    00:00 Cartier Tank Introduction
To many around the world, Cartier is a brand synonymous with fine jewelry including statement pieces, engagement rings, and even feline-inspired adornments. Cartier is also home to some iconic wristwatches.
    00:49 Cartier's Early History
Cartier can trace its root back to 1847 when watchmaker Louis-Francois Cartier purchased the small Parisian watch and jewelry store at which he had been an apprentice.
Cartier’s first men’s wristwatch was actually born five years prior, In 1904, after Brazilian aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier about the impracticality of pocket watches when flying.
    04:33 Cartier's Breakup & Reunification
    06:30 Cartier Tank Today
There are several sub-collections that all bear the tank name. At the time of filming, those available are: → Must
    → Americaine
    → Asymetrique
    → Chinoise
    → Francaise
    → Louis
    → And MC (Manufacture Cartier)
All of these sub-collections have variations in styling and function. So whether you like the unique styling of the Asymetrique or the modern lines of the Americaine, there's bound to be a Tank for everyone’s tastes.
    07:20 Tank Must
A design that’s very faithful to the original. It’s finished in a stainless steel case with a silvered dial
and features a set of blued sword-shaped hour and minute hands with no seconds hand. The crown showcases a beaded design, into which is set a synthetic cabochon-shaped spinel. It comes on a black-grained calfskin strap that has a steel buckle in the iconic Cartier design although, you can also purchase a Must with a steel bracelet, too.
    08:45 Tank Louis
You’ll see more variety within the range. The sizes are fairly similar to the Must collection, with three different sizes to choose from. One of the big differences is that practically all of the Louis collection features a hand-wound mechanical movement. All except the small and large entry models, which feature quartz movements.
    11:18 Is It Worth It?
Buying the Cartier Louis new is not worth it in our estimation. With the vintage and second-hand market being an absolute treasure trove of Cartier Tanks, we’d much rather spend some time searching around for a vintage Louis at a better price.
For the timeless styling, ability to wear it with almost anything, and overall affordability, I can happily say that the Must Tank is worth it!

Great video and highly informative. As a watch enthusiast for over 50 years, I agree, the Cartier Tank is an iconic timepiece and it is one of the rare models that can be worn almost everywhere, whether it be formal, informal, sport or simply daily all around wear. Fantastic choice! My favorite watch is a Piaget Protocole, which is very similar to the Cartier Tank, thin, simple, plain, gold, Roman numerals with a black leather strap. I've worn the same watch for 35 years. However, the secret to the watch's longevity is the manner an owner takes care of his/her watch. As a mechanical person, I keep my watch in a small leather pouch in my bag, when it is not on my wrist. That way I can work on cars, get rough, etc. without worrying if the watch can be damaged.
Just a suggestion for any fine watch owner who wants to take care of his timepiece so it will last a lifetime.

It is an icon that transcends the watch world; it crosses over as a general dressing style icon. It is emblematic, ingrained in the mind of many people; it is immortal. As for buying it new…well, the second-hand market only exists because people originally bought them new; someone has to make the investment. Since the case is polished, even slight scratches on a gold version show very easily. Buying retail is, therefore, definitely worth it in my view.

In modern practice hand-winding is really nice. It is easy enough to change watches from day to day according to outfits, and wind whatever watch you want to wear. It will run until the next day, when you'll probably be winding a different one. But unless you're buying quartz watches, automatics will run down and need to be reset anyway, unless you wear the same watch every day.

I think the host has a point preferring the Tank Solo/Must.
As of January 2023, you can for example get a Must with an automatic movement for €4‘500 in my native Germany and you get a lot for the money spent.
I would prefer a Louis Cartier with a handwound movement, even if it means to spend €13‘100 for the large handwound Modell. Winding a watch is a great experience, the LC is very thin and easily fits under a sleeve.

Unlike other century old icons of the gentleman's world, like Burberry trench coats, everything Brooks Brothers and so many other things, quality has not suffered over the years. Contrary to modern popular sensibilities, it goes with virtually everything and is appropriate anywhere other than for rugged outdoors uses or a trip to the gym.

Hey Nathan, have you guys ever noticed that a lot of watches that have Roman numerals have the Roman 4 as “IIII” rather than “IV” is this a sign of bad attention to detail or is there a particular reason for this.

    • @ebdaniels8774
      @ebdaniels8774 Před rokem +4

While "IV" is technically the more correct figure, most watches and clocks, including historical examples, feature "IIII" instead of "IV." Many stories and explanations have popped up as to why, but I think that most likely explanation is simple aesthetics. The "IIII" needs to "balance" the "VIII" that is opposite it on the radial face, and "IIII" has a more pleasing, comparable bulk than "IV" does.
So, if anything, one could argue that is shows good attention to detail (if not to proper Roman numerology!)

The Cartier Tank is a classic. That being said you don't wear a watch with black tie or white tie or at an event.

My concern with the tank is that its a quartz movement. For 3000k, it seems they could have included a mechanical movement...even a basic one.

If you like watches as jewelry, there are few better than Cartier. If you like watches as watches (but still want that Tank look), I agree with the commenter below - go get a JLC Reverso.

Except that for a gentleman looking for a true and elegant dress watch, the Reverso cannot be really an option. Like the Cartier Santos, the Reverso is a chic and fancy watch but nevertheless it is a sport watch.

I have a perhaps controversial watch opinion. Watches should have two functions: to look good and accurately tell time. You can generally get that in the hundred dollar price range. Anything more is fluff. Similar to a Tom Ford suit, you're paying for all these expensive extra little details that really serve no obvious purpose and overpaying for said expensive details at that. However, if that's what makes you happy, then go for it. It's better to use excess money than hoard it.

Maybe use the word ‘iconic’ less often. It is overused everywhere and is losing its meaning

Is anything luxury worth it? If you are going to monetarily justify a luxury purchase, is it based on resale value? The Tank is such a classic, and for dress watch I’d be hard pressed to find something so stylish and iconic.

    • @anonanon7497
      @anonanon7497 Před rokem

I don't think luxury items need justifying, as such. People buy these items because they have the desire of owning something luxury and not because of any utilitarian reason.

IMHO the TANK looks like a dress watch for formal occasions only. Has it's elegance...and possibly slightly "feminine" looking...I suppose (for me)...the more rectangular the more feminine..the more square....masculine...
Has Cartier made any dive watches?? "Cartier" makes one think of high-end jewllery...maybe that's why their design/look is more "formal" and not sporty.
