For anyone wanting to know if this works - two of us built a small patio 2 years ago in the garden using this method, we did it in an afternoon (no experience in paving whatsoever) in the U.K. and two years later it’s perfectly fine! We’re so pleased with it and the rustic look we are building another one this year

Great video. I used this method about 22 years ago. I read about this method in a masonry book, pre-CZcams. The brick walkway held up well for 10-15 years, then it developed cracks and weeds started growing through the cracks. I am now researching methods to repoint the brick walkway. Here is what I have found and what I have decided to do. Seems like the most popular method, outside of just using sand, is to use polymeric sand. However several professional landscapers have CZcams videos warning that the polymeric sand only last 3-5 years and will need to be redone, that is not acceptable to me. Several of the landscapers have gone to epoxy resin based grouts, such as Easy Joint or Romex Rompox Easy. There are lots of positive reviews for these epoxy resin products, very easy to apply and sets up hard. The problem is cost, to re-grout my small 115 sf brick walkway will cost over 1200 USD, just in product. Additionally the epoxy resin products can be difficult to obtain. The 3rd way to repoint is to mix cement and sand and manually put the wet mixture into the joint. While inexpensive, this is a lot more effort than I was hoping for, plus it requires more skill than other methods. Then I ran across this video, only I have found which demonstrates the method I used 22 years ago. I think one of the important steps is to keep applying the water until it is no longer absorbed by the dry cement. I don't recall doing that 22 years ago. While cleaning out the old joints I found some of the cement did not get wet to form a hard concrete. Maybe if I can get all the dry cement wet it will last longer than 10-15 years. The one thing I did differently from this video is I poured 6 inch concrete slab under the bricks, as a result the bricks have been very stable. I would think this important if you plan to drive a vehicle on the pavers. Thanks for the video, it was a good solution for me 22 years ago and after watching this video, think I will use the method again.
