I grew up in the late 40s-early 50s and remember how bad all of us boys wanted a WHIZZER! It was a small WV town and a plain bicycle was a big deal. But Charlie Cartright saved up and bought himself a Whizzer to make his deliveries for the local grocery. Man how we envied him! Thanks for posting this. We could have never imagined a DOUBLE WHIZ.
My father, Evan B. Webb worked for several years at the Pontiac, Michigan Whizzer Industries factory as an experimental bike builder / mechanic. He also ran his own bicycle shop in near by Keego Harbor where he was also an authorized Whizzer Dealer. Needless to say we were deeply involved with Whizzer motor bikes! We got to see all the proto type bikes including three wheeled delivery bikes, bikes modified for ice racing as well as a Sportsman 20 inch tired bike, with a three speed, manual clutch, chain driven version of the bike, that he rode in the 2 day, 500 mile Jack Pine Enduro for full sized motorcycles of the day. He finished only the first day (250 miles) and didn't start the next day's leg of the race because of total exhaustion from carrying the little 3 1/2 hp bike thru all the mud, sand hills, and river crossings of the course! We had the same exact 3 speed transmission as the twin cylinder bike in this article! Last time I saw this Whizzer transmission was in a go kart I had as a kid! Dave
In the middle 50s, I, at age 13, bought a 20” Sportsman from (my paper route customer)the Indian dealership in Vicksburg, MS. Someone had left it for repair and never returned. After a new coil and magneto + other work, it was purring. It had chrome crash bars, kick starter, and an automatic clutch. At that time, the Sears moped was popular. With there two speed trans, the could take me until they were shifting from low to high gear -- then the old Whizzer would blow them away. I believe I paid $15 for the in need of repair Sportsman. Great memories!.
Awesome, lovely work and she sounds beautiful, like a small Triumph twin.if she were mine i'd add a small chrome headlight an tail light.but yeah ,she is a beauty.
Imagine that with 2 138cc piston displacement it equals out to 276 CC I bet it probably produces pretty close to 7 horsepower so I bet it could probably cruise at about comfortably 50 miles per hour.
Motorcycle sound in a hefty beach cruiser frame... I have to do a double take... its not a bike... its not a motorcycle... somewhere in the middle... Wish I could get a minimalist bike like that today with that hefty two cylinder bike engine and 3 speed transmission.
