Nobody knows exactly what is going on with these lyrics, not even the band members, because every time they're asked about the meaning of this song, they seem to give a different answer, or try to avoid the question. However, I think one of the biggest clues to the meaning of the lyrics comes from an early demo of this song from 1997 (official version was released in 2001), where the lyrics were dramatically different, and went something like this:
_When I was poor and lonely_
_They give me to the floor_
    _You're the only_
    _I was tired of resting_
    _But I'm not even afraid_
    _'Cause you're the only_
    _God is in me_
    _and I'm in virtual reality_
    _I'm tired of living_
    _They come anywhere here_
    _Anywhere in my head_
    _'Cause I'm tired of thinking_
_I never meant to love these machines_
_But they obey my commands adeptly_
    _I will never ever die_
_In their circuits I can survive_
    _Can you hear me?_
    _Cause I am leaving_
    _Electric love screens_
_Have tempted me to jack it in_
    _Living lively_
    _They come anywhere here_
    _Anywhere in my head_
    _I'm tired of thinking_
_I never meant to love these machines_
_But they obey my commands adeptly_
    _I will never ever die_
_In their circuits I can survive_
    _Can you hear me_
    _Cause I am leaving_
With these lyrics, and considering the themes found in other old Muse songs, it seems very likely that the song was originally meant to be about virtual reality, and technology in general, and how it might affect humanity in the future, so you were not far off with the Matrix vibes. I personally have the theory that the lyrics were later changed to make it sound more like a love song, so it would be more popular with the masses (and it did become a huge hit).
Also, a fun fact is that the name "Plug in Baby" was actually the name of a baby monitor they saw on a catalogue, they just thought it sounded cool and decided to use it for the song, lol.

What a coincidence. After your last video of comfortably numb, I told you about how much this song is admired by Dany from The Warning and today you react to Muse! This band is The Warning's favourite band and last year The Warning opened for them in Mexico. Matt Bellamy from Muse was so impressed by The Warning that he invited the girls to open for them in the UK. One of the sisters' proudest moments.
Matt from Muse was so impressed again he gifted Dany a yellow Manson guitar.
Check out Automatic sun by The Warning that was released on Friday just gone. It has some Muse influences. Thanks Koality. đŸ€Ÿ

My favourite Muse track, the fifth track of the album Origin of symmetry. My interpretation of it is that it’s about the reliance upon technology and the things that it can suppress in your life. Perhaps it implies a longing for a meaningful connection and the desire to escape the alienation that technological advancements can sometimes bring.
You definitely picked a great performance, couldn’t have picked a better one myself! From the same concert and album their cover of Nina Simone’s Feeling good is a great follow up, Matt puts his own spin on it and makes it spectacular!
You can probably understand why a certain other trio have idolised them for so long and were so excited to be able to tour with them!
