Many people have a negative opinion of running - thinking it's boring or dull. A lot of this, I think, comes from the approach. If you run the same route around your neighbourhood everyday, then of course it's going to start to get old!
Trail running means running somewhere off-road. Often, that means running somewhere scenic. It also, as a byproduct, usually means forgetting about times and distance. It's all about experiencing the place you're in.
Trail running is thus much more enjoyable than running on pavements and roads. And it's actually much easier to get into than you might think.
And even if you don't have anywhere scenic to run, just running off road will provide a whole host of benefits that will improve everything from stability, to mobility, to cardio, to weight loss, to balance, and more.
What do you guys think? Is trail running vastly under-rated?
NOTE! The Vivobarefoot code has now changed to "THEBIONEER15" Thanks!
Another variation of trail running that I do is trail sprinting. Where I hide in a bush and whenever someone passes by, I jump out and sprint at them. It's also known as trail chasing. Hope you guys give it a try!
One more piece of advice: increase your cadence when you get to technical terrain. Whether it's loose-downhill or roots'n'rocks, quick-stepping like a Boston Dynamics robot means you're not overly invested in any one footfall and can correct with your next step before your momentum is too far gone. Especially in minimalist shoes, you don't want to be heavily stomping on pointy rocks.
Trail running got me from hating running to doing 10kmph on rough trail. I love it! The rougher the better, rivers, cliffs, fells, it's bloody brilliant!
Being outside, especially seeing the color green in nature, has been proven to help you destress. The only time I run is in nature. Less noise, car traffic, better breathing, and rarely anyone in my way.
I ran competitively in my teens through mid twenties, and there are very few things I can think of that feel better than being in the zone on a long run through the redwoods.
Trail running was a recent addition to my training. And it is a huge increase in the complexity and exertion required.
Nice👍👍👍👍👍
Nice😄😄😄😄😄😆😆
Going out into Nature and Training is a great Way to keep it interresting. I train from Home and Got kinda bored of training because it felt too repetetive. But once i went outside it got fun again!!! I do calisthenics and kendo outside which feels like an action movie ;)
I went trail running for the first time last week. It felt amazing running through rivers jumping out of the way and over rocks. Its great guys.
After following your content for years and being influenced by your training philosophy is what led me to start taking leaps of faith with my fitness. I've done 9 Spartan races and one Spartan endurance event, multiple other runs and trail runs and even powerlifting and CrossFit comps.
I used to do bodbuilding only, but in the last couple of months i fell in love with trail running. Since then I've completely been absorbed in it. I take part in at least one race per month and Ive modified my training regime so that I do weightlifting on one day and running on the another, 7 days a week.
Love the mental workout that you get from trail running (vice road or track running)--you're constantly thinking about your next step (to avoid roots, rocks, etc.), your pace, your stride (based on grade), etc. YEP, it's the best form of running hands-down!

Yes it's totally recommended. My boyfriend and I love running down mountains. Definitely a different type of thrill and adrenaline. We also run along the beach. Everything you promote is beneficial and it's wonderful to have a guide like you to say what I can never say to others. I'm not very articulate 😂. So when I'm promoting something to someone, I just send them your vlog
I can't imagine having to drive 30 mins for a good trail, in Sheffield you can set off running from the city centre and get straight onto trails and into the peak district. If I do drive for 30 mins it's to have a run in literally the middle of the national park.
Thank you
i really love running in the hills behind my parents house, the constant up and downs provide a nice challenge and replace stuff like interval sprints i would usually sprinkle in.
Good content and encouragement. I like the note on relax, enjoy, forget pace. The workout will always be better than a jog around the block regardless!
