    Sorry, but this cost information is WAY off. We installed a (non-efficient, 100k btu)natural gas heater about 10yrs ago to heat an above ground pool with 7ft deep end, 14,000 gallons. We live in central Iowa, and I keep my gas heater set at 83, and have a solar cover on the poo when not in usel, my pump/heater runs from 8am to about 11pm and it costs me about $75-$100/mo depending on how much sun and heat we get in the summer. Some months it won't even run after its up to temp because of the solar cover, it actually gets too hot, 88ish. The only mistake I made was the first summer I turned it on right after it was filled for the first time and heated it up to temp, my gas bill was about $300 that month. Now I just put the solar cover on for the first couple weeks until it gets up to around 75, then let the heater bring it up the rest of the way up. Also, heat pumps are around $2500, and natural gas heaters are around $1500 for low end 100k btu range depending on brand and options, no idea where he comes up with $5-8k

    Good video, but you didn't really give the solar option equal treatment. Yes, you are correct - solar heaters can consume a lot of area, and yes, professional installations can cost as much as some of the other options. But the OPERATING COSTS are so much lower than any of the other options. Installation costs - ONE TIME - Operating costs - EVERY MONTH. Over the lifetime of the system the operating costs can easily dwarf the one time installation costs.

    I had to apply for equal monthly pay full year around from my gas company here in Phoenix, AZ. So I am going to pay for my bad winter habits during summer as well. I'm a night person, and yesterday I enjoyed my 20k gallon pool from 2am till 6am in 86F degree water while it was 28F - below freezing temperature! My cocktail glass was covered in ice, and my pool felt like a hot tub. My Nov bill was $500, after Equal Pay, I'm gonna pay ~$150 a month 12 months a year.

    Is it possible to do gas & a heat pump? I have a pool/spa combo with a 2 year old gas heater. Does a great job heating the spa quickly. Speeds not essential to the pool, however, and it is $$$ to run in the winter (I’m in a sub-tropical area). Also, the pool water can get very warm in the summer and I’m like a means of bringing that down. I have a small waterfall, which helps but not profoundly.

    I live in coastal Mississippi. The average daytime heat in the winter is between 50 and 65 degrees which is too cold to be in a pool. I would like to keep the pool water around 75-80 degrees. What size heat pump left on all winter would do the job?

    Great Info on choosing a pool Heading method!
    This topic is a very hard topic on CZcams or online in general due to the fact that so much goes in to choosing a heater based on contexts (location, gas costs & electric costs in area, hurricane State (solar panels on roof are easily lifted off by high winds and usually take a part of roof with it), needs of home owner (does homeowner want to come home and decide to swim in Winter and expect pool or spa to be swimming temp within a couple hours? If so then we you said, gas heater all the way!).... I'm personally not a fan of solar but, I'm in business to serve customers needs first, I often tell customers looking into solar that it will extend your pool season about 1 months before and 1 month after normal pool seasons..
    Solar Blankets = A must have for any pool with a heater. There are 3 main choices of solar blankets:
    1) Standard Solar blankets - they are most effective, cost ~$150 and last 2-5 years. Cons are that are heavy and a pain to take on and off a pool (remember that after a few months they weigh probably double vs when they were new and 100% dry)
    2) Solar Sun Rings = great option for those who don't want to deal with a solar blankets. Great for people who use their pool often when heated. (Tip: if you live in a windy area, buy the weighted/anchored sun rings.... Otherwise you'll come home to 1/2 the sun rings blowing around your neighborhood.)
    3) Liquid Solar Blanket = By far the easiest and most inexpensive method. Liquid solar blankets have been around for 15+ years and in my experience work well. It's safe, so no worries there. The one down size is it's not as effective as the other methods. Liquid Solar Blanket solution is about 60% as effective as a normal solar blanket and 85% as effective as solar sun rings. The other downside is that you must add the liquid solution on a bi-weekly basis or more often if you swim often. It's easy to use, just pour directly in the pool. The liquid solution is sold many ways, I suggest a gallon - it will last a full year and that's considering you swimming a good amount in Winter, which I do).
    Thanks for the great video! Very good info, it's nice to see quality info online (which is unfortunately rare in pool industry). Keep up the good work! I'd love to hear your feedback and experience in Solar blankets and the other options I suggested above.

    Call us crazy, but we don't think spending $400-600 per month on gas just to use a pool on the weekend is "sensible." Oh, and solar can also cool a pool at night. Good video and thank you for mentioning solar as a viable alternative.

    I'm not sure if it's plain ignorance on the part of these "experts" but there's no reason to ever lump propane and natural gas heaters into the same cost category. They're miles apart in operating costs. Where I live in Dayton, OH, propane is $2 a gallon (91,502 BTU) and natural gas is $.26 a CCF (103,600 BTU). That's right, natural gas is over 8 times cheaper per BTU than propane. Simply talking about the cost of operating gas heaters as if there isn't a massive difference in operating costs between fuel types is at best irresponsible and at worst intentionally deceptive. So, which one is it, boys?

    $5000-8000 this guy is crazy you know one can buy a sungrabber kit for less then $600 if you are willing to manually divert the water with a jandy valve. I purchased a sun grabber kit and a digital controller with valve motor for about $1000. The 2" PVC was about $100 from my pool pump to my roof and back down again. Solar pool panels roll out like a long rug you all you need is some screws find your studs on your roof and use the strap clamps that come with the kit. I used some roof flashing and Henry's to seal it this way water will run over the flashing and a good area of flashing seals it in about a 3" sq per strap bolt. Everything else is easy to do. All you have to do is paint the PVC so the sun doesn't mess it up I used the same color as my roof. Some people might not want to bust up concrete or cut into it I can understand that. I run my pump from early morning until noon that's my off peak time 7pm until noon the next day enough to heat my pool. My panels face the morning sun very well.
    These guys like a lot of contractors charge way too much. Then you see the guys that come out to your house sub contractors with illegal employees can't speak a word of English. You know they are getting paid $10 an hour. This is why I just do everything my self save a lot of money. I get my own building permits too the inspectors help me with my projects.

    I have gas and a heat pump. The heat pump is cheaper to run, even in the colder part of the season. It's enough to get my spa to 101 in 5-6 hours. But it doesn't have the power of gas. Needs 3-4 days to get the whole pool from 60 to 80 degrees. Gas heater can do it in 6 hours.

    • @jricher23
      @jricher23 Před 9 lety

      Yes that is a possibility for you, Depending on the size of your pool you could even do it inexpensively. If your pool is 25,000 gallons or less you could have a 75,000 BTU heat pump installed that would be less expensive than the larger models and would cost less to install as you most likely wouldn't have to upgrade your current electrical supply for the pool equipment. Some manufactures have a 75,000 BTU that only requires a 20 amp circuit breaker to operate. They have different names for the Gas heater - Heat pump set up such as Optiflex or Hybrid but it all works essentially the same. An added benefit would be you could upgrade to a Heat - chill model that could cool your pool down in the summer months if you live in an area where the pool water gets like bath water in the summer.

    • @KingsPoolandSpa
      @KingsPoolandSpa Před 9 lety +1

      Yes you can. I have a customer who has done just that. She has a Raypak 406 Nat. Gas and a Heat pump to maintain the temp once the gas got it there. The biggest issue she has is that her filter pressure is very high all the time. Keep in mind that your pump will have to push through 2 heat exchangers not one. This will raise your pressure and stress your equipment out since it restricts water flow.

    I really want to heat my home pool. I wish I had done that when we put in the pool in our backyard a few summers ago, to begin with. But no, says the hubby. So its a cold water pool, which is great in the summer where I live in Tucson, Arizona, though the summer months make the pool water almost too warm. But in winter the pool is super cold and once in a while it snows up in the hills surrounding the city where my home is. Kind of high class problems, I know, right? Not that I'm anywhere even in the range of _"high class"_! LOL!
    I love living outside the city, though the city is starting to creep up into our area as more and more northern people move here to get out of the cold. We live not too far west from the Santa Cruz River, so when we swim at night with the pool light on we get visited by bats - yes, little squeaky black bats! While we sit in the pool, they'll dip down and snag the bugs off the water from having the light on. So cool!! We have a few acres, so our neighbors aren't _-up our asses-_ or sharing a fence with us or anything. Most of the neighbors have horses also, since the entire area is classified as horse property and we see a lot of wildlife - wild pigs (javelinas), coyotes, snakes, rabbits, a few feral dogs, etc. One thing I will tell you - in Tucson, the summer sunset colors of purple, gold, pink will blow your mind! Love watching the wildlife!

    Way off on the solar information. Especially the price.
    Each heater technology has it’s place. In this place (Southwest Florida), solar is hugely popular for a good reason. The choice requires a good analysis of how people use their pools, when, and where they are. The decision of what technology to use is complicated and a qualified LOCAL consultant is who you should seek out.

    You never mention one of the most important factors of heat pump vs. gas. The copper heat exchanger in gas heaters are garbage with 3 year warranties that companies don't cover because of pool water chemistry. Heat pump using Titanium heat exchanger and 10 year warranty that are much better against water chemistry damage. Sadly, manufacturers are forcing us to use heat pumps.

    We can presume in 2019 that the cost of solar heaters will have fallen in cost by maybe 50%. Note solar water heaters are not the same as solar PV panels. One panel heats water and the other is generating electricity and then using that to heat water. Also why worry about what it looks like if its "free". Pool covers to retain the heat would be obvious. If you can access natural gas then I presume the gas cost has also fallen. Heat pumps have also increased in efficiency, fallen in cost

    Yep, this guy is totally wrong in most of his arguments, and embellished others. Totally trying to sell his product in any way possible not considering the client’s needs and wants. Heat pumps are less efficient to no efficiency in regions of less humidity. Makes me think his previous employment was either a telemarketer or car salesmen. Of course he neglected that not only will roof top hot water solar panels be more efficient and less costs, and virtually no operating costs, and it will also cool the area directly under the panels. Oh, did he forget to mention that the heat pumps and gas heaters cost more than twice as much. So in other words if he would have used roof top solar heaters on his home he could have spent more on his fish-n and less on cool-n his house and still have enough to left over for his beer all summer every year…..!
