Not even halfway through and I can already tell this is one I’ll come back to regularly for tips and inspiration. Thanks so much Zed, and pass on our thanks to Dan-he’s an extremely talented craftsman.
I have learnt so much from your videos. Nice little tricks on ways to turn the knife or spoon knife. Thank you so much and your spoon carvers you have visited to film.
Hi Gary, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and for watching. Am really happy to hear these videos are helping you in your carving journey and I have many more video collaborations planned for this year ahead. Take care ~Peace~
Thank you kindly Patrick, I have lots to learn and improve upon when it comes to camera work as like you said, it's a tough subject to film properly ~Peace~
So nice to see this sort of long form in-depth videos instead of hyperactive 10 minute cut down attention deficit festivals. Being able to watch a master at work at length is so valuable to me, thanks so much for all these.
Indeed the short videos do have their place, but I feel it's important to include as much detail as possible in order to capture the true essence of a craftsman at work ~Peace~
Great video Zed. Really like Dan’s thoughts on templates for beginners, I do think the discipline of learning to carve to a line as a beginner is worthwhile. This gives ‘real’ knife skill to then develop from rather than the ‘let the wood speak to me’ maxim that can be an excuse for lack of control or knife skills.
Yes, it's a contentious topic when it comes to templates, especially for beginners. My thoughts are that everyone learns differently, and there is a cohort of beginners who it can really help, the caveat being that you don't rely on them moving forward and rather use them as a springboard to develop the core skills ~Peace~
I am a 69 year old woman and I had shoulder surgery 6 months ago and have been so busy catching up on things that I have not really been doing any carving. This video makes me want to jump up and carve. Thank you Dan and Zed.
Great video! Learned a lot from this lad! I like to use Walrus oil furniture butter for oiling spoons, it smells great and it's made from all plant based oils
Sincerely appreciate your kind words and for the ongoing support Joes. Like you I also consider Dan one of my favourtie makers, so it was a real honour he allowed me to document his entire process so that others may learn ~Peace~
Great youtube as always, full indepth, I appreciate you both taking the time to get this out, really informative to hear Dan's thought process as he carves.
Hi Zed. Im new to green woodwork and I just want to say how much I have appreciated your videos in helping me get started. Keep up the good work and spreading the joy of these crafts. Thank you. Thanks Dan. Fantastic. Really enjoyed this video and look forward to checking out your template.
Sincerely appreciate your kind words and to hear about your journey into green woodworking. Worth mentioning that I have all of my tutorials listed on this page on my blog for easier navigation - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials
Thanks SO much for this video guys, watching and learning from Dan's process was absolutely fascinating and I learnt so much. I'll definitely be rewatching this a number of times I'm sure, so much great info and ideas packed in I can't possibly absorb it all at once. Legends the pair of ya, big up your good selves!
Sincerely appreciate the kind words and for watching John, indeed Dan was incredibly generous with his knowledge whilst filming this video that i'm eternally grateful to him. Happy carving my friend ~Peace~
This is a fantastic video filled with some great tips and tricks. I love hearing that a talented carver like Dan still has things that he is unsure of with his carving, despite all of his years of experience. As a beginner, it makes me realize that I am not alone...lol. Really nice work with the camerawork as well. Thanks for presenting this guys!
This is exactly what I needed, my friend. You have such a wonderful spirit within you, and we all can see it through your creativity here. This is what I needed after a long and stressful day at work. Finding peace and like-minded people is what makes me want to keep moving, working, and improving. Thank you and wishing you the best ;)
As usual you have published another awesome video. I think the idea of learning to use both hands is something as a beginner I was thinking just the other day could be very very very useful. And I think that for beginners should be even easier since we tend to suck even with the dominant hand. Immediately ordered an eating spoon because out of dozens of spoon carvers I have seen, he seems to feel and design his spoons exactly how I like them. Can’t wait to try the lollipop feel he was talking about.
Great point reg using both hands, I was aware to a degree that Dan used both hands when carving, but it was only when we sat down to film that I realised he was so profficient at it! I sincerely appreciate your kind words Francesco and for supporting Dans work by purchasing one of his spoons, he is genuinely one of my favourite makers so you have made a great choice! ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors he’s definitely my favorite spoon maker for sure, plus he seems like a great person all around! If I lived in the uk I’d love to meet him one day
Zed wow much oblidged for sharing keep doing what you are you deserve more subs i dabble in carving forks and spoons and recantly got into shillagleah stick carving 🍀👍🦊🐾
Thanks to the pair of you! A really terrific video (as always with Zed's stuff - in a tinny weeny way I hate him for them - because I know that once started I'll be stuck in front of the computer, and return - frequently! with no breaks for a couple of hours it like drifiting off to a different world!) Giving me lot's of idea's mind you will I take them up? Looking at all of them and following them on might take me several years - at 75 I'm not sure how long I have left . . . . . . . but by heck I'll give 'er a go! Isn't it nice to see a video given by somebody who actually knows what they are doing and is doing it to help - unlike the usual ones that seem to be saying "look at me ain't I clever!"
Hi Mike, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and am chuffed to hear you enjoyed the video. Dan is a real gem of a guy, lots of talent and humble about it too. Stay blessed my man ~Peace~

Fantastic to see a spoon carver talk about actually using the spoon and even putting it in his mouth to check the ergonomics.
Indeed the ergonomics and the usability of the spoon is paramount ~Peace~
Thank you Dan and Zed. I am an absolute beginner and have learnt so much. I am sure I will rewatch tis one many times!
You are very kind Ronnie and hopefully the many videos I have on my channel help you on your journey. Stay blesed my man ~Peace~
Loads of great carving tips, thanks. Really nice camera work too. Always zooming in or out to catch the action without being annoying.

Out of all of Zed's vid's on spoon carving, imo, this one has the most tips and tricks for the actual carving aspect. Dan is an excellent instructor.
Sincerely appreciate your kind words and it was an honour to be able to document Dan's process so that it may help others ~Peace~

Very educational! The axe technique freaks me out a bit but maybe that is only because I cut myself with a chisle not so long ago. Big thumb up!

I have two questions how you get Wood for carving? Is legal to harvest tree?
Hi Tomas, in the UK you cannot harvest a tree you do not own. The wood used is primarily sourced from tree surgeons and / or those who work in woodland management ~Peace~
