet) and finding I have even more power in my strides now! Most comfy shoes I have ever worn, as well! Next stage is using barefoot trainers in the gym and my studio classes, then I will progress - again following your vid - to trail running in barefoot shoes, though I suspect it will be more short bursts of trail jogging between longer periods of walking, at first:) Keep up the wonderful work!

    I walk 1 mile to and from work from the parking lot and Ive been doing it for a little over a year now. It really does get your mind off things from life and helps get the blood flowing! 🤙

    EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS
    I bought both ebooks "SuperFunctional Training" (1.0 and 2.0) and I can say, as a sedentary home office worker,..
    my life changed. For so long I believed that working out 2-3 times a week is going to re-balance all the sitting.
    God I was wrong.
    First of all: Print out the PDFs and take it with you like a bible (no religious offense to anyone). Study it. Read chapters over and over again to really fully understand and internalize what it means to become (super)functional.
    For me, my whole mindset changed and now my days are constantly coupled with stretches, strength training and other exercises between meetings, lunch and evening chill out. During the day I am more awake, my body is always warm and my heart and lungs are not working on the bare minimum because I am no longer sitting for 8 hours straight. NO MORE.
    I CHANGE MY ENVIRONMENT AND THEREFORE I AM CHANGING!
    Walking past by the pull-up bar?
    I go for a pull-up.
    Waiting for colleagues joining the Teams call?
    I go for 20 squats.
    Brushing my teeth?
    I chill out in my deep squat.
    Playing with my cat?
    I play like a lizard crawling in my living room.
    On my way to press the snooze button?
    I go for some gentle stretches in my bed and start the day.
    I finally understand the concept of "If you are moving, you are improving"
    Before this text gets so long that nobody will ever read everything (btw, thanks if you made it till here) I just want to say thank you Adam aka The Bioneer. After trying many things, I finally found it - a training (well, almost life) philosophy.

    Been walking my dogs a lot more over the last 12 months and now it is a fundamental part of my life. Even a rest day from the gym still means at least 5 miles minimum. Great video as always

    Walking is Great... Thanks for all your videos. We are animals, and the more natural movements we do the better. I walk fast and intense everyday, post work - as a means of decompression, brain focusing whilst listening to audio books or podcasts or nothing.     I incorporate some backward walking when it is safe to do so, as well as when I run or do weighted carries. However, plain meditative walking outside is the best thing for countering existential angst. (I always take a little notebook, too, though I usually forget about it.)
    One of your best videos to date. The production is excellent but I most appreciate the intelligent, articulate host.

    I walk to work each day, its a great way to get the body moving and clear the mind. I also weight train regularly and started the keto eating lifestyle.

    Agree wholeheartedly. Lost weight by accident due to my job as a piano teacher. Walking to and from classrooms every day along with walking on my commute leads to me clearing 10k steps every day. It's got me into the habit of walking all the time.

    Great video and information! About 11 years ago, I was struck by a car while riding a bicycle and could not walk for weeks. Altho I had always been a walker and used a bike, I was grateful when I could walk again after the accident and continue to enjoy walking and biking. As a creative person who writes and produces events, walking is ideal for stimulating ideas and solutions--it's true!

    Have started walking first thing every morning at 5am, as per Huberman’s suggestion, after suffering pulmonary embolism last year (jab induced). It’s changed my life!

    I've been going for walks for as long as I can remember, but I only made it a part of my daily routine since the Spring of 2013. It was just some random thing I did on a whim, but ever since then I went walking for at least 30 minutes every day. One day they let us go home very early but instead of taking the public transport I chose to walk all the way from campus to my home. It was both an exhausting but also exhilarating experience, as it took me 5 hours to get home, which to this day is my record. I also started hiking to experience natures beauty, and went walking at night because of how calming it is.

    The older I get (60 yrs) the more I have tried to simplify my workouts. I use Indian Clubs and steel clubs for functional training and the rowing machine coupled with walking for cardio. Your channel has been a excellent resource for me; thanks for the superb content. Keep up the great work. Cheers.

      Hi ,im 62 and did years of weight training boby building etc, but im doing walking now and free hand exersizes, squats, pushes and other bits and pieces, im desperate to loose weight ,but im liking the low impact routines ...

    Never thought of it that way, i sort of started running before walking as you mentioned. I walk a lot but not for fitness but for clarity and to declutter my mind.

    I walk to work most days (about 5 miles). After I had spinal surgery in 2020 my physiotherapist told me to walk 5 minutes out and 5 minutes back increasing by 5 minutes each day.
    She said she'd check back in 2 weeks.
    At our next appointment she told me that doing nearly 2.5 hours walking each day was far too much so soon after my surgery.
    I was like, but that's what you told me to do.
    I walk everywhere!

    Another great video on a great channel. I started walking to lose weight about a year ago and it works. Slow but sure. In fact I get more of a mental and spiritual boost from walking. Best way to clear your thoughts.

    Completely agree. I try to walk 3-4 kms every day, and 3-4 extra during cuts. it works wonders, for mind and body. BTW, great editing.
