We are poor at set pieces because Ange sacked our set piece coach! Because apparently according to Ange we don’t need one and Ryan Mason and Jedinak can do it. Do me a favour. Meanwhile Arsenal have hired a top notch set piece coach this season and the results are self-evident
Yep I was totally onboard with Ange, but the more I see and hear - nope sorry not a Prem league manager. I want to ask the player that in the 2 weeks prep for the game did they go through defending corners ? if not he needs to walk !
@@TooDarnSoulful Hard to go through defending or scoring from set-pieces when you don't think they are important enough to have a dedicated coach. Don't know about you, but I would have coaches for all facets?

@@leesmusic1You're straight up wrong... That set piece coach wasn't a defensive set piece coach, so keeping him in wouldn't have made a difference.
Mile Jedinak is the defensive coach who organises defensive set pieces. We went half the season without conceding a single goal from a corner with him in that role.
This has only been an issue for about 1/3 of the games played so far under Ange. Realistically, after not conceding from set pieces for months, Ange isn't going to sack or undermine Jedinak mid season. He's going to assess if Jedinak has got it in him to improve the team's form at defending set pieces and then assess his coaching department at the end of the season to improve the team.
Everyone is obviously aware of the problem, but not giving your staff a chance to solve a problem could destroy the atmosphere behind the scenes.
Find some bottle. This manager has shown plenty to be excited about in the first season.
@@jacklane3679 I'm not straight up wrong, he has categorically come out and said he doesn't need a set piece coach, and that Mason and Jedinak can do it, and the results of that are set-evident. Yes we need a set piece coach but also I just think we lack the physically strong and tall players to defend them anyway. I thought we played well but we just conceded 3 and that’s always hard to come back from.

I's the tactics on corners. No one on the posts, no one protecting Vicario from what basically amounts to obstruction. No man marking.
There is no excuse for not being set up properly to defend set pieces, refusing to do so and ignoring the problem is just plain stupid and negligent. If Ange carries on with his stubborn attitude it will cost us more games and eventually his job.

Worse yet is that this is TV footage used to judge the offside is from distance, at an angle. Furthermore, with it being marginally offside, the tech determining that isn't of the necessary quality. It is TV footage from distance. Now you are dealing with shadows and pixels. When it gets to that, you should go with the onfield decision. What was provided, was not enough to overturn it, but it was because they were determined to find a fault. This is where the PGMOL continues to fail us all. They do not want to appear as failing.
Ange has already said unfortunately that he won't bring in a set piece coach, apparently it's not his style, He's stubborn sticking to the zonal marking outdated system. Let's hope this stubborness won't be his downfall and he will learn and adapt

1. Sonny is way off form, not captain material and his body language during the game is well off
2. We have two weeks between games and still there is NO improvement in defending corners, what are we doing all week Ange ?

GV was the offensive set-piece coach. It’s the defensive set-pieces that are the real disaster so he wouldn’t have affected those anyway. But shouldn’t the head coach know this stuff himself anyway?

I agree with you mate. I wish other Spurs commentators were as sharp. Unfortunately, many of them have become Levy out at all costs activists rather than Spurs fans.
Definition of ‘wilful’: an intentional or deliberate act. Within this context Sean is contending that Ange is wilfully pursuing a deliberate strategy to ignore the importance of dealing with ‘set pieces’. I find that a ‘bridge too far’. Ange is saying, yes we were found vulnerable in this regard today, however our deficiencies as a team run deeper and our shortcomings are more complex. The fact that Ange pointed out that he wished that he had a few more players with the talent, spirit and determination of Romero infers a lot. Look out for a red hot summer of ins and outs!
Ange should not have announced that BD would be playing LB before match. Saka would be lapping up the opportunity. We have allowed free headers from corners all year and Tactically aware Arteta exploited it. So Ange needs to learn. We have a lot of relatively small players, Assume Richy was not fully fit. We need a CF leading the line. Just hope we still finish above Man U

Are we shocked? I knew this would happen. We cannot play for 90 mins and we have a relegation-level defence. Levy HAS to give us some FB cover and a serious CDM, winger, and ST. Oh and a top set-piece coach.
You were predicting 4-0 and 5-0 scorelines though Dan. We were the better team in open play, fix the set pieces and a lot of our troubles go away. I agree we need a 6, a 9, a winger and a fb cover tho
@@SpursTalkShow yeh I admit we showed good fight in the second half but unfortunately us scoring twice was the surprising part, not the loss or being humiliated in the first half which I just kinda expect now. Bar the odd occasion this group clearly have some fight when they can be arsed. Just too little too late. I can’t see us getting anything against Liverpool or City either. When all is said and done I’ve remembered this is just a bit of an experiment season. 5th is about right for us.
A massive problem for us is son is not a centre forward so instead of having someone in the box when we attack we end up making to many passing and ultimately go backwards, defensively on set pieces we are terrible

We all know Madisdon has been poor but let me tell you something that annoyed me about him. While watching the players enter their stadium yesterday first I saw Richie and he was dressed really well I thought, it looked to me that he had upgraded his wardrobe and was wearing a more grown up attire. Then another player came and I saw everyone was wearing the same thing. However Madison was dressed differently and this wasn't better! It made me think "why do you get to wear something else to everyone else?" It's little things like that that show someone's character. Madisin seems to me like the kid who knows he's good and once he comfortable he then relaxes as he knows he has little to no competition. I know as i was that kid. Watch his form improve as soon as he's dropped!
I'm fully behind Ange, we played well, but the zonal corner stuff is shooting ourselves in the foot and the buck stops at the top, he has made Ryan Mason our defensive coach, that's all I'm saying. Other than that, we should have got more shots on goal, but to contextualize it, the other lot had only conceded one away goal in 2024 until today, so the fine margins are buying that tier of player who costs a bit more because they're a star, rather than they're on a free etc. The breakaway goal after the not given pen, there was some ball watching instead of going with Saka's run immediately.

The defensive weaknesses of our game is now known throughout the PL. This is unacceptable.
Why is there no set piece coach?
We knew that there might be downturns this season but we are getting found out time and time again.
In addition, our front players are toothless. That is partly what come of never having replaced HK.
Ange sacked the set piece coach (attacking) saying he didn not think he needed one and liked it all kept with the normal coaching staff - another great Ange call !

We need to keep faith with Ange. Get the right extra players in. Sure we have some work to do but we are so much better than we were last year… keep the faith

Forget set piece zonal marking. Why do they just stand still! Surely follow the ball and get your head on it. That is the sun to get the ball, not stand there and watch. We get headers in at opposition box but can’t attack it in our own area. Just get to the ball first !

Bottom line is we’re match rusty, we’re paying the price of dropping out of cups and euro - the players must be getting sick of constant training. If not Ange, who? Woolwich were calling for Arteta sack not so long ago! We stick with it and it will pay off! Good overview Sean!

Totally agree with your extremely measured analysis, Sean. I didn’t have the benefit of watching the game live but following the commentary, I got the same feel for the game as you. I reckon you cannot fault our players from an effort perspective.

Please, please, Ange … hire specialist set piece defensive and offensive coaches! At the highest level, set pieces make all the difference.
What's annoying is we are crap at defending set plays but give so many stupid corners away.
One play sums it up.. VanDeVen scored after Porro or someone blasted a shot into the crowd. Deemed offside by error, goal disallowed but nonetheless that is EXACTLY what we don’t do enough of… just take the shot, you never know where the deflection will volley to, it’s like we wait for the perfect opportunity that never comes & end up turning it over or sending a weak floating cross strait into the defender/keeper..
Spot on with your opinion on how we approach defending corners… at this point, if we are playing zone we can’t let Vicario get blocked .. we need to send someone to meet the guy who’s going to block Vicario before he gets there. Drop him down from the penalty area or something…

It’s completely inexcusable how poor we were today at defending corners. We have had two weeks to prepare for today. We knew that Arsenal were the leading team at scoring from corners and yet we looked completely clueless at defending them. We need a set pieces coach, both for attack and defensive coming in, plus we need a goalkeeper coach to work with Vicario so that he can be more assertive. The Havertz header was definitely one that should have been stopped by Vicario as he should have come out and made the ball his.
Sean we had 8 days to prepare. Everyone knew what Arsenal were going to do. A lot of floors to pick out, but we go again. Set pieces defending we really to work on.
For the record when conte had this type of time to prepare. We’d beat most teams. Ange needs to really learn that the premiership is a different ball game. Literally.
Judge Ange in 12 months time. Understand the frustrations but just think back where this club was 12 months ago.
We need a playmaker to wants to dictate the tempo, Maddison is unable to do that.
The problem is Son and Maddison plus a few others. Son isn't a strikers backside anymore, he is an aging wing. Whenever a winger needs someone in the middle he is never there. The bloke is scared to shoot and all he does is pass it sideways or turn backwards. His speed is also gone so my advice would be to trade him as his value is quickly declining. He is also not a quality captain imo. If people don't like to hear the truth, too bad.
Why aren't our players shooting the ball first instinct? Next Maddison is not good enough. He has been hopeless for some time and he does is fallover and plays for frees. Why is Ange picking him over Lo Celso? Get him out of the team and out of thr club for all i care.
Next why isn't Dragusin being played when we are suspect down back at set pieces and corners and he is our best at competing in the air? The other problem is that some players are not disciplined and dont know or care to play their role. I'm starting to think the Ange isn't the right coach for this group as they simply aren't good enough or discplined enough for the system he wants to play. Spurs need a coach that can teach them how to play as it's obvious that some players have no clue what they are doing. They need a teaching coach that can drum defensive actions and offensive actions into players. A coach that is very hands on in structure. Essentially a Mourinho or Conte. In saying that no coach would get them higher than 5th or 6th as their midfield and front half is bottom 6 stuff plus the defense doesnt know how to defend.
Romero shouldn't be constantly playing as a forward. Maybe he is doing it because our forwards are shit. I thnk the real problem is that Ange is trying to play a system that they aren't equipped to play. Ange should go to a back 3 and play porro and udogie (when fit) as wing backs. The other problem is that spurs need a decent 10, striker, wing and 6.
Is to early to say Ange out! If next season after more players and time it's the same then we can have this talk! However i am concerned of some choices!
Physicality is the issue in set pieces for me. Players like Maddison, Johnson, sarr are getting monstered. There’s no doubt we are working on set pieces on the training ground but more often than not players are getting pushed out of position and wrestling and not even getting off the ground.
We did ok in the first half. Suicide not passing the ball to vdv when he is free then passing to him when marked leads to first goal. Then kulu falls over for no reason and maddison conspires with him to choke that ball up leads to second goal. Should have both gone at HT. Week in week out we blame the high line for goals when players have choked the ball for no reason. Recycle the ball better,be f professional FFS. Every f week. Every single f week.
We have a combination of a system that doesn’t really work in current form and a bunch of players woefully out of form trying to make it work.
What has happened to our midfield though. For me that’s the big concern, the attack is pretty poor but we don’t have any real quality up there bar maybe Son although for me I’m not a huge fan of his all round game.
But the midfield we have quality there. We know Maddison is quality we know Sarr/Bentancur can be very good as well as Bissouma but literally none of them can string passes together and more importantly they’re usually so out of position which enables the transition on us to be very easy.

I agree with your summary. Vicario needs to grow up fast. Ben White was picking at his gloves. Vic needs to command his box. Set pieces are a joke.
Madders created the wrong tempo in first half. Too slow. Lost his swagger. Sitting on the touch line should be central having a go. He needs to be benched and possibly sold if he doesn’t pull his socks up. Benny D too slow and took wrong position when Saka scored.
BJ and Kulu had good games. Romero top draw apart from defending corners.

Totally agree with your take 100%!! The set piece situation is completely the reason I’m at odds with ange, it should be an easy fix but I don’t think he sees it at all problem, we will be targeted for it by every single team
I said this would be an opportunity to be a bit more defensively solid by playing Davies as a traditional LB instead of Udogie rampaging forward and yet what do we go and do? Have Davies in no-man’s land in attacking areas before slowly running back and being rinsed by Saka for their 2nd. That’s 100% on Ange.
As for Maddison - get rid. Spends most of his time on the floor or with his arms out whining instead of actually playing football and being influential on the game. I’m fed up with him.
Finally…. To concede a free header from about 4 yards out is absolutely criminal. That’s barely even schoolboy stuff. Just need to beat Chelsea and Liverpool but other than that, I want this season to hurry up and end as that will hopefully spell the end of several spurs careers.
I don't mind Spurs losing to MC if that's the 3 points MC needed to stop Arsenal. We are not going to catch Villa but there are enough to keep 5th place.

I think Ange still needs time to figure it out. Look at how Arteta is tweaking his team for each game, Arsenal never come to the lane and play a low block/counter.

It's all about how we defend set-pieces Sean. But listening to Ange in his press conference after, he seemed to think it goes much deeper than that. We still have so much to do, if we want to seriously challenge next season. The Champions League for me is now gone. Hopefully we can stay in 5th and get to the Europa League . Because realistically now, that is all we can hope for .

Here we’ve split the roles between Mile [Jedinak] and Ryan Mason in terms of attacking and defensive set-pieces and they put a lot of work into it with the analysis staff. I’m sure every club does. Some have gone down the specialised route which I understand.

I’m not that worried about set pieces, that can be fixed relatively easily with a bit of dedicated practice and training. It’ll be rectified eventually. Offensive play and patterns, defensive errors in open play are bigger problems and will take a longer time. I thought Arsenal actually got a bit lucky today.

After JM & Conte the fans were crying out for attacking football no matter what. They've got it - at a cost. Postecoglu was hyped up from the start with the bulls**t songs etc. That was due to deluded fans and not his fault. It would be very embarrassing to sack him now. Finishing in the top 6 in his first season is not terrible. The majority of managers taking on the big clubs in the PL fail. Give the guy a chance.

Unlucky Own Goal. Unlucky disallowed goal.
Wrong Kulu penalty call - so no second goal.
Bad third goal but goalie impeded. We need a set piece coach.
