The original cinematic played in-game in the final moments of the 1.0 version. At first, you don't know what happened after the warriors are teleported away. In the new version of the game, you venture into the Coils of Bahamut (the remains of the dragon), and find out what happened to Louisoix (the elf mage). That's when you are treated to the remaining part of the cinematic and learn how Bahamut was defeated. SPOILERS. Bahamut is what's known as a primal - a "god" born purely of faith and desire that devours the land's strength to sustain itself. In order to defeat it, Louisoux become a primal himself - Phoenix, a manifestation of sacrifice and rebirth. The song that plays throughout the trailer is also incredibly significant to the lore of the game, even through the current expansion.

Somehow "incredibly significant" still understates how significant it is.

    • @ayanhart
      @ayanhart Před 2 lety +47

Also worth adding: Bahamut wasn't JUST a primal.
He was one of the first brood of Dragons (the father of whom, Midgardsormr, came to the planet after fleeing the destruction of his home world - yes, dragons are aliens in this universe). Midgardsormr's 7 children then spread out across the world; Bahamut and his sister Tiamat went to a land called Meracydia and started their own brood there.
Many millennia later, the Allagan Empire grew in power and invaded the lands with the intent to conquer, as they had the Three Great Continents. The dragons defended their home and Bahamut was killed in doing so. Tiamat and their children in their grief prayed and summoned a primal in the form of the lost Bahamut, with the intent of fighting back.
Unfortunately, the primal was captured and imprisoned the red moon Dalamud in order to harvest the energy. Over the thousands of years since the Allagan Empire fell the primal's hatred towards Man has been growing ever stronger. In the modern day, the Garlean Empire (the people in the cool helmets and machines) tried to emulate Allag and harvest the moon's power, leading to the scene in the cinematic.

You will get to know who are in the cinematics, where it was, why it happened, who let it happen, when it happened, what happened after, and soon the identity of the help given. It's so crazy, they basically made the shutdown and relaunch of the game into a literal in-game calamity where one of the moons called Dalamud, slowly actually descended closer and closer everyday in the game while the music in the zones drained more and more and got replaced with this music that slowly got louder in the distance until it finally crashed when the servers went down and this played for everyone. Barebones lore explanation.
    First a bit of background
Emprie wanted to go full scorched earth tactics on Eorzea so they used an ancient piece of tech that allowed them to basically bring the moon down to earth. The Eorzeans has a plan to stop it by summoning their 12 gods (which you kinda see in the video) but the fanatics of the empire tried to stop them. Hence the battle on the trailer.
So, well, trailer happens. Moon falls and SURPRISE the moon is a satelite built by the ancient civilization to imprison Bahamut (and use him as a power source). The Eorzeans repurpose the summoning to seal Bahamut but as we see it fails. So as a last meassure Luisoix (aka the old man) uses a spell to send the combatants 5 years into the future and supposedly dies in the explosion.
    That's what we thought anyway.
What comes after this is another video you get later in the game.
So, to summon stuff you need prayer, faith and a whole lot of aether.
Luisoux's vision of crystals is showing us he sees and feels all the aether around him that is there because of the failed sealing, plus all the prayers of the eorzeans for basically well... Wanting the realm to be reborn after this crisis.
So Luisoix takes all that aether and prayers and (something not really clear in this video) he becomes the physical manifestation of Pheonix, common symbol of rebirth. And with that power he kicks Bahamut ass as we see.

      @NaohMkS Před 2 lety +1

I was about to write an explanation myself. Something really cool I like to point out about the visual storytelling is how Louisoix first tried to stop Bahamut entirely but when I became clear it wouldn't be possible, he chose to at least kill bahamut even if it meant sacrificing coerthas

Been watching you guys for a while and I'm really, REALLY excited to see you guys react to the Final Fantasy XIV Cinematics.
As Ninetails explained, The first part of this cinematic was what the players of the 1.0 era saw as they were shutting down the servers and rebuilding this game from the ground up. The second part of the cinematic (Which was after Louisoix, who most call the gandaulf of 14, had the warriors escape upon realizing Bahamut couldn't be contained.) is part of a Raid series you can unlock once beating the main game.
1.0 tanked horribly in sales, a lot of issues in terms of graphics and gameplay as well as the severe lack of communication between the devs and people were what led to the catastrophe. (Prime example being that a flower pot LITERALLY had the same amount of Polygons as an actual player model). In your off-time and if you're really wanting to learn more, I'd suggest No Clips Three part documentary on the series.

They had made many updates to the game that did actually improve things but by then the damage had been done. So when they announced that ff14 was going to be shutting down its servers on a specific date. In game the had a quest line initiated that everyone had. But Noone could do anything about. The moon (Called Dalamud) started small. But every day the moon got closer. You could even hear a whisper of that song (Called Answers btw. I love it so much) out in the background while playing.
The day of hundreds of players logged in to watch and wait for the servers to shut down. And were treated to that amazing original cutscene. And at the end announced that they would be able to come back in ff14 a realm reborn.

The treat of this cinematic is the layers and layers of appreciation you get the more you know. On it's own it's stunning, then you find out 1.0 lore, the battle for cartenaue lore, the leaders, the 12 gods, what lead to the big ball, Cid's attempts to stop it and deal with it completing, the slight nods you can pull of the WoL from the First (i know it's not canon that it's them but i won't see it any other way). It just goes on and the more you play the more you get from it.

You're on the right track. When FF14 1.0 ended, they destroyed the world with the attack by Bahamut. Louisoix defended the players in the cinematic and transported the players 5 years into the future, the new version of the game, 5 years after the attack with the world still in a state of recovery. To accommodate the return of all characters to level 1, the lore of the game says that after the Calamity of Bahamut, everyone in the world lost their memories of the battle and the heroes who fought it. They know the fight happened, and that heroes saved the world, but all memories of specifics are gone. The lore later reveals how and why this happened, but you'll have to play the game if you want more info =).

As of watching this now its 5.3k views - I fully expect it to rocket up given this was in my recommended lol. I will say though - playing this game is genuinely a once in a life time experience. The story though... yes, its an MMO, it's like a book; the story has its highs and lows, gripping moments and emotional ones that have you bawling your eyes out.

The order to watch them would be:
    - 2010: FINAL FANTASY XIV (Version 1.0) Trailer (which was re-released recently just before the release of Endwalker, which is 6.0)
    - 2013: FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn - A New Beginning (Trailer for 2.0, most of it is what you just watched, but with a different ending)
    - 2013: FINAL FANTASY XIV: Flames of Truth (The one you just watched, showing what happened to Louisoix after the teleport)
    - 2015: FINAL FANTASY XIV: Heavensward Trailer (cinematic trailer for 3.0)
    - 2017: FINAL FANTASY XIV: Stormblood Trailer (cinematic trailer for 4.0)
    - 2019: FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadwobringers Trailer (cinematic trailer for 5.0)
    - 2021: FINAL FANTASY XIV: Endwalker Trailer (cinematic trailer for 6.0)
However! It might not be a good idea to watch the Heavensward trailer, because it shows events at the end of the 2.55 patch (the last story moment before Heavensward), including a character death. And even though it's one of the fan's favorite trailers, it might be a good idea to skip that because of that if you plan to play the game or are playing the beginning right now. And the trailer also hits very differently if you were just in these moments and are now entering Heavensward.
The stormblood trailer is completely fine to watch because it shows almost no story-elements and is generally considered one of the weaker ones anyway.
The Shadowbringers trailer is the best of the bunch and even if it shows a lot of story-elements, it's okay to see them out of context. The trailer is meant to be watched from three perspectives: people who are new to the game, people who are right before Shadowbringers and people who finished Shadowbringers. And all of these will view and interpret the trailer entirely different. It's just a masterful piece of art.
The Endwalker trailer is not as deliberately confusing, but should be okay to watch before playing. It doesn't reveal a lot about the expansion's story and the whole PR around Endwalker was deliberately distracting from what the expansion is actually about. So it's more or less okay like the Stormblood trailer, but in a better way. xD
There is also a ton of trailers for the six patches in between each expansion (2.1, 2.2, ... 5.3, 5.4, ...) because the story is continued through these patches between expansions and my favorite one of those is the 5.3 patch trailer. But those aren't pre-rendered, but just trailers of ingame-cutscenes. So it isn't as interesting for a format like this.

lol you guys have summoned the ffxiv fandom with this one. this game's cinematics are always epic and outstanding and we LOVE watching people react to them. with or without context.
This is the trailer for the base game A Realm Reborn (called 2.0) + the conclusion for the 1.0 version of the game. We spend most of 2.0 piecing together the situation of the world after the cataclysmic event shown in the first part of the trailer. The order of the full cinematic expansion trailers is Heavensward (3.0), Stormblood (4.0), Shadowbringers (5.0), and Endwalker (6.0).
In the expansion trailers, there's a formula on what they showcase. So there will often be "small" things that are presented in a significant way but without context you won't really understand why. Typically:
    - An old job gets the "spotlight" and all the promotional material will revolve around their badassery. This is indicated by whatever job the dark haired man representing the player is repping (in this trailer it was Warrior). People who main that job get to bask in glory for that expansion cycle.
    - Introduction of new jobs and sometimes new playable races.
    - NEW ZONES. We hear so much about different locations in the game and these trailers are the first time we learn where we're going and get to see what they look like.
    - The tone shift. Every trailer is deliberately constructed to guide you from the old expansion's headspace into the new by the end. It's like an emotional+narrative debrief. Then a segue into NEW VIBES HYPE.
    - The mysterious deuteragonist. The trailers always show a major figure who shares the spotlight with the Player/MC. There are A LOT of side characters in this game and these moments are a cue of who to review and focus on.
Subscribed! I'll be awaiting your trailer reactions with glee lol

I've been playing FFXIV since open beta 1.0. When the screen goes white with Louisoix, the Elezen NPC, is where the original movie ended. This is what played when the 1.0 game servers were taken down at the end of it's 2 yr run. The OG game went out with a bang. This is how they nuked the og game and brought it back as ARR: A Realm Reborn. They had less than 2 yrs to remake it all the while keeping the 1.0 game up, running and with content patches to keep us going. They didn't have to do that, but they did. I built great memories during those 2 yrs and still play FFXIV to this day. The guys with tech are the Garleans. Interesting thing is during the final hours of this version of the game, we were actually in that zone fighting them with our characters. They made it a live event, not just a movie. It was a bittersweet moment, and I still miss that version to this day. It's much better now, but as broken as 1.0 was, we were never bored. The girl with the bow is a Bard. I main that job in FFXIV. The "child" is a Lalafell, they're not children, they're just a small race.

So, up through louisoux (the old man) being engulfed is all that's in the 'trailer'. Everything after that is a cimanatic unlocked from finishing the first raid, where you learn what happened 'you' got teleported away, thus the 'truth' in the name. The trailer has a different ending. 'you' got teleported to an 'aetherial rift' where you were kept in stasis for 5 years, and then released into 'A realm reborn' (the name of the remade game, often shortened to 'FFXIV:ARR') the people praying were summoning the power of the guardian gods, known as 'The Tweleve'. Louisoux pulled together that power for a sealing spell, which was defeated.

So the lore for this is pretty cool. Not sure what they do and don't know, but the old man, Louisoix, is actually the grandfather of Alphanoid. The Allagans had sealed Bahamut away in the orb thing, the "Red Moon of Dalamud", so they could harness its power, but eventually, the Garlean Empire manages to release him because reasons. So everyone's fighting the Garleans to stop them from doing the thing, but it's not enough. This creates the events of the cutscene and kickstarts the events of the game.
Louisoix's followers, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, along with many player characters, are saved and anyone from the original FF14 got a cool tattoo/mark they can equip as a special reward for it, since the R mark on all the Scion's necks are Louisoix's brand.
From here on, you start A Realm Reborn, where your character is trying to stop the remaining Garlean forces while also uncovering the plans of the mysterious hooded men and figuring out the mystery behind how people are summoning special Summon monsters called Primals, that ties into all of this. But you don't learn everything until you beat the Bahamut Raids.
    ------
    Spoilers for that
ESSENTIALLY, the Allagans have a ton of dragons imprisoned and they're using their prayers to create Bahamut, so Bahamut is a Primal and they're basically using the dragon's faith to power their cities and stuff through Bahamut. We eventually learn that when Louisoix fought him, he reached out to I believe Hydelyn to gain the knowledge to turn himself into a Primal, so he harnessed the power of Phoenix to kill Bahamut. Afterwards, the ancient Allegan machines seeked out the remains of Bahamut, as they're programmed to do, and pulled him underground to heal him so they can continue harnessing the prayers and powers of the still captive dragons.
You go through bunch of levels and stuff and eventually you have to defeat the Primalized remains of Louisoix, which has now completely become Phoenix, and you have to basically confront a newly revived Bahamut and kill him on your own as a cover of the song, Answer, plays. And it's fucking awesome!
I think that should basically cover everything. The only thing left is really what the Calamities are about, and that's something you'll learn way more about in Shadowbringers. It's not going to make sense until then, so really don't worry too much about it, just know that evil cloak men want to cause big disasters of various kinds.

FFIV is an MMO so there are not many cinematics and they can go all out. Bahamut (the dragon) isn't necessarily a staple boss, sometimes you can fight him depending on the game, but it is a staple summon. Sometimes you fight him and you can gain him as a summon othertimes you just gain the ability, and I think one or two he might be just a boss.
I do recommend watching other FF cinematic openings. Final Fantasy has always been known for its beautiful cinematics. I do like watching the FF7 comparison videos that show the original cinematic opening from '97 and the remake version of 2020. The remake also has longer cinematic opening that is pretty gorgeous. So, the SparkNotes of what's going on. Bahamut is a primal, and so are the twelve gods that wizard-man called upon (Louisoix is his name). Primals are gods that are summoned using life energy (aether). But most summoners don't have enough energy to sustain a primal, so they typically pull energy from the land instead. Basically Louisoix absorbed so much aether calling upon the twelve that he turned himself into a primal.
The guy with the giant axe is a stand in for the main character, since you can't exactly put everyone's custom character in a pre-rendered cutscene.
The guy with the mask on the airship is named Gaius, and he's a high ranking military leader in the Garlean empire, aka magic nazis (actually they can't use magic but that's a story for another day). They called the moon (dalamud) down to wreak havoc on the land. Dalamud is a mechanical structure containing countless dragons, all of whom were imprisoned and enslaved to summon their god, Bahamut, within.
This devastation upon the land was an event known as an umbral calamity. Specifically, it was the seventh time in the planet's history that it has been hit by an umbral calamity. If you're wondering what separates an umbral calamity from just a really horrible thing, there is actually a strict definition with specific conditions and results, but that's spoilers for another expansion.
I think that about covers it.

What could be fun for you two is after (or if) you watch the shadowbringers (or even Stormblood's) cinematic, you could watch the instance where they ripped off the cinematic and compare them/explain the issues with why the one to one doesn't translate the weight of a character.

The video you watched is actually 2 different video mixed together, the first video ends after the warriors of lights are teleported by the elf mage (Louisoix) and there is the fade to white, obviously that video alone is interesting because it leaves a lot of questions up in the air, mainly because obviously the world didn't end. The event in the game is referred to as the 7th umbral calamity and you essentially find the world still recuperating from the events of the calamity, yet nobody seems to know exactly what happened that day. The answer to these questions lies for the most part in the first raid of the game "The coils of Bahamut" where you venture into the wreckage of a fragment of that artificial moon alongside Louisoix granddaughter Alisaie, I'll skip the bulk of the story to not spoil it, but that 2nd video plays after you complete final coil turn 3 and it essentially explains what happened that day, why the world wasn't destroyed and what happened to Bahamut and Louisoix.
I really like the story from the coils of Bahamut and it's a bit of a shame there is no normal mode of this raid since most players tend to skip over it, but you can often find people who will run you through it unsync in party finder.

Bahamut is usally a summon that you use, in 14 summons take an antagonistic role instead. Bahamut in other games has been called the King of beasts and Lord of dragons.

Just a random tidbit for scale, Bahamut's wingspan is like 12 Kilometers. (Roughly 7 miles.)

the one line at the end of the song "in this one moment we must live die and know" actually is relevenant for the next 10 years of this story and its so fucking strong it makes me cry. im not even kidding. every time. every single fucking time. (the sentence at 7:10)

Final fantasy is really unique in the fantasy genre: sword and magic? Sure. Dragon? Of course. Futuristic mecha? Hell fucking yeah. Space AND time travel? Let’s goooooo!!! They just keep adding more and more strange stuffs and yet the story does keep getting better after each expansion.

The most important part of this cinematic is the "Music" this music got a real meaning that you will understand in the last expansion "Endwalker" and honestly... This music was a masterpiece but when you understand lyrics it become even more than just "music", it's real art !

The thing is is that this isn't even just like the intro to the first act of the game. This is the In-Lore reason why the did a hard reset on the game in order to relaunch it as a better product.
Honestly FFXIV trailers are my favorite of all time. When you watch them for the first time you have so many questions all while being excited on how these questions will be answered. Foreshadowing, Chekov's guns, call backs, and amazing music. My personal favorite is the Shadowbringers trailer but Endwalker is a close second.

The thing on the sky is a device a previous civilization (Allagan Empire) used to imprison Bahamut, it is called "the red moon" for the common people (real name is Dalamud), when in reality this technology is using Bahamut as a power source, it drains power from the sun and is transfered utilizing the crystal tower. You must be asking, if Dalamud was draining Bahamut for ages, why was he able to do SuCh DeVaStAtIoN? Well, that's a question isn't it? You have to research what are the consequences every time a calamity happens to find out.
The Empire, which is the dudes in black you see in this, want to use the red moon for their own purposes (literally crash it on to Eorzea), which is why they brought it down and this is why The battle of Cartenau happened (the fight you see in the cutscene), they didn't know what was inside (or did they... find out!). The Alliance (the main cities of the game forces) fought there but Dalamud could not be stopped now.
In THE FINAL DAYS (remember it) of 1.0 you'd see that red moon in the distance, we thought it was something like Majora's Mask, we didn't know what it was, every time it got closer and closer. When the game shut down they did a huge event for it, the ingame music changed to that song you hear at the start, but it was super faint in the distance like an eco across the land. When the servers shut down, everyone got a cutscene, the first cutscene up to the point where the old dude smiles and dies (that's what we thought), then when 2.0 released the endgame was "coils of bahamut", a series of dungeons with boss fights which explain what happened. And that's when everything resolves regarding what actually happened after Louisoix Leveilleur (yep!!), teleports us to the future.
On 2.0+ they mention the calamity (an event that changes the world), most of the people got their memory altered and can't remember The Warriors of Light that fought before yet record still exists about them, all this, was the players from 1.0 integrated into the new lore. And this is not even the tip of the iceberg, just a little tiny thing in the FFXIV lore.
This is why people praise FFXIV, this is why 1.0 players after 10 years are still playing the game, it's a memorable thing, something never seen in the history of MMO gaming. And this is also why people that play the game encourage others to actually pay attention to the story, it's basically the best story in my opinion ever in any game thus far.
I fucking love this game so much.

Other comments sort of allude to this, but it feels like it's worth emphasizing: this cutscene is OPTIONAL.
They made something like this and are okay with the possibility that people will miss it. If you've played any other AAA vg title from the past decade, you'll understand how crazy that seems these days.
