Everything GREAT About Kung Fu Panda!

  • Kung Fu Panda! To call this a re-upload is sort of unfair because there is barely anything left of the original except for some re-worded wins. My style has changed so much you'll probably notice those ones. But this has been the most requested redo that was blocked, so I thought it was time! Kung Fu Panda 2 is blocked in some countries still. The plan was to do both this week, but then this one became a full weeks work. Soon!

Wait, what about the ultimate foreshadowing?! Remember when mantis was performing acupuncture but couldn't find the right nerve points due to his fur? And then Tai Lung beat the five by using a nerve strike to paralyze them all. But then when Tai tried to use the strike on po, it didn't work because he wasn't hitting the right nerve points! That is BEAUTIFULLY subtle foreshadowing!

And then, when Po was explaining the scroll and said, "There is no secret ingredient, it's just you.", looked at the scroll, saw himself and smiled genuinely proved how content and proud he was to be himself and how much he had grown. This, and considering the fact that he had hoped so strongly that Kung Fu would change him into someone he COULD be proud of makes you realize that he really was destined to become the Dragon Warrior. Both Tai Lung and Po wanted to find purpous, both tried to find it in Kung Fu, both studied under the same teacher, but Tai Lung seeked it through an earthy item, Po wanted to find it in himself-that is the vital difference!

All of the main characters were animated with their actors's performances in mind, but Po was designed from Jack Black (personality + performance + person) from the beginning. Most of the time Black was just being his own goofy self. They had all the actors sitting on stools in case they (Jack Black & Jackie Chan) wanted to stand up and act it out physically, and Black would work himself into a red-faced sweat. The only other actor that I know of who is allowed to stand up while voice acting is Mark Hamill while he performs the Joker.

That's because Shifu trained them to utilise their abilities to their fullest. By teaching them how to master tiger and leopard-style Kung Fu. Obviously he didn't teach both techniques to both fighters, but it's very obvious which technique he taught which fighter. I also noticed something, Tai Lung and Tigress were pretty counter-intuitive in the fight, with Tigress occasionally getting the drop on Tai Lung until Tai Lung finally bested her, this makes a ton of sense. Tiger and leopard-style Kung Fu are very similar, near-identical, techniques. Only difference is that Tiger-Style is more head-on than Leopard-style, which is slightly held-back on strength, especially when faced against foes with similar martial-arts. So no wonder Tai Lung eventually got the best of Tigress, she could only prolong the inevitable for so long against someone with better training and experience.

I really love the scene of Oogway and Po talking under the peach tree. When you see Oogway with the other members of the Jade Palace, there is a sort of disconnect. The five and Shifu are costantly serious, worried about their training and about controlling themselves and the world around them. Oogway isn't, following with his belief that one must let go of the illusion of control, he's calm and accepting. And somehow, I feel like he and Po connect much better than he and all the others. I think it's because Po seems to have a sort of "live in the moment" attitude, which itself is close to Oogway's filosophy.
Also, side note: Am I the only one who really thinks that, if Po had just asked, his Dad would have been happy to let him go see the furious five at the start of the movie? I mean, his room is full of Kung-Fu memorabilia, his Dad has to know how passionate he is about it.
I don't know... I just love how they made Mr. Ping. It would have been so easy to make him into the asshole father stereotype who wanted his son to inherit the bussiness without caring what his son actually wanted. But instead, he's very supportive. I've heard people claim that he had no faith in his son when he put the apron on him during the evacuation, as doing that meant that he automatically asumed he had come home after failing. I saw it as "Welcome back, nothing has changed. You're still my son and there's always a place for you here!"

There’s one other detail in the movie that I’ve always thought was just so well done in hindsight:
Oogway knows the dragon scroll is blank, so another reason why he didn’t let Tai-lung have it was because he knew Tai-lung wouldn’t except that the scroll was blank. He would’ve just assumed that they’re actually hiding it from him. Throw in the fact that with the scroll in his sites he becomes very single minded in trying to grab it. In both the flashback and his fight with Po, Oogway and Po were able to mess with him quite easily because they knew what he was after and to him everything else is secondary. If he had known that the scroll was blank at any point during any fight he actually would’ve been far more deadly and a lot less predictable.

It was said Tai Lung worked to exhaustion to make Shi fu proud. His entire goal was to become the dragon warrior and obtain the power of the dragon scroll. He had no plans on improving himself to better himself or help people. Ik this isn't the best example, but look at Mike Tyson. From the age of 13 he was constantly told he would become heavy weight champ of the world. He would wake up at 4 to go for runs and train tirelessly to make Cus D'Amato proud. Cus unfortunately passed away before Mike became champ. But after Mike became undisputed champ, he didn't know what to do. He didn't have any plans after getting the belts, his marriage was eating him alive, and he ended up doing hard drugs. Tai Lung is like Mike in this example. Now look at Po. He was fascinated by the history of kung fu. He was eager to learn to the point of being beat up both physically and mentally and yet he still continued. With the same eagerness too. Oogway saw that in him. Hell, he saw Po willing to fall a hundred or so feet just to see the masters at play. That's dedication. When it came time for Po to get the Dragon Scroll, he saw it as an honor. Not a reward. Po also knew he was thoroughly out classed in hand to hand combat. As was proven and only when Tai Lung lost control was when Po had the edge. Anger is a very good weapon when used correctly. Blindly following your anger like Tai Lung get's you several feet into the ground in some cases

To me, it's because of this that Viper scolds Mantis over his poor joke, because they see that even through the goofiness and what they perceive to be his complete inadequacy, there's something to be admired about the guy with the card stacked against him still putting up such a fight.

The thing about Po - well, one of the things about Po that make him a great character is how genuine he is. Dream sequence aside, he never acts like a predestined hero or individual with... any sort of apparent competence in anything, really. At the outset he's a normal guy who gets thrust into something bigger than himself, no small feat when you're a panda. And it really does start right after the dream sequence. Right from the beginning he's a huge kung fu nerd, and his attempted triumphant yell of "I LOVE KUNG FUUUUU!" is backed up the moment he stepped into the Jade Palace, overcome its awe at the pieces of history surrounding him. But that Pool of Sacred Tears Scene, the /moment/ he realises where he is, he's shocked for maybe three seconds and then his awe is palpable. And it's really at that point where he goes from "I wish I could do that" to "I can do it" and then at the end he fully steps into "I have done it."
    Just... beautiful.

He was watching the walls from the moment he first noticed what was going on, waiting to see what Poe would do next and that's how he knew where to point to choose Poe!

And both times they refuse it, leading to their fates being sealed.

One thing I truly love is tigress’s face during the “final” bow as you see this stoic, cool, collected character be emotional and showing some vulnerability for the first time. Showing how sad she is at the fact of not only losing a teacher, but possibly a father figure.
At times I feel that when she thought Shifu would die, her actions made me think that if he did die while fighting, she would be lost, feeling like a wanderer.
Her master made her feel she has a purpose, but without a purpose there’s nothing for her as she’s a very direct person which makes her like Shifu (another reason why I think she looks up to him as a father figure in a way)

One of the major details I love in this movie are the differences between the Shifu vs. Tai Lung Fight and the Po vs. Tai Lung fight. As you said, the music turns whimsical for Po's fight while it's intense for Shifu's fight. Also, the animation is very different. For Shifu's fight, it's serious, fast paced, and stays somewhat grounded in reality. For Po's fight, it's wacky, cartoonish and everything is stretched and brought to new limits.

On the subject of Oogway's decisions, I feel like there's an interpretation that tends to be overlooked: Oogway is not in control, and he's aware of that. If a single feather was all it took to free Tai Lung, he would've escaped eventually, and name a person who has ever prevented their own natural death. He's a part of the universe, and he knows that, which is why he doesn't try to control it, but guide it in the direction that works out the best for everyone. Certain events will come to pass whether you want them to or not, and you can either fight that, or move with it. Even the dragon scroll fit this: he knew he was going to die, and he wanted someone who could not just teach as Oogway taught, but improve and go further than Oogway could in life.

Something to add is how amazingly this movie can go from funny to serious not just between scenes, but also in hindsight. Just take the scene where Po "trains" with Shifu. As you pointed out, how he takes everything with a smile, laughs, and gets back asking for more. And then, later they throw this at us from him:
"Yeah, I stayed. I stayed because every time you threw a brick at my head or said I smelled, it hurt, but it could never hurt more than it did every day of my life just being me."
That says so much and gives him laughing through all the pain such a different level of meaning. It's not just that he wants to change, to be better. His own existence, the way he lives and what he is at that point in time hurts him. Maybe calling it self-hatred is a step too far but still works to emphasize this point.
I guess many other "big fat pandas" out there can relate to it in some way. He is getting judged by his looks, by his appearance, and by what others conclude from that alone. He's not even giving a chance to fail, he is declared as having failed even before he set foot onto the training grounds.
Just the same, his line "I'm not a big fat panda. I am *the* big fat panda." is so much more than just a funny and quotable moment. It's a summary of his journey and the path both him and Shifu took. Shifu wanted him to be something he was not, Po wanted to become something he couldn't be. That's what the philosophical peach tree exchange was about. The key wasn't forcing change, it was accepting Po as he was - especially by Po himself.
So often we define people by what they are not, forgetting what they are and how amazing that can be. That is, to me, the most important lesson this movie so full of positive energy and valuable moments has to offer.

Po found the dumpling under the bowls after Shifu mixed them up, Tai-Long couldn't find the scroll under all the woks so he just sweeped them all up to find it. Beautiful way to show the difference between them.
Also, Po made Secret Ingrediant Soup for the Five (Four I guess, Tigress didn't have any) and while he stated himself he doesn't know what the secret ingredient is the others LOVE it!
